New York Times and USA TODAY Bestselling author of Science Fiction, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance brings another action, adventure, and suspense-filled story to transport readers out of this world. Prince Viper d'Rojah, a warrior from the Sarafin cat shifter species, is not happy when he is sent on a special mission by his older brother Vox, King of the Sarafin. The mission is to deliver important documents to the human authorities before kidnapping the sister and grandmother of Vox's mate, Riley. He has handled tougher assignments in his sleep and just wants to get back to finding the traitors trying to kill him and his family! Tina St. Claire was finally happy with her life until her big sister, Riley, suddenly disappeared. Even Grandma Pearl suspected that Riley's ex-employer was hiding something. Determined to find Riley, Tina's research unwittingly leads the danger to her and Grandma Pearl. The unexpected arrival of a strange man causes things to go from bad to worse when he gives her and Grandma Pearl a packet of material he claims is from Riley. Riley had warned Viper that neither her sister nor Grandma Pearl would willingly come with him. Viper couldn't care less whether the females wanted to come or not; he had never failed a mission and wasn't about to start now. Viper soon discovers this mission has turned into the most important one of his life when both he and his cat recognize that Tina is their mate. Now, he has to keep Tina and her gun-toting Grandmother alive. The question is, who is going to save him when both women discover his plans to kidnap them?

After quotes, words life she replied, etc, she would not be capitalized. This was really annoying, and a very amateur mistake. Then, we have missing words, wrong tense, there, their and they're mistaken... se smith is hitting all of my worst pet peeves. These mistakes are so unprofessional and completely avoidable. The cons past grammar...Our heroines have crossed the line to abusive. Viper, in the beginning, absolutely deserved the rock salt, even the poisoning is relatively mild, but it just continues to an unacceptable level. If the roles were reversed, this book would be considered abusive. It started funny, and developed to the point where I thoroughly disliked pearl and tina at times. This double standard of abuse isn't playing with alpha culture in a humorous fashion....honestly, I liked Riley in her book. Her reactions were funny without crossing boundaries. Her acting out, standing up for herself with pepper spray, etc, was done well. Also, the romance had an odd pacing. I struggle to remember one scene that attributed to their character development as a couple.Pros: I have not been a fan of SE Smith's recent releases. Several I deleted without finishing. This book, some of the charm was back. I was glad to see an end to the flashbacks so predominant in her books lately. The book is pretty interesting in how many new, imperfect characters are introduced. Tiny was a wonderful addition to the plot.Would I recommend this book? I honestly don't know. If you liked Riley's book, this is reminiscent of its tone, though it lacks the sexual tension or chemistry between characters (this fate decides they're meant to be kind of thing, no other build up needed). The grammar is frankly bizarrely bad (how often does a writer regress in rhetoric?), and the pacing off. it was entertaining, and I finished it in a couple of hours, as it does catch the attention. I have always believed that saying a book can be excused for lazy editing, or a rougher end product of it isn't from the big publishers is ridiculous. I fervently disagree with this allowance given to these authors. If a high school paper has better polish then a published work that demands money to be read, then we have a problem. Small time publishing, or even self publishing, is not an excuse for lazy or non existent editing. The only time I agree with giving major passes to major mistakes is amateur fan fiction posted online. Rant over.I enjoy SE Smith's writing. She has done interesting ideas. Gracie's Touch, Krac's Firebrand, H'aven, these are some excellent books she's released. Unfortunately, I think this book is a bit of a dud, though it is better than the Ristard one. It feels like the author is trying to rush the product, and she doesn't seem as entranced in the recent books. After this book, I am tentatively removing her from my auto buy list, hopefully temporarily. I would like to see more quality control, and an improvement to her characters before spending money on her books.

I don't like the violence being perpetrated against the heroes for no reason. I might have found it funny when it was a one time deal, but in this book Viper is SHOT, pummeled and poisoned repeatedly by the two lead females. Why is this funny? It's not! Why would the man have any interest in a woman that treated him like that? He wouldn't!Then, there is no transition period between hate and love for this gal. Again, unrealistic, and disappointing. I wanted more interaction and more development of the love story and the background plot.It isn't enough that a guy recognizes his "mate". How about some actual reasons for this guy to love this girl, and vice versa. If it was enough to be insecure and abusive to get a Prince I would have believed in the book a lot more and might be living in a palace myself. Also, if this girl was a virgin I find her initiation unrealistic. Just wanted to mention it but that didn't bother me like the abuse.I think the author needs to slow down a little and get back into the innovative stories and cute dialogue that made me love her books so much previously.I gave this 3 stars because I haven't given up on this author yet and will probably buy her next few books anyway. However, if I am disappointed like this much more that will change. So, please, nicer characters, sweet interaction, attention to plot, etc. I am not asking for much am I? I know this author can do it because of many of her other books. Thanks for listening.

By glouise The first book in this series that I read was Ha'ven's Song which compelled me to pick up the first book in the Dragon Lords series, Abducting Abby which compelled me not only finish the Dragon Lords but to move on to Vox's and Viper's stories. I have enjoyed this entire series from the Dragon Lords to the Curizan Warriors and finally the Sarafin Warriors. Although the heroes are all very alpha and the heroines are not pushovers, which is lovely, each character is an individual and not a cookie cutter version of the one before with a new name. There may be a commonality among the characters but each is unique with their own story to tell. I really like how well SE Smith developed the characters enabling us to understand why they reacted or did the things they did. World building is so so but she gives enough to allow the reader to imagine a different world and what is even nicer is she builds upon the knowledge we have with each book. Each story is woven so that it blends well and intertwines with the story arc as a whole. Now the big question is if I liked these books and the series so much, why the 3 stars. What I can't help but take points off for is grammar, sentence structure and spelling. I am no English major so if I the mistakes I notice are so glaring, I can only imagine the ones I am missing. In the dedication, SE Smith thanks a couple of people for proof reading her manuscripts but I must say whomever is proof reading these books is not up to the job. I don't mean to be harsh but had I spent $16.00 for a printer version as opposed to $4.00 for the kindle version, I would have been furious with all the mistakes especially the ones which are spell check mistakes. Just because spell check tells you it is wrong doesn't mean you should automatically assume the program is right. Examples: there vs their, to vs too, leader vs Lodar (name of character, hello). There is no reason for simple mistakes that someone like me can see to be in a final draft of any book that someone is receiving money for. Viper's Defiant Mate was so bad that I looked to see if it was perhaps one of the first in the series to be published and frankly it is the most recent installment to the series which is shocking to me and why I finally felt compelled to deduct stars for bad editing.Ms Smith, hundreds of people are buying your books and although the money you are receiving is not 100% profit, you should take the time to find someone qualified to edit your manuscripts. Heck, find a retired English teacher who enjoys science fiction/romance and pay her or him in cash under the table. They will get a little extra income and you will have a better product that may increase your sales. Finally as a side note, before I purchased this book I read some of the reviews and almost decided to skip it due to these reviews. So, to set future buyers minds at ease without giving too much away, I did not find Tina and Pearl's actions abusive perhaps over the top but I did not find them shockingly offensive. The part about poisoning which a couple of readers made me think twice about purchasing this book over, I have only one thing to say, look up this product at Amazon. If you found this passage in the book offensive do not read the reviews for the product. IF you find the passage in the book funny, you will find the reviews hilarious.
