THE GREATEST WESTERN WRITERS OF THE 21ST CENTURYFrom the greatest western storytellers of our time comes a new twist on the legend of notorious outlaw Jesse James—who just might not have died on that fateful April 3, 1882.1942—Granbury, Texas. A ninety-five-year-old man walks into a recruiting office with the crazy idea to enlist—and an even crazier story. He claims to be the one and only Jesse James, the infamous bank robber allegedly shot by Robert Ford sixty years earlier. Using another man’s corpse to collect the reward, Ford allowed James to slip away and start a new life. Changing his name to Dalton, Jesse worked as a cattle broker in Fort Worth and fathered a pair of twins named Bill and Frank. But when one of the boys turns out to be a chip off the old block—a young outlaw in the making—Jesse has no choice but to school the lad in the fine art of bank robbing so he doesn’t get his fool head blown off. Problem is, once Jesse’s son gets a taste of the outlaw life, he decides it isn’t for him after all. Father Jesse, on the other hand, misses it…So begins the wildest story the West has never known, proving that some legends are bigger than life—and a lot harder to kill…

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A really fun, well written page turner. By Culz Paranormal I was recommended this book by Scott as he knows I read anything about Jesse James or Robert Ford, saying my family is related to both. Usually not a huge fan of westerns but after reading this book I want more! Not only is it a great Jesse James book, but also a great western novel. I really enjoyed the read, the parts over the Northfield raid, and James "death" are sorta glossed over but we already know so much about those events. After that tho the author takes care to put great detail and a lot of research into a story that makes you think did James really fake his death. Numerous people have come forward saying they are James and this focuses on one of the most well known J Frank Dalton, it also uses real events, the Denver mint robbery, San Fran earthquake 1906, Worlds Fair, World War One. Overall Great book! Highly recommend it, overall rating 8.4/10.0

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written page turner By Jerry R. Blackerby There used to be several people who claimed or were thought to have been Jesse James, who was not actually shot by Bob Ford. I’m old enough I remember some of the cases. One person is buried in Granbury, Texas with the name Jesse Woodson James on his tombstone. This is a story about a person who may have been the real Jesse James and lived through the times of WWII under another identity. He tells his story to the writer who wrote under the name of Max Brand. Who knows, it could be true. Loved the story, well written, a page turner.

When I would pick it up to read, it was hard to put down. I thought it was pretty suspenseful.Made me start to think that possibly Jesse James did live into the 1940's.

Filled with so much juicy drama and suspenseful twists! I enjoyed every minute of it and had to keep reading because I just HAD to know what was going to happen next. I wish this novel never ended! It definitely stirs up a lot of emotions and makes me feel just a little bit more alive, and sexier, and devious - (the characters just rub off on you;) I never got so involved in a book before! I would recommend this book to everyone! You are guaranteed an adventure!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Still... By L. Romich Still Thicker Than Water by Takerra Allen is the highly anticipated sequel to Thicker Than Water. Last time we saw Tatum she was mourning the loss of her brother and raising his two daughters on her own and missing the love of her life, Respect. This time she is wondering what if. What if she would have left when he fled the states? Should she, could she go after him and try to find him now? What will/could happen if she does?Sasha is now married to Mike, a doctor, who practically worships the ground Sasha walks on. Unfortunately, Sasha still has feelings for Chauncey, although he is locked behind bars. Little does Sasha know Chauncey is about to get out and when he does he is coming to reclaim his family. The question is what will Sasha do? Not to mention has Chauncey changed? What does he plan to do with his life once he is released? Will he go back to his old ways?Still Thicker Than Water by Takerra Allen was a fast-paced, rollercoaster of a ride, drama-filled novel. It was a very good read! My only complaint is that there were a few things that just seemed a little too convenient and slightly unbelievable. All-in-all, Ms. Allen does an excellent job in keeping the reader engrossed from the very first page. I definitely recommend both books to readers of urban fiction! This book was provided by the author for review purposes.Reviewed by LeonaAPOOO BookClub

I just could not put it down. The story starts off 2 years later buts picks ups exactly where it left off. Sasha is now living in Atlanta with her husband Mike who is now a doctor and her daughter that she shares with her ex Chauncey. Since Chauncey is now behind bars for what he did to Nelly, it’s much easier for Sasha to go on with her fairytale love story and build a life with Mike who is more of a fit for her lifestyle than her ex was. The only issue is that Mike is not the real thing and could never hold a candle to the hold that Chauncey still has on Sasha’s heart. As much as she tries to fight those feelings that she still has for Chauncey, he finds ways to creep back into her mind and heart to remind her of the love that they once shared. After the death of her brother Chris, Tatum continues to raise his two daughters. As each days passes she can’t help but to think of Respect and what they could have been if she had followed him to Jamaica. But that all changed after she Sasha and Jade ran into Respect on a trip to Jamaica. After the two reunited with one another they set out to live their lives happily ever after, but not without a minor issue getting in their way named Trinity that would be a little harder to get rid of than the two would have liked.Jade is Sasha’s former friend from Atlanta who she linked up with once she returned with Mike, and when I say she is a straight boss, that’s putting it lightly. Everything about her seems so perfect, her beauty, her money and her friendship but those are the ones you have to watch because everyone always has a hidden agenda. Jade is on a mission for money power and respect and will do just about anything to gain all three. And just when we thought Nelly was gone she pops back up being just as unpredictable as she was in the last book. But can she too change mend those friendships that she broke?Book 2 most definitely lived up to my expectations and delivered everything I imagined and some. I cannot wait to get my hands on the third installment.

Beautiful writing, suspenseful By PJ, Queensland The first half of the book is narrated by Pilgrim, an American lady whose husband works for the International Red Cross. They are living in Switzerland when her marriage comes unexpectedly to an end. Whilst still reeling from this, she is involved in a local tragedy. To escape the nasty repercussions of this, she escapes to the Africa hoping to lose herself in the remoteness. She feels she is never safe—from humans nor from spirits. She befriends a doctor who feels frustrated that she has no medicines, a policeman who works alone in a lawless society, an alcoholic with his own need for redemption, and a grieving lesbian who has come to save AIDS orphans. Her concise, descriptive writing paints a vivid picture of people, their activities and the surroundings. There is an air of uncertainty and a sense of doom which hangs over the story.I wasn’t sure if I had understood the ending as it was meant to be.

The Stars Betrayed It is the twenty sixth century and mankind has suffered under the tyrannical rule of the ubers for over a century. Four fifths of humanity were wiped out in the uprising by homo superior. Those humans who survived were turned into slaves in all but name. They were luckier than some. After conquering the Earth the ubers turned their greedy eyes to space and started a war with the Alliance. A war which has lasted for decades and cost countless billions of lives as world after world has been overrun. Those aliens captured have been enslaved, while the humans have been forced into the unwilling role of overseers. In the middle of this is Manx. An engineer on board a starship and a human who has defied the ubers genetic purity laws and fallen in love with an alien woman. A man who will be betrayed by her as the Alliance deals a devastating counter attack to the Terran Empire. That's war. Betrayal is a strategy as old as time and it lies at the heart of every war including this one. And uncovering that secret history of betrayals may be the key to ending the power of the ubers. But it will take an engineer's mind to do that. It will take Manx. Can a man betrayed learn to find trust again? In the woman he loved? In the enemies of his people? Or will the war never end?

The Stars Betrayed, by Greg Curtis

About the Author Greg Curtis is the name of a hopelessly boring middle class sci fi junkie. He was born in New Zealand, land of the long white cloud and small flightless birds. He grew up in the city of Wellington, renown for its high winds and the almost magical ability of rain and sleet to be lifted off the street and blasted into one's face. After eighteen years of suffering the cold and wet, he was finally blown away in a particularly bad storm to settle far away as a student at Massey and then Otago Universities for more years then most would ever admit to. Then finally when the universities pronounced him done he became an overqualified and underpaid worker in the health sector - aren't we all! Greg has lived in the city of Rotorua, one of the very few places in the world where people have actually chosen to reside beside active geysers and breath air that reeks of sulphur, for the past seventeen years. He works by day for his daily bread by speaking to people about their various diarrhoeal illnesses. While at night he toils away on his books. When not engaged in his loves of reading and writing science fiction and fantasy, drinking strong black coffee (some call it tar), and consuming copious amounts of chocolate (dark naturally), he lives a quiet life of contemplation as the high priest to his two cats. His duties include worshipping them with regular gifts of food, the occasional grooming and providing them with a warm dry place to sleep. They in turn look down upon him with typical feline disdain, but occasionally deign to bring him gifts of headless vermin - as a warning. In a desperate bid to understand the meaning of his life, he has recently started studying philosophy, particularly metaphysics, and come to a startling conclusion. God must be a cat! Cheers and be good or don't get caught. Greg.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I did not enjoy this book By ken Somehow, I did not enjoy this book... just like I have not enjoyed the last few of Mr. Curtis's novels. His newer books lack the touch that some of his earlier ones like Dragon had. I can't really explain it, but reading the newer books has been more of a chore than fun, and I've returned quite a few of them. If you're looking for something like Dragon in this novel, don't waste your time. The only commonality is that it's set in space.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Main Character is the Main Problem By Abish I was getting into this story (80% in one day, now I'm not sure if I'll finish it or not), but this book shares the same flaws as a number of this author's other works which I've read and they really derail my ability to identify with the main character. Possible spoilers: the main character is too good of a guy; too ready to forgive his lover and everyone else who betrays him, too willing to help people who treat him and his people like garbage, and too able to shake off crippling mental illness in order to do so. When the character just up and started sleeping with his former lover again after shaking off the PTSD that had him laying around waiting to die it was simply too much for my suspension of disbelief. The dark thoughts of depression, of PTSD, make forgiveness for serious hurt a matter of years - even if the betrayer had their own justifications for what they did - and that sort of shattered trust is not so easily rebuilt. Not so quickly as this.My advice to the author would be to not try to cram a happy ending in where it doesn't fit - sure, it would be sad if the book ended and Manx was still full of anger and bitterness towards Pawnji, was still hurtfully keeping her away, but it would be the human thing to do. Even then it needn't be entirely depressing, you can always make it obvious that Pawnji isn't giving up and that one day, perhaps, Manx will begin to trust again.EDIT: I did finish the book, dropping down to 1 star as the MC only got more and more cringe-worthy. Joining the Alliance to help and do good after they stripped humanity of all their ships/power, even though the Alliance were responsible for the creation of the ubers, not humanity? After spending so much of the book resisting their often bloodthirsty efforts to kill humans?

Though heartbreaking, it was a love story I wanted to see to its end and I'm glad I stuck around for it. There's retribution, forgiveness and a hint at life after death. I look forward to more writings from the author: Christy Aldridge.

Evil now has a face as Police Lieutenant Alan Crane and his supernatural counterpart, Michael Simmons, return in the third and final installment of The Light Bringer Trilogy.  Together, Crane and Simmons slowly learn of the existence of the one who represents the darkness here on earth.  As they continue to track their adversary they begin to uncover his long reign of terror, which courses through history and sets forth a plan to poison the hearts and souls of mankind in preparation for the final battle between good and evil.  Who will win?  Find out in The Risen.

In the first book of this award-winning series, Lt. Crane came face to face with the mystery of life and death as sixteen people would die on his watch. Although tragic and untimely death is no stranger to the jaded ex-Marine, his new-found supernatural ability to lead people to their spiritual fates is a whole new experience. In the second book, The Fallen, Lt. Crane's sensational journey continues as he searches for answers that will unlock the mystery of the darkness that is infiltrating the world of the living. But, we live in a time of increasing darkness―unending war, economic strife, and untimely death―and when bad things happen to good people, we often ask "Why?" This fascinating trilogy will engage every imagination and spirit while it answers this most provocative question.

Chapter 1

Police lieutenant Alan Crane sat back in his seat and closed his eyes as he felt the plane lifting off the ground. He hated to fly. A horrible fear of heights had always plagued him, and the sensation of freefall, however slight, made him anxious. After a moment or two, when the aircraft had leveled out, he opened his eyes. His mind wandered back to the strange phone call he had received yesterday, from Commander Tong Montri, an old friend he'd met in the FBI National Academy who worked for the Royal Thai Police in one of its provincial divisions.

It had been many years since Alan had spoken to him, and Tong's voice was now serious with concern as he said, in thickly accented English, 'Alan, I have a most disturbing case that I need your help on. I can't relay too much over the phone, but I've cleared it with your department to have you come immediately.'

'Can you tell me anything?' asked Alan.

'We've had a mass suicide, similar to the one you recently worked on. I fear that they may be related, but that's all I can say over the phone. I'll see you when you get here.'

Alan recalled the incident that Tong had referred to. As part of the Major Case Squad, he was often sent to investigate high-profile events. This particular case involved a small church where all eighty members of the congregation had been found dead. The minister, Reverend Dean Clampson, was missing, although he was supposed to conduct the service that day. The toxicology reports indicated that everyone had ingested some type of toxin, which was discovered in the wine used for Sunday services.

Alan was assigned as the lead investigator, and he quickly discovered that it was not a mass suicide. He spoke to those who had died, once they had passed on to the next realm―an ability and assignment he'd been given years ago by a mysterious man named Michael Simmons, who posed as a federal agent. Simmons had introduced Alan to the world beyond life on Earth and had taught him how to walk the souls of those who had passed from that life through the long hallways that eventually led to the Realm of Light, as Simmons called it.

Alan had walked all eighty members of the congregation to their final resting place―or Heaven, as Alan liked to call it. The deceased members of the church told him that they had not taken their own lives by ingesting poison but had simply participated as usual in the regular Sunday church service―which included partaking of the Sunday wine. Alan was still leaning toward the theory that Reverend Clampson had murdered them all and then subsequently been led to the Darkness by someone else. His inability to find the entire truth was troubling to him, but now, as he contemplated the similar incident in Thailand, he was becoming more convinced that those dedicated to the Darkness might be involved.

The plane lurched, and the turbulence brought Alan back to the present. His chest tightened with fear for a brief moment, then his fear dissipated. He felt the aircraft bank to the right and descend, and he wondered what was going on. They had been flying for only five minutes, yet it seemed as if they were making an approach to land. Alan glanced out the window and noticed the clouds rush by, then disappear above him. He glanced downward and could see the outline of a huge city below. The captain's voice came over the intercom, 'We're beginning our final approach at Bangkok International Airport. Please fasten your seat belts and place your trays in the upright position as we prepare to land.'

Alan was startled, but as he looked around at the other passengers, he saw that they seemed undisturbed about the five-minute flight from the United States to Thailand. The plane touched down, and Alan grabbed his bag from the overhead compartment. As he made his way off the plane, he passed by the cockpit, and his gaze focused on the captain, who was standing near the doorway and staring at him with a huge smile on his face. At that moment Alan realized why the flight had taken only five minutes: he was looking at the familiar face of Michael Simmons.

Chapter 2

Alan walked from the tunnel that led off the plane and looked around at the droves of people scrambling to make their way through the crowded airport. A hand reached out and touched him on the shoulder, and he turned to see Michael Simmons, who was now wearing his typical dark-colored suit rather than the captain's uniform he had been sporting just minutes ago.

'I'd ask you how you changed so fast,' Alan commented, 'but then again, perhaps I don't want to know. So are you with the airline or the FBI right now?'

Michael smiled. 'You know I'm with neither.'

'I mean,' Alan lowered his voice to a whisper, 'how shall I introduce you―as Captain Simmons or Special Agent Simmons?'

'Ah, Special Agent Simmons will do. So how is your new apprentice?' Simmons asked.

'You mean Curtis?' Alan clarified. Curtis Norman was a new police officer with the Riverston Police Department, Alan's agency. Curtis was fresh out of the academy, but Simmons and Alan had known him before his law enforcement endeavors because Curtis had been captured by the Darkness only one year ago. Both had rescued Curtis and were now training him to follow in their footsteps and lead those who pass on to the world beyond the living.

'Yes, Curtis,' Simmons replied. 'I always liked that young man. He has good values.'

Alan nodded in agreement. 'He's doing well, and I finally allowed him to conduct his first walk alone. It was a simple case, an elderly woman who had been widowed years before. She led a life of charity and devotion, and her walk to the Light must have been quick and unhindered by obstacles. Curtis will call me if anything dramatic happens back home.'

'That's great,' Simmons stated.

A sense of pride filled Alan's mind as he thought of young Curtis and how fast he was progressing to taking his position as a Light Bringer. As his thoughts turned back to the matter at hand, his expression changed, causing his mouth to droop in a frown. 'You know about the eighty people I walked to the Light?' he asked. 'The ones who were poisoned?'

'Yes,' replied Simmons as his brow furrowed in concern. 'Very disturbing.'

'Then you also know that they told me they hadn't committed suicide,' Alan continued. 'In addition, I couldn't locate the minister of the church, Reverend Clampson. I'm guessing he murdered the others and was led to the Darkness. But why would he kill all those people?'

Simmons shook his head. 'Do you know anything else about Clampson?'

'According to those who had passed on, he was a wonderful man. None of them suspect that he had anything to do with it, but still, if he hadn't, he'd most likely be dead like the others, and I would have walked him to the Light.'

Alan looked over at Simmons, wanting confirmation of this theory. The two had stopped walking, and Simmons was deep in thought. After a moment, Alan prodded him for his opinion once more. 'That is correct, isn't it? If Clampson died and I didn't lead him to the Light, then the probability is that someone led him to the Darkness.'

Simmons nodded his head slowly. 'That has always been how it was; however, things haven't been following the same rules that I've always known.'

'What do you mean?'

'Recently there have been some rare occasions when significantly good people have died and disappeared. They were destined to be walked into the Light, but they weren't.'

A surge of curiosity mixed with fear welled up in Alan's gut. 'How?'

'I don't know.'

Alan drew a deep breath, then hoisted the strap of his laptop bag over his shoulder to give his hand a rest. 'You know I'm here to meet an old friend of mine from the FBI National Academy. He has a similar incident involving what appears to be a mass suicide.'

Simmons nodded as if he already knew this. 'Yes, I'm trying to follow these cases. Strange things are happening ever since the Darkness has reclaimed its leaders and the Sistratos has started.'

The Darkness reclaiming its leaders, Alan thought, and he knew what Simmons was referring to. Just last year, both of them had witnessed a massive jailbreak of sorts, in which those from the Darkness had freed many of the once-captured fallen angels, as Alan called them. Alan could recall the massive vaultlike prison where millions of them were kept in tiny jars and containers, since they were reduced to mere dust while residing in the Realm of Light. He also remembered how those from his world who were dedicated to the Darkness had flung the containers into a dark void that had appeared in the prison, thus freeing the Fallen.

'What has started?' Alan finally said as he tried to push the images of the jailbreak out of his mind.

'The Sistratos,' replied Simmons. 'It means the 'Binding' in the divine language.'

Alan knew from his many walks through the hallways that the divine language was spoken in the world beyond life on Earth. It was universal, and everyone could understand one another. 'I'm not familiar with the Binding.'

Simmons lowered his voice to ensure that the many people around them at the airport weren't listening. 'It's an event in which the two worlds are bound in a simultaneous battle.'

'The two worlds?' Alan whispered back, looking utterly confused.

'Yes, the world of the living and the realms beyond life.'

Alan was about to continue this conversation when he saw a tall, dark-skinned Asian man approach him and say, with a heavy accent, 'Alan, so good to see you.'

Alan smiled at Tong, who hugged him―obviously a more accepted greeting between men here than in the United States. 'How are you, Tong?'

'Not bad. Who is your friend?'

'Special Agent Michael Simmons with the FBI,' Simmons answered before Alan could, extending his hand.

'Glad you are both here. We have much to talk about,' said Tong. The corners of his mouth drooped, and Alan could tell he was troubled.

'Things have been rough back home for us, too,' offered Alan.

'It is difficult times we live in,' agreed Tong. 'Difficult times indeed.'

It pulls together elements from previous books, but this is also a good "stand-alone" book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes good fiction

By Daniel Clark Purcell A real page turner, this thought-provoking novel is a modern, urban tale of 5 friends who must face the pain of loss, of unexpected love, and of forces beyond their control. Michael Conkey develops his characters with razor sharp precision, better than any author I have read in recent years. He takes the time to make the reader fall in love with everyone in the book first, drawing you deep into their hometown life and what they all are really about before the plot even comes into play. This may frustrate some readers who demand plot up front. But for those who think outside of the box, this novel will play cat and mouse with your brain, challenging your assumptions at every page turn. HEAVEN'S FEATHERS will make you laugh, gasp, and will hypnotize you with surprising moments of unmatched beauty that your imagination could never see on its own.

First of all I have to say that I really enjoyed this book By Agata I won this book in a giveaway on goodreads in exchange for an honest review.First of all I have to say that I really enjoyed this book.I'd describe the book "Aren't We Sisters" as mainly an adult, historical fiction book. This book is written in mainly two perspectives (Norah and Lettie) but still there are a couple other characters who we get to know. One is Rae, a movie-star, who has a "little problem" and that's why she moves out to Silkhampton into an isolated house. There she wants Lettie, a nursse, to take care of her "problem"...The story is a great depiction of the society and it's taboos after WWI which are relevant to this day.A huge issue the book deals with is the sovereignity of the women. Women who couldn't chose if they wanted children or not. Women who oftentimes died while in/after labour.Abusive men who could do what they wanted.Even though I had a hard time getting into the story and had to restart a few times I liked the description of the places and situations; The characters are very credible and the whole story could have happened in real life.My favorite part of the book was the vivid description of the characters emotions and thoughts. The emotions made the characters seem credible and honest.I especially felt Rae's pain and concerns giving away her baby. Even though she intends to adopt her child in the future it's still a risk because she might never get her child back.Overall I recommend this book for adults who like historical fiction though I think a lot of the motives and issues in this book are easier for women to relate to.

Oklahoma ranch hand Tyler Jenkins is too young, too sexy, and too damn wild to be tied down by any single woman for more than a few steamy hours. Widowed rancher Janie Smithwick is too busy paying off her debts to play rodeo with a reckless young cowboy like Tyler-no matter how hot he gets her. As a rule, Janie should be dating a man her own age, like her handsome neighbor Rohn-not the twenty-four-year old ranch hand he employs. But once Tyler gets Janie alone-held tight in his arms, pressed against his hard-muscled body, burning with desire-the widow realizes that some rules, like broncos, are meant to be broken. Contains mature themes.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Flirty and sexy it packed an emotional punch By DiDi GPBR A spin off of Cat Johnson’s wildly successful Oklahoma Nights series, her Midnight Cowboys series is proving once again why readers love this author’s work. Never one to shy away from any type of relationship possible in Midnight Ride Ms. Johnson offers up an older heroine with a much younger hero. While this book was flirty and sexy it packed an emotional punch with characters both trying to figure out where life will take them next and if they can make that journey together.Meeting under comical and very unusual circumstances I was struck by the immediate attraction between 24 year old Tyler Jenkins and 36 year old widowed Janie Smithwick. What I absolutely loved was how quickly Tyler found himself not only attracted to Janie but enjoying her company before they even get physical and while I’ll admit at times I questioned what seemed like his crazy need to help her out but I finally realized that’s just the way Tyler lives his life even if most people don’t see him that way. I liked Tyler a lot and for his age he seemed to have a good head on his shoulders, he was responsible, loyal and very, very determined but I also saw vulnerability in him; the fact he never felt like he was quite good enough and that he may never live down some of his earlier transgressions. Janie had some issues; some due to being a widow for only a year at her age, some due to having no family left in her life, and a lot due to their age difference. There is no doubt she enjoyed the not so subtle flirting from Tyler or the fact that she very much liked the way he looked and his charming personality but the age thing really, really got to her and while I understood that it really was like a very heavy blanket over the whole story. I hated that she made Tyler think she didn’t want to be seen with him because of his reputation and that she really refused to talk to him about everything that was going on in her head. For his age he was pretty intuitive but her actions and words affected him way more than she seemed to be away of most of the time.I liked these two together despite the age difference and I thought they both filled a need in each other that was missing in their lives. I would have loved to see them have a few more heart to heart talks about life, love, and the future because they never really seemed to discuss anything about them as a couple even though they did share things about their past. I wanted to know what their thoughts were on marriage and children, how she felt about his rodeo career, if he was going to keep his job or come to work at her place full time and more than that I really, really wanted to see his family’s reaction to him not only falling in love but falling for someone quite a bit older than him. (I know I’m a nosy demanding witch, I just can’t help it.) I can only dream that we’ll see these two again in the upcoming books in this series and perhaps some of my curiosity will be satisfied.A hot younger man, an older woman, lots of scorching sex and a bit of conflict all added up to another wonderful love story from author Cat Johnson and the beginning of what looks to be a fine series!Review copy provided for an honest review.

This younger man/older woman romance featuring Tyler Jenkins (from the Oklahoma Nights series) is a very sweet and deliciously sensual novel that old and new fans of Ms. Johnson are going to LOVE.Twenty four year old Tyler Jenkins reminds me of a puppy: exuberant, energetic and eager to please. Tyler is a bit untamed and a little wild, but if you look beneath the playful and flirtatious exterior, you’ll find a loyal, hardworking man with a heart of gold. He is confident, charming and good natured, but when Tyler wants something, he goes after it wholeheartedly. And when it comes to Janie Smithwick, Tyler refuses to let a little thing like a twelve year age difference come between him and the woman that he is ready to settle down with.It is a good thing that Tyler is persistent, because getting past Janie’s defenses is not for the faint of heart. She never expected to be a widow at such a young age, and she certainly never expected to be lusting after the hot, young cowboy from a neighboring ranch. Janie cannot understand why he would be interested in her but she soon discovers Tyler is pretty hard to resist when he wants something. She throws caution to the wind and begins what she thinks is a casual fling, but much to her shock, Tyler wants a real relationship with her.Despite their mutual attraction, Tyler and Janie’s relationship begins with an easygoing friendship. Tyler respects Janie’s wishes to keep things platonic, but he slowly but surely works past her defenses. He is content with a slow but steady build to their relationship but when he realizes there is a very real possibility she will begin dating someone else, Tyler makes his move. This coincides with Janie’s change of heart and the two are soon enjoying some very hot and steamy lovemaking. Tyler keeps trying to convince her to take their relationship public, but Janie’s fears and insecurities quickly derail their burgeoning romance.I have to confess that I do not typically read older woman/younger man romances but there was never any doubt that I was going to read Midnight Ride. First, I am a HUGE fan of Cat Johnson’s cowboy novels and second, there was no way I was going to miss Tyler’s story. I am so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone because Midnight Ride is an absolutely amazing novel. The romance between Tyler and Janie is incredibly heartwarming and I loved watching their characters grow over the course of the story. Tyler still retains all of the characteristics that make him so appealing but falling for Janie gives him some much needed focus. Janie needs a little playfulness to counter her über seriousness but most importantly, it is time for her to seize the opportunity for happiness despite the risks to her heart.Midnight Ride is a sinfully sexy and exceptionally charming first installment in the Midnight Cowboys series. It is a fast paced and engaging love story that will delight readers and leave them impatiently awaiting the next book in this terrific series.I received a complimentary copy for review.

Her "cowboy" romance books have you sitting on the edge of your chair. The characters are so very real that you feel everything they do, say, or feel themselves. This story is a real type of story that happens more than we know. This is going to be be a great series, so saddle up for the ride!!!!

Her neighbor wrote this book. It has been read by others in a small book club. Everyone enjoyed it and it is being passed around to others to read. This one has to be a keeper. Also has been used in a local book club.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Really boring By Claire This was a very disappointing read. It was just plain boring: there was endless introspection; the heroine was self-indulgent and whiny with few redeeming qualities; the hero was interesting and sensitive but we didn't get enough about him; Jed was superficial and not even a little endearing; and the whole theme of the bohemian upbringing just didn't ring true. The writing was different too from Freya North's usual work: it felt pseudo-intellectual and just didn't work. The romance was thin and definitely didn't stir any emotions in this reader. In fact the whole book felt like padding for a thin plot. I am a Freya North fan but this one doesn't even begin to compare to her other books. I recommend giving this one a pass.

By Cyan For me this one didn't have the same flow as the brilliant "Pillow Talk" or even "Home Truths". I felt the writer wasn't present with the characters. Found it difficult to relate to or even like Oriana though I so wanted to. For me she came across as dumb. Malachy was interesting but we didn't get to know him at all. Jed was shallow and somehow none of the characters came to life. Loved the premise of the story and the setting but not enough investment in the characters left me cold. Very disappointed but I loved so many of Freya North's books she won't lose me as a fan! I strongly recommend "Pillow Talk" it's a great read. Not put off just love your other work more!

By Rochelle The way back home is Freya North writing with a rawness that captured me in her characters world, and led me with Oriana, Jed and Malachy, on a journey to reclaim both past and future for themselves and each other.Oriana has returned to her childhood home, carrying with her the pain of the past. In a way she seems locked in a world that she was forced from as a child. Her fretful faulty self reflects the nature of being forced to grow up too fast, resulting in time 'at home' appearing to have stood still. Even though time has marched on at windward - in so many ways, nothing has changed. And the same seems true of Oriana. Her relationships with brothers Jed and Malarchy appear forever entwined in memories and moments of intense emotion. They are thrust backwards, forced to face feelings that lie in the shadows of Windeard, and unravel the past before it strangles them all. There is so much detail in the family dynamics at Windward , with a complex smorgasbord of delightful and despicable characters. But it is Freya North's innate and intuative understanding of relationships that weave them together and ensures that even when someone feels alone, there is always somewhere to go, even if the route is circuitous!A well written beautiful story from Freya North.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A bittersweet story By Melinda Abuse or an uncertain future. This is Laurel Lee Page’s choice when she is faced with an unplanned pregnancy at 19. Born into a broken family, all she has ever known is guilt and shame. No matter what she does or who she meets, Laurel appears to be living a condemned life but she is determined to find independence and freedom in spite of her family’s legacy of hatred and self-contempt.The setting of the 1960’s sets the tone, Vietnam War, JFK Assassination, views on sex and social propriety along with family dynamics, the turbulent times permeate the air with unmistakable tension.I admire authors broaching delicate and often piercing subject matter. Having abuse the apex of the narrative is not easily accomplished, however, Leipold demonstrates capability.Leipold brings abuse – sexual, emotion and mental to the forefront without a multitude of graphic details, instead, forceful seeds are planted leaving a clear indicator of the horrific acts and damage occurring in this broken family.“But God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. He’ll put us through the fire a few times, so we get a little burnt around the edges, but all in all, we come out fine.”The characters leave the reader filled with loathing and love. Laurel’s parents fill you with disgust and rage, questioning how on earth a parent can do the unthinkable, leaving you deeply affected. Being a mother, I was appalled and astonished by Laurel’s mothers reaction and behavior, absolutely insane. Sadly parents and families such as the Page’s exist, damaging innocent children forever and this is where the narrative and Laurel really hit home, this story is reality for some.Laurel, needless to say, steals your heart from the beginning. A girl living in fear, suffering the inconceivable, entering an abyss of darkness. Her strength stealth, as she manages to forge on and carve a life for herself. Her ability to forgive and stand her ground is inspiring. She is the better person than any of her family members. For all Laurel endures you want nothing more for her to find her ultimate happiness.A bittersweet story of one compelling young woman’s strength, determination and ability to forgive at the hand of the inconceivable, a woman resolved in breaking the cycle of abuse.

Novel About Abuse By Lupine Smile I would like to thank Booktrope Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with an electronic copy to read and review. Set in the late 50's to early 60's, Burnt Edges follows Laurel Page from childhood through early adulthood. At the hands of one or both of her parents, Laurel was abused on an almost daily basis. Abuse is an emotionally charged subject, but the author provided only a dispassionate telling of Laurel's horrific childhood. As tragic as her childhood was, I wanted to be taken on a journey with Laurel. In my opinion, the author did not forge that connection and I finished the book feeling that something was missing. The author did not allow the characters to come alive within the pages, which affected how the plot flowed. I appreciate how the author tackled a very difficult subject, as I can imagine how difficult it is to write. Although this particular book did not really catch my eye, I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Gorgeous prose By Emma Scott This is a beautifully written story. There are so many lovely, poetic descriptions woven effortlessly into a story that is not always pretty. They stand out without jarring from the narrative or seeming forced. It makes some of the more unlovely aspects of Laurel's life easier to take.I don't know if it was intentional or not on the part of the author, but the narrative style feels one step removed from the actual events. As if we are viewing the action through Laurel's memories and she's slightly afraid to get too close. And with good reason. But instead of making the story less intimate, it gives Laurel a kind of gentle strength that is lovely to read. It doesn't shy away from anything but lends the entire book an air of hopefulness that just works. The raw yet beautiful language. Highly recommend.
