One macho cowboy, one nerdy astronomer... and a heartache that neither could have seen in the stars... Cowboy Morgan West was raised on his mother's stories of Glencoe and the Mackenzie family who ran it. Heartbroken after a breakup, he decides to see the place and people for himself. He intends to work for one season only, but then he meets Rebecca—a woman he craves and a woman, he believes, he doesn't deserve. When mysterious Morgan West begins to turn up wherever she is, astronomer Rebecca Mayhew is confused. She can tell anyone who asks how many miles Saturn is from the earth (roughly 746 million) and the likelihood of there being life on another planet (high), but she can't begin to explain in rigorous scientific terms why her fingers itch to caress Morgan's broad muscled back, or why the only calculation on her mind is how long it would take to kiss every square inch of him. She's confused, yet curious, and Morgan is more than happy to satisfy that curiosity. But instead of their physical relationship clarifying things, Rebecca's nice neat orderly world unravels, revealing painful pasts that have the potential to explode more than just their own worlds.

The Cowboy's Craving (The Mackenzies Book 3), by Diana Fraser

From the Back Cover Excerpt"I really wanted to see you again. I don't know, last time I saw you"--she frowned as she tried to explain what she'd felt--"I just knew I needed to see you again. And then when I didn't, I kept thinking about you. Wondering what you were doing."He raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Doing? Working. That's all, just working."She glanced at his muscles. "That's what I thought. That's what I imagined.""You imagined me working? What, like this? Without a shirt?"She bit her lip and then nodded."Um..." He stepped toward her. "Turns out you were right. And turns out I was wrong because I didn't imagine you like this." He reached out and lightly touched her arm, covered with a thick jumper, beneath which she wore a t-shirt. His finger curled around one of the chunky swirls of the Arran sweater and sunk it inside the center of the swirl. The feel of his finger against her bare arm sent crazy signals to all parts of her body, cutting off any thought. With the lightest of touches, he curled his finger around the knot of wool and pulled her to him. And she came. She was at eye level with his bare chest and stayed there, transfixed by the springy hairs, by the sawdust which dappled his shoulders and by the smell of him. God, all she wanted to do was to lick his nipple, so tight and brown."Rebecca?" His voice rumbled in his body and she felt it in her gut."Um?" She didn't raise her face to his, only her palm and placed it against his chest. Lightly at first, feeling the springy hairs tickling against the delicate skin on the inside of her wrist. She sucked in a lungful of air as she pushed her hand firmly against his chest. She felt a corresponding sharp intake of breath with him."Rebecca! What are you doing?"She raised her eyes to his, which looked down at her, dark and dangerous. "Touching you. Like I've wanted to do from the minute I got here."He pressed his hand briefly against hers before dragging it away. "You don't know what you're playing with.""I think I do."

McGovern Awesome contemporary western romance. The MacKenzies have fought hard to hang onto what they have. Morgan grew up in the Bush hearing stories from hos mother about Glencoe. He considers himself a monad and changes jobs when the urge sets in. He goes to Glencoe, gets a job but intends to move on. That is until he meets the ultra smart Rebecca and he's smitten. Rebecca is brilliant and can tell you anything about stars & constellations. Only Rebecca is unprepared to deal with personal relationships. The authors descriptions of the characters and scenery takes you there and allows the reader to understand why the character thinks and acts the way they do. I received a free copy of this book from the author solely in exchange for an honest opinion. I very much look forward to reading more of Ms Fraser's books in the future.

But just before her 21st birthday, her mother is struck by a hit and run driver, and Henrietta discovers she's not who she thought she was. This is the third in Aird's series of excellently well-written, police-procedural-types of classic British mystery with the team of Detective-Inspector Sloan (methodical, persistent, an all-around "good copper") and Detective-Constable Crosby (young, brash and a bit dim). The best about Aird's books is that she actually gives you the clues (in the best tradition) cleverly hidden in the dialog and descriptions, so that if you pay close attention, you have a good chance of figuring things out. I wish more of her books were in print. Not as depressing as Martha Grimes or Elizabeth George, but equally interesting, and her detecting team manage to be amusing while still "real" people.

It's probably Catherine Aird's best.Grace Jenkins is knocked down by a car and killed, which leaves her 20-year-old daughter Henrietta alone in the world. Bewildered Henrietta is then told that on the basis of the autopsy examination Grace Jenkins couldn't possibly be her mother- she had never had any children.Meanwhile,in one of the best scenes of the book, the police are examining the scene of the traffic "accident", and coming to the grim conclusion that it was a case of murder by motor car.The police have to solve a murder, and Henrietta has to find her true identity. The book is a comfortable read without being too soft-headed, and the dialogue is first-rate. The book is fairly short- there is no unnecessary padding. If you like English village who-dun-its you won't be disappointed!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A Classic Murder Tale! By Shirley Schwartz Ms. Aird writes a detective story in the truly classic way. Her plots are tight and there are just enough red herrings to make it interesting. This book is no exception. Poor Henrietta Jenkins loses her mother in a hit-and-run accident and then discovers that she's not Henrietta Jenkins at all, and the woman that she knew as her mother could not possibly have been. So who is she and who were her parents? The hit-and-run turns out to be murder and DI Slonae is called in to investigate. He's got a real puzzler on his hands with this one because no one is who they seem. An excellent little who-dun-it that is truly fun to read.

I was instantly drawn into this book, with its beautifully drawn characters and superb writing. On its surface, the story is a mystery: What led to the death of Lydia Lee, a sixteen-year-old honor student with (supposedly) everything to live for? In reality, the mystery goes far deeper, into the lives of each member of the family. By the end of the book, the reader is fully in sympathy with each character. The novel, which takes place in the late 70s, begins with Lydia's death. Was it murder? Was it suicide? Or was it something else? The reader spends most of the novel thinking one thing, only to be surprised at the end with the truth. The author delves into the lives of each family member: James, the father, who never felt really at home in any situation; Marilyn, the mother, whose dreams were shelved by the demands of marriage, family, and the times; Nathan, the older brother, whose brilliance is overlooked; Lydia, the golden child burdened with all the frustrated aspirations of her parents; and Hannah, the overlooked afterthought of a child, a silent but keen observer of everyone in her family. (I was torn between imagining the author as Lydia or as Hannah; I suspect she is an amalgam of both.)Many chapters in this novel focus on just one character, telling the story from his or her point of view. The reader is led to an understanding of just how profoundly even the best intentions can go terribly awry. Once again, we see people living out their own frustrated dreams through their children, who may or may not be on board. The term "helicopter parent" comes to mind, though this idea was not in vogue until the 90s. In addition, issues of race in America and women's roles are explored through the parents, James and Marilyn, who came of age in the 60s and early 70s at the height of the sexual and civil rights revolutions. Even gay identity comes into play, and remember that this novel is set in 1977, not 2014.I am compelled to praise the writing of this book. Both psychologically astute and poetic, it draws the reader into the story and evokes sympathy and awe. We see the devastating grief that overtakes each member of the family as he or she tries to see why Lydia died and what he or she may have done to prevent it. I also loved the way the author treated memory, that old deceiver, who smoothes out that which we cannot bear to recall.I do not think this book is marketed as a YA novel, but it is certainly a book that parents and teenagers may profitably read and discuss together. The issues are fresh and relevant, and I can imagine that meaningful discussions and insights may result. Highly recommended for all readers 14 and above.

It is so exquisite, so marvelously perfect, so regally quiet and elegant that surely, it must come from the hands of a old soul author. But no. This is Celeste Ng's first novel, and in it, she has painted such a deeply felt, original story. This book shall remain with me for the rest of my days.Everything I Never Told You is a story of secrets, of love, of longing, of lies, of race, of identity, and knowledge. The story begins with the death of Lydia, daughter of Marilyn and James, which is told in the first sentence and slowly revealed through the book. Her death drives the narrative, and yet, this story is bigger, grander than this central mystery. Marilyn wanted to defy society's narrow vision of her life and become a doctor, while James is trying to overcome humble beginnings and a society judging him based on his race. Together, they conventions, marry and create a family. Nathan, oldest son on his way to Harvard, Lydia, the middle sister and favorite one, and Hannah, truly growing up invisible. Together, Ng has created a complex, complicated family that rings so true on every page. There isn't a false note in the story.Perhaps the power of this book lies in the writing of Ng. Her prose is lyrical and light, allowing you to float in the scenes, often between characters, as if you are a literary ghost spying on these people. She moves her story along when it needs to, and allows certain scenes to linger when needed. The effect is magnificent. She also embues the realities of racism, that appropriately jar the reader, which at first seem to be just a "matter of the times" (she painfully uses the word Oriental to describe people) but in reality plays a bigger role in the story. I appreciated it.By the time you read the final page, you realize Ng has managed to create such a reality, and that when it ends, there is a sense of loss. Much like the family must deal with the loss of Lydia, we must deal with the loss of these imperfect and real people. This book reveals much, about them, about us, about our country, about our society. It is a book that begs for conversation, that begs to be discussed, interpreted, and argued over. It is a book that will be with you for a long time.I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

224 of 246 people found the following review helpful. Haunting By Experienced Editor Stereotypes. Appearances. Expectations. They blind us to each other and skew communication in so many ways. Each member of the Lee family sees the world through his or her own experiences and cannot understand how this affects others. Nothing unusual here--we all have our viewpoints and unintentional blinders. What sets Everything I Never Told You apart and makes the book special is twofold: beautiful plotting and beautiful writing. The plot is a graceful blending of present and past. Page one reveals that sixteen-year-old Lydia Lee is dead, but she comes to life for the reader when Chapter Two asks "How had it begun?" The answer travels back two generations, revealing dreams and disappointments of her parents, grandparents, older brother and younger sister, while also showing the actions and reactions of her family in the aftermath of her death. Each family member has a different thought about what happened to Lydia, and we don't learn the truth until the very end. In this regard, it's a successful mystery. But it's also much more.Lydia's Chinese father, James, has felt defined by racial stereotypes all his life. Lydia's caucasian mother, Marilyn, has been governed by her own mother's need to maintain proper appearances. The unrealistic expectations James and Marilyn place on their own children have molded Lydia and her siblings, Nathan and Hannah. The writing is nuanced and gentle. No sledgehammers here--the reader is allowed to knit together the pieces of the individual characters' stories to see a bigger picture. These are people who are trying to do the right thing from their own perspective, and their conflicts come about because they don't realize that situations look completely different to someone else. Although the characters are all flawed, they are presented in a nonjudgmental way that lets the reader care about their struggles and their sincerity. Since different readers will bring different expectations and experiences to the story, it's safe to say the novel will be slightly different for each one. This story is haunting but it's not a ghost story, even though the main character is dead. Instead, it's haunting in the sense that it stayed with me after I had closed the cover. The beauty of the writing lingered, as did the spirits of the characters.Readers looking for a lively action-adventure or police-procedural mystery will be disappointed. Those who like a thoughtful, well-written, character-driven novel built around a central mysterious event will enjoy Everything I Never Told You.

A lost son…and a desperate bride…. Frederick ‘Mouse’ Merriweather, Baron Axbridge was raised in the slums of London, England. Seeking to better himself, he enlisted in the Army as a callow youth, and saw action in the Napoleonic Wars. Recruited to be a member of Colonel Elliot’s specialized group, The Angels of Death, he forged friendships with those men that would never die, and was ennobled as a reward for completing a daring rescue mission. When he fell in love with Lady Julia Lovett, he thought he finally had everything he wanted in life—until the man she’d loved so many years before walked into the church and objected to their wedding. Lady Julia Lovett’s heart belongs to Freddie. But no matter how much she tries to convince Freddie that the man she once loved, Lord Charles Tempest means nothing to her now, he won’t believe her, as he doesn’t think a gutter rat like him is good enough for a noblewoman like her. So, there’s only one thing left for Julia to do…she will risk all to prove her love to Freddie—even if it means ruining her reputation. Secrets are about to be exposed concerning Freddie’s past—and Julia and Freddie will find that as long as they are together, they can face anything.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I agree with the hero. By Lily The story could be good. The problem: I agree too strongly with the Hero. The heroine should put him first above all others. Instead, she goes all goo-goo eyed about her ex-fiance on her wedding day. The hero made a fast exit and chose to end the story of their relationship. Only, the heroine believes sex will solve the situation. She dons a red dress (from his bedroom) and makes her move. Egads! how unrealistic (especially in a Regency period setting). Unable to relate to the heroine, I stuck with the hero's option and ended the story right there.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. unfortunately awful. By Amy E. White I read a lot of historical romance and the styles and quality varies significantly, but it's rare that I have real trouble becoming engaged in a book or finishing. This book was rambling and disjointed with a lot of pointless, uninteresting characters. Nothing much happens except the two main characters trying to make up their minds whether or not they want to get married. Yawn. Too many other, extraneous things happen that do nothing to move the story along, poor punctuation/grammar, improper use of words, and an excess of badly executed plot devices are used. If an editor was involved in producing this book, I'd be shocked, although one was desperately needed. I read to the end of this slog, skimming so as get to the end asap. I recommend skipping this book and I certainly won't be reading anything more by this author.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It was good By lilirishpiper1982 I can't really say this was my favorite Marley Mathews book. Overall, it seemed rushed and lacking the romance we have read in the other books. The plot and characters were engaging, which made the reading easy. The plot twist came in early in the book, which made the book seem longer then it actually was. I give this book a four star rating...even though, it's more like a 3.5.

Excerpt from Crete the Forerunner of GreeceThe recent discoveries in Crete have added a new horizon to European civilization. A new standpoint has been at the same time obtained for surveying not only the Ancient Classical World of Greece and Rome, but the modern world in which we live. This revelation of the past has thus more than an archaeological interest. It concerns all history and must affect the mental attitude of our own and future generations in many departments of knowledge. At the same time, the complexity of the details and the multiplicity of the recent explorations, and the fact that many of the results are as yet imperfectly published, must make it extremely difficult for the ordinary intelligent reader to gain a comprehensive idea of this "Greece beyond Greece," brought to light on Cretan soil. For more advanced archæological students, indeed, Mr. Ronald Burrows' work on The Recent Discoveries in Crete has supplied a useful summary. But for the general reading public a simpler statement was required, and it seems to me that this service has been successfully rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Hawes in the present book.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Opposites in every way, Chase and Arianna have been bitter rivals since childhood. Constantly in competition, they fight incessantly, making it nearly impossible for them to be in the same room with each other. Until they slept together. Sex changes everything. In one emotional evening, they go from enemies to lovers. Hate quickly evolves into passionate lust, but old habits die hard. The love growing between them can’t erase a lifetime of animosity. The two quickly fall back into old routines of spite and vengeance, and their relationship crumbles under the weight of their deep-seated distrust. Chase and Arianna spend the next two years on opposite sides of the globe, avoiding each other at all costs. Despite the lies they tell themselves, neither one is ready to let go. Even though they are both engaged to other people, they can’t find it in their hearts to forgive each other or to move forward. A family emergency calls Arianna home, where they have no choice but to face each other again. Will they finally admit the truth, or will they remain forever trapped between love and hate?

Does it make sense to write a review for the 2nd book before the 1st? I'm not sure, but this book had a twist that I never saw coming! It is kind of refreshing to have the female character so flawed and damaged for a change. It is always the male that has baggage and issues, I was kind of surprised that this book was just the opposite.Chase is the sweet, yet sexy and tough football player and Arianna is the angry and injured former tennis superstar, the daddy's girl, the Golden Girl of the media. The things that she goes through in this book had me actually disliking her for most of the book, but it was so worth it in the end. There is just enough angst in this book to suck you in and keep you reading all night long.I absolutely have found a new favorite author in Isabelle Richards! I hope she keeps the hits coming.

It started out really good, but by the end I was emotionally and mentally exhausted. All the two main characters do is fight horribly with each other (sometimes physically), break up, and then get back together - the entire book! It was a never-ending cycle. It got to the point where I genuinely couldn't even understand why they were ever together in the first place. The author does not do a good job of highlighting the positive aspects of their relationship, or the love between them. They both repeatedly say throughout the book that the other one "gets me", which frankly, makes absolutely no sense. If someone truly "gets you", they understand you and your actions and what makes you tick, which means less arguments and misunderstandings. For every good interaction they had there were at least 20 fights or misunderstandings, coupled with a handful of explosive breakups. In my opinion, these two didn't get each other whatsoever. The breakups always happened when Ari left (typically the country) without waiting for an explanation of the situation (usually some absurd misunderstanding or assumption on her part). It was ridiculous. This is probably one of the most toxic book romances I've ever read. And on top of that there was really only one sex scene - which was when they were 17, so it wasn't hot at all. It seemed awkward. All of the other mentions of sex were in stories relayed to the other characters in the book. By the end of this book, I wasn't even rooting for these two. It was the opposite. I felt these two had no business even being together. I mean really, how many cheating misunderstandings does one couple experience before it's time to call it quits? I can't even imagine what book two will be like. If you're into really toxic relationships and tons of arguing, than this is the book for you. Otherwise avoid this one at all costs.

Fear isn’t a dirty word. ” Toxic By Amy Bosica Actual Rating: 4.5 Stars!“Love is scary and intense and confusing.” “At one time or another, we’re all cowards in the face of something unpredictable and unknown. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Fear isn’t a dirty word.”Toxic. Captivating. Intoxicating. Angsty. Those are just a few words to describe this book. Hate to Love is one of those stories that you are just going to love to hate ;)Hate To Love follows the story of Chase and Arianna. Chase and Arianna have been mortal enmities for as long as anyone can remember. That is until one night, everything changed. One night, their hate turns into passion. And you know what they say; sex changes everything. Chase and Arianna develop an intriguing relationship. On the outside, when friends are around, they act like they can’t stand each other. But behind closed doors, their hate is transformed into passion, lust, maybe even love. But, as their relationship continues on, the lies that they tell will turn what they have into something toxic. Things spiral out of control and some actions can’t be taken back…..Fast forward 2 years. Both Chase and Arianna have supposedly moved on. However, they’ve never really been able to let go. When the two of them are forced back together, they no longer have the option of avoiding each other. Will the two of them finally be able to forgive and forget and finally move on??I have to say, I am completely hooked on this book! I am dying to know what happens next! The way things left off!!!! Ack!!! I am just dying!!Let me just say, this is my first book by Isabelle Richards and it most certainly will not be my last. This book captivated me from the very beginning. I knew that this book would take me on one heck of a ride and with lines like this: “I can’t forgive her! She eviscerated me! She made me fall in love with her. She took my heart, my soul, and everything that was ever good in me and pissed all over it. That’s not something you just move on from. We were enemies before, and that’s exactly what we should have stayed. If we had, maybe I’d still be whole! You want a villain to blame? Look at her.”, lets just say, it did not disappoint.Hate to Love You was a fantastic read. The characters were captivating. Their story was intriguing. I was hopelessly lost in the toxic relationship that Chase and Arianna had. I found myself addicted to their story. Yes, they frustrated me to no end. They were both stubborn and wrong; too proud to see the truth that was staring them in the face. And when they weren’t at each other’s throats, their chemistry was off the charts! This is one of those stories that will have you yelling at your kindle for them to get their acts together! And just when you think things are going into the right direction, a nice little twist is thrown in there. A twist that will leave you screaming for the next book to see how it will all play out! I for one can not wait to get my hands on the next book!!!!*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, via SFab PR & Marketing, in exchange for an honest review*

Two Iron Druid short stories, previously available only in limited release, have now been revised and made available worldwide! "Kaibab Unbound" occurs just a couple of weeks before the events of HOUNDED, book one of the series. Before Atticus gets drawn into the battles of gods and monsters, he has to protect one of the earth's elementals from an accomplished coven that wants to steal its power for their own. The events of "A Test of Mettle" happen concurrently with book 3 of the series, HAMMERED, as Granuaile MacTiernan and Oberon discover that Atticus doesn't have the final say over who can become a Druid's apprentice. These stories serve both as an introduction to the New York Times bestselling series and as exciting background for longtime fans.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Never disappointed by this author By mary I purchased all the books in the Iron Druid Chronicles. This is the type of fantasy story I very much like and for which I search continuously. Hearne's stories are fun, well written, keep the characters stable yet able to learn and develop, and thoughtful, have story drama mixed with sprinklings of comedy; and I like the characters. So many authors write a very good first book intending to write a series. Too many of these series are disappointing beyond that first or second novel. Hearne's stories stay strong and each one could stand on its own. But buy the first one and enjoy the adventure through the series. I re-read the stories periodically. The stories do not grow stale.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice additions to the series. By Lowcountry Book Lover The first story takes place prior to book one and gives us some background on Atticus and Oberon along with an explanation or example for why he dislikes witches so much. 5/5 stars. The second story takes place during book 3 and focuses on a test Granuile must face. It's told in first person present and that can be tricky. Not bad but I didn't really feel a whole lot other than the hard decision she has to make to pass the test. 3/5 stars.

In 2004, the United States, five Central American countries, and the Dominican Republic signed the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), signaling the region's commitment to a neoliberal economic model. For many, however, neoliberalism had lost its luster as the new century dawned, and resistance movements began to gather force. Contesting Trade in Central America is the first book-length study of the debate over CAFTA, tracing the agreement's drafting, its passage, and its aftermath across Central America.

Rose J. Spalding draws on nearly two hundred interviews with representatives from government, business, civil society, and social movements to analyze the relationship between the advance of free market reform in Central America and the parallel rise of resistance movements. She views this dynamic through the lens of Karl Polanyi's "double movement" theory, which posits that significant shifts toward market economics will trigger oppositional, self-protective social countermovements. Examining the negotiations, political dynamics, and agents involved in the passage of CAFTA in Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, Spalding argues that CAFTA served as a high-profile symbol against which Central American oppositions could rally. Ultimately, she writes, post-neoliberal reform "involves not just the design of appropriate policy mixes and sequences, but also the hard work of building sustainable and inclusive political coalitions, ones that prioritize the quality of social bonds over raw economic freedom."

Review "The book provides us with a nuanced—and balanced—account that illustrates the ways in which the distinct political and economic histories of these three countries led to the process unfolding in varied ways among them. . . . This is a very important contribution to the literature about market opening in Latin America." (Laura Enríquez, Professor of Sociology, University of California, Berkeley)"This work makes a significant contribution to the field in a number of ways. . . . Scholars of social movements will be particularly interested in the rich discussion of the grassroots mobilization against CAFTA, which draws on both transnational social movement (TSM) theory and framing analysis. . . . This book will be obligatory reading for anyone interested in free trade and social movement organizing in Central America." A Must Read for Central American Scholars By carlos denton Very few serious scholars study and write about Central America and, as a result, it was a pleasure to find Spalding's book and to have her share her visión of the dynamics which led to the signing of the Central American Free Trade Agreement CAFTA with the United States. Her well documented study of how different groups responded to the proposal to enter into this relationship is worth reading and forms part of the literatura about the región. This is a book for scholars and it provides an unusually accurate visión of the dynamics of Central American politics.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Heartwarming and Tender Retelling By Meredith L. Burton As an avid devourer of fairy tales, I always appreciate authors who create unique retellings that resemble the original material but expand upon it or employ different settings. The Wulver's Rose is an enthralling version of Beauty and the Beast. Ms. Wand's voice is gentle but poignant, and the story is filled with engaging and vivid characters. Set in Scotland, the Wulver's Rose recounts the plight of a young woman named Bonnie. When a terrible accident drives Bonnie's family away from their comfortable lives to a remote cottage in Inverness, Bonnie is plagued by guilt and recurring dreams of a child crying out for help. When Bonnie's father embarks upon a journey and crosses paths with a wulver, (a wolfish beast who lives in an abandoned castle and tends a rosebush in the dead of winter), Bonnie's life will never be the same.Rich with authentic dialect and complex situations, this addition to the Beauty and the Beast cannon is similar but different from the original tale. I especially love how this version delves into the heroine's reasons for her sacrifice. Ms. Wand also provides a moving and beautiful motivation for the beast character that explains his actions more thoroughly than in the original tale. Please give this riveting story a chance. God bless you all.NOTE; The Wulver's Rose is also available in the wonderful anthology entitled Five Enchanted Roses, a book that contains unique and beautiful renditions of the classic tale. As The Wulver's Rose was my favorite story in the collection, I felt compelled to write this review. I was not asked to do so by either the author or publisher. All opinions are my own.

The Best Beauty and the Beast Retelling By The Script Spinner When Beauty and the Beast is set in Scotland...and the rose is not what it seems....I love our heroine, Bonnie! She keeps the same sweetness as the original Belle with a fresh vulnerability brought on by the guilt of feeling she's let down her family. The love between family here is all so heart-warming and real. The historical feel of the times is very authentic, the mood flowing from chilling to cozy, the writing lovely and loving....Really, this is just the most beautiful retelling of the beloved classic that I have read! So go treat yourself, it is FREE after all. Probably one of the best free novellas available.

The Wulver's Rose is a historical retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Hayden Wand. The story is set in Scotland in the 1600s and 1700s. One of the last witches of the world has cursed Lauchlan, her former brother-in-law, and his daughter to be trapped in the forms of a wulver (half-human, half-wolf) and a rosebush. Nearly a century passes, and her curse will soon result in their complete destruction. At about this time, young Bonnie Alleway’s family suffers some terrible losses, and she blames herself for their suffering. They lose their home and their wealth, and two of her siblings suffer severe after-effects to their health. Her brother urges her to forgive herself as he has forgiven her, but she has trouble. Her family relocates to a tiny cottage in rural Scotland where she begins to sense a dark evil and hears a repeated plea for help. For comfort, she clings to her faith and a simple prayer she learned as a child, and she holds onto both of these after her father plucks a rose and a monster demands her in payment for her father’s mistake. Hoping for redemption, Bonnie meets the wulver’s demand, but she still must discover why God has led her to the beast’s castle as well as whose cries she hears in her nightmares.

Years later, when I began to write again, I realized that I had lost touch with the best book I'd ever read on writing and was able to find a used copy for this now-out-of-print classic. And now, upon rereading my copy, I am again overwhelmed by this man's genius. His advise is spot-on, and his way of explaining why is ALSO spot-on.If you're a writer, buy everything this man ever wrote (only a few books)and keep them close to you when you sit down at the computer. You won't regret it.

I have read a number of other books about writing, some very good, but for me, this one is one of the two best I've ever read on the subject (the other is King's "On Writing").One of the things that this book does, as does King's, is explore not only the craft of writing (weed out adverbs, etc.) but also the emotional experience of being a writer. I frequently talk to groups about writing or teach seminars on the subject, and I always try to do the same thing for those writers that Provost did for me. I also quote the sentiment that he expresses in this book -- that "sometimes another writer will understand what the rest of the world will not." I don't think there's been a more evocative, succinct testament to the importance of fellowship...ever.I know Provost has other books on the topic, and they are surely good, and recommended. But don't pass this one up. It's got game.Frank Scalise, author of ALL THAT COUNTS (a novel) and A STREET OFFICER'S GUIDE TO REPORT WRITING (a textbook)AKA Frank Zafiro, author of the River City series and other crime fiction novelsAu

He says things in a way that makes them easy to grasp and apply to your own writing. This book was written in the 1980s but all of it still applies to writing today. The title alone is a lesson--Make Every Word Count. And he goes on to teach you exactly how to do that. His explanation of writing that works made me rethink my approach to writing. he has a section called "If The Writer is Seen at Work, The Writing Won't Work" that really made me understand that issue in writing. He sets out to communicate and he does a brilliant job doing that. He doesn't make writing obscure or difficult. He clarifies how to do it and do it well. I definitely recommend this book to all writers at any level of their careers. There are many gems in it worth discovering.

I determined at two different times early in the book that I would send the publicist a note saying "thank you, but I had to dnf it and can't do a review". Then I'd change my mind, give it another day, another chapter to get better and it would. That inconsistency in the story drove me nuts. There were times when I loved these two characters and their scarred souls, but then the way Singh wrote certain scenes, I was going "wtf?"Molly had a traumatic event happen (which involved a huge media circus) during her adolescent years that left huge scars. (And I need to take just a moment to state that she tells you this over and over and over and over again throughout the first 25% of the book...OMG, that alone drove me batty.) But she's so drawn to Fox, rock star extraordinaire, that she decides that she can look past his fame and just have some rocking sex with him for a month. In her mental voice, we hear all the time about how she hates that he's a rock star and everything that symbolizes, but in the next breath she's calling him "her rock star" like an over-the-top fangirl...and I could almost forgive that at first, but it goes on way past the halfway mark when he should be a person in her mind, not the rock god. Ugh. And I'll admit that's just a couple of things that really bugged me about this book. But there were other things that I truly loved. I loved the guys in the band and the family they have built for each other. Those guys are all equally complex and liked the glimpses of their story lines. I liked the way they all treated Molly with respect and helped to protect her. And overall, I enjoyed both of Molly and Fox's complex backstories. I think that their current story needed to be heavily worked on because it had promise but those little glimpses of what the story could be kept me reading. Eventually, I did enjoy the last 10% of the book and those final events. Finally, there was a heroine in Molly worth cheering for and Fox maintained the steadfast, caring guy he always was throughout the book. I loved him and no matter what their agreement, he always had bigger plans for him and Molly than he let on.There was a minor section at the 85% mark where I wanted to beat Ms. Singh's editor for allowing it to remain...teasing of events happening off the page that were obviously going to be coming in another book, but if you aren't going to reveal, don't tease...especially in passive narration. UGH!I'll be honest, if it wasn't for the author's name on this book, I would have dnf'ed it several times. Instead I stuck it out and in the end, I was happy that I did. But overall, it wasn't really a book that I'd recommend. Although it kicks off a promising series and I really did enjoy all the characters in this rock band, I probably won't be reading any of the other books.I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I re read some of the books obsessively so when this series was announced I was beside myself. This was the author that gave me Judd Lauren, Kaleb Krycheck and Lucas Hunter to name a few. So, it is with a heavy heart that I rate this book two stars and I will explain why.First and foremost, nothing happens. Literally, nothing happens. There's very little conflict and almost all of it is internal. Molly is scarred by a dysfunctional childhood and parents who failed her utterly. She doesn't trust easily as a result and prefers to blend into the background. Fox is a rock star who also bears scars from childhood and just wants to be liked for himself. He sees Molly at a party and it's insta lust- this is the only woman for me-even though I haven't spoken a word to her- but I must have her now! I can totally suspend disbelief here because this is after all a romance and in fantasies love or lust at first sight is totally possible. Except it just didn't work for me here because there's simply nothing about Molly that is remotely interesting. In other words, she is as dull as dish water. I could believe Fox found her attractive and lusted after her but the whole I must have her, she is mine forever didn't ring true. I wanted Singh to show me why Fox was so adamant Molly was it for him. Why does this rock God who could have any woman in the world want this one specifically? I never got the answer to that. Instead, we get some conversations and a few fights between numerous sex scenes. While I love some sexy times just as much as the next person in this book they became so repetitive that they just overwhelm. It was basically the same sex scene over and over again. Fox was the quintessential Singh hero to an extent. He was Alpha-ish, possessive and super protective but he too fell flat. He never really came to life for me. His band mates were more interesting and better developed than he was (Noah, now there's a book I'm looking forward to). Anyway, I can honestly say that of all the Singh books I've read even the ones I didn't really care for ( here's looking at you Mine to Possess) I could hardly bring myself to put down. Rock Addiction, on the other hand, I could have easily put down and never picked back up again. Then, why did I slog through this one? Well, it is well written. In spite of a dull plot and lackluster main characters Singh simply doesn't have it in her to write a bad book. There are scenes that are magical all of them involving the secondary characters and other members of the band. Some of the dialogue and interactions between the boys were reminiscent of the Changelings. I kept reading just to see what was going to happen to Molly's friend Charlotte and her demanding boss T- Rex. That's a book I'm really looking forward to as well as finding out what the heck is in those Memos drummer David sent Molly's sister Thea. I do not recommend this book to anyone new to this author as it is definitely not a good representation of her immense talent. If you are a fan it is worth reading just to familiarize yourself with the characters because I have every faith that this book was just a blip in the radar and the rest of the series are going to rock.

Decent start to a new rock group based, contemporary romance series By BJ's Reviews Nalini Singh is well known for her paranormal romance (PNR) Psy-Changeling and Guild Hunter's series. With a combined over 345,000 ratings on Goodreads averaging a 4.19 rating, it's safe to say that Nalini Singh is amongst one of today's best liked PNR writers. Joining the recent new trend towards diversification away from relying solely on PNR, Ms. Singh now joins other famous PNR writers, like Kresley Cole, who have recently released contemporary romance books. In this case, Ms. Singh has picked one of romance readers' favorite types, a hot rock 'n' roll love story!Although this book is labeled as a contemporary romance, it really has much more of a new adult (NA) feel to it. In addition, to the plentiful, hot, steamy scenes, Rock Addiction also fits the common NA theme of self-discovery. Both the hero and heroine must learn to cope with past issues prior to learning how to truly love. As a consequence, this is a book particularly suited for readers that enjoy this sub-genre.Growing up in a political family, Molly Webster was used to the media spotlight, until a devastating scandal taught her it's ugly side. After her horrifying experience, spurred by her family's addiction obsessed mistakes, she has made it her life's mission to: (1) avoid addictions of any types and (2) lead a life of obscurity. So imagine her surprise when one of the most famous rock stars, Zachary Fox, takes notice of her. Fox, is one of her sister's biggest clients (her sister Thea is a publicist). Expecting nothing more than an anonymous, one-night stand, Molly succumbs to Fox's sexy, muscled, tattooed and pierced irresistible package. When Fox tells her he wants more, she instantly gets overwhelmed. So he proposes a limited arrangement: a one month fling, with no public outings where they can be recognized. Even as he proposes the arrangement, Fox knows that one month with Molly will never be enough. Fox, however, figures that by the time his vacation in New Zealand, Molly's hometown, is up; she too will be begging for more. But Fox is unprepared for the intensity of Molly's beliefs. Moreover, even if she can overcome her demons, being the lover of a rock star has its own challenges. Then there is also his own scarred past which presents its own associations where love is concerned. Can a HEA possibly be in the stars for this couple?I do have to say that it took me a while to get into this story. The romance, particularly Fox's strong conviction that Molly was the girl for him, just seemed a little too instantaneous. Once I worked through that, however, I did really enjoy this story, especially Fox's character. He's the perfect alpha, sexy protective type. My favorite type of hero! The steamy scenes were also memorable, especially when Fox let his dominant side take over. All in all, Rock Addiction is a decent start to a new rock group based, contemporary romance series. The glimpses of some of the other band members, including David, Fox's band's drummer, and Thea (Molly's publicist, sister), including their numerous memos to one another, documenting the pros and cons to starting a relationship, promises to be an interesting start to the next book in this Rock Kiss series.Source: Review copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’m not sure who his intended audience is, but this does not seem to suit either beginning writers or more advance writers. In Part One (pages 1-145), Gerke presents some frequently given writing advice. Topics range from prologues to amount of detail to particular grammatical features, such as gerunds and passives. For each, he presents the stand of those for the device and the position of those against, and then his own opinion on the topic, and he gives reasons why each takes the position they do. For each topic, these opinions are followed by a section Gerke calls “Getting Past the Gatekeepers,” in which he tells novelists how to avoid getting their novel instantly rejected by agents and publishers who may be against the device in focus. For example, when discussing whether or not prologues are acceptable, he gives the viewpoint of the opposing sides (never versus Sure, why not?), plus his own opinion, which seems to go along with the ‘Sure, why not’ group. To get past the gatekeepers he says to avoid titling a section “Prologue,” and to call it “Chapter One” instead.Following Gerke’s own formula, here is My Opinion on this section: Beginning writers will not find enough solid information in this section to make it useful. He may say what the various opinions are, but if a beginning author doesn’t yet understand showing versus telling or point of view, Part One will neither help him or her handle the device well nor make an informed decision about which opinion given is most valid. On the other hand, experienced writers have probably already figured out what Gerke mainly ends up saying: it depends. Sometimes third person works, sometimes it doesn’t. Usually showing is better, but sometimes we slip a little telling in there to accomplish a particular purpose. A writer should learn what these devices are, practice using them, and come understand how, when, and where they are most effective.Part Two of this book (pages 147-179) is where Gerke makes his main point: “You must engage your reader from beginning to end.” This is not revolutionary. In fact, much of what is stated in this section is not new; Gerke says so himself: “There’s really nothing new or surprising in what we’re learning…” (169). I believe Gerke feels his approach is different because he tries to use brain chemistry to give us new understanding on the matter. I found two problems with this. First of all, as I mentioned, the main points were nothing new: engage the readers, create a main character readers can relate to, make your readers feel as though they are experiencing the events alongside the characters (transport your readers), add conflict… Secondly, the “science” he uses in this section is weak. In a sense, he seems to think so too. Here are some of his own statements about this material: “The findings about oxytocin and narrative are validated by Dr. Zak’s laboratory work, but much of the rest of it is extrapolation and his educated guesses” (151). “Dr. Zak was pretty much horrified when I told him I wanted something like a brain chemistry story map. That’s because we can observe and theorize about what’s going on in a reader’s mind…But that doesn’t mean we’d understand it or be able to do it intentionally” (162). And he quotes Dr. Zak as saying on this matter, “I think this is where the art beats the science…Writers have deep intuitions on how to engage readers and how to do this across genres, but the science of what is happening step by step, which would allow one to reverse engineer the process, simply isn’t there” (162).My Opinion: Gerke believes he is revolutionizing how we write, saying that what we need to do is use the science of the brain. However, the scientist says this isn’t possible to do yet. That doesn’t stop Gerke, though; he goes right on to build his story map, even while adding qualifiers: it’s what may go on in a reader’s brain and the details about the hormones involved are simply a guess.Part Three of the book summarizes the ideas of a number of others and covers the monomyth—the hero’s journey, character archtypes, and how to engage your readers’ emotions. My Opinion on the book as a whole: I admit that my opinion is partially formed by this book’s errors (for example, implying that Chicago Manual of Style’s guidelines are rules that should not be broken—CMS considers them guidelines), contradictions (spending Part One debunking the rules and then stating “Theoretically, some of these rules can be used to strengthen a section (or an entire manuscript) that isn’t working,” (p. 147) followed by a number of examples of how these rules can help), and guesses about the science (as mentioned above). Gerke justifies the need for this book of his by stating readers don’t really care about craft, so we need to get away from craft. Yet the same could be said about what Gerke teaches; when reading a story, readers don’t really care about what’s going on in their brain or about whether the story conforms to the monomyth. The rules of craft and Gerke’s suggestions presented here are all possible tools writers can use to engage readers. I just feel that the material is presented in more depth elsewhere and in a way that will do a better job of helping novelists improve their skills. Unless you are intrigued by how the brain chemistry may figure in to the way readers react to a story, save your money. If you are wanting a book that gives more usable instruction, choose a different one, perhaps James Scott Bell’s Plot and Structure for a start.

Jeff has an amazing way of "talking" to you through his words and it feels like he has your back because he completely gets your struggles. This book opened my eyes to what is transportation and why is it so important. In understanding brain chemistry released at specific times for specific events in your manuscript, you have the ability to fine-tune each chapter. This book has already been abused, marked-up, sticky noted, and has found a forever home. Thanks Jeff!

Great resource for writers, especially those paralyzed by "rules" By Christopher or Bethany Jennings This is a fantastic resource, particularly for the writer who is stuck in the paralyzing stage of trying to obey all the "rules." There are three portions to the book, which are sort of unique from each other:PART ONE goes through various writing rules, chapter by chapter, and gives the "for" and "against" for each one, and a small manifesto for you to fill out at the end, proclaiming your stance (opinions which you are given permission to change however and whenever you want!). The first several chapters were very refreshing and satisfying, and it was wonderful to stake out where I stood on the "rules" and forget about the alternate view. As this portion went on, though, I found myself skimming a bit...a lot of the rules discussed were little things I didn't care about or had settled in my mind a long time ago. I felt like this section could have been covered in just a few chapters and then a big "you get the idea," but there are probably some writers who can really benefit from those chapters too.PART TWO is short, and talks about brain chemistry and why certain kinds of stories are likely to delight readers and create a connection with them. Again, I felt like it could have been summed up more quickly, but it wasn't too technical, which made it approachable and easy to understand.PART THREE is in my opinion the real meat of the book - having gone through the rules and encouraged you to toss the "rulebook," Gerke uses Part 3 to explore some very classic formulas, archetypes, and such that are found in classic, popular, and beloved fiction. Readers connect with these things, so if your book contains them it may be compelling as well. These are not rules, but rather helpful aides to making your reader fall in love with your book, if you use them. Personally I was quite excited to discover that my own work in progress contained most, if not all, of the monomyth (hero's journey) elements! That section was a thrill to read...very encouraging. In summary, there is a LOT of good information here - and it is not only actionable but exciting to learn. I felt it could be shorter in places, and once in awhile I was amused to see Gerke suggesting what appear to be rules, himself!...but I imagine he'd probably be the first to point out that they're only guidelines and free to be broken. ;) As he teaches in the book, the first and most important thing is to hook your reader from beginning to end. And "The Irresistible Novel" is a great resource to help you do that!
