Julio, a ten year old bright boy, is the only survivor of his family when the flood of the century killed about five thousand people on Saturday, December 7, 1941 at the northern part of Huaras, Ancash, Peru. About the Author Dorila A. Marting, mother of two, was born in Peru and came to the United States "as an immigrant to the land of freedom and opportunities." For many years, Marting was a correspondent for the Arizona Republic and the Arizona Daily Sun. She received her M.A. from the University of Arizona, and spent the rest of her career teaching. Peruvian Short Stories is her second book.

Linares Julio is an inspirational story of two orphaned Peruvian cousins who through hard work and dedication improve the financial and educational aspects of their lives, as well as their personal well being. Julio, who is much younger than Esperanza, shows great talent for business, is a humanitarian and a people's person. He and Esperanza are sponsored in order to immigrate to the USA where they hold various jobs and attend college part-time. Both of them meet their future spouses and end up owning a classy restaurant called The Friendly Chalet. Their stories move fast and in an ascending motion thanks in part to people who offer them the opportunity to succeed. Julio is a charming novel interspersedwith details of Peruvian and Quechua cultures and it makes for interesting reading. This is Mrs. Marting's fourth book and like all her previous ones, it is not only entertaining but it offers food for thought. I highly recommend it.

Marting, comes through with a riveting saga of ten year old Julio, who was orphaned by the flood of the century on December 7, 1941 in Ancash, Peru. He is rescued by his cousin, Esperanza, also an orphan, who is determined that she and Julio will not only be survivors but excel in their schooling in Lima and obtain their high school diplomas. After many trials and tribulations, the two make it to the USA, the land of opportunity. They do not forget their friends back in Peru and with the help of their American friends, they establish a school for the most needy children. Julio has a heart of gold. Through hard word and perseverance, both Julio and Esperanza, find happiness in their new adopted country.
