Rock band romance By Linda M. *I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review*DownCrash is an extremely popular local band, on the verge of the big time. These are the stories of Tripp, Tatum, Logan, and the women in their lives. Each book in this trilogy picks up where the last left off and we get to see the flow of events leading to the band's big break.Book 1 - Tripp and ScarletI felt this first book was a little irritating. I don’t feel connected to the characters and didn't even like them that much even allowing for the demons they both carried with them. Some of the things they say and do make no sense to me. I can't stand how Scarlet keeps Andy on a string, knowing how he feels about her, even though in her moments of clarity, she knows Tripp is the one she wants.Book 2 – Tatum and MaggieI liked Tatum a lot. Maggie was fairly sympathetic. The story was really hard to put down once the psycho came on the scene. I might not have understood her thought process so much initially but I definitely got her paralyzing fear of the crazy ex. The romance between Tatum and Maggie was sweet. This is my favorite story of the three.Book 3 - Logan and AnnieThis story was good. Annie is stuck in the pain from the breakup with her ex. Logan is a nice guy who frankly is more patient with her than most guys would be. However, when a crisis threatens to destroy Logan, Annie stays strong and does everything in her power to help him. The only thing I didn't get was her seeming lack of emotion in regards to a crucial moment in the story. Like book 2, there are some riveting moments in this book also.

Burrows I received a ARC copy for an honest review..The first book was hard for me to get through and the other two were just a little better. The characters while they did show growth just were overall immature at times which was very frustrating since I wanted to love the series. Most of the time I would just shake my head because how they acted because it got on my nerves how wishy washy they would be at times.Since they showed a little bit of growth I gave it 3 stars but beware the characters almost act like they are still in high school at times

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not for me. By Rhiannon Thomas Unfortunately, I don't do love triangles and that is the entire premise of this book. I might could have been at least partially ok with this storyline if there would have been kissing only with Scarlet and Andy. But not so much. Overall, this story just didn't work for me. I relieved an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Her known world was shattered by a Soviet bullet. Only six years old, Terez was already learning about life s mean streaks. But being an orphan didn t stop her. At seventeen she was one of the youngest women in a 1960 s Chicago medical school, where love, racism and loss were thrust upon her, creating a distaste for life in her adopted country. Fleeing to a clinic in rural Afghanistan, she embraces romance once more, only to have it stolen from her a second time, along with her son. Grief and guilt envelop her in a dark shroud and to emerge from this she must fight her own demons as well as the twin devils of war and terrorism. Teri s journey will resonate with anyone who has had to find resilience and fortitude to overcome obstacles in life and with anyone who is opposed to war and terrorism.

The sins of the past always return...The General.  A name whispered in hushed tones among the criminal underworld, from Miami to Buenos Aires.  A name even the drug cartels fear.  Yet the General is a man without a face.  There are no fingerprints on file, no known base of operations, not even a biographical sketch.  He operates in the shadows, but somehow controls a vast criminal empire. And he has never made a direct incursion onto U.S. soil -- until now.In Miami, disgraced DEA agent Fred Hernandez is called to investigate a bizarre crime scene, where the bodies of four drug dealers are sprawled around an iron cauldron.  Even stranger is the mysterious 'blue lady' that a drug-addled witness claims killed the men.Lana Valenciano, an ambitious CIA operative, informs Agent Hernandez that the murders might be connected to a legendary South American criminal known as the General.  Lana claims the General has become a threat to national security -- but has no idea how to find him.The government's best hope?  Private investigators Dominic Grey and Viktor Radek, who might be the only people alive with the skills to unravel the General's tangled web.  Thrown together on a covert manhunt, Grey and the two agents delve into the darkest reaches of international drug trafficking, only to unearth a sinister chapter in the history of the CIA that has spilled into the present -- and put them in the crosshairs of an underworld puppeteer with a frightening reach.

Review

Praise for the Dominic Grey Series:

“The Summoner is one of those books that make you want to turn on all the lights in your house and lock the doors…The settings are authentic and you can feel and smell the countryside…This is a wonderful read for those who enjoy both suspense and action stories.” —Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“Stirring and imaginative, with an engaging premise that is briskly paced. Both the characters in the story and the reader are in for a wild ride.” —Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author of The King's Deception

"Part international thriller, part theology text, part philosophic treatise on good and evil, part intricate, unforgettable nightmare-inducing fever dream, The Diabolist has everything you want from a thriller. Layton Green is a master of intellectual suspense. This one’s a killer." —JT Ellison, bestselling author of Edge of Black

“Layton Green kicks things up a notch and delivers a novel that should, if there's any justice to be found upon the shelves, make him a household name. The Diabolist is a dark, intelligent, spellbinding novel…I cannot recommend this one highly enough. —Beauty in Ruins Reviews

“Green’s The Summoner proved his great talent. The Diabolist ensures his place at the top of crime fiction: his number 1 place. Unbelievably good, unbelievably intricate, unbelievably Green.” —The Review Broads

“The Diabolist by Layton Green brings together ancient religions, New Age cults, and heroes with dark pasts in a top-shelf novel…It was hard for me to put this book down at night simply to sleep.” —Night Owl Reviews

“Dan Brown is pretty good at what he does and I don't begrudge him his success, but when it comes to interesting characters embarking on a thrilling exploration into the dark world of cults, religions, and magic, Layton Green does it SO much better.” —Nylon Admiral Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I continue to love Layton Green's novels By Rusty Dalferes I continue to love Layton Green's novels. They're well-written, well-researched, and well-paced, combining plot and character development in the proper ratio, with interesting locales and mythologies. This novel did not disappoint. In his third novel in the Grey Series, The Diabolist, Green increased the pace and the body count, making it a page-turner that I could not put down for fear of being just one more page from another great turn of plot. In the Shadow Cartel, Green maintains the pace, but splices in great flashbacks to provide insight into the mind of the antagonist. It's a brilliant melding of Green's usual plotlines (investigation of dangerous cult activity around the world) with the psychogenesis of a cult leader and crime lord. The story takes real-world examples of dangerous cult activity and builds upon those, creating not only a thriller than spans continents, but one which has a realistic feel, as though the novel could be a case file of the DEA, FBI, or CIA.The novel continues the evolution of the two main characters (Dominic Grey and Viktor Radek), whose backstories exploded in the last novel, but also introduces new characters whose allegiances are in constant question. Without giving too many spoilers, there may be a returning character or two from earlier novels, used with great effect for the continuing development of Grey and Radek. However, this time the novel delves into the world of cult activity as the instigator of a global criminal enterprise, making this novel not just a location-specific cult query, but a larger international criminal investigation with both religious and financial implications on the world scale. As with his other novels, the story takes the reader around the world in a search for truth, and Green's descriptions of each location is vivid and lush.I maintain my view that Layton Green is one of the best thriller writers out there -- whether it's spy thriller, crime story, supernatural mystery, or any other genre out there dependent on plot and good characters. I urge everyone who reads any fiction in the larger thriller umbrella to read everything by this author.

By Dan Mayland An intelligent, fast-paced thriller that delves deep into long-forgotten histories and fascinating religious cults. The characters—some of whom are capable of great empathy, some great cruelty, some both—are exceptionally well-drawn. Really well-written. Brilliantly weaves together multiple plot lines. Spot-on observations of Latin America—I’ve traveled to many of the regions Green writes about and his depictions not only rang true but, more importantly, helped me see these places in a new light. The focus on the drug trade, and all its attendant hypocrisies and moral quagmires, added real depth to the story. And as always, Green manages to write about in religion in a way that intrigues and illuminates rather than answers and instructs.

Riviting suspense By TicToc Posted first to Blog Critics as Book Review: 'The Shadow Cartel, A Dominic Grey Novel' by Layton Green.Layton Green takes us deep into the underworld of drugs and murder in The Shadow Cartel, A Dominic Grey Novel. When Grey is asked to look into the death of a friend by his old girlfriend, he can’t refuse. Little does he know that this cartel is run by a man known only as the General. a legend in the drug trade. He is invisible to those in the DEA who have been following the rumor of such a monster for years. This character has combined religious ceremony using dark ceremonies as well as mythical assassins to keep the cartel in line and to keep all others away. He is ruthless but invisible. Also following the General are DEA agents Federico Hernandez and CIA operative Lana Valenciano, who decide to hook up with Grey in his quest for information. As the leads tend to create misdirection and the rumors of death by mysterious assassins continue to grow, Grey must rely on every investigation from his past to help them find this elusive yet invisible killer before he can kill again. His mentor is out of commission, yet Grey keeps him informed of the strange and shadowy secrets they are tracking. Viktor is unavailable, but his mind is as sharp as ever, and he helps guide them to connections where there seem to be nothing. The strange world of unusual religions happens to be Viktor’s specialty, and he has contacts and knowledge that keep Grey on track. With all the help at his disposal can Grey find the General and keep the deaths from piling up? Can he find the answers behind the mythical assassins before they strike again?Green gives us characters that have guts and a strong survival instinct. They are smart and at times extremely dangerous. While many of the thugs are just that, they are always controlled by their own fears, and Green gives us that scary individual that hangs out in your nightmares in the form of the General. His character Grey is quite heroic but also very caring about people. Those he cares about have a champion, but those he is after understand his drive, so he is constantly in danger. Green portrayal keeps you guessing. If you enjoy mystery and things that go bump in the night you will enjoy The Shadow Cartel. Dominic Grey is an investigator with heart, and his past as well as his elusive mentor keeps him ahead of many of the situations. This is an exciting work and if you enjoy the characters you will be looking for Green’s past work as well. This would be a great work for a reading or discussion group.

What can exist does exist. Rome, September, 1978: Pope John Paul I is found dead in his bedroom. No autopsy is performed. The body of a young nun is discovered near the Vatican. The verdict, death by poisoning. Present Day: Dominic Quinn returns to Ireland to attend his father's funeral. His sole inheritance, a mystery dating back two thousand years. His only clues, a few enigmatic words that others would prefer to stay buried - at any cost. Surrounded by lethal enemies, Dominic is drawn into the shadowy world of Vatican covert operations. He travels to Rome to unravel the secrets of a first-century manuscript, reputedly written by the Virgin Mary. What he finds will challenge everything he thought he knew about his past, the origins of Christianity, and the nature of the universe itself. And, beneath the Vatican, in an unexcavated region of the necropolis where the tomb of the Virgin Mary is rumored to reside, the evil that pursues him will clash head on with the divine. Stephen Marley, a member of International Thriller Writers, is a British author and video game designer. He has had eight novels and a number of short stories published, including a revised edition of "Mary Messiah." His third novel, "Mortal Mask," was acclaimed a 'masterpiece' in the Clute/Grant The Encyclopedia of Fantasy.

Review "The pace never slows. In addition to the fast-paced thriller, this novel is also filled with early church history and ancient science, especially concerning time and other dimensions ... Marley's characters are well developed and believable,... Mystery readers who enjoy a spine-tingling thriller with an historical basis will certainly find The Heresy to be a gripping and engaging read."                                                                                           LAS Reviewer

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Astounding book - blew me away By ClaraH The Heresy isn't just good - it's great! So I've got a job on my hands to do it justice.I finished reading this novel less than an hour ago and my mind is so full of the convincing characters, plot twists and inspiring themes that I'm finding it difficult to present a coherent summary. But, here goes...The Heresy, aside from being a fast-paced, exciting mystery action religious political thriller (excuse the mouthful but it's all of those!) asks that fundamental question, is death the end of our existence, or is there more to our lives than a materialist philosophy would have us believe? The answer Marley provides, based on current ideas in speculative physics, is the first truly convincing answer that I've ever read. I won't give the answer here -no spoilers :) - but I will give a hint - "block theory of time".I'm not particularly religious, by the way, but the overlap between modern science and ancient philosophy, both Christian and pre-Christian, that I found in The Heresy was one of the most fascinating I've ever encountered. I found myself constantly checking the amazing facts mentioned in the book, and every time they turned out to be true. That's so refreshing after being disappointed by Dan Brown and similar "Vatican thrillers".This is my first review because, although I've read many books, this is the first that made me want to bang on everyone's door and yell "You've got to read this!!!" But it would be more civilised to simply say to all Amazon readers... "You've really, really, got to read this astounding book!"Wishing all my fellow readers much enjoyment in your reading!

Right from the start, the story grabbed me. And, more importantly, chapter after chapter, it wouldn't let me go! I had intended to read it over a week or so, due to my busy schedule, but I found myself reading into the wee small hours, unable to put it down. Just one more chapter, I told myself, then sleep. Then it was one more chapter, and one more, and... well, I think you get the picture. I read the whole book in two days. The Heresy, a religious conspiracy thriller, based largely on fact, contains so much little known and enthralling ancient history and frontier physics delivered in a fast-paced narrative full of clever twists and turns, that it's impossible to do the book justice in a review. ! This type of what I consider religious conspiracy thrillers are my favorite read. I must say that perhaps Mr. Marley might maybe dumb it down a bit, some of the Science theories were way over my head. But still didn't stop me from loving this book. I REALLY. REALLY hope to see more of this type of book from the author.

I enjoyed this book, Shontay was a boss without a man, but allowed Andre to bring her completely out of her comfort zone. Once he succeeded in breaking her down, he decided to go off with the next chick. My heart broke for Shontay when she lost her little one, but nothing makes it ok to make a baby with her best friend. Ugh, he just worked my last nerve! Glad Tay found her a ride-or-die in the end, it is so true that messing with folks emotions can cost you your life! Waiting for the next installment....

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. bomb.com By Paulette brock  I swear you have done it again for my eyes lol ! I have never seen friends more vicious then these three characters. Monica is a piece of work, that thang made me wanna jump through the pages and choke her. How could you treat a child that way? Then he a piece of you, so that makes it worst. Teria smh that's a nasty fee . She has no shame in her game, and that's the sad part. Rayana had her mess ups to but comparing her to the other two characters, she is a saint. Reem and Roscoe were and just trifling ! Just like the females Lol. Poor Stephon and Jabari (sr/jr), I hope Monroe get some payback in part two, cause justice definitely needs to be served. You did that Reds!!!!Sn. Only problem I had with this book was its was short ( I wanted more lol). And there were some editing issues as well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Grimmy, Ratchet, down right messy By Amazon Customer Reds lawd hunnie smh...... the drama and the betrayal in this book was unbelievable. Monica,Shateria, and Rayauna was definitely some crazy chicks. Monica wasn't nothing but a dead beat parent. I applaud Stephon for stepping up and taking care of her son even though he wasn't his. Shateria was one of the worst females. She didn't care bout nobody even herself smh. He was the worst out of the trio. Rayauna I don't really fault her for anything. She did her diarrhea. But it wasn't like Monica and Shateria really liked her the way they treated and talked about her. I hope Monica, Shateria, Reem and Roscoe get what's coming to them. I was shocked at how Reem and Roscoe continued to mess with them know how trifling and nasty they were with their bad hygiene and the foul smells they carried smh.

Excerpt from Radioactivity and Geology, an Account of the Influence of Radioactive Energy on Terrestrial HistoryShortly after the meeting of the British Association in Dublin last year, it was suggested to me by several friends that my Presidential Address to Section C might with advantage be re-written in a more extended and less technical form. The same suggestion reached me from a few well-known publishers, foremost among whom was the firm whose name appears on the title-page. The idea was already in my mind, for I had been compelled, by the limits necessarily imposed on a Presidential Address, to leave unsaid much that I thought should be said, not only for purposes of elucidation, but by way of addition. Thus it was that the present volume originated. But when the task of re-writing the Address was begun, it soon became apparent that mere expansion of the matter already in print was insufficient to meet the requirements of those who, for various reasons, may be unable to abstract from a highly specialized and voluminous literature the principles underlying this new branch of geological research.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DUN ARD

SCOTLAND

DECEMBER 1295

The clipped fall of boots on stone sounded loud in the deserted hallways of Dun Ard. Though few would be up and about at this early hour, Caden MacAlister had no doubt his cousin would already be hunkered over the estate accounts in his solar as he was each and every morning. Blane MacKiernan, Laird of the MacKiernan, taught the importance of hard work by setting an example.

Caden paused at the heavy wooden door, unconsciously running a large hand through his tousled dark copper hair as he gathered his wits and his courage. He had considered his alternatives time and again. This must be done.

He rapped his knuckles sharply against the door, the vibrations echoing in his stomach. Or was that simply nerves?

"Enter."

He pushed open the door and approached his cousin's desk. "I've come to a decision and I must speak with you." Quickly. Before he lost his nerve.

Blane looked up from the work spread in front of him, a smile creasing his face. "Very well, Caden. Have a seat and share yer great decision with me."

Caden shook his head, declining the offer to sit. He thought better on his feet. "You must choose one of my brothers as your heir. I'm no longer fit to be the next laird of the MacKiernan." There. He'd said it. It was done.

His cousin leaned back in his chair, studying the hands he steepled together. At last he looked up, a confused frown replacing his earlier smile. "I had thought you cared for our people and this land."

"I do. And that's why I ask you to choose another as yer heir." Even though this was all he had ever really wanted.

"Explain yerself."

"The next laird should be someone who'll love this place, these people. Someone who'll look after them, improve their lot in life and pass it all on to his own son to do the same." And he would never be able to do that.

Blane nodded. "Exactly what I've chosen you to do, lad."

"I canna, Cousin. After what's happened with Alycie, I ken now I'll no ever wed. There will be no sons to succeed me."

He would never have a wife. Alycie had found the idea of marriage to him so repulsive she had betrayed his sister and cousin in order to escape him, almost causing their deaths. He would never again put his family in such jeopardy. Nor would he trust another woman. Alycie was now happily installed in the convent on Iona as she had wanted, and he would remain unmarried as the fates had obviously intended.

"Yer young yet, Caden. Mayhap one day you'll change yer mind on this."

"No. I'll no allow any other lass to be forced to face marriage to me. I've made my decision, just as you made yers all those years ago."

Blane rose from his chair, coming around his desk to place a hand on his young cousin's shoulder. "I chose never to wed because I feared any son of mine would carry the madness of my father and my brother. I would no risk exposing Dun Ard and her people to that tragedy again. Yer situation is entirely different. You take too much blame upon yerself, lad."

Caden shook his head. He deserved the blame. He knew his limitations. Of the three MacAlister brothers, he saw himself as the least desirable to a woman. He had neither Andrew's pretty face nor Colin's warrior abilities. He wanted only to manage Dun Ard. To find new ways to help their land and their people prosper. And while one day he would have been the laird of the MacKiernan, that alone wasn't enough to hold a wife. He'd learned that from his experience with Alycie.

No, Caden knew he was not meant to find the happiness of a mate in life. And though he had never known why his cousin remained unwed and childless, he suspected that Blane revealed his reason now in an attempt to provide solace. Solace he didn't deserve. "Still, I dinna thinkÊ.Ê.Ê."

"There's no a need to think on this, lad. I willna choose any to be my heir other than you. I've invested too many years in you and you've learned too well the duties of a laird. You'll go off to school as we'd planned, and when you return you'll pick up where you left off. You are my heir and that's my last word on the subject."

"And when I never wed? When I have no sons to continue the line?"

Blane smiled again, squeezing Caden's shoulder before he dropped his hand and walked back to his chair. "If that is the way of it, then you'll do as I have and choose someone. Perhaps one of yer brothers' brats will succeed you, aye? Now off with you. I've work to do before I take my morning meal."

Caden waited, unsure of what to do next. He'd struggled for weeks trying to make the right decision. And now that he finally had, Blane had dismissed his concerns as minor.

"Go on," Blane encouraged. "Oh, we're still going out to inspect the sheep pens later this morning, are we no?"

"If that's yer wish," Caden replied, leaving the room and shutting the door behind him.

He was almost embarrassed at the relief he felt, knowing at least part of his life would continue as he'd always hoped. He would have Dun Ard to live for.

And as for his own heir?

Just as Blane had said, Drew and Colin would marry and have sons. He would simply have to wait and watch to see what time would bring.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Medieval Scottish Time Travel! By D. Merrimon Crawford In present day Prairieland, Texas, Ellie Denton's life has become more than complicated. Ray Stanton, her mother's ex-husband, is back in town trying to steal the family ranch out from under her. Ellie's gift with animals takes on an unusual twist when the animals start talking back to her. If that alone wasn't enough to upend her world, a simple wish for true love and an escape turns all too real when faerie magic transports her back to 14th century Scotland. Caden MacAlister has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Responsible for his family as well as the welfare of the land, Caden does not need a woman complicating his life, especially not one sent by the Fae! He has already experienced the kind of complications this kind of magic brings. Convinced she must be sent for one of his brothers, he now must protect her while trying to rescue a brother held for ransom. Ellie Denton, however, might just be exactly the kind of complication he needs if only he can learn to trust her and open his heart.A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a lot of light-hearted fun. A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN has a contemporary tone set by the delightful modern personality of the heroine now faced with a strange medieval setting. Told mostly through the heroine's point of view, A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a wonderful mix of humor, fantasy and emotion. In addition, Melissa Mayhue creates a rich depth of character in her portrayal of Caden, allowing the reader to see the inner conflicts of the medieval hero though his point of view. She peers into his heart. Melissa Mayhue does an excellent job of bridging the two different time periods, not only in the description of the time travel itself but also in the hero and heroine's interactions and in showing those things that men and women of all ages have in common. The Texas backdrop and some comments the heroine makes about cowboys as she is faced with a different world (the medieval one) before her are priceless. Medieval enthusiasts in particular will appreciate Melissa Mayhue's portrayal of the hero and the contrast between the hero and heroine. Although Melissa Mayhue brings together a modern woman and a medieval hero, she does not use one as a foil for the other but rather treats each with a vision that sees into the character of both. In many ways, the medieval world view allows Ellie a certain freedom and opportunity to grow as an individual through love and also within herself as an individual. Ellie's ability to talk to dogs and animals adds humor while also creating a soft spot for her sense of compassion and boldness. Melissa Mayhue never uses the heroine's unusual connection to animals or the faerie magic as a mere plot devise or shortcut to make things just happen or make the hero and heroine do things without developing as characters. Instead, she fully integrates both aspects within the very fabric of her tale.As Ellie and Caden are drawn together through a dangerous suspenseful subplot, the light tone of the romance changes in one brutal scene towards the end. In view of this, readers only wanting only light moments in a romance should be forewarned. Nevertheless, this moment is where Melissa Mayhue truly shows her skill. Here, everything so carefully built up beforehand comes together emotionally and in terms of plot and characterization. In my opinion, removing this scene would be detrimental to the depth of the romance. The ending is superb! The resolution adds several new twists. When faerie magic, love and determination combine, all things are possible!Although fourth in the Daughters of the Glen series, A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN works as a stand-alone romance. Melissa Mayhue gives just enough inkling to let the reader know the history behind the other romances in the series, but not so much that this book gets bogged down with past books. A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN leaves new readers feeling satisfied rather than as an outsider trying to catch up with a series. Nevertheless, I certainly have a keen interest in discovering more about the hero's past after having met him in this book. Here in the fourth book, Melissa Mayhue handles the series aspect exquisitely with a fine balance between revitalizing the series itself with a new tale for lovers of series while also creating a romance that feels complete in and of itself for new readers --- but with just enough intrigue to make the past of the fictional world intrigue.Melissa Mayhue's A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a wonderful medieval time travel romance! A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a romance that will appeal to a wide range of readers with its historical setting, contemporary heroine and magical atmosphere. Medieval enthusiasts will find a special delight in Melissa Mayhue's medieval world. For medieval lovers, the humor is even richer as Melissa Mayhue captures so perfectly the complications and delights of both the modern woman and the fascination with the medieval world.COURTESY OF BOOK ILLUMINATIONS

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. 4 Bookmarks from Wild on Books! By Natalie S Ellie Denton's luck is gone. Nearing the end of her rope, she leaves the home she once knew and the fact that it isn't her choice to do so hurts her heart. Her mother's evil and disgusting ex-husband has seemingly stolen Ellie's home right out from under her. She also has to contend with a new birthmark that has suddenly shown up on her body and the added fact that she can understand animals. Ellie has no idea what turn her life is going to take or why. Finding herself in medieval Scotland might be her first clue that all is not what it seems - seeing Caden MacAlister might be her second. The actuality that she is part Fae is the third. Ellie's life will never be the same whether in historical Scotland or in modern day Texas but if she had a highlander of her very own, things just might be magical.More than once I was pulled in and totally focused on Ellie's predicament especially since unknown forces are conspiring against this likeable female character. Fully not expecting to have a wish granted, Ellie finds herself in the past after making an innocent wish while alone and sad. Part Faerie, Ellie has to contend with Caden MacAlister, a man who adamantly refuses to believe what is right in front of his face. He refuses to even consider the fact that Ellie just might be his one true love. He is handsome, virile, and loyal to the bone. His loyalty to wanting his brothers' happiness above his own is what drew me to this enigmatic character in the first place. While he falls in love with Ellie, he selflessly tries to steer her towards his other male family members which is quite fun to watch because the Fae that is in Ellie's blood is having none of it. In spite of it all, Caden and Ellie find out that love does work in mysterious and magical ways.Romance and magic combine to entice the reader. A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN by Melissa Mayhue is a great fourth book of her Daughters of the Glen series.***Natalie S. for Wild on Books***

To many times I have read a paranormal romance and found the plot lines absolutely laughable, corny and not worth reading. This series of books is excellent (all of them)! Most of the books I have read in the paranormal genre have been vampire romances, these were such a refreshing change for me. I highly recommend all The Daughters of the Glen books.

Still, nothing about this quirky town is quite what he expected, and "ordinary" Madeline is the most extraordinary woman he's ever met. Refreshingly honest, disarmingly sweet. Achingly beautiful.

Planning the perfect wedding leads to candlelit dinners and strolls through snow-covered streets. And Madeline finds Jonny in real life even more captivating than her celebrity crush. But will the action star be brave enough to risk his heart and step into the role of a lifetime?

One of the first rules of running a successful wedding gown store was to not insult the bride or her wedding party. And while she normally would have mentioned that to her assistant, in this case the question was kind of legitimate. It wasn't just the very full skirt on the bridesmaids' dresses. A billowing that was oddly, well, pumpkin shaped. It wasn't the colors, which ranged from tangerine to coral to, um, pumpkin. But when those two elements were put together with a pale green crown of leaves and tiny flowers on each of their six heads, the overall effect was just a little…pumpkiny."The bride told me this is exactly what she wanted," Madeline murmured. "That she's been dreaming about her wedding since she was a little girl and these are the dresses she pictured. She was thrilled we could find them."Madeline smiled at her assistant. "Every bride has a perfect dress and a vision for what she wants her wedding party to look like. Our job is to find out what that dream is and make it come true."Rosalind looked doubtful, but nodded, as if taking mental notes. The fortysomething brunette had been working at Paper Moon for about a month now. With her kids all in middle and high school, she'd wanted to return to the workforce. Madeline needed someone she could depend on and Rosalind came with good references. So far, they were doing well as a team, although Rosalind still found the various bridal idiosyncrasies surprising.Madeline returned her attention to the wedding party. She double-checked the fit of each dress, confirmed the bride was giddy with happiness, then promised a final pressing before the dresses were picked up the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Because the, um, pumpkin wedding was the Saturday after the holiday.By three o'clock the bridal party had left. Madeline retreated to her office to finish up some paperwork. After processing invoices, confirming a couple of deliveries and noting when her favorite bridal designer's new summer collection would be available, she leaned back in her chair and allowed herself a rare moment of contentment. She loved her job. She wasn't saving the world or finding a new source of renewable energy—but in her own small way, she helped people be happy. Brides came in all shapes, sizes and temperaments, but for the most part, she loved each one of them. She loved the look on their faces when they found the right dress. The happy tears were so satisfying.Sure there was drama, but she could handle a little drama. It kept things interesting. And when the drama was over and the bride emailed her a picture of herself on the big day, well, nothing was sweeter. She was just plain lucky, she thought. If not in love, then certainly in every other part of her life. Because—"Hello, Madeline."Two simple words spoken in a kind voice. That should have been fine. Or even nice. Instead, Madeline stared at the well-dressed woman standing in the doorway of her office and knew that her life was about to change. She couldn't say how or why, but as surely as the sun would rise in the east, when Mayor Marsha Tilson showed up looking slightly expectant, things happened."Ma'am," Madeline said, instantly coming to her feet.Because that was how she'd been raised. You stood when an older person came in the room.Mayor Marsha had been the mayor of Fool's Gold for longer than Madeline had been alive. She was, in fact, California's longest serving mayor. She was much loved, warm, caring and had a way of knowing things that no one had ever been able to explain. Madeline had always liked her. She found her a little scary, but she liked her."Do you have a minute?" the mayor asked, already walking into the small office and taking a seat."Of course."Madeline was a little relieved when Dellina Ridge, Fool's Gold's event planner, followed the mayor into her office and offered a reassuring smile. Dellina was a good friend. If something bad was about to happen, not only would Dellina have warned her but she would have offered moral support and brownies."As you know," Mayor Marsha began when they were all seated, "the holidays are a busy time here in town."Madeline nodded. Fool's Gold loved to celebrate in every way possible. From mid-November until after the first of the year, there was always something going on. Lucky for her, it was an especially slow time at Paper Moon, which meant she got to enjoy everything going on around her.The rhythm of a bridal shop was different from regular retail. Come January second, when a lot of stores slowed down, she would be juggling newly engaged brides-to-be. Many a proposal would be made on either Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. But that wasn't why the mayor was here.Mayor Marsha glanced at Dellina, who scooted to the front of her chair and gave another smile."It's me," Dellina admitted, sounding a little rueful. "I'm totally scrambling. The Hendrix family is planning a huge party on New Year's Eve, there are a dozen holiday events and three weddings, and I'm up to my eyebrows in invitations and details. I can't take on one more thing."Madeline still wasn't sure where this was all going. "If you need me to help with something, I'm happy to," she said slowly. Of course she would be there for her friend. But why wouldn't Dellina have come to her directly? They'd known each other all their lives. Why involve the mayor?Dellina shifted slightly. "Yes, well, it's more than my usual panicked call to come stuff goodie bags. It's a wedding."Madeline looked between the two of them. "I don't understand," she admitted."There's going to be a wedding the Saturday after Christmas," the mayor said happily. "You know how I love a wedding. This will be a small affair. Right now the guest list is at forty. I suspect it will grow a little, but shouldn't be more than fifty or fifty-five people. There's no location issue—everything will be at the bride's brother's house. The catering is taken care of.""Ana Raquel is handling that," Dellina added. "She had a cancellation and can fit in the wedding. So it's just the basic details. Dress, invitations, decorations. I know it's a lot to ask…" Her friend shook her head. "I'm sorry. We haven't asked yet, have we?"Mayor Marsha patted Dellina's hand. "I'll do the asking, dear. Madeline, your town needs you to plan a wedding. Are you up for it?""I don't know," Madeline admitted. "I've never done anything like that before. I work with brides and we talk details, but to take a wedding from start to finish, even a small one, would be challenging."Which was as close to saying no as she was going to get, she thought as the mayor continued to look at her with that steady, supportive You'll do what I say because I have powers and you've never once refused me anything look that was both famous and inescapable."I have a master list and I'd be happy to help," Dellina added. "I'm sorry to put you in this position.""Don't apologize," Mayor Marsha said firmly. "I'm to blame. When I spoke with Dellina earlier today and she said she wasn't available, we brainstormed who we could ask. You're the one we both thought of."Madeline got the subtext of the message. Dellina had been as trapped as she was now. When Mayor Marsha wanted something done, she was unstoppable. Which meant saying no wasn't an option.Planning a wedding in seven weeks, over the holidays, when she'd never done much more than be a bridesmaid and sell wedding dresses? Were they crazy?"Sure," she said easily. "I'm in." She frowned as she realized she didn't know anyone who had recently gotten engaged, or even who was planning a holiday wedding. "Oh, who's getting married?""Ginger Blaze."The name meant nothing. "She's not local. Is her fiancé…"Madeline felt her heart stop. Physically stop. There had been steady beating, then nothing. That was followed by a distinct popping sound in her ears along with panic. Cold, slimy, I-can't-breathe panic."Blaze," she whispered. Quite the trick what with her heart stopped and her lungs not working. "Blaze as in Jonny Blaze?"Mayor Marsha nodded. "Ginger is his younger sister. I believe she lives in San Francisco. She's in a PhD program. Something with biology or genetics. Mr. Blaze wasn't clear. However, he asked me to help him find someone to plan the wedding with him. That's when I approached Dellina. You know the rest, my dear."Jonny Blaze? The tall, handsome action-movie star who had recently moved to a ranch outside of town? The man who had a body like a god and a smile that reduced perfectly intelligent, articulate women to puddles? Jonny Blaze, who was, unbeknownst to him, of course, her movie-star boyfriend? No. She couldn't. She had a mad crush on him. Every time she'd seen him in town, she'd stared like an idiot. She'd babbled and he hadn't been closer than twenty-five feet. She couldn't imagine being next to him, let alone working with him.I can't. There. She'd said it. Or at least thought it. Which was practically the same thing. She couldn't."From what I can tell, Mr. Blaze is a very nice man," the mayor was saying. "He wants to fit in. Be a part of the community. As you know, we take the well-being of our citizens very seriously. Mr. Blaze needs a refuge from the trappings of his career and we can provide that. The quiet, everyday kind of life he craves.""The wedding is going to be close friends and family," Dellina added. "It's small and intimate. I swear, if I had an extra second, I'd take it on.""You're already doing too much," Madeline said, pleased she could speak. "I know you. You're running in forty-five directions."If it were anyone else, she thought frantically. But it wasn't and saying no had never been an option. She drew in a breath and told herself she was strong. She was mature. At the very least, she could keep from squealing in his presence."I'm happy to help," she said."Excellent." Mayor Marsha nodded. "You're meeting with him in an hour."Of course she was, Madeline thought, not even surprised. Because that was how the mayor got things done. A well-planned ambush followed by a lack of time to come to one's senses. An hour. Not nearly enough time to lose five pounds, have a makeover and become glamorous and sophisticated. Why, oh, why hadn't she learned French? Or aikido? Anything that would make her interesting for Jonny Blaze? She briefly wondered if aikido was the martial arts training or the dog breed, then sighed. Too late to worry about that now. As it was, she was going to be stuck being herself."I'm going to tell him I don't have any experience with planning a wedding," she said. "I need to be honest about that."The mayor smiled. "I would expect no less, my dear."

As a longtime Susan Mallery fan , I can say it's Susan's writing style that has me continuing to read her books. This one I felt, goes back and forth as far as how interesting the story is. At times, I thought it was slow and others , it had that Susan Mallery magic.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Too pricey for mediocre book By bjsmith I will be in the minority in my review. If I had not been desperate for something to read I would not have bought this book. The price was entirely too high for a digital book. I have read all of the Fool's Gold books by this author and as others have posted this town has lost its appeal. Mayor Marsha and her ESP ways have grown stale and so dry that the stories are hard to swallow. It's time to move on to another town.

The e-book does not contain any illustrations (the printed book has many). This book gives a lot of information about the early Christians, old churches, pagan temples and funeral sites. The author, Rololfo Lanciani (1845-1929), was an Italian archeologist and was a distinguished scholar. His most important work was the production of a topographical map of Ancient Rome. His book on pagan and Christian Rome is still readable; it is a book I can recommend for anyone who's interested in Roman, Italian or early-Christian history. It may also be good reading for anyone who is going to visit Rome, the book will give you some in-depth background information on some of the most important landmarks in the city. The contents of this book is:CHAPTER I: THE TRANSFORMATION OF ROME FROM A PAGAN INTO A CHRISTIANCITYCHAPTER II: PAGAN SHRINES AND TEMPLESCHAPTER III: CHRISTIAN CHURCHESCHAPTER IV: IMPERIAL TOMBSCHAPTER V: PAPAL TOMBSCHAPTER VI: PAGAN CEMETERIESCHAPTER VII: CHRISTIAN CEMETERIESLUDI SÆCULARES, INSCRIPTION EDITED BY MOMMSEN(There are footnotes at the end of each chapter.)As a sampler I will copy a few lines from the second chapter:[...]'Ancient guide-books of Rome, published in the middle of the fourthcentury, mention four hundred and twenty-four temples, threehundred and four shrines, eighty statues of gods, of precious metal,sixty-four of ivory, and three thousand seven hundred and eighty-fivemiscellaneous bronze statues. The number of marble statues is notgiven. It has been said, however, that Rome had two populations ofequal size, one alive, and one of marble.'[...]'The existence of a temple of Hercules, outside the Porta S.
