Everyone deserves a new beginning. But sometimes fate isn't on your side....

Over one short weekend, when Canadian musician Scott Emerson and British children's author Frankie Shaw meet by chance, a profound connection is made. Their homes are thousands of miles apart: Frankie and her children live by the coast of North Norfolk while Scott's roots lie deep in the mountains of British Columbia. Against all advice, they decide to see where this might go.

Over oceans and time zones, they make sacrifices and take risks, discovering along the way new truths about love and family. For the first time in a long while, it seems life could be very good. But fate has a tragic twist in store, one that could destroy all that was hoped for.

Poignant, engrossing and moving, The Turning Point is a novel about the importance of seizing happiness and trusting that love will always find a way.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely wonderful!! :) By kelly How do you write a book review when you are lost for words after reading the book? Well, I guess we will find out soon enough… ahem…Freya North is one of my favourite authors, I would say she is definitely in my top two! I am up to date with all her books so the last two years I have waited patiently (honest) for her next novel to be released. I was not disappointed with “The Way Back Home” and once again with her latest release “The Turning Point.” I was left highly satisfied, so much so that I had to stare at the wall for a few seconds after reading the last page, just to take it all in. How do I even begin to explain how this book made me feel? How do I put into words just the sheer joy of the way Freya writes? Within reading the first few pages, I couldn’t help but smile as the talent of her writing shone through the pages and made me think “yep, that’s why she’s my favourite” The detail that goes into her novels is just incredible, her descriptions of the places they are set in, (this story taking place in both Norfolk and Pemberton, British Columbia) jump off the page and you feel like you become richer with the knowledge of places you have never been before. This novel follows the lives of Frankie and Scott, but you don’t end up just knowing them, you end up knowing their whole family and you don’t just know them, you care about them. You want to know how Frankie’s children, Sam and Annabel, are and what they are up to, you want to know what movies Scott’s doing music for next or if Frankie is any closer to reaching her book deadline. Freya has a way of making you connect with every character you meet. This story stays with you and you feel like Scott and Frankie become a part of your life as you truly get a sense of who they are, how they live and what they mean to each other. I’ve said this before but I feel I have to say it again, I don’t like giving you the whole story in my reviews, you can read what the book is about online and of course on the back or inside of the book. I don’t feel like I could do the book justice if I give you my brief version as we all most likely read things differently. All I can offer is my thoughts that this was such a refreshing book for me, it was a welcome change to what I have been reading lately and it was an absolutely wonderful welcome back Freya North to my bookshelf (In America I only have The Way Back Home and It was getting lonely! )So, if you are looking for a beautifully written, emotional ride that will take your breath away, please pick up a copy and add Freya North to your must read author list! Now, I will sit here and wait for next year! :p http://www.sweetisalwaysinstyle.blogspot.com/p/books-are-always-in-style.html

By KimGM Freya North's the Turning Point starts with a chance meeting--first on the Tube in London and then later in a hotel bar. That chance meeting leads to Frankie (a children's book author) and Scott (a Canadian musician) embarking on what starts as a one-night stand and evolves quickly into a long-distance relationship. It is, quite simply, two people finding the loves of their lives after initial missteps with other people. As they struggle to deal with the logistics and the distance, the doubts and the initial reticence of family and friends, Frankie and Scott throw themselves into the business of loving each other...and their love is intense and rich and beautiful. So many wonderful moments depicted, so many times when their frustration at the distance is palpable. And having been through nearly three years of a long distance relationship when I was in the US and the love of my life was in Sweden, I could relate completely to Frankie's longing to be elsewhere, even when she knew that staying in Norfolk was best for her children.Heart-wrenching, beautifully written and packing an emotional punch that will resonate...the Turning Point is the sort of novel that doesn't leave you. I finished reading it a week ago and I am still thinking about Frankie and Scott. A fantastic novel, Freya North. I can't wait to read your next offering.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Read! By Carolyn M I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I am a huge fan of Freya's work, but whether you've read every one of her novels or this is the first, this is an extraordinary read. Her characters are your best friends. Her story opens your imagination. I went down a road I didn't expect and I adored it. I thought I knew what it was about and that was great, but then when it was over, I realized it was about so much more. Somehow Freya takes the simple and makes it quite remarkable. I can't wait for her next one.

Already born into a family with money, and about to take over fathers empire. She meets the already wealthy Casey, who wants her as his chick. While trying to impress staci, Casey gets his ego bruised. Who do you offer the woman who already has everything money can buy, you don't know she's the " connect" daughter!

I enjoyed it from the beginning until the end. There was plenty of action and plenty of drama. Chris needs his butt dealt with ASAP for all the mess he's caused. That Haitian Cartel is nothing to play with. They have eyes and ears everywhere. I want to say more, but I don't want to give away any details.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Janeiro! Nooo! By Fatima M. LOVED THIS BOOK! I loved Stasi and Casey's relationship, although she had feelings, she made him chase her all the way to Haiti. Marissa and that Chris....he's just a hot mess. If a woman doesn't want you, she doesn't want you. Move on. I liked Javon for Marissa, he's just so laid back. But if Janeiro doesn't make it....waiting patiently for Part 2!

About the Author

Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) is best known for his Cautionary Tales, humorous poems written for children but also relished by adults for their biting wit. But Belloc was also the author of numerous works of non-fiction including The Path to Rome, The Servile State and Europe and Faith.  He served as a Liberal MP from 1906 - 1910 but subsequently became disillusioned by party politics and devoted himself to writing instead.  He was married with five children.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely Delightful By Patrick Odaniel This was considered a minor classic during the early part of the twentieth century. Nothing better has replaced it--we've just gotten stupider. This book is the type of remarkable work that one rarely sees nowadays: it's a geogaphic description of the Thames from its source to the sea and the human history tied up with the river (as well as a debunking of some of the myths of the reformation). This farrago is really a forerunner of the psycho-geography written by Peter Ackroyd (such as his vastly entertaining work, London). A great book.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Another kick ass read by DeLeo By claudette valliere Another great read by Deleo. Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know whats actually in the book. This one starts with Dan Lewis who everyone calls Geezer or OG for Old Guy, strolling down the street in the dark with Deke the McCarty dog. He's bait for a mugger. Of course Nick, Gus and John have Dan it sight and God help anyone who tries to hurt the old guy.Sgt. Dickerson of the Pacific Grove PD asked Nick for help to capture the mugger who's known as The Night Stalker. A mugger who preys on old folks. Of course Nick and his crew jumped in with both feet.Dan hasn't been the same since his soulmate and wife of four decades, Carol, passed. Nick knows Dan's considered suicide and he's doing his best to involve Dan in life as much as he can.Of course he, Gus and John are still using their cartoon characters El Muerto, Payaso and El Kabong and putting what they do on youtube. Since they are all masked no one knows who these three are. Nick never guessed those cartoon characters would still be part of what he does for as long as they have. Those characters have a vast following on youtube. The Night Stalker does try to rob Dan and of course Nick gets his man. Well kills his man. Nick has no problem killing and making it look easy.Nicks home life is great. Rachel is ready to bring Quinn into the world at any time and Jean still wants to follow in Nicks footsteps as a contract killer. Jean and Rachel have their usual home war going on. Nick just laughs at the antics.Nick is in contact with CIA Director Paul Lebrec and he is still in demand by the NSA, the FBI, the CIA and many others in the Govt. Nick is going to be a very busy guy. He also has book signings in Washington State. Those book signing will lead to catching a serial killer, a raid on an ISIS stronghole in the US and a Nick who is suddenly in everyones sights. So begins another kick ass Nick McCarty read. This one has Nick, Rachel, Jean, Gus, Gus's wife Tina, John, Deke, Dan, Paul LeBrec, a Jean who's learning knife throwing taught by Nick, a kid named Sonny, his parents, parents Rachel and Nick don't trust as far as they can throw them, a group of Muslims and the American Flag at Jeans school, an ISIS stronghold in the US, a plan by Nick to take it and its inhabitants out, a US Senator, Sgt. Dickerson, a serial killer, the FBI, a task force headed by an vengeful idiot, a few trips to Nick's Carmel home and the basement, the freezer that needs cleaning out, enemies who just plain disappear, a Nick in uniform one more time, the death of a National Security Advisor, men who take a contract on Nick, a Nick who survives when the contract killers don't, a Quinn who makes an appearance and Nick McCarty and his team who save the day one more time and get it so damned right.Five Stars and then some. Love the Nick and Jean chapters at the end. Seems Quinn is 6'4" to his Dad's 6'0". He's a big guy and a marine. Sonny and Jean are a couple and Rachel is still hell on wheels. Can't wait for the next novel.

By Bill Swann If you like your books to be non-stop action, have incredible characters, witty dialogue, and without a single hint of political correctness, then this book, and author, are for you.If on the other hand, you happen to be a namby-pamby be good to those who hate the US, it's citizens, and our very way of life, do not even consider this book. It would just raise your blood pressure.Author DeLeo write books with characters that have a little different belief system. They believe in justice, not law enforcement. They do so unapologetically and even proudly. They love family which is more a matter of philosophy than blood, and a threat against one is a threat against all, and will be met with overwhelming deadly force. Simply put, another great read.

By Amazon Customer I've always enjoyed the books written by Bernard Lee DeLeo,and this one is no exception. I read for the entertainment value and Cold Blooded IV is entertaining at that. I sure hope Mr . DeLeo writes as fast as his character McCarty does...I'm already waiting for the next book...whatever the series. Mr. DeLeo, Thank you for not being a "politically correct" author who is afraid to tell the real truth.

Maresca Huxley explains the advances in science which increasedindustrial production, improved old technical processes andbrought about new processes. He explains how Descartes,Newton and Leibnitz opened new worlds to mathematicians. There is a good discussion of Tyndall's work on matter, heat and sound. Darwinian theory is well developed asis the work of Bain on the senses and intellect. A Victorian philosophy of science By david Robinson Writing 1n 1887, Huxley outlines the scientific and technological advances of the previous half-century and compares it with what had gone before. In doing so he sets out clearly his philosophy of science. In some details this would need modifying in the light of subsequent discoveries, but his views are still worthy of consideration.

For instance The Common People Of Ancient Rome was written in 1911 and uses the price/wage controls of Diocletion to compare living standards with the ancient Romans.

"A soft breeze fluttered the white, blue, and red Russian flag in front of the U.N. mission. I remember when the Soviet hammer and sickle flew there. I kind of miss the Cold War. But I think it's back."RADIANT ANGELAfter a showdown with the notorious Yemeni terrorist known as The Panther, John Corey has left the Anti-Terrorist Task Force and returned home to New York City, taking a job with the Diplomatic Surveillance Group. Although Corey's new assignment with the DSG-surveilling Russian diplomats working at the U.N. Mission-is thought to be "a quiet end," he is more than happy to be out from under the thumb of the FBI and free from the bureaucracy of office life. But Corey realizes something the U.S. government doesn't: The all-too-real threat of a newly resurgent Russia. When Vasily Petrov, a colonel in the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service posing as a diplomat with the Russian U.N. Mission, mysteriously disappears from a Russian oligarch's party in Southampton, it's up to Corey to track him down. What are the Russians up to and why? Is there a possible nuclear threat, a so-called radiant angel? Will Corey find Petrov and put a stop to whatever he has planned before it's too late? Or will Corey finally be outrun and outsmarted, with America facing the prospect of a crippling attack unlike anything it's ever seen before? Prescient and chilling. DeMille's new novel takes us into the heart of a new Cold War with a clock-ticking plot that has Manhattan in its crosshairs. Please note: Radiant Angel is published in the UK under the title A Quiet End.

John Corey, now working as a federal contract agent with the Diplomatic Surveillance Group, is assigned to watch Petrov. Corey and the DSG know Petrov is with the SVR but they don't know what nefarious purpose has caused him to masquerade as a diplomat. Corey is conducting surveillance with Tess, who claims to be a trainee with aspirations of joining the FBI. Corey isn't quite certain that her claim is truthful. He also has trust issues concerning his wife, which turns into a minor subplot as the story nears its conclusion.Corey has an irreverent attitude that makes him a fun character. He holds some grudges against the CIA over a nasty incident in Yemen. He has more than a few grudges against Islamic terrorists but he's convinced that Russia continues to pose a greater security threat (an opinion that doesn't sit well with the State Department, politicians, or most of the intelligence community). Of course, following the universal law of thriller fiction, Corey is right and everyone else is wrong. The first third of Radiant Angel, setting up the puzzle of what Petrov might be up to, is quite good. The next section, in which the focus shifts to Petrov, some Russian thugs, and a horde of hookers, is standard thriller fare. It moves quickly but the Russians are fairly dull and they're up to the same brand of mischief that has characterized Russian thriller villains for the last half century. The final third brings Corey and Tess back into the picture and the fun resumes.Nelson DeMille kicked the rust off of a reliable formula and put it back in action, creating an unimaginative story that nevertheless conveys a sense of realism. DeMille has an undeniable gift for generating excitement, but Radiant Angel feels like a story I have read many times before. I give it high marks for "fun factor" but a low score for originality.DeMille writes with a good deal of wit. Dialog is particularly enjoyable. Corey is an easy character to like. Those factors and the novel's excitement are all good reasons to enjoy the story, which I did. Still, Radiant Angel's staleness and its predictable ending prevent me from placing it on the top shelf of thriller fiction.

As many other have pointed out, this is not the best work Mr. DeMille has done. This is not the DeMille who brought us Charm School, or Word of Honor, or The General's Daughter. And this is by far the worst John Corey book in the series way below Corey Classics like the The Lions Game and Night Fall. It is not even a match for The Panther which was not my favorite Corey book. If this book was a movie, it would be a straight-to-dvd or made-for-tv production and feels that way. Perhaps the influence of his son who is a screen writer? It is fairly short (not that long pages make a better book), almost like an extended "short story", it feels rushed, and lacks depth of characters and plot. John Corey himself is not himself and feels a little to tried and tired (and this is from someone who loves John). The romantic liaison is out of place and also tired and the unnecessary made-up side plot line about the possible infidelity of Kate Manfield seems like a week argument to allow for the possible attraction and flirting between John and his new much-younger partner. I waited a long time for the latest Corey episode and even pre-ordered the book in anticipation, in the end, I felt like I just watched another installment of the "Die Hard" series with John Corey in the place of Bruce Willis. For now I will go back and re-read the DeMille classics and hope that the next book lives up to its predecessors.

I would rather believe some imposter wrote this than the man who captivated us with so many intelligent top notch titles. What happened? Seriously! I am stunned at the lack of everything we have come to expect from Nelson DeMille. Setting aside the horrible plot-- minor spoiler here-- Kate is just vaguely upset with him? What? WHAT? She doesn't know him by now?... uggh I am so pissed ... this work was obviously rushed. Please Mr. DeMille take your time with the next one. We will still be here for you.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Engaging Read By Jonathon K The title of this book caught my eye, so I gave it a try. I'm glad I did. This was an engaging, enjoyable read. The action was good, the pace flowed well, and I cared for the two main characters. The author has a nice style. The prose drew me in and did not get in the way of the storyline. Not to give away anything, I loved the last line of the book. The storyline it self was clever and well constructed. There were a couple of "near misses" that seemed improbable, but they kept the story going.Proofreading was uniformly excellent.I liked the book and thought it was a good effort. I have to deduct a star, though, for too many mistakes. The protagonist was formerly in the military and was awarded the Medal of Honor for service in Afghanistan. However, the author seemed to get mixed up between Rangers and Special Forces. Military terminology was off as were other details. The Taliban were used as the enemy in Ramadi (the Taliban are in Afghanistan, not Iraq). A man took a mortal .50 cal round but stood for a few moments before slumping down dead. These are examples of seemingly minor mistakes, but they added up to me.On the improbable, there were several times when two good guys with handguns held off a multitude of baddies armed with AK47s.On a side note, I wonder about the Medal of Honor. There are only a handful of living MOH awardees from Afghanistan and Iraq, and none would have been as destitute as the protagonist was described. I think his "hero" bonafides could have been still created with say, a Distinguished Service Cross or even a couple of SIlver Stars.Overall, I liked the book and recommend it. I just think it could have been better with a little more attention to detail.

He combined war stories, spy stuff, human interest and so many more things in this book, that it absolutely is impossible not to find the book extraodinary! There are some scenes that left me horrified, but without those scenes it would be impossible to understand what the book is all about. It is so sad, to realise, that even if this book is a work of fiction, so many of the atrocities that he describes throughout the book, do actually happen somewhere, every day, across the globe! This is a book that will appeal to male and female. It has enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat and enough heart to linger well after you have finished reading it!All I can say is Mr Smith, do not stop writing!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast-paced read! Mason Church is someone you want to read more about! By Alea M. Orr I really enjoyed this novel! Lots of plot twists. The characters are broken enough to make their vida loca seem plausible. I love the military, black ops set up, the political intrigue, the ruthlessness of the cartels and of course the relationship between Mason and Valentina.

Dora, now married to Nick and mother to twins, goes back to work at Nightingale Hospital to support her family and help the war effort while Nick is fighting. Matron and Miss Hanley are still running the hospital and Dora's good friend Helen Dawson is the head Casualty nurse. The VAD had such a strong role in the war effort and here we also meet young volunteer nurses in this story, rather than the student nurses of the past. The Nightingale nurses are not spared the horrors of war as its effects are felt far and near. But, together the realities of life in a war zone bring the nurses together and friendships are forged and previously unknown strengths are discovered.I love the Nightingale stories. This series is my indulgence. It's like a British soap opera and I can't get enough of it. I don't want it to end. Ever!

Donna Douglas captures the life of these amazing women so well By Lincs Reader Although the Nightingales are something of a departure from my usual reading, I really enjoy this series and look forward to each new instalment. Donna Douglas continues to write engaging and dramatic stories, this time the Nightingale Nurses are having to deal with the atrocities of war. Not only nursing the wounded, but also worrying and wondering about their own loved ones, fighting overseas.Dora is the lead character in this story. She's now married but has returned to nursing to help the war effort, and to try to keep herself busy and prevent her from fretting about her husband Nick who is posted overseas. The reader is also introduced to new characters, this time the volunteer nurses; the VADs, rather than the students of previous books in the series. As always, Donna Douglas captures the life of these amazing women so well. I was amazed when I learnt that the author was not a trained nurse, she has certainly done some fabulous research, and Nightingales at War is another wonderful addition to this great series

Johnson Loved all of the Nightengalse series ---- very realistic settings and stories., some with happy ending, some with tragic endings. but all very interesting. I got caught up in the characters, and how even though the had their problems with each other. when it came down to taking care of the wounded, they united. Keeping it on my Kindle to read again the next cold day, when I can sit with a cup of tea.

In the ring, they call him Beast. And the only thing he loves more than pinning his opponent to the mat is trying to get me into his bed. His real name is Caleb Matthews. He's the billionaire son of a Silicon Valley CEO, but for some reason, he likes to spend his time in underground MMA arenas, going toe to toe with some of the deadliest fighters in the world. I know this because I stumbled into one of his matches on accident. Watched him fight. Wanted him, even though I never thought I'd want a guy like him. Cocky. Foul-mouthed. Inked. And now, he's my new stepbrother. But he's not going to let a little detail like that keep him from chasing me around like I'm his next conquest. He thinks it's only a matter of time before I let him wrap those huge, tattooed arms around me and show me what he's got underneath those black fighter's shorts ...and the worst part is, I'm starting to think he might be right. Because even though I'm just trying to have a nice, normal summer before I start college, Caleb keeps drawing me deeper and deeper into his world. And the more I watch him fight, the harder it is to stop thinking about him.

But let me just tell you that this story was actual very nice and very sweet!! The story had a heroine with which you could easily connect and like. And the hero wad an alpha through and through. Sometimes overbearing and rude, but plenty dirty and sexy!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Four Stars! By Marty C. I'm usually not a big fan of stepbrother romances but 'Beast: An MMA Stepbrother Romance' won me over! It's not like other stepbrother romances I've read. I felt like Caleb (aka Beast) really cared for Emma from the very beginning. He was never really mean to her, didn't flaunt other girls around in front of her and was actually kind of sweet to her. And Beast was so hot! No one can fault Emma for not being able to resist him :)

Insightful By Amazon Customer This book was a sweet journey exploring the complex processes of relationships as they are brought into light by the passing of parents. I found it insightful, and multi-dimensional. I was surprised by the depth of understanding that the author clearly explored. I was even more surprised when I found she "wrote" /dictated by sign language, much of the text as her personal health declined. That alone is a great testament to courage and endurance. Applause!!! both for the story and the endurance!

The Family Garden By Christopher DeRosa There is a sense of well being I experienced in moving through this novel; as if the protagonist's feelings were my own and her tempered reactions in discovering her real father, one's that I wish I had in times conflict. The love of plants and gardening, prevalent in the book, mirrored the realities of family life- relationships take work, nurturing, to flourish and life has a rhythm like the seasons in every climate. I was pleased to discover the realism and underlying quiet pain that is the experience when life's twists and unpredictable turns, are turned inward.Well done.

From the Author Moonlight on Butternut Lake was partly inspired by Jane Eyre, one of my favorite 19th-century heroines. I was interested in exploring how a young woman, with no financial or emotional support, would overcome her dark past and find a true "home," one that included love, family and friends. Would she be able to realize her dream to become a nurse and find a community, or would her past make that impossible?  This is the story of Mila Jones and Reid Ford. A very 21st-century love story.

Hamlin I will start by saying this and I am sorry to disappoint because I so enjoyed the other two, this is my least favorite book in the series. With that being said, I did still enjoy this book, just not nearly as much as I did the first two. The main reason it wasn't as good or in my opinion as strong, is the focus wasn't on the town itself but just on a single household within the town. The story revolves around two characters, Reid who we have met before (Walker's brother) and Mila, a girl looking for a fresh start. She arrives to Butternut Lake to work as a home health aid to assist a begrudging and recovering Reid. From there we learn of the troubled past that Mila has been faced with and is leaving behind. Reid for his part has his own demons to battle after falling victim to a horrific car accident. Eventually against most odds they find a way to coexist and learn from one another.Again, overall I enjoyed this book but it lacked the inclusion of the entire town which is why I enjoyed reading these books. There are some great descriptions of the lake that kind of make up for the lack of other characters, but overall I really missed everyone else. If you enjoyed the first two of these, you will enjoy this. Don't expect the small town comradery you enjoyed in the other novels, instead you can expect a story of two people struggling to overcome the odds.

This latest release is a beautiful novel of healing but it is the heartwarming romance between protagonists Mila Jones and Reid Ford that makes it such an outstanding read.Mila desperately needs to put some distance between her and her abusive husband Brandon so a temporary job at a secluded cabin is perfect for her. The only downside is her new patient, Reid, has already scared off two other home health care aides, but she is confident she can handle him. He certainly lives up to his well deserved reputation, but Mila is not intimidated by her ill-tempered patient. Despite her best efforts to coax Reid out of his self-imposed exile, he will not co-operate with her or his concerned brother, Walker. However Mila refuses to concede defeat and slowly, but surely, Reid begins to participate in everyday life. Just as their relationship deepens, Mila’s past comes back to haunt her and threatens to destroy their newfound happiness.Mila’s childhood was anything but happy so it is understandable that she was unable to resist the attention that Brandon showered on her. There were several warning signs that she ignored before they married, but he easily charmed her into overlooking them. It did not take long for her to realize she had made a terrible mistake marrying him, but leaving him was next to impossible. Luckily she discovered a kindred spirit who recognized that Mila was in a very dire situation and she offered her the opportunity to safely escape from Brandon. Although Mila never stops looking over her shoulder, she steadily regains her confidence and she finally begins to trust again.Reid’s childhood was just as unhappy as Mila’s and he found solace in making a success of the boat making business he co-owns with Walker. Before his car accident, Reid was a workaholic whose romantic entanglements were casual and short-lived. In the aftermath of the accident, he refuses to co-operate with his family and he is plagued with PTSD. Everyone tiptoes around him so he is stunned when Mila finally stands up to him. This becomes a turning point in his recovery, but he continues to retreat from her efforts to convince to get treatment for his PTSD. Their relationship deepens as Mila helps him cope with his nightmares and their mutual attraction catches both of them off guard. The relationship between Reid and Mila is very uneasy in the beginning. Although Reid is gruff and reclusive, she instinctively trusts him. She is frustrated by his self-pity and ingratitude and after she calls him on it, he begins to interact with the people in his life. Reid finally takes stock of his life and once he admits it is severely lacking, he decides to make some much needed changes. This coincides with Mila’s ongoing recovery from her abusive marriage and their relationship slowly turns romantic. However, Mila has been less than forthcoming about her past and she does not see how she can possibly have a future with Reid.Moonlight on Butternut Lake is a very touching novel that deals with some serious, true to life issues. Mary McNear handles these difficult topics with a great deal of sensitivity. The resolution of the various story arcs is unhurried and although some parts of the storyline are a little predictable, the novel is still quite enjoyable. The romance between Reid and Mila is sweet and it is such a delight watching them help one another heal the wounds of their respective pasts. This heartfelt addition to The Butternut Trilogy can be read as a standalone, but I heartily recommend the entire series.I received a complimentary copy for review.

The only thing wrong with the book is it's not the type I like very well. Specifically, it's a little too sweet for me. Somehow even the abusive husband plot (which is as prominent in this book as the romance) is light weight. When I bought it, I was looking forward to watching Mila and Reid's relationship evolve. I thought there would be more contentious dialogue that would show it them getting to know each other and changing the way they felt about each other. Instead, there are a few events and then we would be told things felt different afterward.

#18 in the popular and exciting science fiction Liaden Universe®. Clan Korval rebuilds its fortunes on the gritty, semi-anarchic planet of Surebleak. Over a quarter million Liaden Universe® books are in print with an audience that keeps growing!Star-trading Clan Korval—known to Terrans as the Tree-and-Dragon Family and to the locals simply as "the Dragon"—has been convicted of crimes against the homeworld. No matter that one of the "crimes" consisted of saving the elitist planet of Liad from very real internal threats, the Council of Clans wanted Korval heads to roll. Unfortunately for the Council, the Dragon's allies conspired to impose a milder punishment for saving the world: banishment, rather than execution. Now relocated to the free-for-all world of Surebleak, the Dragon is under contract to keep the Port Road open to all traffic, and to back the New Bosses in imposing law and order on a society originally based on larceny and assassination. This modest rustication is going surprisingly well, until Korval discovers that the enemy they'd sought to destroy. . .wasn't quite destroyed, and is more determined than ever to eradicate Korval. While the banishment killed no one initially, many of Korval’s trading allies are spooked, and some are reneging on ancient agreements, leaving the Dragon to make its own way. The clan’s efforts to stealthily recruit new allies is going haywire, and a secret death toll is rising even as the clan’s adherents endure increasing exposure to danger and deceit off-world.To make matters worse, an active portion of Surebleak's native population liked the Old Ways just fine, and are conspiring to take the New Bosses—and the Dragon—down, and are sure they have the firepower and people to do it.The exiled Dragon has to make an urgent choice—accept an alliance with criminals or face down each and every enemy in person, one by one.At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).About Dragon in Exile:"[S]prawling and satisfying. . . . By Barb Life proceeds for Korval Clan on Surebleak, and Dragon in Exile is a tasty set-up for the next few novels. Many new threads are started, but there isn't exactly a climactic scene. Still, some tantalizing hints for the books to come later in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially from having read other Korval novels and stories recently. As always, I wonder how much the authors have plotted ahead in the overarching story arc, and how much they do on a book-by-book basis. (No complaint on that front, just curiosity.) It was particularly interesting to see Kareen (who had mostly seemed like a PITA previously) developed as a much more nuanced character, much as Pat Rin was in an earlier book.Minor quibble: How much is a cantra actually worth? In some books it seems to be a major sum; in others, not so much.I also continue to get a happy grin every time I see a name that is just a sound or spelling change from a current name -- interesting to see how the linguistic changes seem to be progressing throughout the universe. And was the name of the Uncle's ship Vivulonj Prosperu a riff on the old Star Trek, "Live Long and Prosper" motto?

Necessitys Child was a particular favourite. Dragon in Exile is however a problem child - the authors clearly needed to blend some story lines, continue some, start some and cover some different ground. Doing ALL of that in one book means a lot happens in small bits, but as part of the greater whole story arc its patching plaster and filling holes. Nothing is actually resolved, and little is moved forward in any great way, but some seeds for further stories are planted.I did enjoy the opportunity for the older women in the cast to have some empowerment and choices and actions and positive roles to play.In some ways its a lot of short stories and snippets of story blended into one book and I think short changes the readers as a result. Its not an actual story in its own right and its definatley NOT a place for a new reader to start.I look forward to where this book is pointing us for sure, things are happening on so many levels, but please dear authors, don't write a such a fragmented bits and pieces book like this again.

I don't think that it is a book for someone new to the Liaden novels though the author's do try to assist a new reader in the Prologue. But for long-standing fans of this series (one that I have been reading since about 1985), this story was a marvel and a wonder.Korval is now situated on Surebleak and trying to find a place for itself. They are also trying to find their place in the larger galactic community. While they did their best - including leveling parts of Liad - to defeat the Department of the Interior, they were not able to completely eradicate it. The remaining much-diminished Department has set the elimination of Korval as its only focus. And the Department doesn't care about collateral damage.Besides this large outside enemy, they are also dealing with citizens of Surebleak who would like to return things to the way it was before Pat Rin arrived and changed Surebleak to meet his needs. It is easy to see that changing the culture on Surebleak won't be an easy process. This story is told from multiple viewpoints which all weave together to form the whole. Miri and Val Con are key voices but we also hear from Rys, the only Agent of Change besides Val Con who managed to overcome the Department's programming, Quin who represents one of the next generation of Korval, Hazenthull Explorer, one of the Xtrang who are now members of Korval, Kamele Waitley and a few others. Through their eyes, we see what is happening on Surebleak which is going through a major change in society and culture. We catch up with a number of the characters who have been introduced in the earlier books in this series. I loved seeing them again but wish that I could have seen more about Theo, Daav and Aelliana. Those tiny glimpses in the Interludes just whet my appetite for more. I really enjoyed seeing Korval and Surebleak from Kamele Waitley's point of view since we usually don't see that view. I also enjoyed learning more about Kareen and seeing her become a less one-sided character.Fans of the series won't want to miss this addition. New readers will want to read some of the earlier books to find out more about the intriguing characters who have roles in this story.
