Review "A beautifully composed novel, The Clay Remembers was a pleasure to read and review. Ms. Miller has done a great deal of historical research on a unique topic, all the while weaving together a fictional story surrounding it. I loved the romantic undertones as Anna learns to accept others into her life." -Heather Osborne, Readers Favorite

By Amazon Customer This was a wonderfully-written tale of a young woman, escaping from a horrible past, and rebuilding herself as a strong and independent woman. Sharon's use of Native American legend touched a deep chord within me, as I have Native American blood myself. This book was enough to keep me in its clutches until, after a marathon session of three days' reading (taking short bathroom and meal breaks), I'd finally reached its conclusion! It was even enough to keep my attention away from my favorite sport of hockey, and those who know me know how profound THAT is!I loved Sharon's development of characters, fell in love with the sweet main character, and harbored a fierce hatred for her ex-husband right from the get-go. Sharon's extensive research into archaeology and clay making were both evident. I can't wait for the second book to come out! Well done!

After a whirlwind romance and a wedding befitting the son of the elite Robinsons, Anna learns Foster's reason for choosing her to marry. With the help of a friend, she leaves her abusive husband and marriage and begins a new life far away from his clutches. She'd told no one her plans, but the worry is always there that her husband will find her. She settles into her life and throws herself into the work she loves. As a reader, I couldn't help but love a story with such emotional depth and a character (one who possesses the ability to "see" the story behind the artifacts she unearths) who is as real as Anna. I highly recommend The Clay Remembers and I’m looking forward to reading Book II in the series.

Looking forward to second novel By LINDA MURPHY “The Clay Remembers” is a narrative novel that touches on several of life’s challenges: domestic violence, dysfunctional family life and women’s career goals. The challenges are balanced with the power of friendships, the power of love, and the power gained through strength of character. I look forward to reading the second novel in the series to see how the author traces these elements back in time.

The Dark Masters: Tales Of Nevaeh: Volume II, by David Wind

Review A brilliant escape from reality... into a brilliantly designed world...ByPelican Freak (AMAZON TOP 1000 REVIEWER) "I have killed creatures and men. I have found terrible powers within me and met people and things who should never be but are."     When I stumbled upon this quote, deep into this epic read, I felt that it summarized a bit of Areenna's journey but might also serve to intrigue anyone who reads it and hasn't yet read this book... I share it here because it just jumped out at me as so... fitting.     I'm not usually a reader of epic journeys, fantasy or sci-fi type reads but this book makes me think maybe I should be.First of all - it does take place in the future but ... it's not one of these far-fetched futuristic deals. There is a very reasonable explanation for how the state of things came to be this way , including but not exclusively limited to our actual current state of affairs with the religious war / terrorism situation that we unfortunately seem to have going on.     There is a journey involved and without posting any spoilers - it is as much about discovering oneself as it is the main characters carrying out their task to save their people.I become so lost in this world - I still miss it, having finished this book a few weeks ago. It stayed with me more than most. Some books you just want to devour while others devour you... this one definitely devoured me for the duration - I cannot say enough.     If you're looking for a brief escape, it's right here.   Better than the first By Mrs A. Wiggins Reviews David Wind's _The Dark Masters_ is the second in his Tales of Neveah series. Like _Born to Magic_, _The Dark Masters_ follows the journey of Areena and Mikaal, two young royals whose land is under magical attack from a dark sorceress. As both grow in their abilities and use of their magic, they continue to deepen the bound between themselves while finding that Neveah's history is even more complicated than they previously thought. A Definite 5 Star Read.  Sheri Wilkinson, Goodreads Reviewer"....Vividly told, you get the feel as if you are actually there. The plot is original, the characters are well developed and the story moves at an even pace.     I highly recommend The Dark Master, Tales Of Nevaeh, (great as a stand alone) and book one Born To Magic to those who love a fantastic fantasy. I also liked the cover, it brings the story to life...."

From the Author This book is the second in the Tales Of Nevaeh series, which I started because of how the world seems to be evolving. I use a combo of science fiction & fantasy to show a possible future that grew from today's world-wide turmoil caused by terrorism and fundamentalist thinking, and to present it in an epic sword and sorcery tableau.  There have been many science fiction and fantasy writers over the past century and a half who have shown us a myriad of possibilities for our future.     The Dark MAsters: Tales Of Nevaeh, Volume II, is one of those possibilities.      This novel and series was written for readers from sixteen to seniors.  It is for anyone who wonders what the future holds.     Don't forget to download the Prequel to the Tales Of Nevaeh: Prelude To Nevaeh is a free download on Amazon.                                                                                           David Wind

By Melissa72 When I was offered the opportunity to read this book, I almost turned it down, I have been swamped with requests lately and I didn't recognize the title, but then my eyes scanned a little lower and I saw the author's name and I practically BEGGED to read it, (lol!) I was absolutely enthralled with the first book in this series and couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. I had no idea that it was out, as I tend to lose track of time, being a full-time... well full-time everything! Anyway this book is outstanding. David has a gift of story-telling and imagination that we are lucky enough to experience through his books. I know that many people think that this genre is reserved solely for me and my D&D friends, (Yes, I am a (deleted) year old Gamer, have been for over 25 years! :p) but i would recommend this book and it's predecessor to anyone who loves a good adventure, an epic fantasy, full on exciting and breath-taking action! You don't need me to reiterate the blurb, and I don't leave spoilers, but I will say that when you sit down to read this book bring a drink and maybe a snack and a good amount of time, because it is not a short read and you will be sucked up into the story and not want to put it down. I can not wait for the next installment in this series. (I not get notifications if any books are published by this author, so I won't be in the situation with the next book that I was with this one (lol!) Give this book a read, you will be so happy that you did! I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. *Note on my way to share this with you all, I saw that there is a novella, Prelude to Nevaeh available! How does this keep happening to me Xp

When David Wind released The Dark Masters, I had to buy it! Like its predecessor, it was a great read!Synopsis (from the author): Across the sea, the sorcerers known as the Dark Masters, launch a fleet of ships with tens of thousands of warriors. In Nevaeh, charged with an epic journey, Areenna and Mikaal, armed only with their psychic abilities, their swords and Areenna's bow, must travel to the desolate Frozen Mountains. There, in the unchartered dangerous region, they must discover not just the legends, but the millennia old secret awaiting them in their fight to save Nevaeh from extermination. What I liked: David Wind has created an interesting future world where women have magic, men have battle skills, and the animals are mutated versions of current creatures. I enjoyed the way our heroes bonded with their animal friends and how the animals shared power and abilities with them. The battle scenes are well done, and I think the Sixes are cool! Interspersed in the story is the growing attraction between Areenna and Mikaal and their battle to keep it at bay. I also liked the overall theme of the battle between good and evil, and the surprising twist in the mountains was a nice touch! What I didn’t like: About the only criticism I have is I thought more could have been done to explore the people Areenna and Mikaal met as they journeyed to the mountains. I’m sure it will be a part of the next book, though, so my questions will be answered!Overall impression: As with the first book, this was an excellent read! Filled with memorable characters, excellent battle scenes, and intrigue and romance, I would recommend The Dark Masters to any fantasy fan! Well done, David Wind!!My rating: 5 Stars!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. If you enjoyed Volume I, you will love The Dark Masters By Nicholas C. Rossis Having read and loved Volume I of Tales of Nevaeh, I'm now a big fan of Wind's books. I even bought Prelude to Nevaeh; a novella expanding on the back story to the series. So, when Wind offered me a chance to read The Dark Masters in exchange for an honest review, I jumped at the opportunity.I'm happy to say that he has not failed to thrill me once more. The book picks up where the Volume I left, with the two heroes heading North to find a artifact they'll need to win the upcoming war - and to make unexpected allies. Areena has now grown comfortable in the role of a leader, and in her relationship with Mikaal. This won't be enough, though, as they face not only the mutated horrors of the icy North or the Black Witch, but a new enemy; one of the Dark Masters from across the sea himself. My one complaint would be a shift of focus from the underlying philosophy that I enjoyed so much in Book I, to more action. Having said that, Wind's expert prose means the book is still a treat, and if you enjoyed Volume I, you will love The Dark Masters.

An excellent mystery By richard killblane Another masterful historical thriller by Ben King written with the same skill he did with A Bullet for Stonewall and A Bullet for Lincoln. Once again King takes his readers on a circuitous trip through history, this time in search of the mystical kabbalah. Set during World War II, the Nazis want the magical powers of the kabbalah to help them win the war, but need the help of a Jewish scholar to find it. Gruenwald has his own secret reasons for helping the enemies of his religion find it. Similar to Dan Brown’s exploration of Catholic history and beliefs in The Da Vinci Code, King’s story explores religious history of the Jews with the intrigue and suspense that will keep the reader guessing up until the end.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The novel spans the Middle Ages to pre-war Italy, ... By X The novel spans the Middle Ages to pre-war Italy, England and Germany. The novel follows the quest of Professor Greenwald to find an ancient artifact that the Nazis want to find at all costs. They assign Klaus Schwerin, a ruthless yet charming SS officer to accompany Gruenwald. Gruenwald is forced to cooperate in order to save himself and his family. The artifact has been lost for centuries and the pair pursue leads all over Europe, and the suspense only builds as they get closer to their goal. This is a well written book that I could not put down. The historical tidbits that are dropped in the course of the action are tantalizing and made me want to find out more.

Excellent Historical Action/Adventure Tale By JoeMc Excellent book…part action/adventure (think Indiana Jones), part spy (think James Bond), part World War II and part historical fiction. This novel starts in the 1300s and finishes up Post World War II with most taking place in 1938. Mr. King shows the same skill in creating a great story that will keep you up and have you turning the pages all night. Partnership between Jewish Professor Anton Gruenwald and Nazi Spy Klaus Schwerin keeps you guessing until the end.

"I was totally unprepared for the transformation that Seth's technique created in me. . . . I realized that what I thought I knew about acting up to that point was largely misguided . . . but I now had a great, talented, dedicated teacher who generously wanted to share his tools with everyone. There is muscularity, not to mention wisdom and truth to Seth's techniques. He is a wonderful teacher, and I know that having him as my first guide is one of the luckiest things to have happened to me in my career and life. And when I can't get back to class with him, I am so grateful I have this book to turn to."—Anne Hathaway

"This book is truly unlike anything else I know—these pieces are haikus on specific elements of performance and character building."—Philip Himberg, executive director, Sundance Theatre Institute

A collection of practical acting tips, tools, and exercises, An Actor's Companion is ideal for both the seasoned professionals and actors-in-training. The tips—all simple, direct, and useful—are easy to understand and even easier to apply, in both rehearsal and in performance.

An Actor's Companion: Tools for the Working Actor, by Seth Barrish

Review “With the simplicity of a Zen master and the wit of an author who knows his business, Seth Barrish offers the true gift of any teacher to a student: precise tools that are easy to grab and handy for life.” —Martin Moran, actor, playwright“After having had my fair share of overly intense and arrogant acting teachers while living in New York, Seth was a breath of fresh air. He exorcised out the ‘work’ of acting and finally brought back its true intention... ‘play.’” —Tony Hale, actor“As a casting director who has never acted, his succinct, accessible lessons help me to not only be a better reader with the actors I audition on a daily basis, but these lessons have also given me the vocabulary to direct the actors into giving a better performance.” —Jennifer Euston, casting director“I have introduced Seth’s book to my closest friends. You can now see them all on your favorite shows. Enough said.” —Sakina Jaffrey, actor“What a gem! An Actor’s Companion is not only wise, but practical. The way Seth works is the best way: going for simplicity and spontaneity. But the book is selling itself short. It’s not only an actor’s companion—it’s also a director’s companion. I know I’ll be using it.” —Frank Oz, director, actor“The tools that Seth gives actors make the director’s job easier and more exciting.” —Michael Apted, film director“Seth’s book cuts to the quick: specific, precise tools to make your acting more spontaneous. Seth’s tools helped me rediscover the joy of acting.” —Michael Stahl-David, actor“An Actor’s Companion is filled with simple, straightforward tools that are immensely freeing for any actor. They put you in your most creative and spontaneous state. I highly recommend this book!” —Peyman Moaadi, actor“Seth’s book gives actors what they need most in their very public, yet oddly isolated enterprise, and that’s a practical companion.” —David Rabe, playwright“Are you an actor?... Do yourself a favor and buy this book! Clear, concise and fun to use! I play with these tools every time I work.” —Alison Wright, actor“Over the years, my acting had become so labored that it had simply stopped being fun. This book of tools made me fall in love with acting all over again. Plus, I started booking a lot more jobs!” —Poorna Jagannathan, actor“An Actor’s Companion is a wonderful and useful book, whether you’re an old pro or just starting out—there’s something for everyone!” —Debra Monk, actor“Simple, clear cut, direct, practical actions to solve my everyday actor problems.” —Zachary Booth, actor

THE SECRET GARDEN (Illustrated), by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Amazon.com Review Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'" As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were conceived. (Ages 9 to 12)

From Publishers Weekly Soothing and mellifluous, native Briton Bailey's voice proves an excellent instrument for polishing up a new edition of Burnett's story. Bratty and spoiled Mary Lennox is orphaned when her parents fall victim to a cholera outbreak in India. As a result, Mary becomes the ward of an uncle in England she has never met. As she hesitantly tries to carve a new life for herself at imposing and secluded Misselthwaite Manor, Mary befriends a high-spirited boy named Dickon and investigates a secret garden on the Manor grounds. She also discovers a sickly young cousin, Colin, who has been shut away in a hidden Manor room. Together Mary and Dickon help Colin blossom, and in the process Mary finds her identity and melts the heart of her emotionally distant uncle. Bailey makes fluid transitions between the voices and accents of various characters, from terse Mrs. Medlock and surly groundskeeper Ben to chipper housemaid Martha. And most enjoyably, she gives Mary a believably childlike voice. A brief biography of the author is included in an introduction. Ages 6-12. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 3–6—First published in 1911, Burnett's tale of burgeoning self-awareness, newfound friendship, and the healing effects of nature is presented in an elegant, oversize volume and handsomely illustrated with Moore's detailed ink and watercolor paintings. Cleanly laid-out text pages are balanced by artwork ranging from delicate spot images to full-page renderings. The outdoor scenes are beautifully depicted, presenting realistic images of animals and flowers, with the hues gradually warming in sync with the story's progression from winter's browns and beiges to the lush colors of spring. The young protagonists—lonely Mary Lennox; her sickly and spoiled cousin, Colin; and likable local lad Dickon—bound to life in the evocative paintings, which reflect the wonders of transformations in both nature and in a child's heart. All in all, a lovely interpretation.—Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Children's Classic By Shelby Miller For those of you who haven't read this, you should. It's the story of Mary Lennox, who grew up in India, extremely spoiled by the servants, whose only job was to keep her quiet and out of the way of her parents. After her parents die she's sent to live with her uncle in England, a crotchety old man mourning the loss of his wife, who also wants nothing to do with her. Lonely, spoiled Mary explores the manor and the garden, finding all sorts of hidden secrets as well as her own happiness.A must-read for children and adults. It's the kind of story that just makes you feel warm and comfortable inside.

It is still one of my favorite books. I love the theme that children need activities and hobbies and exercise to stay healthy, physically and mentally. I wish I had my own secret garden inside a stone wall :)I think this is a wonderful book for any young child to read. The characters are good and the story is so beautiful.

I have many renditions of the Secret Garden. This luxuriously, lovely book is filled with superb illustration that really captures the mood and era of the story, which is the early 1900's. There are so MANY illustrations, Inga Moore has created a painting for nearly every page! A really lovely addition to a collection or to share with your children. If you enjoy the artwork in this book, buy "The Wind in the Willows" also illustrated by Inga Moore .Simply wonderful! In case you are unfamiliar with the story, it is the tale of a peevish, spoiled and sullen orphan girl, MARY LENOX, who comes to live in the home of her mysterious and emotionally distant uncle. She meets her sickly cousin, Colin, a young boy, hidden away from the world and convinced he is dying. Hidden behind a huge stone wall is a Secret Garden which is discovered by the girl,Mary; a garden as neglected and in need of care as these two children. As they bring the garden back to life, they bring themselves back to life as well, discovering joy and friendship in an enchanting and wonderful way. It really is a classic.

Get hooked on Heck: the maverick detective who knows no boundaries. A grisly whodunit you won’t be able to put down, perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and TV series ‘Luther’.

Heck needs to watch his back. Because someone’s watching him…

Across the south of England, a series of bizarre but fatal accidents are taking place. So when a local businessman survives a near-drowning but is found burnt alive in his car just weeks later, DS Mark ‘Heck’ Heckenburg is brought in to investigate.

Soon it appears that other recent deaths might be linked: two thieves that were bitten to death by poisonous spiders, and a driver impaled through the chest with scaffolding.

Accidents do happen but as the body count rises it’s clear that something far more sinister is at play, and it’s coming for Heck too…

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What the Heck! By Ashrae I don't normally like jumping in to a series without having read the previous books, especially at book 5, but the blurb of this one had me so intrigued that I really wanted to read it.I love books and tv shows that have bizarre ways of killing people. Probably why I still love watching Midsomer Murders! I especially like the though processes and investigation techniques required for a detective to "make the connections" between what appear to be random acts of violence. I find this more interesting to read about than the more usual serial killer books, although I do enjoy them too!So, DS Heckenburg is asked to look into a murder as a favour to his boss. His gut instincts start working almost immediately and we are soon swept up into the investigation of a number of "fatal accidents" that have befitted a host of unrelated people. Or are they unrelated? Are they just bizarre accidents? Are the corpses related? Or do the crimes go deeper than just the apparent victims? So many questions and only Heck thinks there is something more. Until his reputation leads other people to start to trust his instincts and start to believe that maybe, just maybe, he is on to something. He eventually manages to get Gail on side to help him, but she comes with baggage of her own. Will that help or hinder the investigation? More questions...A breakthrough leads to a link to a notorious gang and the action really kicks off. Heck is also targeted. He leads a charmed life, that one! And then, an explosive ending with a pretty nasty outcome for one of the characters. All in all, I enjoyed this book. There were a few references to previous cases and personal histories of the characters, but this in no way distracted me from reading the book as a stand alone. I am, tbr permitting, going to go back and read books 1-4 just to catch up as some of the references did intrigue me and I would also like to learn more about Heck and what shaped him.The book itself had a lot more substance than most Police Procedurals that I have read recently and, although I do like a book that just gets on with the story, I found myself really enjoying having a bit more depth than normal. I really got on with the author's writing style and found that this depth enhanced the overall reading experience. All in all a good read and,as already said, I will be checking out more from this author.I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having read and enjoyed the fourth book in the series - Dead Man Walking, I was well chuffed to be accepted to receive a copy of Hunted from the Publisher HarperCollins UK Avon via NetGalley in return for an honest and unbiased review. This is the fifth outing for DS Mark Heckenburg a.k.a. Heck but you don’t necessarily have to have read any of the other books to enjoy this one as a standalone as once again the author is proficient in creating characters so that you feel that you know them very quickly. The story starts as it means to go on with a bizarre accident that is told in all its gruesome glory. The accidents get increasingly complex and shocking and Heck is tasked at convincing his new temporary colleagues that these are no accidents. That’s easier said than done and Heck has to use all his “charm” and investigative skills to get them on side, particularly DC Gail Honeyford who is less than pleased that Heck has appeared and is sticking his nose into her investigation. He soon wins her over however and what follows is a fast paced and excellently written book which is so easy to read that you find the pages just flying by as you get stuck in.This book has it all - crime, thriller, police procedural, suspense, twists and turns with a good helping of grisly murders and scenes of peril all told in glorious 3D! I for one won’t forget the funnel and the jam jar in a hurry. As I said at the beginning, Paul Finch is fast becoming a favourite author of mine and I can safely say that I am a fan and I would encourage all who enjoy a well written, fast paced, edgy book with brilliant characters and unique storyline should definitely give this a go.

More great crime fiction By Liz Barnsley Highly entertaining (and gruesome in the best way possible) crime fiction here - This is my first Paul Finch novel, I did play a bit with the idea of catching up with the series before reading this- I have actually now got a little pile of Finch novels sat in my tbr pile - but in the end I decided to dive right in with the latest.Really enjoyed it. Probably more than I should have done given the premise, but I loved Heck, didnt feel as if I had lost anything by reading this one first and the story was terrifically addictive and really very clever.Heck works for the serial crimes unit which gives him great scope to get into anything - in this case a nasty accident that may not have been an accident finds him in Surrey - and when he uncovers a series of unfortunate events that seem to be plaguing the population there he decides to stay for a while. He's a great character. Likeable, a little odd but then who isnt? And he certainly thinks outside the box which makes him very intriguing. I also liked sidekick (for this novel anyway) Gail who hopefully we will meet again. The relationship between these two was one of the strengths of the novel for me, especially as someone coming in cold to a character who has already had time to develop - she is meeting him for the first time as well. The case they are investigating really is magnificently imagined, the descriptive prose when it comes to the more violent parts of "Hunted" are simply brilliant, putting you right there and definitely giving a few shivery moments. If you are an arachnophobe beware!Overall a really terrific crime novel, beautifully written, hauntingly scary at times I'm definitely a fan. I will certainly be reading the backlist and really looking forward to the next.Happy Reading Folks!*Copy via Netgalley UK**

German wunderkind writes teenage novel in German, inadvertently creating a teenage Easy Reader By MisterBrownie Finally found a short German novel (in German) that my teenage daughter enjoyed reading which is why I decided to post a recommendation. Taking a closer look, I discovered that apparently the author is a young girl, and at the time of publishing (May 2015), she is only 13 years old: some German wunderkind living near Munich in Bavaria. The book is not created as an Easy Reader German, that seems to be an accidental by-product. Absolutely amazing.

The characters are cold-hearted and jealousy can be seen in every chapter. I liked the suspense in the novel but I felt sorry for Ned. Nancy and Ned were going on a sking trip to get away from the work and cases. So they thought. As usual Nancy couldn't pass up a chance to help someone solve a case. She got involved and almost got killed. The ending of course surprised me. A person that no-one would have guessed was the enemy, was. A friendship was lost as five more friendships were made. I liked the ending and couldn't put the book down. I recommend this book to everyone.

When a routine mapping expedition uncovers what looks like ruins on the planet Theth-129, the crew of the Stardancer is thrilled to have something more exciting to do than catalogue worlds only a terraformer could love. Their trip to the world’s surface confirms their wildest hopes: their ruins really were made by natives and abandoned long ago, a find of incredible significance. But there’s more to this world than an obelisk, a set of painted caves, and a mysterious shoreline. When the sea claims one of the ‘Dancer’s senior officers, their investigation reveals that the lost civilization might not be quite so lost after all. Alysha Forrest and the crew of the Stardancer have no idea that their way of life is on trial. But before it’s over, they’ll be asked to prove themselves, and the fate of an entire world is resting on the outcome.... This first full-length novel in the Alysha Forrest series stands on its own, or can be read as part of the series (beginning with Alysha's Fall). It is part of the same universe (the Pelted) as Earthrise and Mindtouch.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. much more balanced than previous entries By MBlount My main issue with this series has been Alysha's almost suicidal thrusting herself into dangerous situations with no care for her own safety, health or wellbeing. This book finally moves her somewhat past that. I say somewhat because she still goes off on her own, ignoring her own safety protocols, and she still thinks other people need to be protected from knowing that she's been severely damaged and abused in her life. I was disappointed that she seems so stuck on protecting other people from herself too.... Surely after all this experience, she can learn to see that all she's doing is modelling the pretense of being fine, rather than real self-acceptance. In this story she was especially harsh with the two ensigns who couldn't get past their histories, when that's what she's doing too. Anyway, an interesting plot, much more nuanced emotional development in the characters and a lot of material to use going forward.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Emotionally Resonant Space Adventure By Faith This is the first of the Alysha Forrest works I've encountered, but it stands perfectly well on its own. While I suspect some of the events of the novel would have had greater emotional resonance had I already read the earlier stuff, I didn't feel like I was missing any necessary information. As for the novel itself, it was a fun but emotionally resonant space adventure (very much in the vein of Star Trek) centered around ideas of choice and closeness/distance. While there were references to earlier, darker events, the tone of the story overall never edged past bittersweet. (Which is perfect for me right now, because exams). It reads very quickly and easily, but the narrative still carries weight; this isn't a piece of fluff. It's a lovely novel of First Contact populated by rich, nuanced, female(!), furry characters, and I loved every minute

Once upon a time in a Middle Eastern land, a fat, sweet-natured little boy grows up as the son of an important ruler. His older brother was apparently still-born and so he is the heir to his father's kingdom. But far away from the royal palace a lonely prospector happens across a wild creature, half boy, half animal, roaming the forests. Eventually this strange child's adventures lead him to the capital and into the path of a platoon of deserters from Napoleon's army - the flashy, ultimately dangerous, face of Enlightenment thought in this isolated kingdom - with drastic consequences. With original poems embedded like gems in the text, this is a fable for all ages, full of shivers and delights, sadness and wonder.

But having almost reached the foot of the palace steps, the guards had already deployed themselves in ceremonial rank. They were too far away to act, intent on facing inwards to receive the procession, thrusting out their chests and staring straight ahead in front of them.Kites circled high in the sky, as though inscribing sentences of tribute upon invisible domes. A dog barked. The man came nearer, putting out his hand. The crowd collectively drew in its breath, as at the climax of the birthday fireworks, or when Dibl seized the headless goat over his shoulder and galloped with it the full length of the field. Those too far away to see his idiot smile thought he was an assassin. Those near enough to hear him were curious about his words.Juliba turned to face him from the litter, and her eyes looked down over her veil superb as the two towers on the dam at Sarapa which keeps back the fullpower of the spring waters.'He is alive! Be assured!' the man repeated. And in his eagerness to bring such news and to be believed, his fingers for a moment touched the queen's arm asit rested on the door of the litter. Now the crowd groaned, fearing the outcome ofthis scandalous contact.Juliba looked about her.'Surely it is apparent', she said, 'that I do not need the blessings of a beggar?'The footmen had put the litter down. In her haste to leave it and to mount the palace steps, her robes twisted about her as she stood up and defined for a moment the fullness of her belly. The footmen themselves took hold of the man, who was grinning and nodding vigorously, and handed him over to the guards, amid the press of the wondering crowd. And Juliba mounted the steps with dignity, and entered the palace with her attendants, and the doors of her apartments were closed upon her.The man was brought before the ruling Akond, in-Blemim, who was troubled when he heard what had happened.'How is it', he thought, 'that our actions cannot be perfectly controlled? That however well-intended, they return to haunt us with their unforeseen consequences? That sometimes the good intended by others is the very worst thing that we wish to hear?'He took the ragged man to be a creature of his Wazir, Ininin, come to trade secrets for favours. Alive, was it, when ordered destroyed? Well, then, Ininin should deal with the matter, and silence this madman. And so the Akond ordered the man, who was acarpenter named 'm Ezla, to be taken to the Wazir's court for judgement.'How can it be tolerated', he thought to himself, 'that a carpenter, touching the least hem of my wife's robe, should pronounce the blessing of life wherethere is none? Neither in the born who are dead, nor in the unborn who are not yet alive? Why, it is a Christian nonsense, and the people will see it to be so.'The Akond went in to Juliba, his queen, and was relieved to find that it was so with her, and he put his own hand freely on the shape that would be his heir, measuring the child's vigour in protesting at further confinement by comparing his kicks to those motions necessary to goad the girth of a great horse into a gallop. He was disappointed to find them sluggish. But he smiled at Juliba in encouragement, his teeth showing white within the majesty of his black beard and his eyes gleaming like polished a gate. The crowd had not dispersed, and it was notthought likely that it would disperse until the fate of 'm Ezla was announced. It moved in the square like bees over the comb, sharing opinion until it might take the perfect sweetness and structure of fact. The Wazir Ininin was seated with his officials behind a marble table. Not his beard, nor his small derisive mouth struck fear into those who were brought before him, but his immense nose that jutted above those features like the beak of an eagle. It was a symbol of his power to probe and rend. But the Wazir's heart sank when 'm Ezla came before him, for he knew him to be the brother of the wife of Bagril, his agent in the villages, and knew him, too, as a fool who might wittingly or unwittingly unravel any delicate scheme with no profit tohimself or any sensible forethought of the outcome. So foolish, in fact, as to be quite without the necessary fear of civilised men.'You touched the queen's arm?' asked the Wazir Ininin.'Excellence, the child -' began 'm Ezla, with the eagerness of someone who knows himself to bealmost dignified by the possession of astounding news.'Enough,' said Ininin. 'We do not wish to hear of it.''But, Excellence, it is a miracle!''Do you want to lose more than your fingers?' thundered the Wazir. 'There is nothing that you can tell me that I can possibly want to hear. You touched the queen on the arm with two fingers, with three? The forefinger and the middle finger, I hear? And perhaps also the fourth finger?'Witnesses were produced among the Akond's servants to swear to the lesser of these charges. One of the footmen, indeed, was of the opinion that perhaps only the middle finger had grazed the queen'sarm, had been in contact for an instant only with the fold of her cloak, even. But this opinion belonged to the minority, and accordingly the carpenter was sentenced.'m Ezla seemed unconcerned about his punishment, and when later that afternoon he was led before the executioner he made no protest except to reiterate his proclamation of a miracle: 'The child lives!' For this, and to preserve the silence and gravity of the occasion, a scarf was bound about his mouth and he appeared dumb before the crowd in the courtyard. The executioner, whom the pain of his vocation had turned into a wag, seized 'm Ezla's hand, extending the offending fingers and folding back the rest in a parody of the blessing that Juliba had spurned, and exhibited it on high to the crowd, who laughed and groaned in equal measure. Then he pressed the hand down upon the ebony block with the two fingers extended, and raised his short axe.The Akond was watching from a high window of the palace, unseen: 'In the necessary chain of command there are many weak links,' he said to himself. 'They must be cut out, so that the pull may be secure.'The axe descended, and in the hush of the crowd you might almost have heard the tiny doubleness of the blow, the cadence between bone and wood, as the blade finally met the substance that could resist it, and the severed fingers shot across the polished surface and fell into the dust.'He will speak of it no more,' thought the Akond.'But if the child really lives, it is grotesque, and cannot be allowed.'And Juliba in her apartments, with her heart pounding, knew that the incident had really given her no grounds to raise the matter again, for whatever was done was done for the best. Whatever her attendants did, they did it for her good and for the good of the country. They did what was expected. When she had first come to the palace and danced for in-Blemim, she had had vague hopes of finding good reason for a woman to play a meaningful role in the affairs of state, not least in all eviating the conditions of the poor. And she confessed as much touz-Luba, in-Blemim's grandmother, expecting to discover somewhere within the law some such licence for a queen.'Yes, my beautiful,' uz-Luba had smiled at her. 'So you think, and so have we all thought at this threshold of our life and fortune. And you being both a woman and knowing poverty have a double reason to hope for a rational justice. And for in-Blemim, too, who lives by reason, you have a right to suppose an equal desire. But the Akond rules only through the people and by custom. To live by custom is to live by expectation; laws are generally resented.''And if custom does not bring justice to all?''Custom should be the happiness of all, as being what can least be resented.'And uz-Luba had nodded at this with such quiet certainty that Juliba had created no further argument, but hung her arms about her neck and embraced her.During the night after 'm Ezla lost his fingers, the queen's waters broke and she was delivered of her sluggish son. It was natural after this to forget the incident in front of the palace steps, but occasionally in dreams the carpenter's face would appear to her, eager, shining, complicit, communicating a fact that she had steeled herself to deny. When the Akond had inspected his heir, he went in to congratulate Juliba.'Blom is perfect,' he said. 'He has eyes like honey and skin as pale as olives. And he has just the right number of toes - and fingers.'Juliba and in-Blemim looked at each other with that look of intimate wedded conspiracy which can sometimes exclude a truth. He lolled at her feet, eating dates and reciting lines of poetry that suddenly occurred to him in his happiness, though occasionally he would grimace in pain, for the dates brought on his toothache:'When the streams of Sarapa meet in the valley,When the streams of Sarapa brim in the spring,Hearts must melt in the fullness of waterThudding like swimmers to whose weary shouldersThe waters cling. The furthest echo was once a spent volley. The furthest echo was once a false startWhere the heart was launched in its lightness ofbeing,Shot from desire like the swimmer for whomThe waters part. The little swimmer, in his perfect prison! The little swimmer in the borrowed skinThat bares the heart like the blueness of snowIn the beautiful mountains above Sarapa whereThe waters begin!'This tenderness for the child brought him to a deep and unqualified joy, and he laughed aloud. The carpenter's fingers were eaten by the dogs. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The ruler (Akond) has two sons, the first a stillborn, or so they said. The younger one, Blom is an unfit heir to the Akond's kingdom and as the ruler struggles to make him the next suitable Akond, his mind keeps wandering back to the first born. Meanwhile, in a forest in a neighbouring village, there are rumours of an immortal wolf boy, half human and half beast who kills the villagers' goats and haunts the forest. A rich lonely man finds the boy and raises him as his own son. As the boy begins to grow up, his angelic beauty catches the attention of the girl living next door and she begins to relate to his loneliness. He too secretly spies on her. The story takes a turn when the girl is chosen to be the young Akond's bride. This is a classic setting for a fairytale and we can guess what happens next. But the point of the fable isn't to create suspense, anyway. What is on the outside a simple, run-of-the-mill tale, has much more to give. The romance is subtle and the relationships are delicate and intricate and in story with such a hugely mythical air, very realistically portrayed.Fuller adds another dimension to the story with the parts about a troop of deserters from Napoleon's Army who happen to come across this land and are invited to settle there by the Akond. Here we get to read Fuller's take on rationalism and progress.According to tradition, the moment the younger heir turns twenty one, the ruler has to turn over the kingdom to him and leave the palace to settle elsewhere. As Blom begins to grow up, the interactions between the current ruler (Blom's father) and the oldest Akond are very touching and beautiful. They tell us a lot about life and satisfaction, seizing the moment and the fear of death. The language is beautifully constructed and tugs at the heartstrings. The prose is a bit stilted in places, but easy enough to get through. The story is interspersed with little poems and sonnets which are apt and beautiful and give the story an even more fable-like quality. The tale is short and keeps you engrossed throughout. It is a gem of a book, really, and I am glad to have found it!

Mira is a trust fund baby playing at making it on her own as a Brooklyn barista. When Benji, her tech startup boyfriend, dumps her out of the blue, she decides a little revenge vandalism is in order. Mira updates his entry on Verity, Benji’s Wikipedia-style news aggregator, to say the two have become engaged. Hours later, he shows up at her place with an engagement ring. Chalk it up to coincidence, right? Soon after, Benji’s long-vanished co-founder Chandra shows up asking for Mira’s help. She claims Verity can nudge unlikely events into really happening — even change someone’s mind. And Chandra insists that Verity — and Mira’s newly minted fiance — can’t be trusted. ---------------- In its review of the novel, NPR said, "Tremendously enjoyable, Revision is a fluid, flexible, wonderfully dextrous debut, and I can't wait to see what Phillips does next." In a starred review, Publisher's Weekly called Revision a "terrific SF debut." It said “Phillips poses hard questions about love, loyalty, personal identity, and truth, and her answers range from fascinating to horrifying,” and that “her fresh voice will be very welcome in the SF world.”

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Imaginative, well written and fun. By Kristian Thoroughgood This was an interesting story, great premise, well written. My usual scifi stories are generally heavily plot driven, frequently action oriented. This book sits on the other end of this scale and is an excellent example of a character-driven novel. There is action, but rather than being the focus it serves to advance the drama, and to affect the protagonist Mira and her relationships. The emphasis here is on Mira’s emotions and her connections and interactions with others, and it is done very well.Revision is imaginative, well written and fun.Full review here: https://uncertaintales.wordpress.com/2015/02/13/book-review-revision-andrea-phillips/

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fun and Interesting! (I apparently like the word interesting) By Torii Gardiner This was an interesting read for me. I love the concept of this book, and I love the rules and world building around it.This book is very character driven rather than plot driven. We follow Mira through all of her decisions, and the writing behind those was quite clever (you'll understand if you read the book-- I don't want to spoil anything for you.) I enjoyed the plot quite a lot, but I had a hard time really liking Mira. Even so, I cared about her. Her age is never discussed (that I remember, it might be in the intro somewhere) but I imagine her somewhere around 22 and if that's the case she acts very much "her age". She feels like she is in that oh so wonderful stage of being utterly at a loss as to what you want your life. She's the kind of character this story needed, though. Only Mira would have made the choices that led to the amazing ending, and they were absolutely believable. I'm not sure a character I would have liked more on a personal level would have made the decisions she did. Of all the characters, I think I resonated with Joey the most which probably says a lot about how old I'm getting. For me this was a short, light, fun and interesting book. It didn't get deep into my heart, but it definitely made me think. I'm sure I will spend the next few nights dreaming about the world that this is set in, and the consequences and nudges that could befall me. There were parts of the book where I hung on every line just waiting for something insane to happen. I really enjoyed it, and I felt like it was really well written. I never felt like it was the author telling me the story, and I enjoyed the narrative of Mira talking to me.I also enjoyed that all of the characters were complex and thought out. I cared about all of the side characters, and I like that even the minor ones played a role in Mira's life enough for me to care. I would definitely suggest this book for a fun, intriguing, extremely interesting book.

By Alexander von der Linden While I have some minor quibbles with some things, this book was a solid first effort from the author, and she has definitely been placed in the "would read again" column. The main character is trying to live her own life as a 20-somethign slacker, while occasionally relying on her trust fund to keep her lights on. She doesn't get along with her parents, and hates the life that they and the rest of her family lives. I can relate to that character, which is one of the strengths of the book. Sometimes I just wanted to shake her, but I could always understand why she made the choices she did. Including the petty vandalizing of her boyfriend's Verite (quantum Wikipedia) which causes him to go from breaking up with her to proposing to her. And just like that we're off to the races. The common thread throughout the story is that the protag doesn't know what the hell she's doing. And Andrea manages to pull that off in a way that I can continue to care for and relate to the character. My quibbles are minor, as I said.1) I thought that Verite wasn't fleshed out enough. I wanted a lot more background on it and how it worked, and what could be done with it. Of course my favorite parts of Reamde by Stepenson were the wrapper parts where he talks about the MMO that the character built. That's what I wanted to see here and we didn't quite get it. But obviously the author is writing her story and not the one I see in my head.2) There's not much in the way of description of characters/places/etc. I It works well in that it keeps the prose lean and the story moving, but I would've liked descriptions as visual shorthand for the characters.Even with that, I really enjoyed this book. I'd recommend it to people who enjoyed SJ Kincaid's Insignia, Delilah Dawson's HIt, and Chuck Wendig's Atlanta Burns.
