Charlie, the proud hero of this strong and gripping story, is known to his fellow truckers, loggers, and fishermen as Hawk. His father, a full-blooded Hupok, taught him his Indian heritage; his Scots-Irish mother gave him a lifelong love of reading. He feels connected to both roots, but he is most himself when he’s by himself, out in the forest, on the banks or in the flow of his beloved Klamath River. The language in this novel is lush and romantic. Lots of thoughtful philosophy is verbalized in internal thoughts and stream of consciousness. In the mix we are treated to solid information on fly fishing, trucking, logging, the marijuana industry, and most of all the ecology of the forests and rivers of the California far north, a land that still enjoys wildness.

I learned about the beauty of the Klamath River area, the passion for fly fishing and the heritage of the Hupok Indians. The Author puts the reader on the Klamath River, and I have added to my bucket list.

You will know the Hawk better than a brother and feel his passion derived from his Hupok heritage.Dee paints picture after picture of the mountains, the flora and the Klamath River. Its like being there beside Charlie as his life unfolds.

In the summer of 1985, fifteen-year-old Sam Crowhurst discovers an old abandoned cinema that screens movies made by ghosts, for ghosts. Sam, along with his friends, Emma and David, find themselves drawn into a world where the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Lon Chaney and Theda Bara are still making pictures; where Harold Lloyd and John Belushi team up for roustabout comedies, and Karloff and Lugosi appear in films scripted by Edgar Allan Poe. Sam comes to learn the mysteries of the Electric cinema and his part to play in its long and strange history. THE ELECTRIC is about movies, ghosts, and that ephemeral moment in all of our lives, childhood. 'Eloquent, shimmering writing unfurls a haunting story of childhood, grief and obsession' – Simon Clark 'I adored every line. I can’t recommend it highly enough... Book of the Year!' - The Eloquent Page ‘The Electric is an impressive first novel. Andrew David Barker’s style is whimsical and nostalgic, and the work reads like the haziest recollections of a childhood long since gone.’ - Starburst Magazine ‘The Electric is more than a book – just as its namesake is more than a cinema – it’s an experience to dive into and wallow in. It’s a link to the past and a way to think about what’s really important about life. Its heart beats beautiful pulses of nostalgia and grief, but it is full of affirmation too: the joy of discovery; the value of insight; the depths of friendship, love and family ties, and the powerful cement of a shared experience.’ - Geek Syndicate

I picked up a copy of this at last year's Edgelit, after many people had recommend it to me. And I can see why - The Electric is a wonderfully written supernatural coming of age story, about a group of three teenagers who find a strange, abandoned cinema near their home town. But despite being long shutdown, there still seem to be films shown at The Electric, and to a very niche audience...The book genuinely captures the feeling of being a teenager, on the cusp of adulthood, and all that that entails. In tone, this is similar to Stephen King's The Body or the work of Ray Bradbury. The author's love of cinema really comes across as well, although you don't need to be a film buff to thoroughly enjoy a book as good as this. The only minor irritant I had with it was that sometimes the scares associated with the supernatural elements of the plot seemed a bit nebulous, but this is one of those stories that isn't really about the ghosts anyway but about growing up, friendship and the pain of nostalgia. And, like all the best movies, it's a bit of a tear-jerker as well. Recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Electric quality By Andy Angel Earlier this year I met up with Alex Davis, the publisher and editor of Boo Books, at a comic fair in Sheffield. During our chat he mentioned a book that was going to be published by his press in the near future, which was about a cinema showing films for ghosts made by ghosts. I must say I was intrigued by the premise and looked forward to the day I could get my hands on a copy. That day came last Saturday, and believe me when I say it was worth the wait. The story plays out over the last week/weekend of the school summer holidays in 1985, and starts with the lead character Sam Crowhurst cycling by the river after saying goodbye to his friends David and Emma. Sam is still getting over the death of his father, as is his mother, which is why he is in no rush to get home. While meandering by the river Sam comes across an old shack with a bit of an old movie poster in it. The shack leads to a path which leads inevitably, to The Electric, an abandoned cinema. Though it is deserted and nigh on derelict Sam feels drawn to it and sets off to explore. What he, and his friends when he fetches them to see it the next day, will find at The Electric will change them all. I can't say too much about the plot as it may well spoil the reading experience of this quite wonderful book, but the general gist is that there are ghosts in The Electric and they are watching films that were never made, starring actors from different eras of cinema. There is a magic on the screen but also, there is a magic here in the printed word. The Electric is, at heart, a ghost story, but more chilling than horror in style. It is also, though, a coming of age tale. The three lead characters are all fifteen years old, approaching the last year of school and on the threshold between childhood and adulthood. Two of them have lost a parent so their is grief and sorrow thrown into the mix of teenage emotions. I thought I had the general idea of where the story was going to end up but I'm not ashamed to say I was only partly right. There were two scenes at the end that. I honestly believe will stay with me for a very long time, and one sentence that actually brought tears to my eyes. On this showing, Andrew David Barker is one to watch for the future, an author with a writing style that draws you into the book and into the story knowing you are in safe hands but not sure what will be round the next corner. The book reviewed is a limited edition hardback (98/150) but is also available as a kindle edition. I bought the copy myself so feel justified in giving it 10/10 for both the story and the physical book itself. Andrew David Barker and Boo Books (Alex Davis) - remember those names, you'll be hearing more from both of them in the future.

By David Dubrow Andrew David Barker’s novel The Electric isn’t really a horror story. It has ghosts, to be sure, but if you’re looking for creepy, chilling frights, look elsewhere…but only after you’ve read The Electric. This is an extraordinary book, a beautiful tale of loss, of teenage alienation and filmmaking and what it means to not just create art, but to want to create art. An urge that sets the drawing hand to shaking and lights the imagination on fire.As enjoyable as it is, The Electric doesn’t lack flaws. Awkward phrasing and run-on sentences created some stumbling blocks; at times, I found myself having to re-read certain passages to divine their meaning. My other concern was the complete lack of an antagonist. Whenever one threatens to thwart protagonist Sam Crowhurst, it fades away quickly as a non-event. This presented a feeling of safety in the text, an assurance of inevitability that everything would indeed play out as required, and hence eliminated the necessary dramatic element of tension.Despite this, the novel is a book to be drawn into, one that keeps you turning the pages. The love triangle of Emma, Sam, and David was realistically drawn with the ins and outs of young teenage infatuation. Sam’s loss of his father and subsequent alienation from his mother in the wake of terrible grief also strikes home, very keenly. These are real people, all of them, including Mean Stare Mandrake.Barker’s love of celluloid animates the text, giving what might have been a ho-hum haunting element true depth and character. His knowledge of Bogie’s films, of Jean Harlow and Peter Lorre and other classic film greats is breathtaking in that he doesn’t just describe how they were, but shows you what they might be and do and think after they’ve gone.Emotional without being maudlin, The Electric gives us glimpses of the world beyond death, and some of death’s landscape is quite disturbing. Some spirits rest and some don’t, and the ones who don’t might show up in a dilapidated cinema one day. If you’re not lucky enough to stumble upon one in your daily travels, read The Electric instead. You’ll be glad you did.(Review originally published at Ginger Nuts of Horror: http://gingernutsofhorror.com/4/post/2015/10/the-electric-by-andrew-david-barker.html)

Awesome, beautiful, sensual, steamy and tremendous storyline. The protagonists Alessandro and Eve, Valentino and Carla was there for each other's Don't forget the twist and turn. I don't want to give the plot away so please read. Thanks Myra keep it coming

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Disurbed By Amazon Customer This book left me confused. I completely understand why Eve had an attitude, but come on, she was way too over the top. Just mean to mean. Why kick him out of the delivery room? Why not listen when he tried to tell her about his messed up situation? Why did she listen to his brother, who she clearly just met for the first time? Had it been me, I would have left her alone and just paid the child support. No one deserves to be treated like this.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ok By Jen I like this because Eve was a fireball and it such a cute love story. But then it also give you that doubt you must know who your with before things gets too complicated because she fell in love with Alessandro before she even knew he had a secret. And I live that reading the book in the beginning of the chapters there was no indication that he had a secret which gave it a twistBeautiful ending

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Easy Read By Kenneth R. Velten I had never read any of George Henty's works before. Yes they are aimed at young men but include a level of detail about places and events not normally covered by current fiction. You can read this quickly and do not worry about inappropriate violence or sex. This book covers the Crimean War about which most Americans only know of the Charge of the Light Brigade. This book details the challenges of military camp life during the war.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Historical fiction By N. Foster The Crimean War and the incompetence of the British officer corps is well documented in this work of historical fiction. It was the last British war in which totally inexperienced men could be commissioned because of civilian ranking or wealth. It was the beginning of a much better hospital corps, and the conflict in which Florence Nightingale was made famous. The exploits Jack Archer are very unlikely, but demonstrate some of the requirements that were made on midshipmen in the days when ships were made of wood and men of steel.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ok for adults, better for young teen readers. By A. Franklin Adams Hmmm... I read the whole thing, but every once in a while I thought about dumping it. It's a story of a young (sixteen, I think) man's adventures serving in the British army in the1800's in the Crimean War. It's mostly interesting, to an adult, as a study of the society and living conditions of the time. The plot is rather simplistic: the hero, Jack Archer, gets into a series of adventures which he and his companions manage to survive mostly by Jack's inventiveness, fighting skills, and luck. I think a young teenager would be the best target audience because of the adventures. However, the author included a lot of information about the movements of the various units of the armies involved in each of the battles, none of which information impacted the story. Those parts can be skimmed though until the plot takes up again. Language and actions of the story are totally clean. I'd have no problem having my grandchildren read this.

From the Author Book 3 was a bit of a turning point in the series for me. Shadow Moon was originally made to be a short story, but everyone that I gave it too wanted more of what was going on. So I made it longer and told the story of Vargas, who was also on the ship, but no one was originally supposed to know. It was going to be its own short story, but it felt right to tell them side by side. Anyway, book 3 was the story that I have been thinking about since the very first thought of the Cypher Theorem series of where the story was going to start. I obviously opted for a different start point, but still, I knew this book was going to be exactly what I wanted, and it turned out even better than I had hoped.

About the Author Welcome to my author page, and thank you for coming! My whole life I had a large imagination. When I played, with my Legos or running around outside with my friends, it wasn't just playing. I was in a different place, I was making worlds. I would dream up stories and settings, where I would normally be the lead, or at least be looking through their eyes. Playing video games was a normalcy for the escape into some uncharted and untold world where adventure awaited, which fueled my own creations.Insomnia had been a problem for me most of my life. This was another area that I was able to fill the space with waking dreams, praying that I would be able to get to sleep. It wasn't till I met my wife in July 2011 that I really started to contemplate what I wanted to do with my life. She was able to show me how happy I could be, just by coming into my life. So I figured that I could, and should, do that for my professional life.I started to read more books. I had been a visual entertainment consumer for much of my life, even though most of my gaming consisted of role playing games, of a heavily text base nature. Not having the visual feedback was a different feel. I liked it.It wasn't until after reading a few self-help books that I started contemplating what made me happy and how I might be able to turn that into a career. In August of 2012 I had a long conversation with my wife, who was supportive of the idea, and I started to write.Want to see more, come to my website for more at markbrandonpowell.comWant to get emailed instead, sign up now and I will email updates to you!Just copy and past in to a browser:MarkBrandonPowell.com/mailinglist

Things are looking up.For the first time in what feels like years, October "Toby" Daye has been able to pause long enough to take a breath and look at her life -- and she likes what she sees. She has friends. She has allies. She has a squire to train and a King of Cats to love, and maybe, just maybe, she can let her guard down for a change.Or not. When Queen Windermere's seneschal is elf-shot and thrown into an enchanted sleep by agents from the neighboring Kingdom of Silences, Toby finds herself in a role she never expected to play: that of a diplomat. She must travel to Portland, Oregon, to convince King Rhys of Silences not to go to war against the Mists. But nothing is that simple, and what October finds in Silences is worse than she would ever have imagined. How far will Toby go when lives are on the line, and when allies both old and new are threatened by a force she had never expected to face again? How much is October willing to give up, and how much is she willing to change? In Faerie, what's past is never really gone. It's just waiting for an opportunity to pounce. A Red-Rose Chain is the ninth installment in Seanan McGuire's urban fantasy October "Toby" Daye series.

Having just finished and being pretty much as exhausted as I've ever been after a full night of reading, this might be less than coherent. But I couldn't wait to give this book 5 stars. I think it's the best of the series. I didn't expect it would be; the last book was very strong, as was the one before that, and the whole series has been fantastic (obviously, or I wouldn't have read all night long). I thought that there wasn't much hope that book nine- NINE!- of a series could be as strong as the earlier books. That has not been my experience, particularly in this genre. But it was. The tension of this book hit me in the stomach right from the start and just never.let.up. It's perfectly paced. I was scared for the characters in a way that had me actually need to close my Kindle and take a break to give my emotions some release! I loved the plot, I loved the new characters and the evolution of the old ones. Silences is fascinating. There were a number of lines that made me laugh out loud and wake up my cat, particularly the idea of beta-testing a war. Loved that. The relationship between Toby and Tybalt is exactly what it should be. Their balance thrills me. It receives the right amount of focus. I dare anyone to read this series and not adore what those two are building.Off to sleep now! Thanks for another wonderful read. It was a pleasure to spend the night with your world in my head.

Okay, but Not As Good As the Rest By Kathryn Zurmehly I have really enjoyed this series, but I think this is the end of the road for me.The plot is far more political than previous books, and not particularly compelling. There's lots of talk and the plot seems cyclic in a way that doesn't move forward quickly- Toby talks to bad guy, meets allies and gives them missions, has the same conversation with the bad guy again, rinse and repeat....I think it sets up what will hopefully be a major plot point down the line, but beyond that it didn't seem to contribute much to the ongoing mysteries of the series. Tybalt is still your ideal renfair man, with some delightfully sweet lines to our girl. I missed the Luidaeg, though I guess she can't always be there. It also has begun to throw in 'teachable moments'. I'm tired of these in every form of media and they're really jarring in an October Daye book, which have been just plain fun. Previously people were just the way they were and whatever, we need to go save the world now. Now we have to have a talk about it. I feel like it's starting to throw characterization off in a bad way and will only get worse further down the line.Overall, not a bad book, but not as good as the ones before, and the sudden inclusion of teachable moments means this is my last stop, which makes me sad. I really loved this series.

All the action, emotion, mystery, and revelation you expect from an October Daye novel; McGuire's most polished book yet By ML "A Red Rose Chain" is an achievement for Seanan McGuire. It has all the action, emotion, mystery, and revelation of her earlier October Daye novels, and this time McGuire has nailed the pacing as well. Some of her earlier books have been criticized for lagging at times or being bloated with filler and unnecessary repetition. This book just flows smoothly from beginning to end without gratuitous excursions or needlessly jarring transitions. Kudos to McGuire for continuing to raise the level of her craft! As for the content of the book, Toby finds herself in the court of King Rhys, an old crony of the queen Toby just recently helped to depose in the Kingdom of the Mists aka the San Francisco Bay area. King Rhys has elf-shot Queen Arden's seneschal, putting him to sleep for 100 years, as part of a declaration of war. Queen Arden has dispatched Toby to Rhys' Kingdom of Silences in hopes of averting a costly and bloody war. Toby knows she hasn't been sent because of her diplomatic skills; she strongly suspects that Arden expects Toby to sow her usual chaos, aborting the war by bringing down the king. Toby wouldn't mind doing taking King Rhys out, if she could find a way; not only is he harboring one of Toby's most bitter enemies, but his cruelty and intolerance, particularly towards her fellow changelings, are deeper than she could have guessed. King Rhys is clever, however, and he will not easily be outmaneuvered. Furthermore, Toby herself has something that the king wants, and he is not shy about telling her that he will have it -- and it is not something she can part with and yet live.Which, by the way, she does. Just so you know. Live, that is. Also, as a heads-up, if you're like me you will find yourself thinking at around p. 300 that there is no way she will wrap this thing up by p. 358. She does. It is not a cliff-hanger. So don't get too anxious about it.Overall, I'd say that "Red Rose Chain" keeps the series alive and growing. Toby's evolution as a person and as a fae power continues. She remains vulnerable, partly by choice -- she could abandon her humanity at any time, if she so decided -- and at the same time she learns more and more about the great capabilities and not-so-substantial limits of her blood magic. (By the way, I should slightly dial back what I said about repetition - she does go on too much about what it means to be Dochas Sidhe with power over blood, ability to sense blood, etc.) By surviving this trial, Toby not only gains in reputation, but it becomes increasingly clear that her role, should she survive it, is to clean up faery; perhaps she is even the one to orchestrate the return of Oberon, the absent father of the fae. Having your character rise from humble origins to become a major force in the world is hardly unprecedented in the history of novel series, but it's not always done very smoothly, and very often the character and the novels lose the characteristics that made them appealing in the first place. McGuire is doing a good job of keeping Toby sympathetic and relatable even as she increases her powers and the stakes at risk in each novel. One more thing: In this novel, McGuire does two things that do not seem wise to me. Make that three. First, she barely uses the Ludaig, who has emerged as one of the most interesting and enjoyable secondary characters in the series. Second, she uses the Ludaig in a way that does not seem consistent with her earlier behavior. I hope she is not turning the Ludaig into Toby's housecat. Third, she allows Toby and her friends to destroy a pillar of the fae way of warfare, one that has persisted for centuries if not millennia. The fallout from this act has to loom large in the next novel , which would be too bad. I don't care nearly as much about the tactics of fae conflict as I do about what the deal is with Toby's mother, why Oberon flew the coop, and other larger issues about faery and humanity.Bottom line: "A Red Rose Chain" is an excellent addition to this series. Some of the earlier books may feature more surprising twists or more dramatic events, but this book is still full and satisfying. If you've followed the series up to this point, reading this book is a no-brainer. Let's hope that McGuire continues to feed us another one of these fantastic feasts at least once a year into the indefinite future.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it was getting pretty tired. Toward the end By Aeneas Halfway through the book, I was about ready to give up on this series. Over the course of the first five and a half books, Booth has not grown much as a writer. Everything happens at a breakneck pace, all of the characters are under-developed, and the plot bounces endlessly from crisis to miraculous solution to next crisis. The books reminded me of an action movie franchise, where the next movie always needs to have a bigger bang than the last movie. So we've gone from dealing with evil wizards to talking about destroying multiple universes. And everything involves casual sex. While the formula still had its charm, it was getting pretty tired.Toward the end, though, Booth finally started to shift in a different direction. The tone got darker, in a way, but more importantly the consequences of the carnage started to come into focus. Jake begins to do some bad things, and it isn't presented in a comical way. There might still be some life in this series. I'll give it four stars, mostly because of the last third.

The mantises are coming! The book is fairly interesting, but the author takes a long time talking about how horrific the mantis courtship is. It is "horrific" but the author should decide wether this book is a thriller or text book. ;)if the descriptions weren`t so lengthy or generally boring, it would get four stars. If you want bugs in perspective, this is for you

Review "Thinking back to stories that inspired me as a child, it was always the ones with big images and grandiose plots. The battle borgs and blade fighting of Freyne certainly have this, along with a story of political intrigue at the heart of the kingdom's nobility."Allen Stroud  SF Book Reviews   "What this story does well, it does considerably well.  Early on in this book, this has the level of world building you would find in books like Dune.  The action reads a lot like Blade Runner (the movie).  (..) If you like Herbert and Dick, you'll find a lot to love here. "Adam Oster, Adventure Novelist"The plot is suspenseful and complex, slow to build at the beginning but comes together beautifully at the end. Political intrigue shows its ugly face at every step to trump our heroes. One is left wondering at what cost our heroes will succeed. The world building is fantastic, and I can easily see this as a movie.Sally Ann Melia does a remarkable job that will keep any YA fan from putting the book down. I would recommend this novel to any lover of classical sci-fi with political intrigue and lots of action. "Laura Fabrini, The Library of Clean Reads "One of the most powerhouse imaginations I've encountered in sci-fi..." -- Dean C. Moore, The Warlock's Friend.   "Guy Erma and the Son of Empire by Sally Ann Melia is a fast-paced and exciting YA military sci-fi read. Don't miss this one!" -- Brent LeVasseur, author of the Aoléon The Martian Girl.  "Set in a world where fashion and fun hide treacherous politics and danger, Guy Erma will keep you enthralled." -- Sherrill Nilson, Karda.

From the Author What inspires you to write?I breathe - I write.Even before I open my eyes I can see my characters and the see what they are doing, I can hear them talking and know what they are worried about. I have carried the story inside me for such a long time. I have to write it down. There is no other passion for except this one.Tell us about your writing process.I like to write longhand , I get too distracted from using computers and do not touch type well.I use dictation to transfer my books into computers. I am currently on my first draft of my second novel. I think there are at least two stages:1) writing the story down2) figuring about the best way to tell the story to your audience.I have a background in performance storytelling and sometimes I like to visualise a fidgety audience in order to figure how to tell my story.Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.I was born in the UK but age 12 emigrated to France, and found myself in the peculiar position of learning English as a second language. I was to sit at the back and be quiet. My mother suggested I practice writing in French.I found myself with the perfect excuse to spend 3 hours each week writing fiction. I have never looked back. What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?Guy Erma and the Son of Empire is a YA Science Fiction Thriller adventure. It was not inspired by any one incident, except perhaps the fascinating story of Mark Thatcher who while Mrs Thatcher was Prime Minister went missing while racing the Paris Dakkar car rally. There were rumours that MI5 was despatched to find him in the Sahara desert and at the same time terrorists from Algeria and other places were also looking for him. When he was found three days later any real danger was played down, and the actual facts never revealed. What is true is that during this brief period news journalists and politicians again and again whether Mrs Thatcher step down, that she could not rule while her only son was in so much danger. The kidnapping of Prince Teodor leaving his mother with a tenuous grip on power is a retelling of sorts of that story.

From the Back Cover I don't want to go... Do I have to go? 13-year-old Teodor knows his duty to the memory of his father and his kingdom, he must help those less fortunate than himself. He must also impress his uncle the Emperor if he is ever to become the Son of Empire. A frightening nightmare fills him with foreboding, but still he must go - into the Dome. 13-year-old Guy Erma lives in the shadow of the Dome, he has no father and no mother and his future is uncertain, he must start earning a living soon. He knows not where he will live or even how he will eat, and his only dream is to be accepted in the military academy - at the heart of the Dome. Two boys as different as any two boys might be. One act of cruelty will throw their lives together, but who dare they trust?

Great sci-Fi and the start of a fun adventure By Cassandra This is a genre I love, which tends to make me a bit more picky than normal about books. Despite this, I was fascinated by the story and thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The use of multiple plot lines and perspectives from different characters helped the plot to develop well and meant that there was a good mix of suspense and some twists along the way. I liked the fact that readers weren't told everything right from the beginning, but were instead left to learn and find out more as the plot developed. One interesting thing was that at the start of the book it wasn't really clear who the main character was supposed to be. It is only as the book develops and we learn more about the characters that this starts to become clearer. The book is written for a Young Adult audience and there are times where this is very clear. However, it is also a good read for an adult looking for something a bit more casual and light. There were some small editing issues which detracted from the story, but it was great overall. I also loved the fact that it is in British English rather than American, which is a breath of fresh air.

You bett "Erma" be sure to read this! @badwordplay By Owen Robinson When I saw the term “space opera” to refer to this book, the first thing I thought of was “FLASH!!!! AAAAHHHHH!!! Savior of the Universe!!”, which as we all know, is the worst Queen song ever written. However, I am a sci-fi fan, and I do enjoy dipping my toe into new YA series, so I checked it out.The story centers around Guy Erma, a 13 year old boy who has had a lifelong dream of joining the Dome Elite, which are kind of like "Space Marines" and Prince Teodor, heir to the Feyne Empire . It is a story of action, danger, blade fighting, cyborgs, shape shifting aliens, and Gorans, which are, in the easiest way I can describe them, RACING CATS!I have to say that YA novels can be hit or miss sometimes. For every “Harry Potter” or “The Hunger Games”, you get “One That Isn’t Good, That I Don’t Know The Name Of…”. But I am happy to say that I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of setting up to do, considering this is the first book in a series, but that’s obviously to be expected. The sci-fi elements seemed grounded in the story, and very natural. There was a definite lack of actual opera, though, which was disappointing…This book is a great YA novel: It’s fun, exciting, and a blast from start to finish. I highly recommend it, and will definitely be on the lookout for more adventures of Guy Erma in the future!

Miller I was given this book to review, and because it is directed at young adult audiences, there is the risk that a real target audience might not agree with me, however, I feel that it is well-plotted and is very well-written for the target audience. The story starts on the planet Sas Darona, which is on the border between the Zaracan Empire and the Freyne empire, which is expanding. Sas Darona is also rich in monazite, which is argued to be the source of a valuable element. Actually, monazite is a real ore, and it might have been preferable to mention the real elements it contains. The Zacaran Karl Valvanchi is approaching this planet, only to find massive bursts of incineration as people below try to exterminate an outbreak of cy-sect plague. We then go to Freyne 2, where Prince Teodor is either learning blades fighting or getting ready to race on giant carnivorous cats. Teodor is the son of the dead king, and should become king; in the meantime his mother is Regent. Guy Erma is a young model who wants to become a soldier. What happens next is a series of events where others try to grasp power. The story is full of action, intrigue and misrepresentation, but set at a level that I think should be suitable for younger people. Overall, I think it is an excellent read for the YA reader.

Nisa has done it again, for real. The book starts out and continues with a steady pace, nice development and really unexpected twists and turns throughout. It's full of surprises. You won't be able to put it down!

Its too much drama with Kola and Eduardo's baby mamas. More power to Kola holding it down. Eduardo is pimping it up. Twin (Jamel) sounds grimey to Apple's personality. Book has a surprise ending with sneak peaks of book 6. Too bad book 6 is coming out in 2016. Nisa Santiago needs to release book 6 faster, because cannot wait to read it.

Short but Surprising By Lesley - HSR I received a copy of the Cougar Tales Box set Father and Son, Jamaican Love & Italian Basketball Player from Cheryl Holloway in return for my honest review. Now i'm not a person who generally enjoys short stories but i did enjoy the concept of Father & Son. Some people may say the story is badly written but i believe its just right for a novella...quite simple and really easy to follow :)When a writer gets too technical with their writing in a short story/novella it can become increasingly harder to commit to writing a short story if that makes any sense :DAny how little rant over now, i can tell you what i thought was good about this novella...the main thing i enjoyed about the story was despite how short the story was and the simplicity of its writing the characters where really easy to connect with which helped boost all the emotional factors of the story. This story is a mix of emotions from love, hate, happiness, grief and gross happiness.....yes i did say gross happiness, one of those moments when something is happy but when you thing about it it's also gross or disturbing at the same time. so without giving the story away that is all i can say...

The first two books in the Knight Protectors series on sale for a LIMITED TIME. Nibbled by the Vamp – Wren Minix knew vamps were real. Totally. But mean fairies? Fairies weren’t supposed to be mean! But they are, and she really thought she was gonna become fairy dust if it hadn’t been for the super hunky vampire that saved her. Had she mentioned hunky? And, hey, giving him a little snack in return was no bigs. He helped, after all. Except she wanted one nibble to turn into two and then…oodles. And she’d tell him so…just as soon as she finished tasting all of those yummy muscles. Big Bad Vamp – Tory has more bug-out bags and escape plans to get out of Atlanta than there are stars in the sky. And it appears she’s gonna need them. With her habit of digitally visiting different servers across the globe, she always figured she’d piss off the wrong people at some point. It looks like that day has arrived. Some crazy glitter throwing, wing-wearing weirdos are on her tail, and screaming “it wasn’t me” at them isn’t making them go away. With the sparkle freaks closing in, Tory has no choice but to call her fang-banging BFF for help. Finally, an über hunky vamp appears to whisk her to safety. Except she dies. Really. Dead-dead. Almost. See, the thing about it is… Want book three for free? Book three–Poking the Vamp–will be released in FREE INSTALLMENTS through my newsletter.

Both girls are spunky, have an awesome sense of humor, and they are incredibly snarky. The sex scenes are pretty good, but they don't get in the way of the plot. I was actually impressed at how complex the plot is considering how short these two books are. It's hard to find a balance between romance and plot in short books, but Celia Kyle has done a wonderful job.Read this!

By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Knights Protectors Volume One (Nibbled by the Vamp and Big Bad Vamp)Series: Knight ProtectorsDesignation: Volume One Bundle consisting of Standalone Novellas One and TwoAuthor: Celia KyleMy Rating: FIVE HOT ROCKIN' STARSCelia Kyle has dazzled her readers yet again with another spectacular fun-filled new series, The Knight Protectors. The Volume One compilation includes Nibbled by the Vamp and Big Bad Vamp, the first two books of the series. In this remarkable modern day parody of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table, the knights are actually vampires protecting the city of Atlanta from evil supernatural forces including pixies and dark demi-gods. Yep, I said pixies. And they are not so cutesy and definitely not nice. Each individual story is a well written short standalone novella featuring a different vamp protector and his "fire" with its very own happy for now ending. Each story is filled to the brim with danger, drama, action, adventure, suspense, humor and romance. And did I mention dreamy sex? Oh yeah, totally has that as well! Does anyone remember the Carly Simon golden oldie, Nobody does It Better? You know, the one that was a theme song for one of the James Bond movies? Well, as I was reading this book, that song kept replaying in my mind because believe me when I say, nobody does it better than Celia Kyle! These stories are fast-paced, easy to follow, outrageously funny, exceptionally well written, well edited and include a fabulous cast of hilariously engaging characters. The men are handsome, strong, protective alpha males or should I say vamps, and their women are big, bold, brave and beautiful with a generous side of sass and snark. These stories have it all! I love it! Fabulous entertainment and a rollicking good time for all! Rock on Celia Kyle! We want more!

Ratcliff Celia Kyle says that she plans on writing more of the Knight Protectors and that this 2 in 1 bundle is partly to get those of us who missed these 2 short books when they first came out interested in the series. It worked! I'm not much of a vampire reader but these guys - hawt but .... well just not quite as smart as their new found mates. I like that these vampires are victims of a virus and not actually dead. This world is interesting with a different take on old favorites like the vampires and pixies, etc.Nibbled By The Vamp is book 1 and brings us Griffin Linch, Knight Protector and Wren Minix is his Fire (aka fated mate). Until now, the vampires have thought that a FIRE was a myth. So now we have the pixie king (mega nasty Hyde Pinxton) out to kill Wren, the Knight Protectors realizing that their Fires are out there someplace and an apparent plot to eliminate the Knights.Big Bad Vamp has Wren's BFF Tory - computer whiz and conspiracy theorist - being pursued by the pixie king ( she MAY have broken into his files and downloaded lots of info and let lose a virus) Liam has been sent by Wren to protect Tory - Hyde attacks them and there is a daeva named Jemshir... CHAOS ENSUES !Great fun - hot vampires - steamy sex - HEA
