The world of Alus is a magical world with a long history. Magic can make the impossible possible with a word or set of gestures, but magic untrained can bring about disaster. In the kingdom of Southwall, a nation long at with the dark magic of the Emperor and his warlocks, schools for wizards were created. The schools were to both help foster new wizards and prevent the dangers of children whose magic could go wild making them a danger to themselves and those around them. White Hall is one of those schools. Katya and Piotr had come to White Hall, the school for wizards, in different ways. Katya's magic had been discovered by her own brother Sebastian, a battle mage, while training to duel wizard's in their tournament. With massive magical potential, the young girl was already a danger to her family and friends. Her magic was so powerful that it threatened to overwhelm her if her emotions got too far out of control. She was a small step away from becoming what every wizard feared becoming, a wilder wizard. Driven to the wizards of White Hall, Katya hopes to prevent her magic from becoming something she can't control. Piotr had the power of a wizard as well, but his abilities covering nature had come easily to the boy. His magic wasn't something he feared and Piotr had already harnessed his magic for several beneficial spells, still young wizards were gathered by the schools both for their protection as well as the need to protect Southwall. Along with his twin, Nicklaus, a fledgling battle mage, Piotr joins other young wizards on their journey to White Hall to become a better wizard. While the rest of the armies of Southwall fight and defend their land south of a great wall built to keep the Dark One and his hordes to the north, the young teens of White Hall study how to control their magic to become wizards and battle mages. Few from outside Southwall have ever had access to the magic of the schools of Southwall, but another student, the dragoness, Cheleya had come with her companion, Kel'lor, to learn from the humans of Southwall. A dragon and her gargoyle protector, the girl was also under the curse of being human now and had come to learn the magic of the humans as well trying to find someone who could help her. No matter their pasts, the students had come and would have to train to become the wizards Southwall needed them to become in order to survive. I was at first a little disappointed that this book does not follow Sebastian and Co; I quickly got over that though. This books continues both Katya's (Sebastian's little sister) and Cheleya's (the dragon mage) stories as well as introducing some new characters. This book starts out introducing two of the new characters (Piotr and Nikolai) and chronologically it picks up a short while after Katya's magic mishap when she gets upset that she can't go with Sebastian on his mission. The story moves along from their trip to White Hall through their training at school and time wise ends close to end Forging New Steel with a Sebastian cameo. This puts most of the best characters in one location for the next book; I am looking forward to a consolidation of story arcs. I am excited for Bas and Cheleya to meet. I really want to see Sebastian learn the dragon magic and the alteration magic. A combination of Sebastian's "heal" spell with alteration magic mixed in would be an elegant way to solve his issues forging a new hollow blade imo but I digress...The new characters are fun and likeable, however, there are too many of them; making the character development slightly stunted and without adding an unreasonable amount of additional pages to the book I don't think that issue could be satisfactorily overcome. Overall the balance between character development and plot progression was good enough that I never felt the urge to skim through any of the book. The other issue I had with this book is Magnus. I can't really tell where the author is taking him. He (Magnus) spends a lot of time saying good things about Sebastian giving the impression that he might have had a significant change of heart concerning his views of battle mages as a whole, but because of his cocky/arrogant attitude, you don't get a good read on if he really is trying to not be a putz, or if it is just a passive aggressive way to make himself look like he is a better person than he is.Overall this book is a good addition to the series. The magical innovation is good, and presents a bunch of new possibilities I can imagine many fun ways to incorporate into future novels, and to the author's credit the editing in this book was much more consistent. I would recommend this book to any fan of the series.

I found White Hall to be a great addition to the Tales of Alus series By Neil Ferguson I found White Hall to be a great addition to the Tales of Alus series, returning to and fleshing out previous characters as well as adding new ones. The climax of the book creates a further depth to the world that gives the writer the chance to extend the series anda way to change the current direction if he feels the need.A great instalment in a great series!
