In this moving and insightful debut novel set along the breathtaking shores of the Great Lakes, a young woman must decide which dreams are worth fighting for, and which roots to keep firmly in place…Sensible and self-reliant, Shelby Meyers knows exactly what she wants. She'll never again depend on her errant mother, Jackie, who abandoned Shelby when she was a baby—and is forever searching for an elusive, glittering life. All Shelby needs is her beautiful, windswept Lake Superior, her loving grandparents, and the treasured-but-struggling family apple orchard she helps run—until a new love, Ryan Chambers, opens her heart to chance, and her eyes to a wider world than she ever imagined. But just as Shelby is looking toward an exciting future, Jackie unexpectedly returns—determined to make up for the past and "help" her daughter get everything she never could. Her confidence shaken, Shelby finds herself at odds with Ryan, and with his wealthy family's overbearing expectations. Now, through wrenching change and sudden loss, Shelby must find a way to see herself, and her mother, in a new light, forge an all-too-fragile understanding—and risk the kind of freedom that brings its own unexpected, enduring rewards…

About the Author After graduating from St. Olaf College, Kerstin March built a career around writing.  During her start as a small town newspaper reporter, and as a public relations professional later on, she always enjoyed bringing out the personal side of news stories.  Kerstin lives in Minnesota with her husband and their three children. When her family isn’t scrambling with work, school, and errands, they can often be found up north, braving ice-cold swims, fish boils, and bear scares on Lake Superior’s shore. By Sharon Michaels I totally enjoyed this book - read it one afternoon because I didn't want to put it down!!!Well-written story that kept my interest from start to finish. Great descriptions of Lake Superior and surrounding areas - I literally felt I was there. Believable likeable characters I found myself rooting for. You add all these elements together and you have an enjoyable book with a happy ending.Family Trees by Kerstin March is the story of a rich man from the big city who meets a head-strong hard working woman from a small town. Both are trying to discover their life’s purpose. Both have strong ties and obligations to their family businesses, whether they want those ties and obligations or not. Their insecurities, regrets and sadness bring them together, but it is their willingness to take risks and forge a new life that will keep them together.Family Trees is about self-discovery, going forward and not being defined by the past. I highly recommend!!!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. elegant and sensual writing By Elizabeth C Cook Loved this book. Follow a mature and intelligent romance that evolves within and rides alongside the larger, realistic drama of life lived in the ominous water and ice of Lake Superior. The story keeps excellent pace with characters that bubble with contagious joy for love, life and laughter. March's writing is elegant and sensual with descriptive passages that provide the reader with alternately the savory and poetic, comical and sanguine. I laughed and cried through the trials and triumphs of the hearty souls and the seasonal whims of the great lake during this three day reading binge. Kudos to this new author. I've already pre-ordered the sequel.

She wove a beautiful tale of loss, love, hope, grief and finding your place in the world-and not once did she delve into the 'corny.' I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this up, but by page 25 I was hooked.Shelby Meyers has built the life she thinks she wants. Surrounded by love on her grandparents orchard, she works tirelessly to help her family. A loss years earlier has caused her to build up walls around herself and her heart.Enter the charismatic and charming Ryan Chambers. One of the country's most 'eligible bachelors' he's looking for the one thing we all seek-home. Not a place to rest your head, but a place to belong and to be loved and feel loved. They come together, naturally and I appreciate the time March took in carving out their relationship: yes the attraction is immediate, but the love and even the lust came later, and by doing this she writes a very real and honest love story. Like any love story, Ryan and Shelby face challenges, some they face head on and others they run from, but March delivers on all fronts. I cried-more than once!- I laughed, and I cheered when these two finally put aside their fears and admitted their love for one another. To be honest, this is one of the best love stories I've read in a long time. Though none of the themes are new, March approaches them with a fresh eye, and gives us a warm and honest story. I look forward to reading more from her, and if we're lucky maybe we'll get some insight into Ryan and Shelby's next chapter.
