The action begins as soon as you read the first sentence in chapter one. Two explorers run for their life as a pterodactyl threatens from above. And while the novel contains its share of human/dinosaur encounters, the web of characters' interaction really solidified the story for me.The basic plot: An earthquake opens an unexplored region in Patagonia, South America. A corporation in hopes of exploiting its natural resources employs a Cryptozoologist, who is also a professor of zoology, and his associates as a cover for their covert exploration. Joining the University crew are eight mercenaries (Redwater) sent in for protection.Hatchell does a good job juggling the fourteen personalities of the exploration party, and had me care genuinely caring for a few. The dinosaur action frames the internal conflicts within the University crew as well as those shared with the Redwater bunch. The science used in the novel is plausible, which adds a lot to my personal entertainment. The story headed for a climatic finish, and just when I thought I could stop and breathe a sigh of relief, I had to do a double take. Well done, Mr. Hatchell. The epilogue reads like a camera narrowly focused on a scene that slowly widens the view. From there we get a glimpse of the bigger picture, and we learn the secret of the Lost World of Patagonia.

I pored over dino books as a kid, watched The Land of the Lost every Saturday morning, and I guess I never got over it when I grew up. The Lost World of Patagonia by Dane Hatchell is an action-packed dino-thriller that honors the the “lost world” trope in all its glory. If you like action, this book is for you. The story starts with two men desperately fleeing across jungle territory. Everything is trying to kill them: the terrain, the vegetation, and of course, the monstrous flying lizard that wants to eat them. The information they are able to send back to their base, and the video taken by their drone, sets the stage for the rest of the tale. The first few chapters should be warning enough: Don’t get attached to anyone.Because of the high body count, the book has a lot of characters. It’s also a short read, so there’s not a lot of time to develop every single one of them. In many cases, it’s not necessary because we know dino chow when we see it. The cryptozoology team from the University are interesting people with enough group dynamics to keep their interactions interesting. Add in the security team, and it shook things up. One touch I particularly liked were the friendships between the two groups that were forged on the trip. I also enjoyed the glimpse into Hindu mythology. I know almost nothing about that, and getting it from Natasha’s perspective sparked my interest.I think the author missed an opportunity for conflict with the two women on the expedition: Natasha and Susan. There is a conflict brewing between them, and there’s just no way that tension wouldn’t have spilled over into an ice-cold war between the alpha female and the upstart. With the reality-TV references dropped into the book here and there, I was expecting the women to go after each other, but it never happened. The Lost World of Patagonia isn’t high fiction. It’s an action novel, meant to entertain. It does a fine job of mixing action and characterization with plenty of pop-culture references to anchor it in the present. The action is great, the fantasy of the lost world is fun, and hey, dinosaurs! I did see a number of typos, enough over my acceptable threshold to warrant mentioning, but I see that as the publisher's issue, not the author's. (Note: the author commented to say that the publisher is uploading a new edit to fix the problem, so this won't be an issue for future readers.) The science in the novel is touched on without going too deep, and while my science-brain wanted to run out and check facts, the other half said, “It’s a story, I should really just relax.”So relax, grab a copy and enjoy the departure into a land run amok with dinosaurs, big guns and nail-biting tension. Prepare to be thrilled and entertained.I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Action packed By Pat With the flood of books out there because of online merchants many books tend to disappoint. This book did not do that for me. It hit the ground running. Which is my kind of book! But don’t worry, it wasn’t all action all the time. The author had an even level of action to go along with his low key character development moments. It lagged a little in the middle, but by then was I already hooked and enjoyed it to the end, which was actually and unexpected and pleasant twist. I saw a lot of myself in Alex. That doesn’t happen often.
