When Tosca Ring is seven years old, she abruptly goes on vacation from her home in New York City to Cuernavaca, Mexico with her parents and six siblings during an FBI investigation into her father's Mafia dealings. From there, she is catapulted into a nomadic life marked by secrecy and false identities. Her father's criminality continues, and the family continues to go on vacation, often in the middle of the night, always without warning, through five countries and two continents. As they move, so, too, do Tosca's internal landscapes. Her life becomes a chain of shifting realities, linked by secrets and shaped by growing violence and deceptions. As Tosca grows into young adulthood, she fights back to discover her true identity. The Opposite of Hollywood is based on author Margo Perin's childhood.

By Susan Pena Margo Perin's gripping tale of Tosca Ring and her six siblings growing up with a father who is a professional con man, always on the lam, moving the entire family from New York to Mexico, to Nassau, and ultimately to London, and a mother who fails to intervene, even when he is finally dragged off by Interpol, is a testament to childhood resilience. Her unerring narrative voice makes the reader suspect that the book is more autobiographical than fictitious. If Ms. Perin experienced even half of the craziness and abuse described so convincingly in her debut novel, we can only be grateful that she used the experience, and her considerable skills as a writer, to give us such a good read. Don't miss it! Susan Pena

Our heroine, Tosca, finds a path of truth leading through a childhood maze of lies, deception, neglect. With lyrical prose, perfect plotting, and determined heart, The Opposite of Hollywood sings with cinematic intensity and hope. Highly recommended; joins the canon of other classics such as White Oleander, Catcher in the Rye, or This Boy's Life.

The lives of people we've never met can be full of gripping stories, complete with the daily drama that unfolds in background. Ms. Perin's latest autobiographical novel is an honest and courageous presentation of a search for truth within one's own life. For me, the genre itself is interesting because it differs from a memoir in that the author chose not to claim the story as a 100% accurate presentation of events. That in itself lends more credibility to the story as I find most memoirs to be the author's ideal perception of self. In Perin's novel, names may have been changed, some details of locales and maybe even of events may have been slightly altered, but I'd venture to guess that most of what the author's main character, Tosca experienced throughout the story was largely based on fact and truth.Tosca Ring, is the 4th offspring in a family of 9. Tosca's mother was a movie and opera fanatic and named their children after movie stars and opera singers. The story opens with the Ring family living in NY City and for unknown reasons started taking holiday trips that turned into extended moves. Tosca and her siblings were in a constant state of adjusting to new schools, new rules, new friends and neighbors, all the while never able to disclose anything about her family situation. Her parents were secretive, irresponsible, and ultimately abusive toward their children. On the outside, the Ring family may very well have been perceived as mysterious, intriguing jet setters. However, the dreary and disturbed lives that each of children endured were amplified by the lack of attention and extreme treatment received from their parents. The story spans the most influential years of Tosca's life, from a young age until late teens. As an avid and curious reader I'm of the belief that authors are motivated to create and publish for a multitude of reasons. Perin may have written this novel in order to confront the naked truths of her own life. Beyond pure entertainment, my interpretation of the result was that Ms. Perin found peace by confronting the reality of her life in the process of sharing it with others. A review of the author's accomplishments as an artist, writer, and musician are a testimony to the possibility of overcoming family disfunction.Young adult readers/parents should be warned that some of the passages in this novel contain vulgar language, promiscuous situations, and violence. All of it felt genuine, honest and written with purpose. I came away with a realization that family disfunction and abuse can be a thin layer away from what most of us might see. I also came away reflecting on the resiliency of resourceful and hopeful individuals. Margo Perin - I suspect many readers will identify with Tosca and the lives of her sibs and maybe find peace in the knowledge that they are not alone.

Great debut novel with a fresh angle on shifter stories By krkyle After reading the blurb on the back of this book I was a little hesitant to try the blook as the description was a little dry and boring. With a name like Shift Happens you know it is going to be fun.The blurb on the back of the book does not come close to conveying how well written and enjoyable this book is so ignore it.I found this a great read and I read a lot of paranormal romance. I was starting to find a lot of shifter novels getting similar but this one manages to find a fresh angle. My favourite part is the characters, the heroine has enough depth to her that even when I put the book down in the middle (trust me I wasn't pleased), even several hours later I was thinking about her and what I was going to learn next about her past. Unlike in some novels, the alpha in this story respects the scars left from her past and is willing to take the time and help her through it, rather then his presence being enough to "fix" her. This one is going onto my keeper shelf while I await the next book in the series at which time I will happily re-read this one before diving into the next. If you love Nalini Singh and Kristen Ashley this one is worth a try.

Great new urban fantasy novel from debut author J.C.McKenzie By Charlotte Copper Shift Happens is a wonderful new book from debut author J.C.McKenzieIt's been 70+ years since The Purge - the era in which supernatural beings were exposed to the world. Andrea (Andy) McNelly, SRD (Supernatural Regulatory Division) agent is not your usual shapeshifter. Her special abilities along with her not-so-pleasant past result in the sass and brass she uses to overcome the challenges she must face. (None of which I'll spoil here.)It's not just Andy but the wonderful cast of supporting characters that had me hooked. Blond Norse-god-like werewolf Wick, sinfully handsome (or is that sinful and handsome?) human servant Clint, chiseled-featured Asian vampire Allan, and the citrus & sunshine wereleopard Tristan (meow!)This is the first book in a series planned by Ms McKenzie, and while Shift Happens stands alone on its own, I can't wait for more!!

It's everything a reader would expect in a well written urban fantasy/paranormal romance: action, romance, a hint of humor, sexy werewolves, and a butt-kicking heroine.I can't wait for book two! Andrea is tough, sexy, and witty, and her relationship with Wick, an alpha werewolf, is full of heat.

Childbirth and Rearing in Victorian Times By Dr. Laurence Raw First published in 1863, this is a fascinating account of the Victorian approach to child-rearing. Fans of Dickens' HARD TIMES will find plenty to enjoy in the factually-based analysis of how knowledge should be acquired through "fact, fact and fact": children should look at the world as comprised of a series of tangible phenomena and easily understandable taxonomies. More suggestively, the book uses pre-Freudian psychology to analyze the process of children's adapting to the world outside. It places considerable emphasis on the "perceptive" faculty which is stimulated by every single type of experience - verbal, nonverbal or tactile - and thereby encourages the child to adapt to the world. As they grow up, so children learn to find links between different phenomena and transform them into trains of thought; this is why the factual approach to knowledge acquisition is so significant, as a means of providing the educational building-blocks for constructing such patterns. The book also assumes the presence of a "natural" order of things that exists beyond context specificity - this is something that every child has to learn so as to be able to cope with the world. The perspective is quasi-Darwinian in concept, even though Darwin himself is not mentioned. THE MOTHER'S MANUAL might be a period-piece, but it provides a fascinating piece of sociological enquiry into the manners and mores of a bygone era.

By no means is it too abrupt. She conveys the thoughts of each character with grace and laughter. Well done! One thing I wanted them to last longer. Read the whole series in one day. BEL

It's a solid Ok.Ok, this book had all the pieces but something went wrong with the assembly. Hot alpha male with a brooding personality, check. Hot girl with a traumatic past in need of some love, check. So why just three stars? A few reasons. First, the sex scenes were very tepid. Look some people might say the steam was off the scales but I'm a hardcore erotic romance girl and trust me, when measured against similar books, the sex scenes in this book were briefer and less well described than they could have been. Second, the author tries to build some mystery into the plot surrounding the circumstances of Elias' father's death but the details are very sketchy and sort of randomly placed. My assumption is that the author intends to further develop or conclude the mystery in subsequent books in the series but because it was haphazardly placed in the plot of this book two things happened: One, you didn't really care about the storyline of the mystery. Two, the mystery storyline just doesn't fit, it comes off more as a distraction than anything else. My last source of downgrade for this book is that Elias is a bit too basic for my personal taste. I like the caveman bossy alpha man but I need him to have a little more nuance than Elias had.One final note: It's kind of weird that the author spent time developing the West Bend mystery plot line but left so much unresolved in terms of River's past and what the heck happened with her sister. Just an interesting choice of resource investment, not one that I entirely agree with.

21 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Really enjoyable!! By Danny J I have literally just finished this book and I have to say I have read it start to finish in one sitting and boy I really enjoyed it.This is book 1 in Sabrina Paige's new series - The West Bend Saints. This is Elias Saint and River Andrews story. When we first meet Elias we discover that he's just been medically discharged from the marines after losing a leg in a bombing. He joined the Marines at 17 to escape West End, the small town he grew up in and his less than loving father.River Andrews is a Hollywood darling who on the outside appears to have it all and is portrayed as the perfect rags to riches success. Of course appearances are always deceptive and River carries her scars deep. The night before her wedding to a famous rock star, she comes home to find him with her sister. In her bid to escape everything around her she runs bang straight into Elias...I loved both Elias and River individually and together their chemistry was amazing. Initially these two appear to be worlds apart but their past experiences of growing up in unforgiving small towns and in unforgiving families actually provides the foundation for their growing relationship. I loved how they were both equally giving and were able to help each other fight their issues. While their lust and attraction was instant, you really got the feel for their emotional connection and how it was built up slowly but surely. The banter between the both was great and provided some real humorous touches. The book touches on a lot of difficult topics, such as abuse, both sexual and physical and Elias' disfigurement. While these issues are there, they are by no means the focus of the books and I felt they were just touched upon enough and helped us pull together a picture of River and Elias and how their personalities and choices have been molded by their experiences. If I was to have any grumbles it would be regarding River's self harming as that thread just didn't seem to go anywhere and I wasn't sure it was really needed. This book was a really pleasant surprise in that it had a little bit of everything. Of course there was the romance and sizzling hot sex scenes between River and Elias, but there was also the sub plot surrounding Elias' family. I wont go into it further as I don't like to give away spoilers, but this story line ramped up the mystery side of things and I look forward to discovering more in the future. This is a series and there would appear to be a storyline relating to Elias and his brothers that will run through each book. However, I didn't feel like I'd been left with a cliffy at the end of it as River and Elias certainly get their HEA.I'm really looking forward to the rest of the Saint's brothers books and would happily recommend this book to anyone as I feel this is the start of a great new series. 4.5 stars from me.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ok, not one of her better ones. By Kindle Customer The story seemed rushed and under developed, like she had a page limit, so the relationship didn't develop very well. Also, I feel it was very blase, irresponsible and disrespectful of the author to have characters that are victims of cutting, rape, and PTSD, and then not devote any real time to it. The characters are in denial, or just fine without any therapy because they "fell in love". Reckless. I get it, it's just a romance book, but better not to bring up such deep issues if you can't do it with compassion and respect.

Sweet Sexy Charming read By Reviewer This sweet novella has it all - Sweet, Charming, Sexy read.Ella & Axel are strong, smart, and independent individuals. As a favor, Axel is to secure Ella's safety. Ella comes from a well to do family and has been taken advantage & hurt.Ella's description of Axel says it all, "He makes me laugh and feel safe, he infuriates, and intrigue."Trust plays an important role in life especially in matters of the heart.Love this sweet novella, gives sage advice "giving your heart is your choice. You choose who is good enough to deserve it, and you choose if he is allowed to keep it."

Stars.I seem to have fallen out of love with this authors writing style, either that or it has drastically changed over the last couple of books. I absolutely adored the first few stories in the Unexpected Heroes series, but Following Her even more so than its predecessor Her Hometown Hero felt really stilted and lacking in both story flow and character feeling when I was reading it.Case in point, does any woman want to hear the following from her lovers’ lips whilst they are doing the horizontal tango?”I’m very grateful to get to know you.”The other thing I struggle with, and not just with this book, but in all books, is where the main heroine is a supposedly well-educated and savvy woman, but then goes on to make one stupid decision after another.”You should be smart enough to be afraid.”Or even worse, out and out denial of the facts, and refusing to accept what is blatantly obvious to pretty much everyone else in the book, and Ella was suffering from both, it made her really hard to like or empathise with.Sadly Agent Axel Carlson, read like a man acting how a woman would want him too, and not like a man behaving as a man would do. I struggled to find much of a connection between this pair, and the only real time they really came across as attracted or attached to each other was when Ella knocked him upside the head after mistakenly thinking him an intruder. There are more books due in the Unexpected heroes series, Her Forever Hero is scheduled for release in February 2016, will I read it… I honestly cannot say either way at this point.ARC generously provided via Netgalley, in exchange for the above honest review.

Though this book is a novella, Ms. Anne was able to give her readers a full story that wasn't rushed at all. If you are fan of two opposites finding love, then this quick summer romance read is the book for you. Ella Brooks is a strong-willed, independent and stubborn attorney who has to testify on her former boss after hearing something that she was not supposed to. Being stubborn, she refused the help and protection that her cousin offered so her cousin had to recruit his partner, FBI Agent Axel Carlson to keep an eye on her. As it turns out, Ella was one stubborn lady but luckily for her, Axel is just as stubborn and refuses to leave till the case is over and her safety is no longer a threat. So can a woman and man who are equally stubborn have the walls surrounding their hearts come crashing down? Will Ella be able to testify the truth...that she loves Axel Carlson?Following Her is a great escape for all those romantic addicts who are in a mood for a light, fun, and sweet read!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and as a fan of Melody Anne, she never disappoints with her sweet and lovable stories!!!~Michelle of Four Chicks Flipping Pages

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I kept reading the descriptions before I realized there was no point to them... By Jasmine Murphy This book gave me mixed feelings. The writing was decent, however I felt like it was written by different people. At times, the author was overly descriptive and I thought I was going to drown with the ceaseless and inane descriptions about the character's actions and reasoning. I could barely get through the first half of the book as I was described, in great detail, the chores and plans the Guardians were expected to do without actually being told what the point of the Guardians was. I cannot stress to you how ANNOYING it was to read countless pages of the day to day living the Guardians went through. The fighting was also reported-actually I’m going to leave it at that because that was how it felt like: a report. He swung his arm left and then, doing a complex maneuver that many people would be hard-pressed to replicate, he turned slightly until he was gazing at his opponent on his good side, so that his looks may be better appreciated. He dodged the incoming blow and…and just back and forth, constantly. The repetition made me want to gouge my eyes out. The main character had a big secret that she didn’t want anybody to know and she kept telling people it! It was ridiculous. She would tell somebody something, and then completely forget that she had already told them it. It was like the author lost track of what the reader already knew and thought WE had forgotten. A prime example of this (and when I really had to draw the line) is when one of the character’s mind is read (Don’t worry guys, not really a spoiler). I’m going to rewrite what happened because I can’t remember exactly the words and I can’t directly quote because I no longer have a copy of the book. The servant turned to face him. “I’m looking for a man named David. Lady Katheryn (I don’t know if that’s how you spell her name) sent me to find him and give him a message.” David turned to the mind-reader beside him. Using his abilities, the man was quick to ascertain the truth. “She’s telling the truth. Lady Katherine sent her down here with a message for David.”The servant gasped, “How did you know that?”Because you just said! Why is she shocked that she is telling the truth and that after she says why she is meeting with them, that they know it? also, it’s like the author wants people to be wowed by their abilities but keeps forgetting to check herself. She tells the reader key information but forgets that the other characters would have no real way of knowing this information. It drove me insane. Like many of the characters were omnipotent. Also, I couldn’t help but feel the immaturity of this book. I couldn’t really feel that the main characters were trustworthy enough to guard my house when I went down to the grocery store to grab a jug of milk real quick, much less that they were trained experts who were given the responsibility of safeguarding the kingdom. Its mentioned that this is a coming of age story but i didnt really feel as if anybody was "growing older and wiser". Another point: the contradictions. The characters would say one thing, and then completely act a different way. I think this is mostly really because the characters had cycles, during certain parts of the book they would act one way, and then during others, another. Wash, rinse, repeat. (sorry, that was a laundry joke...) This book had a lot of flaws (A LOT. I mean…), but it also had some potential… I guess. Why not. The descriptions weren’t bad but there were way too many. At times, I was almost able to enjoy it (which is why I thought it had been written by different authors. The story is inconsistent and that’s the real problem). Now, would i read it again? no. definitely not. this story was all over the place and was difficult enough to read the first time. (as my review is confusing, as was this book.) Another reviewer mentioned that it wouldnt have been so bad if not for the price. I agree. If i had paid less (like a dollar or two) i would have been comforted even with the lack of order from this book. would i continue the series? maybe. i could have liked it. it just seemed to be lacking any real "oomph". it didnt make an impression on me and really just served to pass the time. I cannot fully describe (LOL) my feelings on this book but I can say I was disappointed. SIGH.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Good read By Christi Wimsatt This is a well written story. The author does a credible job of world building and character development. I was interested in turning the page and now ant to read the next book in the series. I am thinking that the length of the book allowed for a proper amount of detail to be included. If you like coming of age stories involving magic and swordplay then you will probably enjoy this book.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. great characters By cdavid this is a good first story. I will be watching for the next in the series. I believe most people will enjoy this story.

Retired Delta Force officer Brad Taylor’s exciting new short story features Taskforce operators Knuckles and Decoy, as the two stumble upon an audacious plot when they least expect it. Includes an excerpt of Brad Taylor's latest Pike Logan novel, The Forgotten Soldier, on sale 12/29/2015.  When Taskforce operator Knuckles brings his old friend Decoy, a former teammate from the Navy SEALs, to Lima, Peru, he wonders if he’s made a mistake. Knuckles’ only objective is to assess Decoy’s covert surveillance skills on an orientation deployment, the final step before any recruit is accepted into the extralegal counterterrorist organization known as the Taskforce. Just when Decoy’s wild side threatens to expose their cover as technicians working for the embassy—and derail his chances of becoming a full member of the Taskforce—the two uncover an unexpected piece of intelligence involving the terrorist group, the Shining Path, that causes their mission to go from evaluation to operational. With no backup and a flimsy cover story, Knuckles and Decoy find themselves in murky territory, relying on the help of an untried asset to prevent a devastating attack on countless innocents.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. fully developed story with page-turning action By dch822 I believe Brad Taylor’s Taskforce stories are among the best “shorts” on the market by a noted author – and certainly in the thriller/espionage/action genre there is none better right now. Taylor is on the same level as Dean Koontz and Lee Child in terms of knowing what readers want and delivering it in a fast, exhilarating read.THE RECRUIT is a fantastic story that takes place in Peru and features Knuckles and Decoy in the early stages of Decoy’s training/career with the Taskforce. It’s not necessary to have read anything in the series to enjoy this standalone short – but returning readers will certainly appreciate the backstory and added insights into the relationship between Knuckles and Decoy and their careers as SEALs and Taskforce members. As for the plot, again, Taylor does a wonderful job here – it’s a fast read, but it’s a fully developed story with page-turning action. Knuckles has taken Decoy to Peru for a real-world training mission. They’re practicing developing and maintaining covers – and in this case they are posing as contractors at the American embassy doing work with cellular communications. And of course, they manage to stumble onto something that quickly turns a training mission into a seriously dangerous covert act.No spoilers, but Taylor actually manages to create a seriously great ending for this short. A lot of authors are accused of looking for a quick buck with minimal effort when they release kindle stories in the build-up to the release date for a new novel – but no one will be able to say that with a straight face about THE RECRUIT. This is a very satisfying short read and I’d highly recommend it to thriller/espionage/action fans: 5/5 stars.

I have been reading Brad's books for years now and wait patiently for each new one to be released. This one is fantastic but to short, but that seems to be the case with all of them. Thanks BradDr Ron

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another excellent story from Brad Taylor By L. Cooper Wsrnibf: Pike Logan has one line in this story. It's all Knuckles and Decoy and it's a fast and hard ride. But worth it.This story is a hot of a prequel to the first Pike Logan story and shows us how Decoy became a Taskforce member. If you've read the other excellent adventures from Brad, this is a no-brainer. If you haven't, we'll then...start

Eldritch abominations are invading our world.

Only Michael Bishop and the Facility stand against them.

With none of his cadre at his side, Michael Bishop, Asset of the Facility, awakens in a labyrinth of forsaken darkness with faceless assassins in close pursuit. He has few memories and fewer weapons and is running for his life fighting against inhuman horrors from another world. It seems as if Asset 108will soon be dead, all without remembering his true nature. Then things grow difficult. Soon Michael and his allies are lost in a dark, forbidden city in a world where the stars are bent and strange. He is without any of his reality-twisting technology or upgraded neuralware and is pursued by mad fanatics, worshipers of the tentacled aberrations that plot against the nations of man. Even this is not the greatest danger, however. There are twisted plots between the abominations, schemes of which Michael and his cadre are simply pawns on a vast board. Soon they will take part in an attack that will change the very fate of this entire twisted realm, all in exchange for a whispered oath: a promise of a way home, back to the Rational world. But can the cadre trust the creatures they are bargaining with? Will the technology offered actually be capable of taking them home? And what of the mysterious lost Asset and his cryptic warnings?

In distant worlds beneath strange stars, promises are easily broken, especially ones made by inhuman foes.

A Myriad of Worlds...

This story is the second in the series, The Dossiers of Asset 108, regarding the adventures and trials of Michael Bishop, a man who does not know his nature. It is a story of a shadowed world, a world where creatures of outer darkness are hunted by a faceless organization, the Facility. This series is itself a strand in The Paean of Sundered Dreams, is a multi-genre, universe-spanning array of tales with Lovecraftian themes. Some of the strands of this work are science fiction, some fantasy, and some steampunk, but they share the same horrific universe. They weft and weave together, each leaving breadcrumbs of clues for the next story. Each tale echoes a beating heart of darkness, cackling quietly in the shadows of existence. These stories may be enjoyed as individual series or as part of the Paean in its proper order. If you are a reader who is only interested in Michael Bishop and his adventures, the next in that story is Aberrant Vectors. If, on the other hand, you are the kind of reader who cannot rest until every secret is found, for whom genre is unimportant, and who will travel a wide and vast multiverse to learn things man was not meant to know… Welcome, wayward wanderer.

This was written for you.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Warning: You won't be able to put it down. By DesignGirl This is the follow-up to another of Guillen's novels, Rationality Zero. The characters are amazing, the action is flawless and the monsters leave your skin crawling. If you enjoy science fiction, espionage and Unknowable Things From Beyond The Stars, you're going to love this book. I really want to say more, but to spoil anything would be a crime. Check it out for yourself!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If you like sci-fi with a Lovecraftian flavor and harrowing action, grab this book. By Michael G. Munz J.M. Guillen's The Primary Protocol wastes no time in plunging us back into his eldrich world of technologically augmented agents waging a secret battle with Lovecraftian forces that threaten to overrun our rational realm. The cosmic horror of the Vyriim, introduced in Rationality Zero (the spawn point of this series), have threaded their nightmarish tentacles further into our world, seeking a beachhead, and as The Primary Protocol begins, we--and protagonist Michael Bishop--are already right in the thick of it.This book is one long struggle, and I do mean that in a good way. From the moment Michael wakes to his situation, struggling to remember what's real, to the book's resolution, it's an unending battle for him and his cadre to survive with bodies and minds intact. As a journey through a mysterious, infinite cityscape move from a creepy exploration into a series of chaotic nightmares, the author truly makes the reader feel Michael's point of view on a visceral level. As the story unraveled and the book details each individual struggle with the Vyriim and their forces--mind-scarring psionics fought with technological weapons and the teamwork of Michael's cadre--I could feel the characters' stress. When quiet moments and relative sanctuaries were found, I felt the same relief as the characters.I must point out that this strength of The Primary Protocol is also a slight weakness. Occasionally I did feel a bit exhausted trying to keep track of the descriptions of events and complex technological effects. But then, I usually read late at night when my brain is already tired from the day, so that may also just be my own problem. Nonetheless, I felt it more in this book than I did its predecessor.J.M. Guillen has crafted an intricate world--well, universe(s), really--with detailed visions of how everything works, from technology, to culture, to organizations, to lore. He creates just as much details in his characters. Each member of Michael Bishop's cadre has a role, a manner, and a distinct personality. It's those distinctions that hold the book together even amid the chaos of a breathless battle to survive. This book is a worthy read even if you haven't read the first book in the series, as concepts are introduced in an organic fashion that bring new readers up to speed without putting off those (like me) who are already familiar with things. If you like sci-fi with a Lovecraftian flavor and harrowing action, grab this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well Done, Would Read Again By Dave Well done, cthulu-esque sci fi horror. You need to read Rationality Zero first, but that's easy as it is also quite well done. Looks like this series has a long way to go, as these are just the first chapters in the 'Dossier of Asset 108'

Dragonvein (Book One), by Brian D. Anderson

About the Author Brian D. Anderson was born in 1971, and grew up in the small town of Spanish Fort, AL.. It was through the trials and tribulations of growing up in small town America that he stumbled upon his true calling. Supreme ruler of the world, and history's most beloved Super Villain. For years he scoured the globe for a base of operations. His first choice - an abandoned missile silo in the Mohave Desert - was too far beyond his meager budget of $16.89. And as the owner had a VERY big gun, and Anderson only an empty soda bottle, a violent takeover of the facility was not a prudent course of action. Ultimately, he settled for a tree hut on the Island of Yap where to this day he plans and plots, biding his time until the moment is ripe for his master plan to unfold. And he also writes books. You can learn more at briandanderson.blogspot.com/ or facebook.com/#!/AuthorBrianDAnderson

Story is nothing new, and that is not a bad thing in itself. The road to travel is how it is told, and here it falls short. My main irritation is twofold:- simple story and still in need of continuous intervention. I.e. A good story can begin anywhere, no matter the coincidences, miracles etc., but then should move along a path without any of that. Here the author seems to relish in creating situations which can only be resolved with outside help, not by action of the main character, see below- other gripe is that the characters while flat are still very inconsistent ( see below), the author has a clear picture in mind of where he wants to go, but lacks the means to achieve it except by brute force.I like the scope and the vision of the author and I might try to read another book by him in a few years but for now I will stay clear.******spoiler alert: three situations with outside help spring to mind, twice dragons interfere, once a friend who had been teleported to the world earlier and just so happens to be there...and anyhow if dragons can come to him and they seem to want his presence, why not simply carry him with (on their back or in claws, I mean who cares?)Second example: Girl growing up on the streets, doing everything in a sneaky way to stay alive and from inside a bordello, even killing in cold blood....and then reverting to a giggling untroubled persona who declares love interest in a very ham-handed manner? Come on!

Really good work once again from Brian Anderson By Amazon Customer Really good work once again from Brian Anderson.A deep and interesting first book set in a fantasy world that takes a slightly different tilt on typical fantasy tropes while still retaining echoes of the familiar fantasy themes. The Main character is dropped into a world where making the right decision is not as black and white as is made out in so many fantasy books these days.Editing is top notch and the book is a joy to read. 5 stars

By Kindle Customer Have you ever read a book that you know what will happen long before it ends? I don't enjoy books that are too obvious. This story is a good versus evil plot that is easy to read; but, it has subplot along the way that are surprising.. Author. Brian D. Anderson, has done a masterful job of setting up the Dragonvein series. I have already purchased book two as the ending had me wanting to know more. The characters come to life and are easy to love or hate and it is interesting to watch their interactions with different race. Were elves given the short straw? There is much to learn and I want to see what happens as the magic becomes k nown and so I am sorry for this short review of scattered thoughts but I just can't wait to start book 2. KUDOS Mr. Anderson on a great first book in a series. Don't miss out on a great story. I can recommend this story to all ages and tell you that there is something hear for everyone to enjoy. Until next book...happy reading!

A new adult romance from Entangled's Embrace imprint...Sometimes all a girl needs is a little practice...

It's been twelve months, three days, and eleven hours since accounting student Scarlett Logan made it past a second date. A pitcher of mojitos in hand, she employs her supreme graphing skills to narrow things down to one horrifying explanation. Kissing. Clearly someone needs to teach her how to kiss properly. Like, say, her best friend and roomie, Finn Mackenzie. He's safe, he's convenient, and yeah, maybe just a little gorgeous.

Finn knows exactly why Scarlett's boyfriends are disappearing quickly. Him. Not a single guy she's brought home is nearly good enough. And he'll be damned if he lets some loser give her "kissing lessons." No. He'll do the honors, thank you very much. The moment their lips touch, though, everything turns upside down. But Scarlett deserves the one thing Finn can't give her. And if he doesn't put an end to the sexy little shenanigans, he'll teach Scarlett the hardest lesson of all...heartbreak.

Friends becoming romantically involved. I loved The Finn Factor even more because it felt different than other ones I have read. It had a little bit more unique feel. The thing that I thought is unique about The Finn Factor is the fact that Scarlett and Finn are best friends and have been for four years. Neither of them has been lusting after the other. They have had a solid friendship and both have dated many other people. That’s not to say that subconsciously they fell for eachother early on but neither of them knew that. So you don’t have that pining from one character to the other. It made me really like the book. When they have the “kissing lesson” it’s almost like unlocking a Pandora’s box for them. I like how things play out from that point on.Finn and Scarlet both have issues but the issues are not too heavy. It allows you to keep interest in the book by creating drama for the plot but also let’s you really enjoy the romance.Family is a really strong element of the book, which is also something that I really like to see. We have Scarlett who have parents, that might be a little on the eccentric end but really do love their kids. Then there is Finn who is the caretaker for his sisters, which let’s you see a different side of him. Which also brings in some great side characters.I loved both Scarlet and Finn. Fin definitely has that adorable nerd thing going for him and Scarlet is the artist one who can rock glasses.I loved The Finn Factor and the fact that it has romance but not to heavy on the issues. It’s a great read for when you just need a break and want something fun to make you smile.

Britton Review for Ramblings From This Chick. ramblingsfromthischick.blogspot.comThe Finn Factor is my first Rachel Bailey book. I really love NA books and the friends to lovers trope though, so after reading the blurb for this one I had to read it. I have to say that while this one had some really enjoyable moments, it was also not what I expected at all. I wouldn't say that the blurb is misleading, yet it definitely didn't really touch on what all was going on here. I thought that this book had a lot going on, and none of that had been mentioned in the blurb. When Scarlett begins to notice that her dry spell is going on much longer than she has ever experienced before, she decides that it all leads back to her kissing abilities. Thinking that she must need some help in that department, she tells her roomie and best friend Finn that she is going to find a guy to help her. Though they have always been platonic, Finn can't stand the idea of her turning to anyone else and offers to give her a few lessons himself. But once they cross that line, their friendship is forever changed and soon they are both beginning to think about each other differently. Not wanting to destroy their friendship, they agree to not kiss each other again. The more they try to stay away though, the more they find themselves wanting it to happen again though. But can they take the risk of possibly having a relationship together when it means that they could also lose everything?I think part of my issue here was that I didn't connect with these characters at all. Finn seemed to be off in his own world and almost completely aloof to everything going on. Except when it came to Scarlett dating anyone else, in which he would constantly sabotage them since he felt that they were never good enough. He wanted Scarlett to be happy, yet he never really gave her that chance. He also was hugely against dating her, yet he would then become very protective and possessive. Scarlett was a bit childish for me at times, then at other times she was made out to be wise and smart and almost motherly. Because of Finn's parents dying when he and his sisters were young, he was forced to step into that role and relied on Scarlett's help a lot of the time. The whole thing didn't really seem to fit though, and just never really rang true for me. It was so weird that he would be okay with both of his sisters just dropping out of school to return home while he was trying to finish his PhD after everything that they had all been through. Him and Scarlett basically went from being friends and roomies to a ready made family and full house, all while trying to figure out their feelings for one another. It just seemed like too much going on, and the focus seemed to be more on them interacting with all the family members rather than themselves. The other big issue I had was that they seemed to get over the whole risking the friendship thing relatively easy, but then suddenly the future was a huge issue for them. It was years away and hadn't ever even been thought of before. Rather than just focusing on becoming a couple and making that transition, things got way complicated super quickly and instead of discussing things rationally they both just seemed to give up. I just didn't really get it, and the whole book and relationship just seemed a bit forced. I also didn't understand the teddy bear thing at all, and didn't really get the significance of why she did that for Finn. I just thought it was weird that Scarlett painted them for him, and weird that he had them all hanging in his room. If I ever entered into some twenty-something guy's room to a ton of pictures of teddy bears, I am pretty sure that I would immediately turn around and run away. I get that he kept them because she made them for him, but the whole thing was just odd to me. There were some really heartwarming moments here, and I do think that these two had a great friendship. But overall I never really saw a romantic relationship develop other than a few steamy kisses that seemed to immediately make them view each other differently. I felt like it was told rather than shown, and I wanted to actually see it. This one wasn't what I was hoping for, and ended up falling flat for me.**Complimentary Copy Provided by Publisher**

I didn't really know if this book would keep my interest but it intrigued me enough to give it a try. Glad I did! Besides being hilarious (always a plus) it was cute and very sexy and you can't go wrong with that.Scarlett is the type of MC I love in romance books. She's not pathetic in any way, only adorably innocent when it comes to Finn and her feelings for him. Both of them are actually. I loved how there was this life-changing friendship between Scarlett and Finn for many years before hooking up. I think it made for a more realistic read because they dated other people (and not out of spite) and actually tried to be friends. They became important to each other on a different level before becoming lovers and that's awesome. It means there is a solid foundation for their relationship and it only makes sense when they take the next step. The only two that were surprised were Scarlett and Finn.I thought Finn was adorably funny and sweet. I loved his personality and especially how he was with his two younger sisters. Their relationship was really cute and he was a great big brother. I didn't really like the whole Finn's-parents-are-dead aspect of the story. For some reason I always feel like the author is trying to add unnecessary drama or on the flipside, eliminate a complication from the plot if both parents are dead. But then there are Scarlett's parents who are hilariously hippie and then I think that I'm wrong. They were a riot, especially Scarlett's mother. I about died during the dreaded "sex talk". You will know what I'm talking about when you read the book. It was freaking hilarious. This book wasn't erotic really, but it was pretty sexy. There are a couple of sex scenes, but nothing that should make you blush like a virgin unless you are one. I thought they were well-written, like the entire book, and pretty steamy. Always a good thing. This was a quick read with all the elements that I like in a NA romance. Relatable characters, humor, passion and friendship. I definitely recommend it and look forward to more books from this author.

Short n sweet By My2Cents A clean western romance of Finn stepping out of his "labeled" role outlaw and Gabrielle stepping out of her role "sheriff's dutiful daughter" to dare to dream of finding a life and love. This a quick read and short n sweet.
