Excerpt from African Nature Notes and ReminiscencesThe chapters comprised in the present volume were written at various times during the last ten years. Some of them have already appeared in print in the pages of the Field, Land and Water, and other papers, but the majority have remained in manuscript until now. The greatest part of the matter in the chapters on the "Lion" was written some years ago, and was intended to be the commencement of a book dealing entirely with the life-history of South African mammals. When, however, I was asked by Mr. Rowland Ward to contribute to a book he was about to publish on the Great and Small Game of Africa, all the articles in which would be written by men who had personally studied the habits of the animals they described, I gave up the idea of myself writing a less comprehensive work on similar lines, and became one of the chief contributors to Mr. Ward's large and valuable publication. My manuscript notes on the lion and some other animals were then consigned to the seclusion of a drawer in my study, from which they would probably never again have emerged had it not been for the fact that during the autumn of 1905 I had the honour to be the guest of President Roosevelt at the White House in Washington.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Selous was one of the giants of Vitorian Africa and in this work, written at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt, he compiles many of his most keen observations about life and wildlife in Africa. Fascinating not only as a period piece, Selous's thoughts are remarkably prescient about the state of game in Africa even today. Though it was written before the rise of the commercial poaching that has ravaged so much of the continent, the book gives an excellent insight into the need to carefully observe, record, and interpret the ecological signs found in the wild. Clear and lively in style, the tales told within encompass everything from dietary habits of hyaena to the effects of sleeping sickness on agriculture. Especially interesting are the authors remarkably forward-thinking ideas on race relations, ideas that would not become the rule in southern Africa for over 75 years. An altogether satisfying read.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. My comments on this Selous book. By A Customer I have read plenty of elephant hunting volumes in the likes of Bell, Stigand and several others but this Selousbook is different. It's not entirely an account of Selous'adventures with his rifle but rather as the first portion of the book's title suggests, an informative wrap-up of the ways and characteristics of various African game. Selous is a unsurpassable raconteur when it comes to telling of big game, as this book proves. There's a chapter on Selous' search for the elusive inyala antelope, and it is of great interest. A book well worth parting with your cash for. Simply a true must-buy !

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. African stories from the past by a noted figure in the history of that era. By John Wingert A good read about Africa in a bygone era. Selous was a famous professional hunter, but this book is far more nature study than hunting stories. Well written and engaging.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Love the town of Pinecraft By Book Reader I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, the Amish Brides of Pinecraft. I have come to love the town of Pinecraft and would love to visit it in person one day. I like the map at the front of the book that shows you where everything is located and give you a good visual of the town.Emma and Jay both find themselves in a spot in life that they never dreamed of experiencing. Through common circumstances, they find that they have much they can talk about and many instances where they can relate to each other. Who would ever imagine that a pizza-loving hound would be the one playing matchmaker!Shelley Shepard Gray does a wonderful job capturing the reader from the very beginning. I have not read a book by her that I have disliked. She has captured my full attention from the beginning and I find that I have a hard time putting down her books. I do like that her books aren't as many pages because then I can read it as a reward in between doing chores (don't judge me!). By the end of my chore time, I've completed the entire book as a reward for mopping and cleaning. So thank you, Shelley Shepard Gray for giving me something to look forward to and for testing my ability to "just say no" when all I really want to do is read one more chapter before picking up that mop! I'm so glad that there's one more book in this series. I just don't want to say goodbye yet! Oh and the pictures of Pinecraft bring this story to life. Such a wonderful idea to include those._________________I received this book free from Avon Inspire and Litfuse Publicity Group in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heartwarming By Amazon Customer A Wedding at Orange Blossom InnShelley Shephard GrayCustoms are made to be followed and in the Amish way of thinking when a woman becomes a widow she is supposed to remain faithful to her spouse forever. But, what happens when one beagle named Frankie decides to take matters into his own hands, ruins the pizza that another family has ordered and starts a chain of events that will either make you want to put him in the corner, give him tons of treats or just plain smile. What happens when the mother of three young girls meets the father of three boys? Could it be fate or pizza that brought them together? Emma Keim is brokenhearted after losing her husband Sanford. Jay Hilty decided to move to Pinecraft and start an organic farm business. What could they have in common and would they ever be more than friends? As the disastrous lunch turns into chaos you meet Lena, Annie and Mandy her three adorable girls and William, Mark and Ben Jay’s sons. Amazing how no one got angry and everyone took what Frankie did in stride. Ben, the oldest seemed kind, good natured and when he meets Tricia the niece the woman who runs the local inn, things start to sizzle but will they remain within the limits and rules of the Amish way of thinking? As Ben and Tricia get to know each other both families become concerned and her aunt Beverly even voices her opinion about her behavior in public. Sometimes these viewpoints are accepted and other times even Tricia speaks out in her own defense. Knowing that she left home to feel safe, be her own person and getting away from the bullies in her old school, Tricia took on a job at the inn and seems to be thriving.Beverly Overholt is Tricia’s aunt and although she is outspoken she means well. Added in her unusual love/hate relationship with the inn’s owner named Eric who is dealing with selling his home in another state but whom Beverly wishes would return. Can you smell her great cookies, baked pies and delicious desserts, as her main goal is to cook up and bake up storm-keeping guests happy? When Emma and Jay become friends and she decides to bring over food for his family for supper you can feel the bond being formed, the kids or kinner as they say it getting along and it’s so gratifying that they manage to find a common ground right away. But, William is the youngest and Jay feels that he is neglecting his studies and somehow he manages to admit that to Emma who jumps right in with a great solution. However, when her parents and Sanford’s learn about her friendship opinions are stated and Emma needs to reflect on their voices but isn’t she entitled to be happy?Ben and Tricia formed a bond so close and after going on their dates with them, seeing how they feel about each other the author decides to unite them and allows them to become engaged. But, parents are strict and hers are no different and when Kathleen her mother shows up and her father, things take on a different turn. They can demand she return home. They can deny her the right to marry Ben. They can decide to become more open minded or they can not be apart of the wedding as she decided to marry in Pinecraft at the Inn and the decision was hers and Ben’s alone. As they set the date and decide on their future Jay and Emma have their own choices to make. Emma is kind, always trying to help others and make the lives of so many easier but my favorite character is Annie and her interaction with Jay and the incident with the frog is great as I used to hunt for frogs with my nephew when he was just Annie’s age. Family dinners, lunches, outings and finally a real date for Emma and Jay but how will everyone react? Thinking about Sanford and Evelyn his wife they share their pasts, their love for their spouses and their hopes for their future but will it be together? This is a heartwarming story that will make you smile, bring tears of sadness and joy to your heart and teach you much about the Amish ways. I really love that they enjoy my favorite food pizza and that when Frankie does something at Ben and Tricia’s wedding that Jay comes to his defense. Emma at times overreacts and wants everything to be perfect but life doesn’t run or fair that way. So, what will happen between Emma and Jay? Will 6 make an even number plus two and Frankie in one house? Will they decide to take it slow or not at all? Will their be another wedding at the inn or will they just be friends? As Beverly and Eric find their way together at the wedding at least for a little while, Emma and Jay have to decide on their futures and of course what to do with Frankie! A story about new beginnings, new loves, family values, loyalties and feelings of betrayal that need to be overcome. As Tricia and Ben form a lasting love and bond will the rest of the kids feel the same? “ It takes both sunshine and rain to make a rainbow,” an Amish proverb and it definitely will bring sunshine and joy into your life if you read this book and join Emma, Jay, Ben and Tricia on their journey to happiness. The pictures at the end bring the town to life and of course Frankie who made it all happen.

This new one all about the lives of the Amish in Pinecraft and the Orange Blossom Inn in particular is amazing! I've read the others in this series(this is book three) and A Wedding at the Orange Blossom Inn is a charming and funny addition to the series. I loved meeting our two families and learning about their background. I also adore Frankie.Frankie is a beagle with a tendency towards trouble. He has a voracious appetite for pizza and wedding cake(oh yes I said wedding cake). He also is so cute and loveable that no one can be mad at him for long. You're going to love meeting Emma and her three young daughters as well as Jay and his three sons(one grown, one teenage, and one young still). Both are widowed and not looking for love. But love finds them anyway in Pinecraft! Can Emma break free from what her parents and in laws expect of her? Can Jay let himself see it's okay to love again? And who will get married first, Jay or his oldest son? So much romance and fun going on in this book. I literally sat down to read it and then it was all over! Definitely not long enough! I can't wait for the next book to come out!I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not compensated in any other way for this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fiery US government teacher Remi Covington is relentless in her desire to impart the genius of the democratic process to her students. Her so-called “academically challenged” high school seniors sometimes find her enthusiasm more than a little annoying―so, in an effort to teach her a lesson, they execute a brazen, high-tech, social media blitz touting her as the newest candidate in the upcoming US presidential race. Much to everyone’s surprise, Remi plays along with her students’ ruse―and in a nation weary of politics and career politicians, she unexpectedly finds herself the darling of the American public. As the campaign takes on a life of its own, Remi is forced to confront a myriad of long-held social biases and cultural clichés, and realizes she isn’t quite the woman she thought was. Vote for Remi is about a would-be a presidential candidate who, despite being all wrong―the wrong gender, the wrong party, and certainly the wrong social status―discovers that she might be exactly what America needs: someone with a passion for doing what is right.

I Vote for Remi By Barbara Stark-Nemon - author Even in Darkness- a novel I heard the premise of this book a year ago when I met the author at a conference. As a veteran educator and second career writer, I fell in love with Remi before I ever met her. So I was delighted to receive my copy of the finished book and was not disappointed. Vote for Remi is a wonderful romp into the world of “What if?”, a tribute to the underappreciated skill and enthusiasm of emerging “alternative” adults, and a welcome commentary on the politics, presidential and otherwise, of a middle ground apart from extremes. It’s a great story and a fun read!

The kids in her US government class were inspired from a lesson she gave in class about how as long as a person meets the constitutional parameters that ANYONE can technically run for president. Her students post a video about what Remi thinks is wrong with Washington and somehow the video is a social media whirlwind. What started off as somewhat as a joke, becomes something seen by millions of people. Remi becomes an actual contender. However, even though she seems to the support of the everyday people, the media and professional politicians are out to get her.Remi's students become her campaign managers and they set out to change Washington through the presidential run. Remi vows to see the campaign to the end, but it isn't always easy. Her relationships suffer and she has a hard time balancing her personal life with the everything that is demanded of her by running. At one point when she can no longer recognize herself, Remi wonders if all politicians start out with good intentions and then end up losing their way. You feel for Remi as she has to defend things she did when she was a kid or the actions of other people in her life. It had ring of truth from that aspect since we see so many smear campaigns from politicians instead of them focusing on their own platforms. There are tragic things that happen along the way, but it is an interesting read in the sense of seeing how the social media firestorm propels Remi to places she never thought she would be!I received and advanced copy of this book for an honest review.

Exploring the value of social media and a realistic view of politics in America are just a start of the many subjects explored in this well-edited freshman novel. Throw in a touch of romance, intrigue, a realistic look at American teenagers and a whole lot of coffee and VOTE FOR REMI is a winner.

As he embarks on a series of thrilling escapades, Mowgli encounters such unforgettable creatures as the bear Baloo, the graceful black panther Bagheera and Shere Khan, the tiger with the blazing eyes. Other animal stories in The Jungle Books range from the dramatic battle between good and evil in “Rikki-tikki-tav” to the macabre comedy, “The Undertakers.” With The Jungle Books, Rudyard Kipling drew on ancient beast fables, Buddhist philosophy, and memories of his Anglo-Indian childhood to create a rich, symbolic portrait of man and nature, and an eternal classic of childhood. This edition contains both of Kipling’s Jungle Books, as well as “In the Rukh,” the story that introduced readers to Mowgli.Part of Penguin’s beautiful Hardcover Classics series, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high-quality, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design

The Jungle Books (A Penguin Classics Hardcover), by Rudyard Kipling

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2-This retelling opens with Mowgli showcasing his jungle skills as taught to him by Baloo and Bagheera. Vibrant digital vignettes display Mowgli not only surviving but thriving in a wild setting. Moving on to Mowgli's backstory, readers are introduced to villain Shere Khan. Through the tiger's dialogue, readers learn that Mowgli was abandoned in the forest by his parents, and can safely assume that Shere Khan means to harm him-though it is merely evidenced by the way the tiger roars his claims to the child and not explicitly stated in text. Fortunately, Mother and Father Wolf leap to Mowgli's defense and offer him love and protection as adoptive parents. As a young boy, Mowgli is safe and happy in his jungle home, but as he grows, the animals who vowed to protect him age and younger animals rise up to take leadership of the pack. The younger animals are vulnerable to Shere Khan's bad intentions, which puts Mowgli in a position where he must prove himself at a special pack meeting. This retelling is a great beginner version for young listeners as the lush beauty and exciting activities one can enjoy only in the wild are highlighted over the more mature elements of the story, such as abandonment and Shere Khan's plans to kill the child. The dynamic digital cartoon artwork supports this by depicting the jungle animals with large, expressive eyes and soft lines that take the bite out of fearsome features like claws and sharp teeth. VERDICT A solid addition to most library collections.-Samantha Lumetta, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OHα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist Gr. 4^-7. In 18 rich watercolor paintings, Pinkney captures the sheer drama of the eight Mowgli stories and of the well-loved "Rikki-tikki-tavi." A handsome volume for collections of classic tales. Sally Estes

Review ''It would take too long to enumerate even half of the marvelous touches by which the creatures miscalled dumb are made to live for us by Rudyard Kipling . . . The saddest words of this volume are those with which he closes, 'And this is the last of the Mowgli stories!' '' --Vogue

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

We have the Disney books and movies at home but since he is an avid reader and I love Rudyard Kipling I thought it was time to find him the real deal and this book is it. I like everything about it, the font type, the illustrations, and the writing is, well... Rudyard Kipling. Beautiful, rich, provocative language that unleashes a child's imagination. My son and I devoured it in a few nights and after we were done it led to a really deep discussion on the differences with the Disney's version. It was a welcomed reminder that we can understimate both our children's capacity to digest the classics and their appeal to them.

DRIZZT RETURNS TO THE UNDERDARK! “After a quarter of a century, R.A. Salvatore just keeps getting better and better, and The Companions is another masterful leap forward for one of the greatest fantasy epics of all time.”—Philip Athans, best-selling author of Annihilation and Writing Monsters R.A. SalvatoreArchmage The pall that had descended over the North is gone, and a new day has dawned on a victorious Mithral Hall, but no matter how bright things seem on the surface, Drizzt and his companions know that what lurks just under their feet remains steeped in evil and charged with unimaginable power. The dark elves of Menzoberranzan, including the powerful Archmage Gromph, aren’t done with Drizzt yet. And consumed by their own power struggles, feeling backed into a corner, the drow may just be desperate enough to call on demonic forces from the deepest reaches of the Abyss, and unleash a disaster even the Underdark could never have prepared for. Archmage has everything Drizzt’s fans crave: action, adventure, characters that resonate with equal measures of warrior spirit and deep compassion, and no shortage of wicked dark elves!

Do not buy this book at this price!!! This is ridiculous. Hopefully with these recent negative reviews I see the overall rating will go down and so will sales and RA Salvatore and the publisher will hopefully take note. I saw some posts referring to Amazon as the culprit, but the price is the same at other places so I believe the publisher is at fault. Please do not buy any format for this book while the kindle version is $27. $7-10 is more than reasonable for a fantasy book, especially one with no printing costs. There are always other means to get books... I pay because I support the authors and this is like a slap in the face.

Salvatore for over 20 years! The last few books have just been amazing. I approached this latest novel with trepidation. I have read all of the Forgotten Realms novels that I know of, and Gromph has been my favorite. Call me nostalgic, but he always reminded me a little of Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance. Anyway, The Archmage was a great book. Gromph has been a character in the Drizzt books, Daughter of the Drow trilogy by Elaine Cunningham(Liriel Baenre is his daughter!) and he could almost be considered the main character in War of the Spider Queen 6 part set. His battle with the Drowliche is truly epic! Along with Drizzt, Jarlaxle, and all the usual characters, we met a few new and interesting people as well. Salvatore brought some serious intrigue to the realms as a whole. This novel covers a lot of ground, and gets wheels turning for what is shaping up to be the best series in the realms. My favorite have been The Brotherhood of the Griffon, Return of the Archwizards, and The Last Mythal to name a few. I like the epic scope, and the huge focus on magic. Salvatore was missing that for so long. I won't spoil it, but the though of Gromph and what the future might hold makes me really really want to read the next book. April 2016! I put Ed Greenwoods Spellstorm on hold to read this, and I couldn't stop. Why can't we see more books like this published? Will it help if I buy 2 copies of each? 5? I miss the days of old where we had a handful of FR novels every month, now we are getting that amount in a year. Enjoy it!

By efpurvis For me, Drizzt is fast becoming far less interesting than the supporting cast. His journal entries to start new sections of the books epitomize my feelings on his character development; between musings about possible 'good goblin kin' and Cattie-brie's "kill em all" ideology handed straight down from Mielikki I'm starting to wonder why he hasn't put forth some thought of taking an expedition to Menzoberranzan and putting his birthplace to the torch. Has it never dawned on him or his friends that the Drow will keep coming for him/them forevermore? Two ideas spur this on for me (w/o trying to be spoilery) 1. an orc wonders at regaining the acceptance/tolerance of the silver marches and 2. a nominal/cannon fodder race of the underdark shows some actual ingenuity. Our main character is front and center for both of these events. This isn't to say I don't still enjoy Mr. Salvatore's books, contraire. At this point, and for this book, Gromph and Jarlaxle are the scene stealing characters. I sincerely hope that the focus shifts from the 'companions of the hall' to the 'brothers grim' in future volumes.Or hell, maybe we'll finely get that Zaknafein back story and learn that he was a Baenre cousin.....

How refreshing to find a literate tale with a lively pace, intelligent plotting, and an engaging heroine who just happens to be a witch. Author Kevin Symmons has recreated the post WWII era and an ageless Wiccan, with a deft touch that both enlivens and educates the reader. The romance is sweet( and unconsummated), but intense emotion still fuels a love story older than time. The twists and turns in the plot kept me glued to my IPAD, as I tried to outguess the wily villains who populate RITE OF PASSAGE.A highly recommended novel for those who like high stakes, strong characters, and a breakneck race to save the world. Let's hope Courtney and Robbie have many more adventures!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A great summer read By Marcia Szymanski If you are looking for a great summer read, I recommend you get a copy of Rite of Passage. The story, set in Maine a few years after World War II, is a love story but it is so much more. The story weaves in the parallel world of witches and their mysterious quest, which is a unique twist on what one usually imagines when thinking of witches and the paranormal. Well researched and written, once you read the first few pages, you will want to keep turning them and you won't be disappointed. Enjoy the summer and a good story!

It's an easy, breezy read that is about love gone right. The post-World War II era provides the setting for an intense romance between Courtney and Robert. But, it turns out that she's a witch. No,no, not the Elizabeth Montgomery type. This is a much more believable type of witchcraft. No broomsticks or twitching noses or pointed hats. This woman works with forces that can make your hair stand on end. Makes me wonder if I didn't meet her once (or twice) before in my life. Go read it.

Each disorder is classified by description, risk factors if applicable, s/s, diagnostic tests, treatment and follow up. Practice pearls boxes are great. I use this to study for my FNP classes. It's a smaller book than I expected, about 9 inches tall by 6 inches or so and spiral bound.

I use this in daily practice and I have been in practice for about 4 years, it almost flow like a SOAP note, signs symptoms HPI, what to look for and what assessment and plan is. A lot of plays are bad. And one bad play, it seems, can turn us off theater for good. So, what can we learn from the bad play? Jordan Tannahill, after talking to theater heavy-hitters from Australia to Berlin, offers a roadmap for a renewed theater, one that is less insular, less insulting, with better infrastructure. In reconsidering dramaturgy, programming strategies, and alternative models for producing, he aims to turn theater from an obligation to a destination.

Jordan Tannahill is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. His production of Sheila Heti's All Our Happy Days Are Stupid will be performed in New York in 2015.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not a completely new point of view, but an interesting book promoting avant garde theatre and new intrepretations of old shows By H. Williams I’m the perfect audience for Jordan Tannahill’s book "Theatre of the Unimpressed." I go to a play or live performance every couple of months as a special treat. Lately I've been leaving the theatre thinking, “I guess I’m glad I saw that award winner so that I know what people are taking about” or “I’m not sure what all the buzz is about.” Few shows stick with me for a long time.Tannahill is an award-winning playwright and theatre director from Toronto. He helps run a miniscule alternative art space in Toronto. He practices what he preaches, so he’s the perfect person to criticize the movie-star-filled blockbusters and hollow Broadway spectaculars that make up so much of today’s popular theatre-going experience. This slim volume is overflowing with ideas and "angry young gay man" criticism of current theatre practice. Tannahill begins by criticizing the popular play "Driving Miss Daisy." Every regional theatre has performed it, but Tannahill compares it to a bland orgy that he once organized. All the right components are in place but it winds up being a boring slough that never takes off.One of Tannahill’s central critiques revolves around the “well-made play.” Adopted in the early nineteenth century, this concept describes a play in which the crucial part of the story has taken place before the onstage action and the climax comes late in the play to explain the drama that just appeared on the stage. (Oscar Wilde’s "The Importance of Being Earnest," Tennessee Williams’s "Suddenly Last Summer," and Tracy Letts’s "August: Osage Country" present textbook examples of this formula, offering speeches that disclose crucial information only at the very end of the play.) Tannahill argues that this kind of stage realism does not exploit the possibilities that live theatre offers. One of Tannahill's major arguments centers on the lack of risk and the avoidance of failure in most contemporary fare. He summarizes Jack Halberstam’s recent book "The Queer Art of Failure," which offers failure as a form of resistance to capitalism and heteronormity, where queerness can exist outside society’s view of “success.” He also praises Samuel Beckett’s striking stage images and theatrical situations that trade in poetic logic rather than naturalism.Between these two major critiques, Tannahill points out a series of other issues that limit new productions: Dramaturges try to turn new plays into something that the playwright didn’t intend. Companies repeatedly perform “museum theatre” in fixed ways, when updated staging or creative casting could re-invigorate an old chestnut. Stage companies need to fill large single-use commercial spaces with subscription theatre attendees. As solutions, Tannahill points out the advantages that live theatre offers over filmed presentations, and the unexpected possibilities of web-based performance. He offers examples of the authentic “life” that a spontaneous actor can bring to a performance.Tannahill offers plenty of examples of successful shows that he’s directed or seen. These are probably the best parts of the book. He generally avoids academic terms and assumes that readers are not theatre queens who will automatically be familiar with every play and playwright he mentions. But "Theatre of the Unimpressed" is for thinking theatre supporters, not casual matinee goers.Tannahill believes that one bad experience can turn off a person from the theatre forever. That hasn’t happened to me yet, but I’m now going to make an effort to see more truly live theatre that exploits the possibilities of a live performance and that introduces some risk into my theatre routine. For the first time in quite a while, I’m looking forward to going to the theatre again.

An insightful, passionately argued treatise By Greg Trefry A very insightful book full of excellent examples drawn from a load of theater viewing, reading and conversations with smart theater artists. His argument might have benefited from some examples of work drawn further afield from theater and performance.None of the ideas advanced here are super provocative, but that's probably a good thing: he's not beating a drum to his own tune, rather trying to rally people behind an idea which seems very much in motion.

It's incredibly refreshing as a practitioner to read theatrical theory that is up to speed with out times and societies. I've been highly recommending this to everyone in the field.

For years the Skukuza community had been clinging to the belief that their Utopia could not possibly be the last bastion of civilisation on the African continent. Now there was hope, in the form of a vapour trail in the morning sky. However, the hope soon turned to despair as a new threat became apparent. Man was the apex predator, the undisputed king of all mammals. But now, over the arid plains and through the desolate jungles of Africa, extinction was stalking not only mankind, but all things living. Man was about to pay the ultimate price for years of benevolence and humanitarian aid, which had run out decades ago… There is no circumventing the basic laws of nature – a fact that was about to become abundantly clear. ‘The first ones who dared to cross were compelled to do so by pressure from the masses behind. None of them made it. From the flotsam rose a destructive force that had existed only in their genetic memory for generations. The folklore and superstitions of their ancestors had suddenly come to life. The destruction was complete and the retreat chaos.’

About the Author Leon Mare was born in South Africa and lived close to the Kruger National Park for most of his life. He was involved in extensive wildlife research, and spent all of his free time in the African wilderness. Dr. Mare has an intimate knowledge of the wilder side of Africa, which is reflected in most of his work. He has written several TV drama series, and produced a TV documentary on the indiscriminate killing of marlin during billfish competitions on the east coast of Africa. This resulted in a major paradigm shift to tagging and releasing these fish instead. He has published seven books on Amazon Kindle, the latest being book five in the Sam Jenkins Trilogy series. In 2013 Leon and his wife Monica returned to South Africa after ten years in the UK. They settled in the tiny village of Yzerfontein on the Cape West Coast, where he spends his days writing, fishing and bundu bashing with his best friend Mother Nature.

The cover and the blurb hooked me, but I was not quite sure what to expect. What a pleasant surprise! African nature, wildlife, action, a tricky love triangle, all expertly woven together against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic continent teetering on the edge of the abyss. The story is unique and transcends the limitations of genres. I have never read anything remotely like it. Very highly recommended.

It is a gripping story full of unexpected twists and turns. Action, adventure, forbidden love and, above all, the fight for survival. Highly recommended.
