I've read a significant number of books in this genre, both on the independent and main stream publisher side. Some of my favorites are Sam Sisavath, James Cook, Dirk Patton, Mark Tufo, and of course, David Achord. I like all of them for slightly different reasons but one constant across all of them is that they all have very well-developed, colorful cast of characters.Achord does a good job in this book of showing how things, over time, have changed and will never return to the way they used to be. Like when Zach comments on the road conditions and recognizes that soon, most of the roads will be impossible to navigate on because there is no maintenance being done on them. It's the little things like this that really drives home the point that living in a SHTF / Zombie Apocalypse world would be extremely difficult.Zfinity picks up where Book 2 left off with Zach, Julie, Terry, Andie, and Fred trying to stay alive in a world full of zombies and small-time warlords. They continue to make their way of life more sustainable as well as welcoming in new arrivals. As others have pointed out, this book takes on a darker tone and is very much a "coming-of-age" wake up call to Zach. There were times during this book that I wanted to just close it and not open it again; not because it was bad but because I couldn't bear to see what fates were going to befall the characters in this book. But, I soldiered on and I am looking forward to Book 4!

I read them all, and sort of enjoyed them because the story takes place near where I live, but past that they were hard reads. The writing was very stilted and if the author could find a complex/fancy/three sylable word to use instead of a simple one he sure found one. I get that the main character is supposed to be some sort of young genius and therefore might use more formal language, but virtually every character did it as well - even the good ole boys who probably didn't get past 8th grade. I could go on, but what really annoyed me was the ending.SPOILER!!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I WARNED YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!It just fricken ends. Pretty much every character you got to know and like/dislike is just killed off. In one fell swoop. And you don't even get to see how they die. They are just dead. Bam! Then, nothing. The main character just gives up. The guy who could do everything and think of every angle just sits down and says, "the hell with it." The end.SadAnd as a result it's like the author said the same thing. "The hell with it, I'm done."

I have rated the series so highly because the lead character, Zach, brought depth and humor to this ZA story line. There are also many flushed out supporting characters that added greatly to the story line. Books 1 & 2 were realistic in that if a character needed to die, so be it. However, readers tend to be loyal to a series because there is a core group of characters that we relate to and enjoy reading about. Book 3 takes the series in a much darker direction. Zach has always done what he needed to do to survive and keep the ones he cares about safe. The story in book 3 transforms Zach into a man with a mission for revenge. I am going to miss the old Zach but I am looking forward to him kicking some serious ass in book 4.
