Entertaining and Informative By Max The role of the historical novelist is to bring dry history to life in a way that a pure historian cannot, by going beyond while staying true to the historical record. In this, Robert Brightwell excels. As an avid reader of both histories and novels dealing with the late 18th and early 19th centuries, I had some knowledge of the British campaigns along the Niagara and in the Northwest Territories. This book was both greatly entertaining, and very informative. I now know more than I ever did about those phases of the War of 1812, Meigs Fort, the Battle of Lake Erie, Lundys Lane and Chippawa, especially from the British point of view. I highly recommend this book, as I have recommended the prior books in this series, and I look forward to where Flashman will appear next. I guess, Waterloo.

Started out fairly slow, but did evolve about half way through the novel. Good historical background and the author does do his research, but personally would like to read more of European/Asian adventures. Maybe American and Iroquois interests in the War of 1812 are not "my cup of tea"? Really like historical fiction, but this one was a little flat for me....!!

This fits the bill well, by following the exploits of Uncle Thomas Flashman. Not as good as GMF, but then we really shouldn't expect it to be. I enjoyed the book on its own merits.
