Library Journal raves that readers “looking for heartfelt romance will feel the warmth emanating from this page-turner,” Sophia Henry’s debut featuring the Detroit Pilots, a hockey team full of complicated men who fight for love. Auden Berezin is used to losing people: her father, her mother, her first love. Now, just when she believes those childhood wounds are finally healing, she loses something else: the soccer scholarship that was her ticket to college. Scrambling to earn tuition money, she’s relieved to find a gig translating for a Russian minor-league hockey player—until she realizes that he’s the same dangerously sexy jerk who propositioned her at the bar the night before. Equal parts muscle and scar tissue, Aleksandr Varenkov knows about trauma. Maybe that’s what draws him to Auden. He also lost his family too young, and he channeled the pain into his passions: first hockey, then vodka and women. But all that seems to just melt away the instant he kisses Auden and feels a jolt of desire as sudden and surprising as a hard check on the ice. After everything she’s been through, Auden can’t bring herself to trust any man, let alone a hot-headed puck jockey with a bad reputation. Aleksandr just hopes she’ll give him a chance—long enough to prove he’s finally met the one who makes him want to change.Praise for Delayed Penalty“Delayed Penalty is sexy, fun, and full of angst. Not only does Aleksandr dominate the ice, but he fights for what he wants outside of the rink as well. I will definitely read it again!”—New York Times bestselling author L. P. It's better to have loved and had your heart raked across hot coals and stomped on than never to have loved at all? That's the route I'd decided to take, because saying no never even crossed my mind."-AudenDelayed Penalty is an NA Hockey Romance. This is Sophia Henry's debut novel.Auden is a college student that has recently lost her soccer scholarship. To drown away her sorrows she and her best friend decide to "party it up". While out, they meet some super sexy hockey players. With the holiday break looming, Auden is in no hurry to go home with anyone!Raised by her grandparents, Auden returns to her childhood home for the holiday break. Auden's Grandfather manages a Russian translating company and immediately puts her to work as a translator for a Russian Hockey player named Sasha. Imagine her surprise when her new client is non other than the "hottest" of the hockey players she met in the bar."Having been abandoned by both parents before age seven, the last person I needed to get involved with was a professional athlete whose job required him to leave."-Auden Sasha is a gifted athlete and is enthusiastic about having Auden as his translator. The two are destined to connect. With the combination of their Russian roots, passion for hockey, and physical attraction between the two it doesn’t take long for these two to connect. They start as friends and they spend a great deal of time "getting to know" one another before any substantial physical connection begins between the two."Aleksandr was an untouchable man I wanted to touch so badly."-Auden"How many times had I wanted someone to stop talking and just hold me?"-Auden Told in Auden's POV, Delayed Penalty was overall an entertaining read. I enjoyed the complex characterization of both of the main characters. Auden and Sasha had a unique back story which I enjoyed reading. The Russian element was also a unique twist to this hockey romance. What was problematic in this read is simply.... there was too much going on! Auden sings in a band, she likes to play soccer, she speaks Russian, and she works as a waitress. All of that coupled with a mini drama of an "old flame" left my head spinning at times. I felt like overall there needed to be more cohesion with the plot and some streamlining with the secondary plot (and characters) as well. Still, I really liked both of the main characters so in the end, I was glad that I picked up this read.Overall, Delayed Penalty left a smile on my face. If you are looking for a light hockey romance (and you can overlook the "extra business" in the plot), then I highly recommend picking it up. I will certainly keep my eye on this series and would definitely read another Sophia Henry book in the future.

A solid hockey romance By Reviews In A Pinch Full Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Flirt/Loveswept, via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. My Thoughts: I am a massive hockey fan and have been having withdrawals now that the season is over. I don’t mind contemporary romance, but something in the book’s description has to immediately capture my interest. The easiest way, so far, is to have one of the characters be a hockey or football player. If you have those elements, I’ll more than likely read it.When I initially started Delayed Penalty I was a little worried that it would suddenly veer into an erotica story line. So I was pleasantly surprised when that didn’t happen; it was actually pretty clean. Auden and Aleksandr’s story was interesting and they definitely had chemistry. There were moments when the chemistry felt forced, but they worked overall. I also lost my place once or twice because Aleksandr’s English changed between being fluent (with Auden) and broken up (with everyone else) because it wasn’t really specified who was around. The main character Auden was almost too relatable for me. There were so many parts that had me nodding in agreement and sighing in resignation. When she started talking about what she wanted in a relationship, I’m pretty sure my eyes were cartoonishly wide because it was what I want from a relationship, word for word. That was a little freaky because I like books to be my escape, not a mirror to start self analyzing.I don’t really know where to start with Aleksandr. I went back and forth on agreeing with Auden’s attraction to him. The hardest part for me was the smoking. Smoking is a huge deal breaker and the fact that she kept sniffing him to enjoying inhaling the scent of cloves (from his cigarettes) was kind of grossing me out. Other than that, I kind of loved Aleksandr. He’s a Russian hockey player with a wicked sense of humor; what’s not to like? I was slightly confused by him at one point though. He tells Auden that it’s kind of a turn on to see other guys hitting on her and then a few pages later punches her band mate in a possessive turn of events. In all fairness, I think he had that punch coming, but it was still confusing.I truly enjoyed reading Delayed Penalty. Although I was a little annoyed by the very last chapter (it really was unnecessary). I’ll be looking forward to the release of Power Play (book 2) in February of 2016. I’m guessing it’ll be about Landon (just putting it out there). There are sexual situations that are probably not suitable for anyone under the age of 16. If you’re a fan of sports contemporary romance, I would recommend Delayed Penalty. For more reviews, check out http://reviewsinapinch.com/ today!

I don't normally read a lot of sports especially hockey stories, but the synopsis for this one grabbed me so I thought I'd give it a shot and I'm SOOO glad I did.I literally could NOT put this book down. I read it from start to finish in one sitting because I was just so invested in the story and the characters. There was a very different kind of chemistry that worked for Auden and Aleksandr than I've read in a while. And oddly, there really wasn't a lot of naughty scenes and most books I love have them so I'm a bit surprised that I loved this book so much without them.I would've liked to see some more conflict between the characters but seeing as they are both so young and their relationship is so new, I suppose that would come along later. I didn't feel like the story dragged at any points so it all worked in the end.I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
