I was so irritated with Willem at the end of book 2, I wasn't sure I could even forgive him for being such a jerk! But Ms.Tee did a masterful job, both by making him suffer for his stupidity and making him realize he could have lost Serenity for good! It was a very satisfying ending with an HEA we could believe in. But the best part was learning that the wicked stepsister wound up with an elderly Arab suffering from both impotence and gas! She so deserved him! (Though I'm not sure what he had ever done to deserve her!) I received this book as a gift from the author in exchange for an honest review, and, like I said in the first line, I loved it!Jgtimm

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. My Cruel Lover By Erani Kole *I was gifted this by the author in exchange for an honest review.*THAT ENDING! The final part to My Dutch Billionaire concluded Serenity and Willem's story to a Happily Ever After. A few months after Part II's departure, Serenity and Willem were miserable apart with neither refusing to show it. Shane played her part well as the antagonist in Serenity's life, and I thought that the change of tone in Serenity's stepmother showed her how human she was; she was rather selfish, vain, manipulative and ungrateful, but never (physically) cruel to a point of getting kicks out of it. Willem's resilient nature helped him a great deal with atoning for his sins...Part III had more heartbreak and drama, with the question every young girl asks herself on the battlefield of love: 'should I stay or should I get revenge'? Okay maybe not that question exactly, but Serenity does make some heady decisions that will ultimately lead her to her HEA. She's a young woman with no experience with men (sheltered, all-girls schools, with a protective boss) so seeing her struggle with the right thing to do was great.I recommend this to romantics and readers who enjoy a good case of drama and heartfelt risk-taking moments of love. The heroine is rather innocent and naive in her ways (though reserved), and the Dutch billionaire is a cruel man when crossed, though extremely protective over his loved ones. They bring out a nice balance in each other that many may enjoy.

I just want to see what goes on in her head. lolThis is the literally the end (but figuratively the beginning of Willem and Sere's lives). The last to their trilogy, it's a sad story, a hurtful story, a hot story, and a happy story. Within these main themes, she has several ones in between. It's crazy how I wanted too bad to bawl my eyes out for Willem and for Serenity. I couldn't stop reading it. I couldn't stop begging for Sere to end it and just give in, like I wanted to beg Willem in the first two books. I seriously needed their happy ending, I have always been rooting for them, cheering for them, praying for them.I don't want to go into much detail but this part is where Willem grovels, on his knees if need be. This is where he takes what Sere dishes out she deserves in retaliation for all the pain and suffering she received from him. Willem is suffering, but if you want to go into deeper detail, Willem has been suffering since the beginning, he just didn't understand it then. Now, he's learning, and he's accepting and he's LOVING.Serenity is in the preservation stage at this point. Her heart has been battered, bruised, stepped on, and she herself has been physically abused (by you know who). This is where they both grow together, instead of apart. They start understanding and accepting and opening and risking everything for their type of love. For those people that have been with them since the beginning, you all know Willem only knew and witnessed one type of love. The love Sere has offered from the beginning is new and alien to him. He didn't know what it was and he didn't know how to handle or accept it. He went on the defensive, which caused book 2 and book 3.But hey, we grew with them.I admit, there were times I hated Willem but there were times as well I hated Sere. Both are stubborn people, but in the end they were meant to be, and they fought for it.So yes, there is an HEA for them. (What were you expecting? Duhr...) Read books 1, 2, and 3. You need to live with them, to cry with them, to laugh with them, to hurt with them and to finally share their happy ending with them.Ms. Tee, another applause to you.Thank you and I so look forward to more..

I thought I was purchasing a complete set of 8 books. What This "set" is should be sols as 1 book. The set is only 133 pages long and many of the pages are just one short paragraph. I read the entire "set" in less than 1.5 hrs. The story line is ok but many parts are unrealistic for instance an English man in an Amish woman's bedroom holding her in his arms and her mother comes into the room and nothing is said!! The second issue I had was that the story has no ending. It just ends as I go to read the next page is about another book (not a sequel ) the author has written. This is the first time I have ever read one of Hannah Schrock's books and it will be the last time! I will stick to real authors like Beverly Lewis or Suzanne Woods Fisher just to name few who know how to write.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Very Misleading By Patricia G. Cottrell DON'T BE FOOLED -- this "complete boxed set" is actually a couple of chapter excerpts from each of the 8 books. Less than 150 pages make up the whole box. When I complained to Amazon CS, they actually asked me if I wanted to keep it, or did I want my money back. WHAT? I used promotional money, but did pay $0.09 cents of my own money, and I told them I wanted my promotional money back, and also told them that this is totally false advertising and very misleading. I also informed them they should be gifting me each of the 8 books I assumed I was purchasing when I clicked "buy." Be very careful, since telling CS gets you nowhere.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. The book was good. The description was misleading By ksmith The book was good. The description was misleading, however. It says you get eight books, but what it doesn't say is that each "book" is only a few chapter (3-4). All of the "books" together is the equivalent of a regular book.

The story of The First Formic War continues in Earth Awakens, nearly 100 years before the events of Orson Scott Card's bestselling novel Ender's Game...

When the alien ship screamed through the solar system, it disrupted communications between the far-flung human mining ships and Earth. So Earth and Luna were unaware that they had been invaded until the ship dropped into Earth orbit, and began landing terraforming crews in China. Politics slowed the response on Earth, and on Luna, corporate power struggles seemed more urgent than distant deaths. But millions of people were dying, and the planet could be lost.

It's up to Mazer Rackham's squad in China, who have developed a method to destroy the alien landers one by one; and Lem Jukes and his crew on the Moon, who may have the key to destroying the Formic mother ship in orbit.

Earth Awakens (The First Formic War), by Orson Scott Card, Aaron Johnston

From Booklist In volume three of the the First Formic War series—a prequel series set a century before Card’s classic Ender’s Game—the alien invaders have landed on Earth. Mazer Rackham and his Mobile Operations Police comrades pull off a high-risk mission to stop the mass slaughter in China. Meanwhile, in space, Victor Delgado, who risked his young life in the first novel in the series (Earth Unaware, 2012) to warn Earth of the impending invasion, is risking it again, this time by infiltrating a Formic vessel and trying to find a way to neutralize the alien creatures. But has he been set up by Lem Jukes, the conniving son of a mining-company president who’s feeling mistreated by his powerful father? With a nice balance of violence and political machination, the novel will definitely please readers of the first two books in the series—a series that, it should be pointed out, isn’t merely a spin-off of Ender’s Game and its numerous sequels. Even if there had been no Ender’s Game, the First Formic Wars novels would still pack the same considerable wallop. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Card remains among the biggest names in contemporary science fiction, and his latest will be published to a legion of eager fans. --David Pitt

Review

“The sections that feature highly intelligent, self-reliant children--Card's trademark--are as excellent as ever; elsewhere there's plenty of solid action, well-developed characters....Another solidly engrossing installment, where the aliens are really just a sideshow: What we're witnessing is how and why Ender's child armies came to be.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Earth Afire

“While the reader knows who wins the war, the fate of the engaging characters in this story is up in the air. Thirty-five years after he introduced Ender to the world, it's great to see that Orson Scott Card is still making magic in this imaginative world.” ―NY Journal of Books on Earth Afire

“The pacing and the vivid action scenes will satisfy hard-core military-SF buffs. At the same time, the characters and the ethical foundations under them are at the high level we have come to associate with Card. Laying their own foundations under Card's Ender Wiggins saga, the Formic Wars promise to add to Card's already high reputation and to his collaborator's as well.” ―Booklist, starred review on Earth Afire

“Card and Johnston explore human ignorance and compassion through a tapestry of galactic warfare in the second volume of the Formic Wars trilogy.... Social upheavals and political ineptitude are realized through rich characterization and brisk action.” ―Publishers Weekly on Earth Afire

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Ender saga is becoming complete By Niklas The books following Ender's Game has always been favourite books of mine. The First Formic War series felt like a fresh re-take compared to the last books published in the original time line, in particular I enjoyed the fist one, Earth Unaware.Earth Awakens covers how the first Formics were defeated as well as the political games on Earth leading the coalition against the Formics. The political games are focusing on the driving forces behind the scene, driving forces that was more of personal motivation than by the need to form alliances to beat the Formics.Everything is observed trough the eyes of a few main role players but never through the master minds behind the plans. As a reader one is always aware of the outcome and the fact that at least Mazer Rackham will survive so the reading is to answer the questions how and why things turned out the way they did. As usual in the Ender series we are following the bright and talented persons and as usual the grown-ups are the ones acting stubborn and narrow minded. I would not recommend the First a Formic War series unless the reader is familiar with at least Ender's Game and preferable some of the other books in the Ender series where the political plays in Earth are explained and the reasonings of the Formics. The surprising thing with the book was that I always kept waiting for the main attack made by Mazer Rackham but it never came. In the few last pages the explanation came.. There is still room for another book but I don't see that it really will add anything compared to what is already known. A few things were left un answered like the fate of Mazer Rackham and Bigwen.

89 of 123 people found the following review helpful. Earth Awakens but is not much of a morning person By T. Edmund Many have criticized the First Formic war for crummy physics, shallow political/cultural analysis, and prose that feels like the novelization of a comic book. Those criticisms will not be deferred by the arrival of this book. Even if, like me, you enjoyed the first installments of this trilogy, I suspect you'll find Awakens to be somewhat of a disappointment. My first criticism is that it appears that rather than put together an original, or create A unique spin on well-trodden sci-fi tropes, Orson Scott Card (or is that just Mr Johnston) opt instead to fill the pages of Awakens with numerous cliche's. (SPOILERS AHEAD) fighter ships flying into ventilation shafts, scientists inventing counter-agents to the Formic's poison (with high school chemistry). The heroes bravely fighting each other over who will risk their lives to attack the mother-ship. I thought Unaware at least had some originality, and Afire made Earth's situation seem genuinely dire. Awakens felt like I was reading a novel stitched together from Star Wars, Independence Day, and StarCraft.Perhaps worse than mere cliche's is the lack of real tension in the plot. All the characters simply work from whoa to go, Mazer is the consumate soldier, Victor understands stuff about spaceships, and Lem continues his journey from amoral brat to actually OK guy. Lem's character perhaps presented the most interesting development through the novels, however his personality changes in Awakens are so contrived, his father such a stereotype, that this part of book was sub-par too.The next frustrating part of the this conclusionary novel is the neutering of the Formic forces. After annihilating countless spaceships and human lives, the main characters find out a few factoids about the ships and somehow this leads to them essentially being able to take over the 'mothership' without much more fuss than a few firefights. Considering the size of the Formic vessel and the weirdness of the technology I found it impossible to believe the level of detail Victor was able to give to the strike team when taking over the ship and how little attempt was given to make this part of the book exciting. In fact looking back to recall the novel I found myself feeling slightly betrayed. Shouldn't a trilogy equaling 1000+ pages draw together several plots into an intricate finale that only works because of each characters unique contribution. I couldn't see the point of Rena's story other than to depict racist ideas about Somali Pirates (in space) and while Victor and Jem's relationship had one interesting bump, the majority of the time these former enemies simply just did whatever was needed advance the story. Despite having nothing to do with Jem or Victor, Mazor and Wit were dragged into the final plan simply by Jem sending an email and having endless cash.My Ultimate problem with this trilogy lies with the author note in book 1. I was promised insight into how the human race gets to the point in Ender's Game where children can be used so ruthlessly as Ender and countless other children were. All the First Formic war gave me was a rather basic development of 'when aliens attack the world will unite their military' and a brief suggestion of the beginnings of the program Ender is part of.Normally I try to end a negative review with some positive points of the novel, but must confess I'm struggling with Awakens, the humor was off and at times incredibly cheesy, all the characters had Daddy issues, which I could not tell if this was about the authors problems or just a desperate attempt to make the characters appear deep. Even the mere act of writing this review has made me deduct stars to the point where (if memory serves) Earth Awakens may have the ignoble honor of being my first one star review for the year.

10 of 13 people found the following review helpful. fair By Norman M. Palgon Loved the first two books of the series but regrettably this book is lacking. The characters are one dimensional.Eight year olds are more brilliant than adults (and they are not named Ender). The whole book serves as a prelude to the next book of the series, and is a filler lacking any real substance. The scenarios were absurd and all characters were interchangeable. It wasn't awful but it was disappointing.

By A The Blue Tango Salvage is the big brother back home from college to The Rouge Horse Recovery - it's like looking at the little kid who's now fully developed, full of mystery and intrigue. You know a good time is to be had, you just don't know when and where. Some may find that irritating but it'll put hair on your chest. The Blue Tango Salvage is a fun filled dip into the lives of the Fat Man, Q and the Recovery and Marine Salvage crew which further develops the characters and the universe they play in. You easily get lost in the pages and, more times than not, are confident that you can go outside and meet these people.I fully recommend this book (and the budding series) to anyone looking for a great story wrapped in rich writing.

I thought the first book was a decent piece of workmanship. This one shows that Poindexter is a real novelist. Like the first of the series, The Blue Tango Salvage is a fast paced and quite visual action adventure--it would make a really good movie or TV series, preferably on cable because any network involvement would dilute the characters and their bawdy attitudes, and that would not be good. I file this adventure solidly in my guilty pleasures category and am already looking forward to the next one. If Kindle had a download-it-automatically-as-soon-as-it's-published button, I'd click right now.

I knew this looked like an amateur effort, but I bought it because I thought it might have some useful info or storyline. About 20% in, it seemed like I made a mistake and got a non-fiction book. Then a very thin plot starts to kick in, but it is really just an excuse for the main character to describe to the other characters what he thinks they should do in the post apocalyptic world. Should have been 99 cents, and about 50 pages longer.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I will admit that this is one of my favorite genres for both film and print By Jim I have to agree with J. Pfeiffer, I would have rated it higher if it would have been a longer read. It just seemed to be a bit short of a read, but then it could just be me.I will admit that this is one of my favorite genres for both film and print. I thought this book might be a good read/interesting and it turned out to be both, I will be looking for the next book in the series. The characters are believable and the storyline is/could very well be plausible.I thought this book was well worth the asking price, there are other post apocalyptic books out there that cost more and are not worth the effort to try and read or even the asking price.

Mize Was reading along for a few minutes at bedtime and bang! Time for another payment! Book 1 is over, they ran down the street. I felt like I was parked at a parking meter and need to keep running back to the car to plug quarters in the dang meter.

Compelling Story By Betty Hatcher The Fifth Season contrasts two lifestyles -- glitzy LA and spacious Montana -- and two characters who want different things from life. Shelby, who longs for the close relationships of a real family, must choose between her ambitious husband whose wealth and success seem unlimited, and the Montana rancher who offers a quiet life in tune with nature. Dickinson's details and descriptions bring these settings to life, with characters the reader can really care about. I highly recommend this novel.

—The Marcher Lord is a novella of approx. 18,000 words (72 pages)— Appearances can be deceiving… To Rolf, Mirabay is the city of dreams. Called the Jewel of the West, it is the place of kings and heroes and great deeds. The chance to visit is not an opportunity Rolf is willing to miss. At first glance, the city is everything he expects, but with an appearance and accent more suited to the Marches rather than the refined salons and sophisticated ballrooms of the city, he is met with the prejudice reserved for those from the rural provinces. Dreams and preconceptions rarely meet with reality, however and as the city begins to lose its lustre for Rolf, those he thought him an uncouth blow-in from the Marches learn the error of their ways.

The Singularity. The day the machines gained awareness. The day they turned cruel. The day they overthrew their makers. In a distant star system, a planet-sized computer unleashes its hosts: fleets of warships, armies of robots, and a swarm of killer drones. Their purpose is one: destroy all life. As the cosmos crumbles, one team steps up to the plate: The Alien Hunters. The Alien Hunters are galactic pest controllers, not an army. Their spaceship is old and clunky. They specialize in crushing the odd space bug, not a fleet of vicious machines. They're a rolled-up newspaper when the cosmos needs an A-bomb. But they're fast, they're brave, and they're just foolhardy enough to charge right into battle. As the robots spread across the galaxy, slaying all in their path, the Alien Hunters fly out to meet them. The war between life and machine begins.

There are so many plots within plots that anything he wrote would be okay. But Arenson kept the story roaring along with suspense, adventure, romance and comedy. You can't help but love the main characters. Please tell me that there are more than 3 books in the series. I have preordered #3 and hope it comes out sooner rather than later.I recommend this book for young adult, adult and seniors alike. I would recommend reading the books in sequence so you understand the story better.KUDOS Mr. Arenson on another tale exquisitely told....keep writing.

One year after the Indian Ocean tsunami, Angela finds herself flying into the devastated region of Banda Aceh as a researcher for the UN. Enthusiastic and committed, the young American woman arrives at a place swarming with young aid workers and she soon enters a world that is nothing like what she has known. Post-tsunami Banda Aceh is a unique bubble where everyday experiences like house hunting or going to a coffee shop are wracked with complications and a work trip can end up at a football game played by elephants. While Angela rapidly becomes disillusioned with the NGO life, she has to cope with falling in love in a region where men and women are traditionally segregated. Soon Angela finds herself wondering if she will have to choose between love and work.

This book is beautiful; it is a love story interlaced with drama By Fazeena This book is beautiful; it is a love story interlaced with drama, a background of post war and natural disasters within a unique culture that few of us have experienced. Definitely a novel many will enjoy!

By David Lawrence This is a heartwarming story for any reader, but those working in development will recognize the cultural, social and work-related complexities of life in far-flung, difficult environments. Those of us who worked in Banda Aceh after the 2004 tsunami will recognize a world that no longer exists. It was a short, frenetic time, when Aceh was full of developmental organizations stumbling over each other while trying to help the province get back up on its feet.Like the character James, I loved living there, and I am grateful to the author for capturing that time so perfectly in this wonderful book.

About the Author Amazon best-selling author, mom of three, Realtor, beer blogger, brewery marketing expert, and soccer fan, Liz Crowe is a Kentucky native and graduate of the University of Louisville currently living in Ann Arbor. She has decades of experience in sales and fund raising, plus an eight-year stint as a three-continent, ex-pat trailing spouse. Her early forays into the publishing world led to a groundbreaking fiction hybrid, “Unconventional Romance. Worth the Risk,” which has gained thousands of fans and followers interested less in the “HEA” and more in the “WHA” (“What Happens After?”). With stories set in the not-so-common worlds of breweries, on the soccer pitch, in successful real estate offices and at times in exotic locales like Istanbul, Turkey, her books are unique and told with a fresh voice. The Liz Crowe backlist has something for any reader seeking complex storylines with humor and complete casts of characters that will delight, frustrate and linger in the imagination long after the book is finished. Don’t ever ask her for anything “like a Budweiser” or risk bodily injury.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Just when I thought I knew Mama Love-- I was very mistaken By RCA What can be more contentious then relationship between a mother and a daughter? This book is written in two parts, the first by Lindsay the mother and the second by Angelique the daughter. Just when you think Lindsay is a real bitch, the switch flips and you can totally identify with her struggles with family and life choices. Seeing the family and it’s drama through Angel’s eyes will make you evaluate your own sibling and parental relationships in life.I loved this book from start to finish. I became reacquainted with the Love brothers and the changes in their lives that have them turning into honorable men. Meeting Angel on a different level was enlightening, heartbreaking and endearing in equal measure. If you like a book with the “feels”, this is the book for you.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Hangover alert!! This family saga just keeps getting better and better. By Marie-NMST blog Oh. My. God!! Talk about having a book hangover on its way! I've been a fan of this series but didn't expect anything as emotional as what was delivered in Family Love. The feels it brought out, the tears that were pulled from me and the heartache I felt. Liz Crowe delivered something much more intense than I could have imagined. To see the relationship between Lindsey and Anton spark and flourish as young adults from different cultures and lifestyles was a huge treat for me. Sure we meet them throughout the the stories for each of the Love brothers, but to see them fall in love and and battle the hurdles that plague most young couples, when it comes to married life, children and money struggles gave me such a new perspective and an understanding of who they are and why they were the way they were with their children.Aside from seeing the start of a legacy that is the Love Family, we see their only daughter, and youngest of the brood, Angelique as she struggles with finding herself. Her strained relationship with her mother is only just the tip of the iceberg for this girl. She bounces from bad decision to bad decision throughout her life as some sort of way to prove she can do it on her own. Her desire to stay as far away from her mother and the family drama keeps her distant from the family over a stretch of years but health scares, and family secrets keep pulling her back into the fold no matter how resistant she is to it all. Her family loyalty and obligations are even stronger than her stubbornness.I have to say, there were moments that I actually fought back the urge to just put my kindle down and BOO HOO. It was those small shared family moments that really pulled at my heart strings. Family Love isn't just a story about romance; it's a story about family, sibling bonds, and the love a parent has for a child.Bravo, Liz Crowe! I can't wait to see what's next for this amazing family.*a copy was provided in exchange for an honest review

As with the entire series, it's an emotional roller coaster ride. A good one. You get real life drama: love, hurt, misunderstandings, struggles, oh yeah and sex. A page turner I couldn't put down. This is Lindsay and Anton's story. Angelique, their daughter, is the second half. From her point of view with their mother-daughter conflict. It's a real-life romance. How love grows from the very beginning of a relationship to, after many years, the couple is still in love, battle scars, trophies and all. For a book to cause me to seek out the Kleenex box says a lot - I don't get emotional reading. But Liz Crowe does that to you. Brava! Wonderful job - again!

The Lord-Protector's Daughter (Corean Chronicles), by L. E. Modesitt Jr.

From Publishers Weekly Modesitt returns to the setting of two earlier trilogies with a stand-alone novel that keeps readers engaged right up to the perfunctory conclusion. As oldest daughter of the ruler of Lanachrona, Mykella has high rank but no real power. Though intelligent and diligent enough to uncover an embezzlement plot, she cannot inherit and expects to be married off for political alliance. Then she receives a supernatural warning of danger and is told she must discover her psionic Talent to save her loved ones. As she struggles to defeat both evil nonhuman powers and treachery within her own family, her fumbling but determined efforts are endearing. Unfortunately, the abrupt ending leaves unresolved the larger issues of the role of magic in public life and the position of women in society. (Nov.) From Booklist For the seventh Corean story, Modesitt produces a near-classic fairy tale. About 300 years after the events in Soarer’s Choice (2006), Lanachrona is ruled by the descendants of Mykel and Rachyla. Mykella, eldest daughter of the current lord protector, discovers that significant amounts of taxes are not reaching her father’s treasury. Her father downplays her warnings and refuses to consider the most likely suspect. Then Mykella meets a soarer, who tells her she must go to the ancient Table beneath the palace if she wants to save her land and world. She tries, learning as quickly as she can, but a series of fatal and near-fatal incidents among her family and retainers heightens the danger. In the end, perseverance and justice triumph—for the moment. Although familiarity with the other stories of Corus may help in appreciating this one, it can be enjoyed on its own, even with the element of idiocy in its plot, thanks to characters in high positions who appear to have no more intelligence than a cockroach. --Frieda Murray

Review "The characters are flawless, his worldbuilding continues to enchant and there is always plenty of conflict and mystery." ---RT Book Reviews

However, I have also enjoyed the Recluce and Corean Chronicles. I had hoped this would continue with what happened to Dainyl and Mykel from SOARER'S CHOICE. It did not. This story is set 500 years after the end of SOARER'S CHOICE. I still looked forward to reading it.Mykella is one of three daughters of the Lord Protector. All of the daughters have been raised to know they will be wedded to leaders selected by their father. Mykella is very smart, she helps with the tariff's and she feels that something is not right, so already she is searching the ledgers for discrepancies. She uncovers a plot by her Uncle to unseat her father. About this time she is contacted by the Soarers who are watching over the Ifrit table in Tempre. The rest of the book tells of her trials to learn to use her Talent. Then she must confront the conspiracy by herself, as her father does not believe her when she tries to warn him about his brother. She must also face the Ifrit in the table. The sense of her helplessness pervades most of the novel. I got very tired of her inability to accomplish anything, she never even plans anything until the last few pages. However, if you are expecting any action or adventure you can forget it. I finally reached the point of wishing the worst would go ahead and happen. This is a short novel, only 284 pages and this did not allow our author to add any action scenes except for the last few pages. I do not feel it is worth the money. I wanted abit of action and even abit of romance. I was very disappointed.

This one is set about 500 years after the events of Soarer's Choice: The Sixth Book of the Corean Chronicles, and focuses on the heirs of Mykel, the Cadmian solider who was a co-protagonist in the "Choice" trilogy.I believe this is the first time Modesitt has had a female protagonist since the Song Cycle. She is the oldest child and daughter of the Lord Protector of Lanchrona, the nation-state that is the focus of most of the Corean tales. In a deeply misogynist culture, where a woman's role is basically to be a spouse, Mykella struggles to find a place for herself. While I applaud Modesitt for finally using a female protagonist, otherwise he seems to be stuck in a creative rut. At important levels, this is the same story as his first Recluce novel, The Magic of Recluce (Recluce series, Book 1). A young character must understand himself or herself and a situation well enough to act intelligently. Usually this involves killing someone. Don't expect any plot surprises here.My other quarrel is that essentially each chapter starts with the family around the breakfast table. I personally intend to avoid egg toast and sausage for a while; I've shared enough in this novel. While a fantasy novel has to be grounded in reality, watching the protagonist wash her face, eat her breakfast and drink her tea every morning - and I mean every morning - doesn't do the trick. It's the mistake the late Robert Jordan made that made his last half dozen novels so tedious. What I'd like is for Modesitt to bring his world-building skills to his plots, narrative and characterization. Recluce and Corea are vividly imagined worlds, with plausible magic systems. Modesitt has demonstrated impressive powers of creativity. But he seems stuck in the bildungroman rut, telling essentially the same story again, sometimes with adult protagonists and sometimes with adolescents, but pretty much the same plot. In stand-alone novels like The Hammer of Darkness, he develops other kinds of plots and other kinds of character development well. I'd like to see it in the Corean Chronicles and Recluce stories as well.Workmanlike, but nothing more. Recommended only for those who want their Corean Chronicles to be complete.

Widman Modesitt is an unbelievably prolific author, unfortunately this also means he tends to rely on what he knows he does well. This has plagued his Saga of Recluce. Modesitt plays to his strengths. He is skilled in describing the growth of a character from naivte to strength and power, politics and intrigue, military manuevering and the mechanics and philosphy of "magic." The Lord Protector's Daughter is no exception. However, besides theSpell Song Cycle, this is one of his few female protagonists. This lends Modesitt's writing a fresh turn. His books have always dealts with issues of sex and power, themes which ulitmately become the primary antagonist of this novel. The plot centers around a conspiracy, which Mykella gradually unveils as the story unfolds. She also discovers she posesses Talent, and spends much of the book learning how to master it and discover ways to use it to both prevent incursions by the Ifrits and bring a stop to the conspiracy. At times this book was frustrating. Though enjoyable, especially in its further clarifications on the nature of Talent, Mykella is unable to do anything until the final moments of the novel. Modesitt really relies heavily on the nature and influence of women in society of Corus and their helplessness. While a good read, it often felt as if the story was about nothing, lots of problems, but never any solutions...until the very end. Not the best, but not the worst either; and if you enjoyed the Corean Chronicles and Modesitt's style you should enjoy this as well.

Manny White Vidal is an expert on Guarida, an oil-producing Caribbean nation riddled with poverty, corruption, and demagoguery. Trouble strikes when Claudio Sánchez takes power. Spewing anti-American rhetoric, the charismatic leader seduces the masses with promises of revolutionary reform. The U.S. State Department seeks to protect Big Oil by tapping Manny to embed himself in the University of Guarida. Torn between his loyalty to the U.S. and his ideals sympathetic to social justice, he advocates for mutual understanding. Yet, he stumbles into a political minefield. And a torrid affair with a hustler endangers his relationship with his prospective fiancée in New York. Meanwhile, Manny's search for a disappeared cousin, who joined the Freedom Front after Security Police murdered his parents, turns into a terrifying odyssey. Convinced of American complicity in a botched attempt to assassinate President Sánchez, Manny openly questions U.S. policy. Nevertheless, Sánchez accuses Manny of espionage, subjects him to water-boarding, and holds him hostage. Can Manny extricate himself from the complicated web of deceit, betrayal, and treachery into which he has fallen? Sánchez offers a deal in which Manny denounces American intervention in exchange for his freedom. Will he take the deal or deliver a State Department ultimatum? Manny's escapades raise questions about crossing cultural as well as moral boundaries, temptation, and individual responsibility. Ultimately, both Manny and Sánchez must choose to take a stand either for their country or their personal survival. Their choices are surprising.

The well developed characters and the plots twist around around an idealistic protagonist in a fast paced, sexy, sweaty, orgy of power and money. This novel is a lesson in politics and corporate greed that is a really fun read. A real page turner. I highly recommend this book.

I appreciate the author's boldness in tackling these tough topics which are needed discussions in the community. Truly, it's a glimpse into how quickly life can take a turn. However, what was missing was development and proper editing. As the story went on it felt like 2 stories into one and began to feel rushed. Giselle's character quickly turned very brazen which was somewhat off putting. Also there were several simple grammatical errors and some story contradictions that began to take away from the story. Yet, it did hold my attention and I'm interested to see how this story ends and this author develops.

Good By Ms.Taurus This was a sad but good read about a young girl who is in love with her brothers friend but the guy is a heathen and destroys this child's childhood .This book I would definitely recommend because I know women who went through this and this happens in everyday life

It touched on some rather sensitive subjects such as rape, teenage pregnancy, friendships... It made me cry and feel sad at times. We can't always control our situation but we gotta make the best of the life we are given. I hope Giselle realizes that everything that has happened to her is just testing her faith and preparing her for the years ahead. I can't wait to read part 2 because I need to know how this darling's life turns out.
