Meyer lebt bis zu seiner späten Hochzeit - 1875 im Alter von 50 Jahren - mit seiner Schwester Betsy zusammen, die ihm Beraterin und Sekretärin ist. Er schwankt zwischen der deutschen und der französischen Sprache, übersetzt umfangreich in beide Richtungen und schreibt schließlich auf Deutsch einen Roman und zehn Novellen, die zu den wichtigsten Texten aus der Schweiz des 19. Jahrhunderts zählen. 1898 stirbt Conrad Ferdinand Meyer in Kilchberg bei Zürich nach langer Krankheit in schwerer Depression.

About the Author C.F. Meyer wurde am 11. Oktober 1825 in Zürich geboren. Er entstammt einer Patrizierfamilie. Die Mutter beging Selbstmord. Meyer studierte Geschichte, Philologie und Malerei. Unter dem Eindruck des Krieges 1870/71 entschied er sich für die deutsche Sprache zum Schreiben. Meyer kam wegen einer Geisteskrankheit 1852 und 1892 in eine Nervenheilanstalt. Er starb 1898 in Kilchberg. Der nebenJeremias GotthelfundGottfried Kellerbedeutendste Schweizer Erzähler und Lyriker des 19. Jahrhunderts schrieb außerordentlich plastische symbolhafte Lyrik und sehr einfühlsame historische Romane und Novellen.

King Henry in a rash moment appoints his ally and friend, Thomas a Beckett to the powerful position of Archbishop of Canterbury, though warned by Beckett that this might end badly. The King wanted to control the justice system and to take Church prerogative over certain judicial decisions away from ecclesiastical authority. He thought he could manipulate the Church through Beckett, his friend. But Beckett becomes a true, sincere believer and this sets the stage for a horrifying tragedy. There is also a story of Thomas' daughter whose death is precipitated by King Henry's pursuit of her. The style of the book is very poetic and lyrical. It is hard to put down and to me more powerful than the movie, "Murder in the Cathedral".
