“There was no such thing as a soulmate. As for the intense connection…well, it must have been her imagination. There was no man who would instinctively understand her, no man who could read her mind. No man who could turn her on with just a look or a word, no man whose touch would override her reason and turn her into the embodiment of passion. And the sooner she let go of that fantasy completely, the sooner she could approach romantic relationships with a clear head and appreciate what she had instead of pining over everything she imagined she was missing.” SERRAN WINTERS is determined to let the fantasy of Nick Enfield go. So why does she find herself asking him to dinner while on tour with her latest romance novel? Perhaps it's because she feels safe in disguise as her pseudonym, Jane Garfield. Besides, it's only a couple of hours...until a hurricane leaves her stranded at his house for three days. Despite NICK ENFIELD’s deep hurt and growing bitterness since his divorce, something about the romance author entrances him from the first moment he sees her. But when he discovers she’s married, he’s determined to resist the intense attraction between them despite her mixed signals. If only his body’s reaction to her weren’t making it so hard to keep her marital status in mind. AT FIRST BLUSH is a story about fantasy versus reality in love and romance, the nature of attraction and connection, and the reasons we choose to fight or follow our impulses.

I figured from the synopsis that they would run back into each other she would be swept off her feet and they would find that they had always felt this connection and fall in love. Happily ever after. However that is not what happened at all. It was more like what would happen in real life. You are always scared or worried that the other person doesn't feel the same way as you no matter how confident you are. When you put your heart out there, there is always that part that worries the other person won't feel the same way as you. Serran wears a wig and make up to make herself unrecognizable when she goes to signing and things like that. She is a teacher by day and the parents wouldn't like that she is a smut writer. She is doing a signing in a town she lived in when she was younger. She has a crush on her best friend's older brother. She is kinda hoping she will run into him and scared to at the same time. Then he walks into the signing and waits in line to have a book signed by her. She recognizes him right away but he doesn't realize it’s her at all because of her disguise. Then out of nowhere she invites him to have dinner with her. Serran doesn't know this but there is a hurricane do to arrive. When Nick comes to pick her up he takes her to his place and cooks for her because all the restaurants have closed early do to the impending hurricane. Then things get a little weird. Serran hasn't told him it, she just keeps acting like her alter writer ego. They have this intense attraction to each other, but both are fighting it for different reasons. Serran's alter ego is Jane and she is married. Nick read the book's jacket and thinks Jane is married and that is why he is fighting his attraction to her, Serran doesn't want to give into her feeling for Nick. She has made him out to be someone he isn't in her mind and she is fighting herself about how he really is and how she has built him up to be in her mind. This book has lots of little twists and turns and is great. I like how they don't automatically fall in love with each other. They fight, have misunderstanding, and finally tell each other the truth. Will they give each other a chance at a future together? Will they be able to make sense of everything that has happened? I would love to read more about these characters and what happens to them next.I was given this book in return for an honest review.

You can "live" in your own fantasy world where things can have that happy ever after like everyone hopes for. Your able to live out fantasies you only dream about or wish for. At least that's what Serran believes. Serran is a teacher for a high school in northern California. The only problem is she also writes romance novels, so therefore she goes under disguise and uses a pen name of Jane Garfield to keep from her students, their parents, or co-workers from knowing she is the author behind the steamy novels she creates. There has always been that one guy who makes Serran's heart flutter & cheeks blush. Her best childhood friend's older brother, Nick. She never understood what is what about him that drew her in, they shared an intense connection she couldn't explain. Almost like he could read her mind. Unfortunately a promise made to her best friend never allowed her to act on these feelings. Serena felt the best way to get him or her feelings out of her system was to write a book based on their history. Except this time she would be able to live out those sexy thoughts she held deep down for so long. Little did she expect an author signing in her hometown would cause her to run into that old flame she wrote about.Nick had a passion for art, but the death of his father brought him back to his hometown to become owner of the construction company left to him. He kept life simple working & remodeling his home. With his mind on making preparations for the upcoming hurricane he doesn't even realize he is headed to the book store until he arrives. Almost like there was a unexplained magnet pull to go there. When he arrives the beautiful Author Jane Garfield catches his attention, he can't help but buy her book so he can have her sign it & meet her. He gets this strange feeling there is something familiar about her but can't seem to place it. When Jane ask him to dinner to "get his male perspective" he is delighted to accept. Little does he realize the woman he is attracted to, author Jane Garfield, is married. So he goes along with dinner keeping his feelings & attraction at bay. He still can't seem to make it past the instinct feeling of familiarity. The hurricane arrives during dinner at his house forcing Serran to stay for a couple of days. During this time the connection between them grows. Serran finally comes clean about who she is during her stay. The intensity between these two are amazing & draw you in as a reader. It will have you rooting for them to have their happily ever after knowing it's been a long time coming. This is the first book I have read by this author and I was pleased. She keeps you interested but yet makes you wish there was a follow up book to the story when it's over. I couldn't put it down. This story will have you believing that reality and fantasy don't always have to be far fetch.

I shall begin with a warning: This review contains minor spoilers!I don't usually write any spoilers, but I can't really give my most sincere review without revealing a tiny bit.It was hard for me to get into this story because the main character, Serran, starts off as a liar. Personally, I have a really hard time with liars. The whole time, you know you're just waiting for the other shoe to drop! That awareness made it hard for me to commit right away. But eventually, I got into the story. I'll even admit that the way the "other shoe" dropped wasn't as predictable as I imagined it would be. However, after I got over the lying bit, there were plenty of other things that kept pulling me out of the warm bubble I wanted to stay in.Serran was hard to like. I really wanted to--I really did! Her hopeless romantic feelings towards Nick, feelings she had held onto for years and years, they made her endearing. However, she was all over the place. I suppose, considering the details I was given, I can understand why. But the way she handled conflict was frustrating. When she was sad or confused or what have you, I couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for her. It took most of the book for me to actually decide that she was alright.I loved Nick. I think his story along with Serran's perception of him (which definitely evolved) made him a hero I could really latch onto. Perhaps it was his honesty, versus everyone else's dishonesty, that also made me root for him and side with him at every turn! He had layers that I wanted to peel back and he was the kind of guy who was willing to let you see and know him and I appreciated that very much.I did like the way Jeanie paced the story. It takes place over a very short amount of time (a week) but the way the plot developed, she kept me wanting and that kept me reading. In the end, though--I was left with way too many questions. There were big issues that had been incorporated in the story that were left practically untouched--even worse, they were pointed out and then...abandoned. No resolutions, no hints to a resolution--just nothing. I absolutely refuse to call the ending of this book an ending. I'm sorry, I just can't name it as such. I can't.I applaud any author who can make me feel and Jeanie definitely did that. There is a part of me that liked the story in spite of all that made me frustrated--because it made me frustrated. I wouldn't have hesitated at all to give this book a four star rating...but the end...In any case, this is just my opinion. I can't say I recommend you read this book--more like...I dare you!
