Death is everywhere. For Luke and his brothers, this fact had been tucked away at the very back of their minds. It was easy to forget how fragile life was until Bryan showed up one day, mostly drowned, beaten, and blaming them. Bryan told Luke that he and a number of other children had been kidnapped and held prisoner by a group of people who wore cloaks and hoods that kept their faces hidden--the same uniform that Luke wore every day. Now it's up to Luke to find out how much of Bryan's story is true and to see if it is really possible that his people who claim to value human life more than anything else, could be behind something so terrible.

. Learning to have reading routine is like discovering how to attempt for eating something that you really do not want. It will need more times to help. Moreover, it will certainly also bit make to offer the food to your mouth and swallow it. Well, as reading a book , occasionally, if you need to review something for your new jobs, you will really feel so woozy of it. Even it is a book like ; it will make you really feel so bad.

War. To quote Edwin Starr, “What is it good for?” FUBAR by Weston Ochse is a 90,000-word collection of fiction and non-fiction. A complete cumulation of Weston’s war stories and essays, created over nearly twenty years by a military veteran with more than thirty years of service. From 1997 to new works never before published, this collection brings together all genres of the work Weston has written that is based around conflict and war. ~~~~~~~~ “Weston is one of the best authors of our generation." —Brian Keene, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Rising “Weston Ochse is to horror what Bradbury is to science fiction — an artist whose craft, stories and voice are so distinct and mesmerizing that you can't help but be enthralled.” —Dani Kollin, Prometheus Award-winning author of The Unincorporated Man "SEAL Team 666 is like X-Files and Torchwood written by Tom Clancy: ingenious, creepy, and entertaining." —Kevin J. Anderson, #1 international-bestselling author of Death Warmed Over “Weston Ochse is a mercurial writer, one of those depressingly talented people who are good at whatever they turn their hand to.” —Conrad Williams, August Derleth and International Horror Guild Award Winner "Weston Ochse has always been a wised-up, clued-in, completely trustworthy writer of high-action fiction that deserved a wider audience, and SEAL Team 666 is his breakthrough book. Here, every story-line is as taut as a gunfighter's nerves, and individual scenes pop like firecrackers. I raced through this novel and when it ended, I wanted more." —Peter Straub, New York Times-bestselling author of In the Night Room "Weston Ochse is perhaps the fiercest and most direct of the latest generation of dark fiction writers. I watched awestruck year by year as the bright candle of his talent grew into a roaring bonfire of brutally honest output, matched only by his deep empathy for the human condition." —Rocky Wood, Bram Stoker award-winning author of Stephen King: A Literary Companion "A wild blend of nail-biting thriller action and out-of-the shadows horror. This is the supernatural thriller at its most dynamic. Perfect!" —Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling-author of Dead of Night and The King of Plagues

Review "This assemblage of short fiction, a novella, and essays puts Ochse's 30 years of military experience to good use.  The adage, 'Write what you know,' is proven here, whether it's a piece on the rigors of basic training or fighting monsters from a rift in the desert of Arizona, each story rings with the sound of truth." - Frank Errington, Top 1% Goodreads Reviewer "Every single story in this collection has been curated with care and all of them will go through you like the ball bearings spit out by a Claymore mine when someone not paying attention steps on it." - Katomic Energy "Every story engages. Every essay or article intensifies. And by the end, one comes to the inescapable conclusion that, although the pieces were written at various times over the past eighteen years; appear here out of chronological order; and form no perceptible sequences of time, place, or landscape, they do in fact create a coherent whole. And at the core of that meta-story, lies a warrior constantly defining and re-defining himself: Weston Ochse." -Collings Notes Reviews for SEAL Team 666:'Weston Ochse has always been a wised-up, clued-in, completely trust worthy writer of high-action fiction that deserved a wider audience, and SEAL Team 666 is his breakthrough book. Here, every story line is as taut as a gunfighter's nerves, and individual scenes pop like firecrackers. I raced through this novel, and when it ended, I wanted more.'' --Peter Straub, New York Times bestselling author''A wild blend of nail-biting thriller action and out-of-the-shadows horror. This is the supernatural thriller at its most dynamic. Perfect!'' --Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author''SEAL Team 666 islike X-Files and Torchwood written by Tom Clancy: ingenious, creepy, and entertaining.'' --Kevin J. Anderson, internationally bestselling author''Even the supernatural has its own division of terrorist. Thank goodness we have our defenders -- SEAL Team 666.'' --Joe R. Lansdale, British Fantasy, Bram Stoker, and Edgar award winning author''Ochse brings both a lively gallows humor to the story and just the right amount of conviction to make his scenarios as creepy.'' --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author WESTON OCHSE (pronounced oaks ) has won the Bram Stoker Award and beennominated for the Pushcart Prize. In addition to his previous SEAL Team666 novels, his work has appeared in comic books and magazines such as"Cemetery Dance" and "Soldier of Fortune". He is a retired U.S. Armyintelligence officer. The only stories he ever told about those times in his life were carefully edited, G-rated anecdotes like one about running over a python when he was in Burma building Bailey-Bailey bridges. He bore his burden alone because that’s what men of his generation did. He died with his stories untold. And maybe that’s one reason why he died so young.I wish my father—who loved to read—could have read this collection of essays and fiction.Weston Ochse is a warrior. He is a humanist. And he is a damn fine writer.I’ve read some fantastic collections of war stories in the past and this one is now in my top five, along with Michael Herr’s DISPATCHES and Anthony Swofford’s JARHEAD.Every single story in this collection has been curated with care and all of them will go through you like the ball bearings spit out by a Claymore mine when someone not paying attention steps on it.“Why is it so hard to be a man?” the protagonist of “Family Man” asks and then he offers up a sacrifice to his family that is simply…heart-stopping. “Family Man” is one of those stories, like “Plastic Soldiers” by WD County, that can never be unread. The essays are just as strong as the fiction, with “Every War Has a Signature Sound” being one of my favorites. Ochse ends the collection with a piece called “Finishing School” that is inspirational and confessional and altogether insightful and a story about warring with your self when it just seems so much easier to quit. But warriors don’t quit.

Another great book by Weston Ochse! He reaches emotional highs and lows in Fubar! Which in my opinion, makes for a great read! This book touched my heart because of the deep, thought provoking subject matter. My favorite parts of the book are actually the authors notes after every story. Weston's Insightful sharing of why he wrote the stories give us, the reader, a peek into what makes Weston Ochse tick. This is a definite must read! Especially if you are connected in any way to the military. But I recommend it for those who may not have military connections, because it opens up a window into that world! Well done!

The stories range from entertaining to hard-hitting, and if you have any respect for our military men and women then there is something for you in this collection. If you haven't already, pick up FUBAR and read it. Be careful once you start, you may have a hard time putting it down.

“Eoin Macken’s writing bristles and prickles with authentic purpose. Kingdom of Stars feels both epic and intimate simultaneously.” Eoghan McDermott, 2FM “I don’t know if I like Eoin Macken. His fabulous face. His Calvin Klein male model contracts. His shimmering six pack. His aquiline jawline. His superb cinematography. His all embracing bravery. His staggeringly successful film and television career. The only respite for the rest of us mere mortals was that at least he couldn’t write novels. Turns out he can. Turns out his punch-drunk love-prose will knock you on your ass. Turns out I hate him.” Terry McMahon, Writer/Director “A wonderful first novel from a new talent: rich, absorbing and gritty. One to watch for the future.” Jim Fitzpatrick, Artist “Raw and honest, a compelling account of growing up as a teenager – an eloquent and descriptive depiction of a young man reflecting on his experiences as he tumbles through his teenage years. Genuinely written from the heart.” Jack Reynor, Actor “Gripping, sensitive and utterly captivating, Kingdom of Scars is a work of deep insight. A riveting read.” Caroline Grace-Cassidy, Writer “Author Eoin Macken perfectly captures the voice – both inner and outer – of a certain generation of Irish youth with his debut novel Kingdom of Scars. Anyone who has ever had a best friend, a first crush, a moment of awareness that they may never fully understand the world they’re a part of – which should be just about everybody – will be able to find themselves in this book.” Rory Cashin, Film Critic About the Book: Sam is a shy, 15-year-old boy navigating two social worlds: the uptight bullies at his all-boys private school and the small uncouth gang in his neighborhood. This gang of five follows the typical teenage-boy pattern; they drink, smoke, cause fights and vandalize property. Sam desperately wants to be accepted, but he soon finds that the only way to gain respect amongst the crew is to fight violence with violence. And it hurts. At school, Sam keeps to his own dream world when he’s not consorting with his best (and only) friend Daniel or getting sent out of class for talking back to his teachers. His stubborn behavior often lands him in meetings with his guidance counselor, the sage Jesuit Don, whose measured wisdom is transmitted to Sam through a haze of constant cigar smoke. When it comes to girls, Sam is lost without Daniel. After hesitantly agreeing to be Daniel’s wingman on a blind date, Sam inadvertently meets the girl of his dreams. Antoinette is perfect: blonde, slender and sexy, and Sam is enamored. On Daniel’s advice, Sam decides to throw a small house party with the intention of losing his virginity to the ‘most beautiful girl in the world’, but Daniel has his own agenda with Antoinette’s best friend and Sam is meanwhile overtaken by fear, anxiety and his first experience with weed. After an awkward attempt to get Antoinette into his parents’ bed, it seems Sam may have ruined his chances. But when he later discovers that Daniel has secretly been dating Antoinette behind his back, Sam learns the real cost and shame of falling in love at the price of friendship. This blow is followed quickly by another — just when Sam feels he’s finally become regarded as part of the neighborhood gang, the boys find a dead body hanging from a tree at their favorite hangout spot. Sam’s absence from this discovery further reinforces his distance from the other boys, and he finds himself once again on the edges, unable to identify with their new found pain and further than ever from being accepted. But being a teenager is all about redemption and recrimination, small events becoming catastrophic, and seemingly huge moments eventually meaning nothing. Through these events that shape a teen, Sam discovers the boundaries of sexuality, friendship, authority, and the possibility of death.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. First books are easy to pick out even if you don't know they ... By Deb Kingdom of Scars is Eoin Macken's first novel. There is all kinds of demographic info and a synopsis of the book above so I won't go into that here. Let's just say I was looking forward to this book with excitement and trepidation. Excitement because, hey, this is as my daughter would say, my celebrity crush's first book. Trepidation because it's his first book. First books are easy to pick out even if you don't know they are the author's first novel. Awkward phrasing, places where the words are just words not part of a flow of story, over use of adjectives and adverbs. Heck, even John Grisham's first novel wasn't all that good. Was there some of that in Kingdom of Scars? Yes, however very little. Honestly I don't believe I would have thought this was a first novel, it doesn't read like one.Macken writes like the photographer that he is, he creates incredibly visual images with his words. The first few chapters are like looking at a series of photographs, beautiful, haunting and each telling a story. That was slightly distracting to me, it seemed that each chapter was a vignette, a compelling story only thinly connected to the others around it. Later chapters, however wove together beautifully into a story. I can't say if the writing changed or I became more involved in the story or if it was some combination of the two. All I can say is I was drawn into the story and couldn't put the book down.My favorite line of the novel is in the prolog. I won't quote it all as it might be a spoiler, but one phrase, "they brandished their middle fingers like weapons." In my opinion this sets the stage for the whole novel. It is starkly visual and hints at the underlying malevolence that permeates much the novel. Anyone who has seen some of the films that Macken has released will know he does subtle malevolence very well, he does it well in prose too. It is however not all dark, there is a scene the middle of the book where Sam expresses the doubts of young men regarding young women. I had to laugh, even at my age I still thought boys weren't driven by the same doubts as girls. I remembered my fifteen year old self thinking those very things. Macken does light just as well as dark. The group of young men in the story seem driven by elements of "Stand by Me" as well as "Lord of the Flies". It is derivative of neither, it stands on it's own merit. It's well worth reading and not just because Eoin Macken, tv star, wrote it. Kingdom of Scars is more than just the novel my celebrity crush wrote, it's a darn good book.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Macken forcibly grabs your attention and your heart. By Ronni Pudding On the face of it Sam is a scowling, belligerent, adolescent with an arrogant gait who'd make you want to cross the road to avoid him. Kingdom of Scars prizes open Sam's menacing facade revealing the complex and surprisingly sensitive workings of a teenage boy's mind as he stumbles down the potholed path of first sexual encounters, negotiates local bullies and struggles, above all else, for the acceptance of his peers.Eoin Macken's vivid prose paints a detailed picture of adolescent life on the outskirts of a pre-mobile phone Dublin. He offers the reader a 'no holds barred' window into the world of a group of seeming rebels without a cause, who vie and buck for attention and standing amongst themselves. Macken forcibly grabs your attention and your heart and leads you on Sam's gripping voyage of self-discovery and his route to coming of age.Men and older boys will relate to this book and women and girls will have their eyes opened by it. This book transported me back to a time when all senses were heightened and my own fumbling mistakes were recalled with both horror and delight. It's a fabulously good read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I was on a train back from an art exhibition in Milan and looking for a good book to read to cut myself off from the ... By chiara tomasi @eoincmacken's #KingdomofScars was a surprise to me. I honestly didn't know who the author was. I was on a train back from an art exhibition in Milan and looking for a good book to read to cut myself off from the annoying voice of the phone addicted girl sitting in front of me. As part of my job I read many children's and YA's books, so - after checking out some feedback on Amazon - I decided to download #kingdomofscars kindle version. As I started reading, being an illustrator and book designer, I immediately visualized the pages of a vivid and well depicted storyboard and I couldn't hear the chatty girl speaking on her phone any longer. I simply couldn't stop reading and I remember of having thought that the train must have been a high speed train because it didn't even occur to me that I had almost reached my destination as I read the unheralded poem that the author wrote as an epilogue. This book is a very powerful time machine that "teleports" grown-up readers back to their teenage past - recent or not. For sure, the most amazing feature of this literary "transporter" is that its realistic and honest prose involves you also physically not only mentally. As the climax increases, you cease to be a simple hologram and teenage emotions overwhelm you. Then you go back to the time when you used to wonder what's on your partner's mind when you are about to do it and you actually feel that undisclosed desire of being kissed, touched and possessed for the very first time. Again.@eoincmacken's Sam is such a complex character that you don't want the book to end so you might have a chance to listen again to his unexpectedly pure and innocent thoughts bravely disguised as silences and introversion. And I used the adverb unexpectedly on purpose because I definitely didn't know that a guy could be so fragile, sensitive, uncertain since very few writers - specially YA ones - are able and willing to provide their female readers with such a candid exploration of the remote corners of male youthful uncertainties and sexual expectations.#kingdomofscars's a blast from a past when others' acceptance and approval are imperatively necessary to you because you still don't know that you already are a valuable human being. What Sam is experiencing is that period of life that we all go through awkwardly, stumbling over ourselves, our fears, our doubts. As a graduate in psychology, @eoincmacken thoroughly unfolds the lines of human soul painting a portrait we can all identify with.Beautiful penmanship, sophisticated writing style, compelling storyline and perfectly drawn characters are the pivotal features of this debut work to me. This book is an extraordinary example of #YA literature. I look forward to reading the second novel by this talented author.ConfessionWhen I particularly like an e-book, I usually feel the need to buy also the paper version and add it to my real library. I couldn't help myself. A couple of days after that trip back from Milan, I received my bright new copy of #kingdomofscars smelling my favorite smell in the world - paper.

PDF Ebook Online Wormhole Moon: An Alien Civilization's Alliance With Earth, by John Williams

“Worm Hole Moon” is a story about two Earth, Space Command astronauts that crash land on a seemingly insignificant moon in a sector of space light years away from Earth. Little do they know, the moon secretly conceals a black hole that is a portal to an alien civilization. “Wormhole Moon” contains many characters that are interesting and engaging. The locations in the book consist of space, various countries on Earth, to include alien planets. The villains in this book consist of not only one alien race but two! Twists and turns abound as John Williams skillfully weaves the stories and locations in and around each other in “Wormhole Moon.” You will not find fluff or word fillers in this book. The plots and story line are credible, well researched and easily understood. The reader will not struggle with the technology or procedural syntax. In fact, the book may even educate the reader on some things they did now about space, military tactics and space travel. Wormhole Moon contains a lot of space technology to include new types of weapons and war tactics in the book. In fact, there are weapons in the book that have yet to be seen in film or television as of the writing of this description. Some of the main characters are of course the two Astronauts, The Chief of Security for the alien planet, Special Operations operators, various commanders and decision makers of all kinds. The book is definitely not all about the business of galactic war. It is laced with plenty of humor and interactions between human and new alien races. The challenges and realities of adding a new species to our planet can be seen throughout various story lines in “Wormhole Moon.” Author John Williams has a very descriptive writing style and he creates word pictures and visual portraits for his readers so they may truly have a reading experience. Although “Worm Hole Moon,” is a Sci-fi novel, it is designed to appeal to those who do not usually read Science fiction. This work is over one hundred thousand words long and will delightfully entertain and engage from the novice Sci-fi reader to even the most persnickety, sci-fi reading veteran for hours.

Wormhole Moon: An Alien Civilization's Alliance With Earth, by John Williams

Review Five Star - Action packed space adventureBy TrishFLReader TOP 1000 REVIEWER on June 8, 2015Format: Kindle Edition Verified PurchaseI really had no idea that I was such a Sci Fi fan until someone suggested that I read "The Martian" sometime last year. This was a game changer for me and I have been devouring books in this genre ever since, alien-filled or not. I loved author John Williams' debut novel, "Wormhole Moon", because it was a non-stop adventure for me that had elements of suspense, romance, and so much more. The story of the interaction, and conflict, between Earth and an alien race after a wormhole is discovered by two wayward astronauts. There isn't much not to like here with the global implications of this discovery. Looking forward to a follow up for sure.

From the Author Writing this book began as a labor of love from the beginning. I was in a season of my life where I was encouraged to take a full inventory of who I was and what abilities that I had. I remember many years ago, I believe in fourth grade; my teacher gave us an assignment to write a story. It had to be one that was original. So I did. It was a short Science Fiction story. I turned my story in for a grade. About a week later all the children got their graded stories back except me. She did not give, in my mind, an adequate answer as to why.   Most kids my age had a toy box. I had, a book box with books about planes, space, animals' books of every kind that my mom bought for me. My mom asked me if a certain book was in my box. I told her no. In fact she asked me several times. Same reply. Apparently my teacher called her to verify. I got my paper back from my teacher with my grade: "A." In essence, my teacher thought that I had plagiarized one of the books I had at home when, in fact, I had not. Fast forward to a year and one half ago, I thought to myself, what if I have been honing my writing skills since forth grade, where would I have been by High School and beyond?     So, that said, I sat down once again to write a compelling story. After many years of being in the aviation industry, having read thousands of books and having had many experiences, I give you: "Wormhole Moon." It is the first of a three book series. "Wormhole Moon" is complete departure in comparison to the previous books that I have written. However, my desire for great research and attention to detail is still very much woven into this book as well. I wanted to create something that Sci-fi enthusiasts would truly enjoy and at the same time, draw in readers who may not necessarily read a Sci-fi novel. In essence, I just wanted to write a great story.I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Thank you for your support and considering my first Sci-fi novel. - John Williams

I have always been a huge Micheal Crichton fan and haven't had the ability to burn through a book since his last work. John Williams does an amazing job of creating some awesome characters and keeping the action flowing. I enjoyed the cultural creations and customs of the three other races. I wish that he would have gone into more depth on the ships and the science behind the way they travel. Perhaps this and other parts were intentionally left out by the author to let the readers creativity brew? Thank you for the awesome read! This was the first time I have ever flown on an international flight and not watched a single movie!

There isn't much not to like here with the global implications of this discovery. Looking forward to a follow up for sure.

The plot centering around an idea of wormhole that is a portal to an alien civilization was really thoughtfully elaborated here and I liked how realistic and well researched it was.The conflict depicted in the story has kept me on my toes the whole time and the characters and their interactions were thoughtfully written. Definitely one of the better SF stories out there that I’ve read lately, I would highly recommend it.

By K.Mager In this first of the series we meet a central cast as they meet each other. Filled with awkward moments and plenty of funny lines, these characters are humans against a terrifying force. As the main characters grow closer through adversity, we are taken into the circle to share. I will continue to read this series as long as it runs. Having read the second, The Rosewood House, the characters continue to grow and the supernatural is unique to the house. Looking forward to number three!

To be fair, while I was reading this book I felt that this book was written for a younger audience since there were some grammatical errors and a lot of repetition and the storyline was really predictable but that didn't stop me from reading the whole book. I found the book to interesting even with the errors and I found it hard to put down after I had been drawn into the book. It took me a few hours to finish but it was well worth it, the ending was repetitivie but interesting nonetheless. Overall, this book was a good, quick read and you should definitely consider reading it.I was able to receive this book in exchange for my honest, unbiased review and I hope that you will consider purchasing a copy after reading my review.~Luv2dance

American Bitch is a divorce, revenge comedy. With Laredo, Texas providing the backdrop, the story chronicles a couple's tumultuous relationship as it crumbles into disunion. Sadie and Jethro are the most popular twosome in town - well to do and handsome -. They complement each other spectacularly well, but then things change...

The alteration is for the worse, when the two try to destroy each other. Jethro seeks revenge after he finds out that Sadie has been unfaithful to him, and she tries to pick on his insecurities when she seeks to move on with her new lover.

The result is an utter undoing but not as expected.

Born in Laredo, Texas in 1958, Raúl Casso is a lawyer and a writer. Other works are underway.

When not writing, Raúl enjoys playing ragtime piano. Happily married to his wife Nahyr, who works hard to allow Raúl the free time to so indulge, Raúl Casso is the father of five boys: Raúl, Alexander, Andreas, Philip, and Sebastian.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Brilliant New Novel By Kingzi Raul Casso has created a full-on masterpiece, on par with Hemingway and Faulkner, interwoven with the modern satire of a Bret Easton Ellis.American Bitch is a robust, affectionate chronicle of one man's journey through the pain of marriage, divorce, infidelity, hypocrisy, lies and desperation. Written with unfailing precision and beauty, American Bitch stakes out new territory different from the writers I noted above to whom Casso could be compared. It’s all at once both insightful and entertaining, edgy and poignant, and grippingly funny. In a lesser author’s hand, the book could’ve become a mangled mess as the layers of estrangement between the main characters unfolds, but the story, as told through Jethro’s unique voice and perspective, reels you in from the very beginning. The quality of the writing and the sincerity of the characters’ struggles to redeem themselves carry the book through to an unexpected conclusion. And woven into the main story are the amusing side characters who give contrasting perspectives on events and enlarge the hectic Tex-Mex canvas that Casso successfully paints. It’s striking that all the novel’s characters, so perfect on the outside, all fail to live up to even the vaguest semblance of the elusive American Dream.I found the novel offers up an intriguing mix of farcical and dry humor, with the book’s true strength being that its small doses manage not to diminish the impact of the novel’s core events. Choice turns of phrase, smart satirical observations, and hyperbolic anecdotes, give the novel an eminent re-readability and high entertainment value.Credit also goes to Casso for crafting a novel that seamlessly merges an unusually informative account of a Texas city’s historical attributes into a powerful, moving piece of fiction. In Casso’s skillful hands, the colorful and complex world of Laredo, a fast-rising Texas border town, from the parochial ranchers to the gossipy society gals, through the several layers thick social strata that comprise what Casso calls the “the raucous” city, springs to life in all of its glorious detail, as he brilliantly uses the town as the central metaphor in the book.Casso’s unique style and ability to articulate the emotions of a relationship’s separation and struggle, render him, more than simply a regional author, but, in my opinion, an author of international scope.A remarkable book that one is not likely to forget, American Bitch may be the defining novel of our generation, and Casso has shown he may be one of the most important authors of the past 50 years.

Back in No Time: The Brion Gysin Reader, by Brion Gysin

From Publishers Weekly Though often associated with the Beats, Gysin, English by birth and Canadian by upbringing, was an idiosyncratic and restless spiritual wanderer, a jack-of-all trades who made innovative contributions to poetry, prose and the visual arts with his inventions such as the cut-up (employed most famously by William Burroughs) and the "Dreammachine," the first art work that one viewed with the eyes closed. (Though it never caught on, Kurt Cobain, among other celebrities, owned one.) But Gysin was never one to exploit his works for prestige or financial gain, and he took such pains with projects like his second, and last, novel, a chronicling of the Beat Hotel (the Paris flophouse they frequented) called The Last Museum, generously excerpted here, that it only appeared posthumously in 1986. This volume contains poems, songs (many have been set to music by saxophonist Steve Lacy), Gysin's screenplay based on Naked Lunch, incidental pieces like his introduction to a cookbook by the Moroccan painter Hamri, aesthetic statements, 18 illustrations, and short stories about his life in Morocco that are rendered piquant by the tones of intrigue and the comfortable proximity Gysin had to Morocco's Muslim culture, back before it became a rite of passage for Beatnik wannabes. This is a valuable book that makes accessible an artist too long considered a cult-eccentric, arguing for an engagement with life in which one grasps constantly for the spiritual in art in a time when frontiers in time, space, and formal experiment lured with their promise of adventure. (Jan.) Forecast: This release fills a crucial gap in the historical record, and should do well on campus as it gets adopted for 20th-century art and lit courses. But it will also attract a broad range of literary readers who have heard of Gysin via Burroughs or Ginsberg but have never seen the work. A good bet for prominent stacking.

Review "This is a valuable book that makes accessible an artist too long considered a cult-eccentric, arguing for an engagement with life in which one grasps constantly for the spiritual in art in a time when frontiers - in time, space, and formal experiment - lured with their promise of adventure . . . This release fills a crucial gap in the historical record." -- Publishers Weekly

Review “When all the secret histories of the last century are finally told, Brion Gysin’s pivotal role as cultural border-crosser, psychic adventurer and aesthetic provocateur will have to be acknowledged, but Jason Weiss’s Back in No Time provides all the evidence anyone should need right now. Back in No Time makes the best case I have ever seen for Gysin’s importance as a writer and theorist continually perched on the razor's edge of innovation.” (Timothy S. Murphy, author of Wising up the Marks: The Amodern William Burroughs)

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Essential reader to the work of a beat generation figurehead By M. Bromberg Gysin's work is so overlooked (and so hard to find) that he's assumed the reputation of a cult-figure within a literary movement his work helped create. Here, together in one volume, are excerpts from his most important writings. "To Master, A Long Goodnight" (a biography of the man who was the basis for Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery classic "Uncle Tom's Cabin"), published in 1946, is included along with his script for Burroughs's "Naked Lunch," written in the 1970s. There's a revealing selection of his cut-ups ("The Third Mind," a Burroughs collaboration); songs, set to music scores by Steve Lacy; as well as gallery notes and art from the 1960s. There are also five chapters from "The Process," the novel that synthesized much of Gysin's philosophy of belief, magic, art, and drugs in the service of self-discovery. Editor Jason Weiss has done a terrific job linking these disparate sources into a coherent whole without leaving the first-time reader feeling as though he were on a guided tour. The book is a great starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the roots of the beat generation.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A great starting point for understanding Gysin By Terry Borst Embracing the totality of Brion Gysin's output and influence was essentially impossible prior to the publication of this book. Weiss's study of Gysin's work and his long friendship with the writer/musician/visionary results pays off: opening the door to creative and intellectual explorations that continue reverberating to this day.

A military unit is thrust back into Paleolithic times with only their guns and portable hardware.Ten soldiers on convoy in Afghanistan suddenly find themselves lost in time. Somehow, they arrived in Earth's Paleolithic Asia. With no idea how they arrived or how to get back, the shock of the event is severe. They discover groups of the similarly displaced: Imperial Romans, Neolithic Europeans, and a small cadre of East Indian peasants. Despite their technological advantage, the soldiers only have ten people, and know no way home. Then two more time travelers arrive from a future far beyond the present. These time travelers may have the means to get back, but they aren't giving it up. In fact, they may have a treacherous agenda of their own, one that may very well lead to the death of the displaced in a harsh and dangerous era. This is a departure from Mr. Williamson's previous oeuvre. But, it's a delightful one. It's a different kind of story with a different kind of purpose, and left me impressed with his versatility. My background includes graduate work in paleoanthropology so it is usually with some amount of dread that I pick up an alternate timeline novel that deals with pre-agricultural hominids. As you can imagine, errors stick out as particularly glaring when you're as close to the subject as I am.Instead, I walked away impressed that an author who I've enjoyed for his guns, diverse characters, and open views (not to mention his sense of humor if you follow him in social media), had put such attention into the details of the science and archaeology of the relevant ancient time period.I found essentially no errors and an impressive amount of clearly carefully researched detail into everything from stature and life history to local species as well. As if that wasn't enough, he even advanced some novel theories about how early Homo sapiens interacted with the world that I found not only interesting, but eminently plausible. This is an author, already appreciated by many for his storytelling, showing new depths that certainly surprised this reader.I've heard the book described as 'slow'. Slower than his other work perhaps, but about appropriate for the amount of work being done. Not to mention, the pacing echoed the travails of the protagonists and I felt did a nice job of bringing us into their world, which was both full of tedium and danger all at once. The characters were also wonderfully diverse, including men and women from multiple ethnicities, in a way that never felt forced but rather crucial to the story. It all makes sense in the end.In short, this book was prehistoric fiction done right. I can't wait to read the next one.

36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Believable Time Travel By Amazon Customer The interactions between the various time traveler groups are completely believable, the story is entertaining, and the characters are well developed. The amount of research and knowledge of the various time periods that each of the individual time traveling groups came from is impressive. His portrayal of low tech survival techniques, paired with believable starting tools for the protagonists, is equally impressive, since it manages to avoid breaking the willing suspension of disbelief. You might need a little luck to get all the right skills in one small group, but it would only require a little luck, as opposed to a deus ex machina. In addition, his portrayal of interactions in a small military "unit" cut off from the US rings true (not surprisingly, given the author's own military background), something that many other authors fail to manage.

31 of 33 people found the following review helpful. A somewhat biased review, since I know Mike. By Dexter aka 3FgBurner In the interest of full disclosure, Mike and I are friends. I got the EARC (Electronic Advance Reader Copy -- see also, "Baen has crack dealers in their Marketing Department") as soon as it came out a few months ago. I scored the hardback a couple of weeks ago, directly from Mike.As other reviewers have said, the pacing is a bit more deliberate than some of Mike's other stuff. I also found the characters a bit tough to track. That said, I did really like this book. I'm keeping track of all my 2015 reads, with a view to next year's Hugo nominations. This has potential. One of the features I really like about MadMike's writing, is that he goes out of his way to know as much as he can about whatever topic he's writing on. Going to the Paleolithic? Let's try a recipe for Caveman Chicken. Going to take an MRAP cross-country? Yes, the durn thing is tippy as hell. This book does not disappoint. I likes me some geek-porn / nerd-porn, I does. It's a much more realistic take on a tried-and-true subject than you usually see. A time trip with finite resources and no resupply is NOT going to be "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". There will be suckage, but then one cannot triumph without conquering suckage. I never deployed, having spent my whole four years in the post-Vietnam doldrums of Fort Sill. I could still mentally see and feel the scenes in this book, thanks to Mike's descriptions. If you haven't read any Williamson before, try this as an introduction.

He was trained in England and spent most of his life working in the realm of physics and applied biology, namely botany and plant physiology. His works, sadly ignored largely by the west, mark some of the greatest achievements of the century. He demonstrated wireless transmission before Marconi and created a number of sensitive measuring devices based on optics which revealed the most micro growth movements of plants. He achieve a magnification factor of some 25,000 times, using equipment he had designed and made, with the help of an illiterate tin smith. This work outlines some of his greatest work, the thin line between living and non-living material. This timely reprint is a testament to a remarkable man whose achievements in science beggar belief to this day. While produced photographically from the original text, it still reproduces a quality book written in the unique style of one of our greatest scientists of yesteryear. That such great works are not only preserved, but republished for a new generation to read and enjoy is a tribute to the publishers. Highly recommended for any reader interested in the fascinating history of the pursuit of knowledge. 5 stars.

Very Difficult By Phil Calandra I chose reading this book as the subject matter appeared very compelling, namely the similarities and contrasts between "living" and "non living substance". However, I was only able to get through a couple of chapters and feel that one would need a very extensive scientific background to understand this book. I gave this book only one star; however, this may reflect my own ignorance rather than a true assessment of this book.
