Staughton Edelheit seems to be getting better with each book she writes, and perhaps that is just because the characters continue to develop and grow with each passing installment. While it isn't a constant cast, the reprised roles and cameos make for an enjoyable read for loyal followers of this master of mystery. This book was a bold new choice, revealing quite a bit right in the beginning, leaving me wondering how she'd be able to surprise me this time around. However, as always, Edelheit twisted this plot into an impossible Shakespearean pretzel, with mistaken identities galore, buried secrets, and a swagger to every page that left me laughing and smirking from top to bottom. I think the mixture of beautiful writing, innuendo, and whip-smart dialogue makes these books easy to fly through, as the conversations are natural, the interactions are believable, and the mysteries seem real. The fact that Samantha always finds herself in these predicaments is a bit unbelievable (a bit like Murder She Wrote....), but that's part of the charm. We always know that she will get herself backed into a corner, where Edelheit will masterfully write her out from. Each new book in the series impresses me more, but this one took more risks than usual - and I believe they paid off.

Clay gives her a vague message about an insurance investigator she is supposed to help out. With limited information Sam is unsure who she is helping and how to contact them.Clay leaves Tony with Samantha and the elderly trio to work on this case, and to keep Sam safe. But both Clay and Sam start having second thoughts about who is going to protect Tony from Sam. He is quite the charmer when Clay’s away.My favorite part of the book is when Tony, Sam, and the ladies are canoeing at night, hoping to investigate an old rental Samantha had 10 years ago. I can visualize the two jumping around to get away from the critter in the canoe, while two more are arguing about how to paddle. And Sam is desperately trying to calm the first two, then accidentally clobbered with a canoe paddle.

By Kristin Schwab Samantha Jamison is an author who writes mystery novels about mysteries she solves in her real life. Too Close For Comfort is book nine in this series and the first one I have read. It works well as a standalone novel and I did not feel I was missing any background information having not read the first eight books. That aside though this book definitely made me want to read the rest of the series!Samantha works on a team with three old ladies and a young man to solve a decade old mystery she is somehow involved in. The plot moves very quickly as they investigate possible insurance fraud, murder, and a ransom note for her own kidnapping. I loved that the chapters were short and really kept the story moving. Too Close For Comfort is nearly impossible to put down, it is full of twists and turns that keep you wanting to know what happens next.
