By Charles Kovacs This is a rather strange book, not so much alternate history as a description of Utopia from a fundamentalist Protestant perspective. I gave it three stars mainly for originality, but can understand why other reviewers rated it lower.The basic premise of the book is that through divine intervention, a small group of Americans are transported to 1770 to remake American history. The mechanics are simple - God can do anything - and presto, the group with its technology and modern weapons for what seems to be the equivalent of a battalion group is moved to 1770 on the US East Coast. The notion of divine intervention is unusual, but it is hardly less probable than most devices used for time travel and/or mystic type novels. Indeed, the first 50+ pages of the book are interesting. After that, the problems start.The most pervasive problem is the author's limited vocabulary, consistent misuse of words (e.g. disburse instead of disperse), and his lack of knowledge of military, naval, historical and economic topics. As he is rewriting the world's history over 250 years, these topics matter, and the mistakes and/or wrong information detract from the story's credibility. Once the time travelers are established, the book becomes less of a novel than a description of Utopia. This is interesting up to a point, it has been done by others (most famously by Sir Thomas More and Aldous Huxley) and many readers may well find at least some aspects of Walker's Utopia attractive notwithstanding his style. The topic is worth revisiting, preferably by an author with a thorough knowledge of world and military history, technology and economics.

An alternative Christian Sci-fi History Novel By RL Towery For those who enjoy alternative history novels, such as those by Harry Turtledove, your in for an interesting read. This novel deals with the concept of God intervening to insure that a remade USA, which places him first, is the supreme nation on the planet. The plan will take over 250 years and the architect will be a young woman, barley 20 years old from the year 2050. Using technology from her time, experts in a variety of professions, and a cadre of special operations military, who will take the name of "Rangers"; you will see the history of the USA changed dramatically. The author's take on making Christianity the predominant religion may rub some people the wrong way but; it's one author's take on what if. I enjoyed it, Nuff said.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable story By Bill hodges I would characterize this as a more palatable "alternative" history. In the first chapter a horrible mess is made and then the protagonists are given the means to clean it up,if they have the guts to do so. Of course there is a happy ending. In these Times we need something to anticipate.(Everyone needs a Christmas morning) I do is enjoy the postulation to which our ways may not be so ideal as to impose them by force---look where that has got us so far. For anyone who is in"The Dumps" A turn with this book should cheer you upBill Hodges/badhodges@verizon.net
