In this crime novel by CWA Diamond Dagger winner Catherine Aird, Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan returns to solve a locked-room mystery, but he’s thrown for a loop when a prominent industrialist turns up dead On the hottest day in living memory, Richard Mallory Tindall, the owner of a patent firm, does not return home to Cleete village. When a man is found crushed to death, Tindall’s case goes from missing person to homicide.   In the course of solving murder cases, Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan has seen all manner of ugly death. But there’s something particularly gruesome about this one, the body crushed beneath the marble and iron of an old Saxon church tower. With rubble blocking off access to the crime scene, no one can get close enough to inspect the body. What little evidence is available—a burned match, a black thread, an earring—doesn’t bode well for a quick and easy solution.   Even the legendarily cool-headed great detective might begin to crack when a second body turns up. And then an important file goes missing from Sloan’s office. How does it all connect?

Gormly Once again, Catherine Aird has taken a classic idea, the locked room mystery, and given it her own ingenious spin. In this, the sixth book in her Inspector Sloan series, the body of a murdered man is found buried under the rubble of a fallen monument in the bell tower of a church. No one can get into the room because the rubble is blocking the only door.So how was he murdered? The unfolding of the story includes love, lust, religion, science, big business, greed and misunderstandings. All done in a very British way, of course.Poor Inspector Sloan is saddled, as usual, with the young, brash and brainless Constable Crosby, who provides a light touch to Catherine Aird's prose. If you like Ellis Peter's Detective George Felse series, you'll really enjoy Catherine Aird.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Classic Locked-Room Mystery. By Shirley Schwartz Ms. Aird's version of a "locked-room" mystery is an intriguing one. Her dry wit and intelligent writing make it an excellent example of thie genre. Not only that, but the book in its entirety takes place during the space of one day. It can't get much tighter than that. It all begins when an arm is seen amongst several tons of broken plaster in a locked church bell tower. This sets Inspector Sloan on the track of a murderer. But its her characters that make the story so special - the enigmatic Sloane, the bumbling Sergeant Crosby and the colourful Superintendent Leeyes. Ms Aird is a master craftsman of the the cozy mystery formula.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Average, but has intriguing elements. By Peter LaPrade "His Burial too" is an average read(the two previous Sloan mysteries are slightly better) with a few interesting twists on the locked-room mystery. A man who worked at a patent firm is found dead, crushed by a marble statue that had exiting the room impossible. So Inspector Sloan and his bumbling, eternally young sidekick Constable Crosby try and figure out how the guy was killed. Very rare murder weapon and a few Byzantine twists help save it.

Friendship, religion, sexual awakening, love, loss and longing. An engaging – and often humorous – novel about the joys and sorrows of growing up. It is September 1959 and two significant things happen to eleven year old Ellen McCann; she goes to the Convent school in the neighbouring town of Turneley where she meets Erica Latimer, and, back at home, she falls in love with Michael Chadwell. During the months and years that follow, her school life and her home life continue along parallel tracks. Her friendship with Erica develops and intensifies, and she gets drawn into a series of Latimer family intrigues and revelations which – ultimately and unexpectedly – lead to tragedy. Meanwhile, her childhood love for Michael Chadwell appears to have run its course. Or has it? She leaves for university in September 1966, looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead – but still grieving over the losses she has incurred along the way.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Accurately Depicts The Process Of Growing Up By Awesome Indies Reviews Clad in Armour Of Radiant White is one of those rare books that accurately depicts the process of growing up and, more specifically, how we internalize important events that we experience in order to become who we are as adults. Many coming-of-age tales are vehicles to discuss the age in which they take place. This one (which takes place in Lancashire, UK during the 50s and 60s, a fertile environment) uses the incredible events of the era as a subtle backdrop for the story of Ellen, a young Catholic schoolgirl. While some religious elements come into play, this is much more a story of love, loss and growth.Ellen goes to an all-girl school that is commonly referred to as “The Convent”, where she is an above-average student who is infatuated with a boy named Michael. Like Ellen, all of the other girls around her age are also beginning to date boys, and the details of these courtship rituals make up a large part of the narrative. Ellen’s best friend is Erica, and through their relationship we learn about the fragility of young love and the impermanence of adolescent friendship. The religious aspects of the book mostly deal with Ellen’s interpretations. She is a young Catholic girl who at times questions her faith and tries to be a good Christian while still knowingly committing what she views as sins. Ellen and her friends are not prepared to deal with any of the realities of the world (indeed, the only real information they get about “sex-ual inter-course” is through a pamphlet about menstruation handed out by a nun), so it comes as no surprise when a tragedy occurs and the children are blindsided by it. The Catholic community that the book portrays will feel very familiar to most, and the secondary and tertiary cast is brought to life in an engaging way. Clad in Armour of Radiant White is very much the story of the complexity of adult relationships seen through the eyes of confused Catholic children. Ellen’s perpetual Catholic guilt also makes up a large part of the story.Sex and puberty are often discussed by the characters in the book, and one could make the argument that Ellen and her friends are boy crazy. They rarely talk about anything else, and the reader should be prepared for that, but this serves to characterize them enough to make the events of the book (which almost all deal with relationships and sex) and the characters’ reactions to them understandable. What sexuality has to do with Catholicism is lightly explored, but usually amounts to the young characters quickly making up their own rules to follow and debating what constitutes a sinful act. While the book accomplishes its goal beautifully and brilliantly, I could also see how some might criticize the book for its lack of action. This is a book in which nothing out-of-the-ordinary happens until the very last few pages. For the vast majority of the book, no one ever really acts out of character and the dramatic stakes are never higher than what any average person will experience growing up. I can see how some readers might be turned off by this approach, but it allows the book to be clearly anchored in reality. Ellen is not Tom Sawyer or Ender Wiggin. She is a regular, confused Catholic girl growing up in the sixties. I can see this book appealing the most to female teenagers, but anyone who is interested in experiencing the perspective of growing up Catholic in Lancashire in the 50s and 60s are going to get exactly what they’re looking for. 4.5 Stars, rounded up to 5 for review purposes.Additional Note: The ending of the book, particularly the final twist, is incredibly confusing. It is impossible to discuss the ending without spoiling the events of the book, but it is left open-ended in a way that casts a very dark shadow over Ellen, seemingly out of nowhere. The main character’s motives are left intentionally ambiguous and as a result it is difficult to tell if the apparent shift in tone has been steadily building the whole time or if this character is simply not who we think she is. While unclear, I think it works perfectly for the book, and have deducted no points for the way the ending is presented.

Lacey lives in the country with her husband and two daughters. They enjoy skiing and sliding in the winter, swimming, golfing, and boating in the summer, and music all year long. Lacey also tries to keep up her mixed martial arts skills, just in case one of her unsavoury characters comes to life…

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wished I had read the prequel first. By SLS I wished I had read the Prequel, "The Chosen One" first because I think this book would have read even better. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the story but I think knowing more about Ariel's mother would have made Book 1 even better. I wouldn't really know though, since I didn't even know it existed until I came here to review this book. Out of curiosity I clicked on the corner of "The Chosen One" and read a little of the story & that was what made me think this book would have been better if I had read the prequel first. So if you haven't read the prequel and you are interested in getting this book, get and read the prequel first. That being said, you don't have to read the prequel in order to understand what is happening in "Shadow Grove."I don't normally read stories about witches or vampires so I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this story. Thankfully there was only 1 vampire in the story or I probably would not have finished the book. I just don't like vampire stories--but to each his own. This was more of a magical story than anything else. I love magic. The story is about a young girl who does not know she is a witch until she and her father travel to Shadow Grove for the funeral of her grandfather. It is here in Shadow Grove where everything started. The longer she stays there, even before she found out she was a witch, the more she wanted to stay. The problem was that her father was determined that they only stay long enough to settle up her grandfather's will. I won't tell you the story or what would be the point in you reading it if you already knew everything that happened. I just wanted to let readers know that I did enjoy the book and at some point I will get "The Chosen One" and read it too. I only have one con about this book. Even though I know it is a series, I like for my books to have a resolution--a stand alone book. This book did more or less have an ending, but then right at the very end, it left you with a mini-cliffhanger--questions about what is going to happen in the next book--such as why was the person on the very last page of the book so interested in Ariel. I can't tell you who it is because that would be giving some of the story away. My plan for now is to read other books in the series as they come out--as long as the next books are not overrun with vampires!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great start By Red Riding Hood Great start to a new series! Loved everything about this book and I'm excited for the next book. I love all the characters and the writing just flowed off the pages. Couldn't put this book down!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book very much By Julia E. Hall I received this book through library thing in exchange for a free review. I enjoyed this book very much. The concept is great, the characters are very interesting and the story was well written. I guess I gave the 4 stars because this story was very slow. I was hoping for more in the space provided than what I got. I feel like what I got was an introduction to what could be and hopefully will be coming. I don't mind reading the whole story as a series of novellas, but I fear that each will be the same as this one...leave me hanging and wishing it was more. I am going to read The Chosen One, The prequel but if that leaves me feeling the same then I give up on this Author. My wish is for a complete story and I just think this "introduction" to the series was dragged out and more could have been included and still left us wanting more, but in a good way.

The poignant story of what happens when a woman who thinks she's lost everything has the chance to love again.Leo has long joked that, in the event of his death, he wants his best friend Garrett, a lifelong bachelor, to marry his wife, Audrey. One drunken night, he goes so far as to make Garrett promise to do so. Then, twelve years later, Leo, a veteran firefighter, dies in a skiing accident. As Audrey navigates her new role as widow and single parent, Garrett quits his job in Boston and buys a one-way ticket out west. Before long, Audrey's feelings for Garrett become more than platonic, and Garrett finds himself falling for Audrey, her boys, and their life together in Portland. When Audrey finds out about the drunken pact from years ago, though, the harmless promise that brought Garrett into her world becomes the obstacle to his remaining in it.

By VitelloReads For me, Polly Dugan really captured the pathos and complexities of sudden young widowhood (I, too, lost a husband to an accident and was left to raise children on my own).I appreciated the variety of perspectives (the sons, the would-be lover, the widow), and Dugan's deft hand at blending their particulars tales into a braid of grief.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A well written women's contemporary novel! By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS Reviewer jerjenThis is a story that involves many facets of life. It deals with many real-life situations and issues. It is a story about friendship, love, loss, pain, life, commitment and second chances. It is about having the courage to let go of the past and grabbing the future with both hands.Leo and Garrett have been best friends for a very long time. They have each others’ back and would do just about anything for each other. Leo decides that he cannot think of anyone better to take care of his wife and family should anything ever happen to him. He is not planning on dying anytime soon but being a firefighter, he knows that it is possible he will die in the line of duty. He gets Garrett to agree that, in the event of his death, Garrett will be there for his wife Audrey and his children and will take of them forever. When the unthinkable happens and Leo does die, Garrett must decide if he will honor the promise he made to Leo. And he has to find out if Audrey is willing to accept his help.I like the fact that the book is written from different perspectives. Each chapter spotlights a different character: there are sections for Garrett, Audrey, and Audrey’s children. I found this to be a very effect way to follow their lives, their feelings, their struggles and their emotions.Reading about what happened to Audrey made me stop to think about how I would feel in the same situation. How devastated I would feel, how alone I would feel and how overwhelmed I would feel. I think I would feel as though I would never overcome my grief and I would just want to give up on life. But then I would look at my children and know that I had to move on and be there for them. This is a situation that many women and men are faced with and forced to deal with on a daily basis. I think the author did a great job relaying the devastation and determination it would take to get through this. This book explored the different types of love that exists. There is the obvious one, the love between spouses or a significant other. Most people have experienced this type of love and have first hand experience in these feelings. But there is also the love between best friends, the love that Leo and Garrett experienced. They had best friends forever and would do anything for each other. Some people may have not experienced this type of love but it does exist. And the third type of love demonstrated in this book is the love between parent and adult. In some ways, I think this is the strongest love there is.The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick read. There are a lot of heartfelt emotions contained within the pages and the reader is taken on an emotional roller-coaster ride. It also challenged me to think about what my feelings would be and how I would handle things if I found myself in Audrey’s shoes. I really enjoyed the fact that this happened.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written women’s contemporary. If you like to read books that make you stop and think about how you would react, this is a book that you should read.

By Annie The Sweetheart DealWritten by Polly DuganA good book captures your interest, a great book holds your interest and a fantastic book has you talking to the characters. The Sweetheart Deal is a fantastic book. Leo, Audrey’s husband died in a skiing accident. Previously Leo asked his best friend Garrett to sign a paper stating he would marry and take care of Audrey upon Leo’s death. Audrey knows nothing about the pact between the two men. Garrett moves in with Audrey under the guise of completing a building project Leo had started but not completed. When Audrey finds the signed agreement she was devastated and asked Garrett to leave. Audrey is hurt, Garrett is hurt and the kids are hurt. Will Audrey find a way to forgive Garrett? How will Garrett go on with his life? The Sweetheart Deal is told from several perspectives: Audrey, Garrett, and the sons’. I enjoyed this tale. I found myself talking to Audrey. I told her how stupid she was to let Garrett go. I begged her to get over it. I wanted Garrett to stand up for himself. I also told them both that it was too soon. Audrey hadn’t taken time to grieve. Then there was the firemen/friends of Leo butting in offering their opinions. While I really did enjoy this tale I found it predictable. It was easy to guess what was going to happen next. The Sweetheart Deal is a great read for the times when you want something light. This is a review of the audio version of The Sweetheart Deal read by: Kathleen McInerney, John Glouchevitch, Brad Abrell, Adam McArthur, Aaron Landon, and John Salwin.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Add some Christmas Cheer to your reading!!! By Circumspect 4 I was given this amazing opportunity to review the first three stories in Sweet Christmas Kisses 2. This book is collaboration of 19 heartwarming Christmas romances by various authors. Who doesn’t love a good Christmas romance?Christmas Papa by Mona RiskMY REVIEWThis story involves Monica, her twin boys, Louis and Chris, Michael Wheeler, and Jake Carlton. The majority of the book takes place in Lexington, Kentucky.Monica and Michael meet while in a wedding. Their meeting is less than ideal as Monica has an unexpected visitor, her “boyfriend” Jake Carlton, a doctor who has moved to Alaska.Monica is a single mother of twin boys that is currently attending school to obtain her degree in Journalism. Monica did not have the easiest childhood as she was raised without her father and her mother could never be nominated as mother of the year. Monica is used to being hurt by men and doesn’t trust them. I can’t say I blame her!Michael Wheeler has a reputation for being a playboy and is far from ready for any commitment. He’s successful and his job requires a lot of travel. Jake Carlton is a doctor that has moved to Alaska and is “dating” Monica long distance. This is a fast paced book, which I love, and is a very endearing love story. Monica does not sit around and wait for a man to come rescue her. She moves forward with her life putting her children and education before anything else.Ultimately, Monica overcomes so much of her past and I love the way Michael connects with Monica’s twin boys. Talk about pulling at your heartstrings!!!I think this quote in the book sums this book up completely, “In his arms, she would forget her past and her insecurities, and find her future and happiness.”~MonicaDoes Monica find happiness in the arms of Jake or Michael????Gingerbread Kisses by Beate BoekerMY REVIEWCarol has traveled to Dolomite Alps in Italy to attend her younger sister's, Natasha, Christmas wedding to Angelo Bertolli, an extremely rich bachelor and provide her cookie catering services at the wedding. This is also supposed to be a vacation for Carol as she has been working effortlessly to establish her own cookie business. However, her sister has turned into a bridezilla. While Carol is in the hotel kitchen catering to bridezilla's demands, Carol meets Tom, the hotel manager, a sexy Italian.Carol and Tom have an obvious connection but run into problems as Carol is based in Boston and Tom lives in Italy, and is further complicated by Natasha's whimsical demands of her fiance, who is also Tom's best friend. Will true love reign with another Christmas wedding on the horizon or will spoiled Natasha ruin Carol's chance at love?Boycotting Christmas by Melinda CurtisMY REVIEWThis Christmas story involves Nick Santolli, his five-year-old niece, Cindy, and Joy, and it takes place in Brody Falls. Initially, this book started out as a Hallmark movie and quickly turned into National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and it had me laughing all the way.Nick, the town "man-whore", has assumed the care of his niece as both of her parent have been deployed overseas. Nick is determined to give Cindy the best Christmas ever. So, he seeks out the help of an old friend, Joy, but Nick doesn't know that Joy is currently boycotting Christmas because her father is engaged to Joy's best friend, Penny.Penny is quite a character in this book. She reminds me of the "plastics" from Mean Girls. Joy and Penny's banter throughout the book is brilliant.Nick and Joy have been friends for years with Joy wanting more from Nick, but Nick had been given strict orders from his best friend, Joy's brother, and Joy's father, to stay away from Joy. The story builds off their past and their promise to give Cindy the best Christmas ever. This was my favorite of the three stories that I read. It is funny, sweet, and full of Christmas spirit.Thank you to bestselling author, Melinda Curtis, for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review of the first three stories. My reviews are based on my opinions of the book and are my opinions alone.

Here are a few of my favorites…Beach Walk by Grace Greene – Kelli was a teenage runaway, taken in by Margie twelve years ago. They live in a small cottage on Emerald Isle, NC. Margie is like a mother to Kelli and she is happier than she’s ever been in her life. Then, Margie falls ill and dies before they can have one more Christmas together. Margie had told Kelli the cottage would be hers, one day, but Kelli can’t find a will. When Margie’s nephew, Dylan, shows up, Kelli believes he only wants the property. As days pass, Kelli learns more and makes a discovery requiring a decision…truth or deceit? An Irish Christmas Blessing by Roxanne Rustand – Eve agrees to go to Ireland, for two months, to run the bookshop her friend, Shauna, owns. Eve sees it as a dream come true. Reality is different, though. From the start, things don’t go well. Shauna is called away, before Eve arrives, and Eve’s arrival is greeted by screaming, a barking dog and a strange man (with a broken ankle). Police, a phone call and some clarification find Eve becoming the caregiver to Shauna’s photographer brother, Devlin, while he recuperates from his broken ankle. Eve is in for a holiday she will never forget. An Angel for Christmas by Raine English – Alexa has lost her husband and her job, in the past year. She and her daughter, Cara, are facing eviction and Alexa is barely able to keep food on the table. Blake is divorced and needs a nanny for his spoiled daughter, Britney. (He is, also, the former owner of the lab Alexa lost her job from.) An encounter at the grocery store and a second meeting, at the food bank, lead him to ask Alexa to work for him. Reluctantly, Alexa agrees and she, Cara and their dog, Digger, move into Blake’s home, where things get even more challenging. Here are the other titles, in this collection…Gingerbread Kisses by Beate BoekerChristmas Laurel by Christine BushBoycotting Christmas by Melinda CurtisA Christmas to Remember by Denise DevineThe Cowboy’s Christmas Bride by Aileen FishLucky Break Christmas: Second Honeymoon by Patricia ForsytheCountry Christmas by Lois GreimanThe Christmas Crusade by Shanna HatfieldThe Christmas Charm by Susan R. I love the unexpected and I certainly got it here. Lois Greiman brings some harsh reality, some real life feelings to light in her story Country Christmas. At first I was confused as to where she was going with this story, but she takes us on a heart breaking and heart warming story. About love and not just romantic love, but lifetime, unconditional love.Shanna Hatfeild's Christmas Crusade will leave you smiling with thoughts of snow and ice and old time traditions. Warmth of characters and real life stories make this a terrifically heart warming, Christmas read.I really appreciate Shanna allowing me the honor of pre-viewing this special set of stories! Thank you, Shanna! In The Christmas Charm, Susan R. Hughes, really gets her heroine a second chance, in the midst of crazy Christmas shopping, there he is. Can she do it? You gotta read this sweet story!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Still a world apart from the literary brilliance and intricacy of Kennedy's bestselling books By Alessandro della Rosa Not a bad return for Douglas Kennedy, after some unsuccessful attempts at matching the standard of literary brilliance he showed when he wrote "The pursuit of happiness" or "The woman in the fifth".The plot is fairly gripping and the themes it touches upon thought-provoking but, in my view, the last 30% of the book could easily have been cut by half. So much so that the unnecessary abundance of description got me skipping entire paragraphs of the novel without the feeling that I was missing out on anything too important. So, yes, a fairly good book overall that succeeds at entertaining you until the last turn of the page but which lacks the accomplishment of the books that shot the Kennedy's star to the literary firmament.

She is convinced that it is here she will finally become pregnant. But when Paul suddenly disappears, and Robin finds herself the prime suspect in the police inquiry, everything changes. As her understanding of the truth starts to unravel, Robin lurches from the crumbling art deco of Casablanca to the daunting Sahara, caught in an increasingly terrifying spiral from which there is no easy escape. With his acclaimed ability to write page-turners that also make you think, Douglas Kennedy takes the reader on a roller-coaster journey into a heart of darkness that asks the question: what would you do if your life depended on it?While reading I got a feeling that the author must have fallen head-over-heels in love with a passionate as well as beautiful country, Morocco, since he portrayed the city so vividly that it gave me a feeling like I've been there before and know it's dark and back alleys like the back of my hand. I've never been to Morocco but after reading this book, I'm thoroughly intrigued to visit this exotic paradise on earth. And like I said, the author has so intricately layed the detailing of the Moroccan cities namely Casablanca, Tata, Ouarzazate, the Sahara Desert and Marrakesh, it feels like when I visit Morocco, then I don't need a single guide to help me find my way through these cities, even the author hasn't missed out on the tricks and trades of the city and I'm definitely learning French before I pay a visit to Morocco. From the streets to the culture to the history to the language to the architectural descriptions to the food like baklava to the poverty stricken side to the richer side of the city to the heritage to the dimly lit or rather say dark alleys to the souk to the landscape to the skyline, every tiny details has been captured with perfection and grace by the author. Hence the story gives a visual as well as sensory feel about Morocco.Robin and Paul arrive at Morocco on a romantic vacation especially to be away from all those financial drama that are leaving them almost penniless due to Paul's shopaholic nature. Soon Paul goes missing leaving Robin as the prime suspect by the Moroccan police. And gradually Robin is reluctantly dragged into a dangerous adventure which leads her to visiting various cities of Morocco and unraveling it's secrets and also exposing herself to very real taste of death all the while finding for her husband. So will Robin find her husband? The writing style is great and articulate, in fact layered with evocative narrative style that is both in French and English and at times in Arabic too, thus giving the readers with a sense of nativeness of a particular destination. The prose is elegant and very structured. And the mystery builds up is done strikingly. What did not intrigue me much was the fact the story was taking wrong turns constantly and even the end was not at all satisfying, I don't even know if I should say that this book belongs to a crime fiction genre which has been highlighted boldly in the synopsis of this book, since although the focus of Paul's missing never once faltered from the storyline but at times, it felt like it was Robin's story who is self centered to think about her lying husband and to carry on a hopeless journey in order to prove herself something. As a matter of fact, there is no mystery in this book, it's more like being on an edgy adventure in order to find a cheating husband. The characters, other than Robin I couldn't feel anyone's presence in this book, are well-developed and realistic. The story runs from Robin's POV and hence there's not much depth into the rest of the supporting cast of the story. Moreover, there were some characters whom I wanted to have a little bit of presence in the story to give it more weight and especially to sound real. Robin is a strong married woman who stops at nothing to find her husband who has been deluded by her husband's goodness for many years. Coming to Morocco, makes Robin realize that Paul is not a nice man, in fact he had been lying to her from the begining of time. The emotions are vividly captured in the book and their essence can be easily felt while reading the book. The book is a downward spiral to pain and grief and along with Robin's sadness, the book too pulls the readers in to the ocean of pain and sadness. I really loved how the author carefully developed Robin's character from hating her husband to finally finding peace within herself. In short, if you really like to read about an exotic story set in a yet more mystical destination layered with a bit of mystery and marital drama and lots of edgy adventures, then this book perfectly fits the bill.Verdict: Gripping and compelling and contemporary romance readers will have a great time while reading this book.

I also write paranormal, so was drawn to this book right away. It's gruesome, believable, and just sick enough that you hope never to encounter a psychopathic serial killer as sadistic and twisted as David. Ms. Martin has a great mind and weaves a tale as dark and disturbing as I've ever read. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone fascinated with murder mysteries about serial killers, or the paranormal. Most excellent!

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Loaded with suspense and wholly captivating... By Jim Goforth This review is from an ARC copy of Angie Martin’s ‘Conduit’.Some writers have the capacity to snare you from the word go and hold you in thrall throughout the entire duration of a book. Angie Martin is one of those writers.‘Conduit’ is an absorbing psychological thriller of a work which blends in more than a little splash of the paranormal as it gets underway with a suitably creepy and curious prologue setting the tone of the book and sinking claws of intrigue in from the word go.After this tense and dark intro, Martin then introduces us to the principal character of Emily Malone, who is a private investigator of Malone and Reid Investigators (the Reid section completed by business partner, Cassie Reid, another pivotal character). While these ladies have spent seven years together in business contending with the standard sort of cases one might expect from the private investigation game such as suspicious women certain their husbands are in the midst of illicit affairs and so forth, the psychic abilities of Emily are about to go into overdrive on a case that will endanger their lives and others involved with them.Running parallel to Emily’s psychic gifts pushing to the fore leading to her being haunted by voices and subject to apparent automatic writing, is the story of detective Lieutenant Lionel Edwards who is on the trail of a serial killer leaving a trail of dead bodies strewn across his jurisdiction, mutilated young women each left with a letter carved into their skin.Suffice to say, these problems plaguing Emily pull her into the murderous world of insidious murderer David Noakes, pitching her into an epic nightmare, considering she is his chief target, somebody he fully believes he has a connection with.‘Conduit’ is full of interesting, engaging characters, even the immensely flawed ones such as the sadistic fiend responsible for the abductions and murders, and great interactions between them. The subplot involving Emily’s burgeoning relationship with Jake Hanley, as well as her exchanges with former flame Nathan temper the grimness and building tension created by the cat and mouse game with the killer.Without wanting to add any spoilers here, you need to read this yourself to see just how this whole enthralling concoction pans out, I will just say that this is the type of crime thriller laced with supernatural facets that can seize you and shake you up, and make you only too aware that there are some truly reprehensible characters out there.Tightly written, loaded with suspense and wholly captivating, this is a cracking good read.

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. I tried hard not to sympathise with the serial killer but... By Hanna I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for my fair and honest review. And I must say – it might be a long book but it definitely is a quick read! It's really gripping, and if you're a fan of suspense, you will just dive in!In fact, you have three plot-lines here. First, there's the one concentrating on the killer who is my personal favourite in this story. Smart and strong (and creepy) but in a way interesting and intriguing. Probably raising more questions than answering them. With every bit he's revealing more about himself but it doesn't mean he's easier to understand. Then there's the main character, Emily Monroe, who discovers a strange, paranormal connection to the killer. She's a private investigator who needs to decide - it's either her or those other innocent women. And then there's the police and their ways of dealing with the crime. Always my favourite part of crime fiction, and here – it's thorough and intense as a crime story can get.I'm not going to spoil the plot for you. But if you want to read something that will make you uneasy when staying home alone in the evening – Conduit is the story to read. There's crime, there's a paranormal twist, there's an intriguing killer and a strong main character... what else to want? Enjoy!

Sting of the Drone: A Novel, by Richard A. Clarke

From Booklist Clarke has served in the White House so his expertise in counterterrorism brings a sense of reality to what might have been just another technothriller showcasing the military and its high-tech weaponry. A drone is utilized on a Kill Call and explodes over its target successfully. But a survivor demands justice and is able to use his connections to put targets on the operators of the drones. Remote operators used to watching events thousands of miles away are suddenly being picked off one by one. Clarke does a terrific job showcasing how the drone program works and revealing something about the men and women behind the scenes who use the machines. Readers who enjoy learning about technology but who don’t mind that the characters are secondary will eat this up. Clarke’s name alone will guarantee some demand. --Jeff Ayers

Review

“Sting of the Drone explores a premise that members of the intelligence community have been kicking around for years: What would happen if the targets on the receiving end of a killer drone decided to strike back? As you read Sting of the Drone you get the sense that it isn't fiction at all. Clarke has written a classic in the genre of what is known as insider fiction--a novel or, more often, a thriller inspired by real episodes…Sting of the Drone stands above the rest…This is riveting reading.” ―The Washington Post

“What Tom Clancy did for submarines, Richard A. Clarke does for drones. Fascinating and frightening, Sting of the Drone moves as fast as the new kind of warfare that it depicts, with authentic details that only someone with the author's impressive insider credentials could know. This first-rate thriller…a cross between a techno-thriller and a docu-thriller, ought to be required reading for anyone who wants to know the current status of the battle against terrorism.” ―David Morrell

“Sting of the Drone is a jet-fueled race through a world where the sky itself can be your worst enemy.” ―Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“Insider knowledge of politics paired with amazing state-of-the-art technical details fuels this realistic nonstop action thriller…[Clarke] has set the standard by which all such titles in this growing subgenre will be measured.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“On rare occasions a thriller comes along that turns out to be prophecy: Sting of the Drone is one of them. This rip-snorting thriller may be the best unclassified peek you will ever get on the new high-tech offensive in the war against terrorism. A seminal, prophetic, troubling must-read.” ―Stephen Coonts

“Clarke does a terrific job showcasing how the drone program works and revealing something about the men and women behind the scenes who use the machines.” ―Booklist

“This one smacks so much of reality you'll swear it's real. Written in a deft hand, by a man who knows what he's talking about, the take-no-prisoners plot serves up a banquet of high drama, action, and adventure. A great read.” ―Steve Berry

“It's rare a novel is written ahead of the headlines, but the plot of Sting of the Drone is just that book. If you've wondered what it's like to be inside the U.S. Predator drone program, your wait is over. Prepare for your hand to take hold of the joy stick, your heart to lodge firmly in your throat. Tom Clancy takes to the air. Put this book on your radar.” ―Ridley Pearson

“Exciting and disturbing…There may be no better person to write this story than Clarke, who brings his deep subject knowledge to the pages.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Sting of the Drone is a riveting page-turner that goes deep into the complex world of those who hunt with, and are hunted by, military drones. Rich with detail and informed by his expertise in national security, Richard Clarke brings this hidden world to vivid life.” ―Jeff Abbott

29 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Ideas, Wooden Storytelling By Kevin Joseph Richard Clarke's Sting of the Drone is a fictionalized examination of the Obama Administration's use of remotely-piloted aircraft (commonly referred to as drones) as our preferred way to eliminate potential terrorists around the world. To Clarke's credit, he provides a fairly balanced look at the arguments in favor of and against this program, letting the reader decide whether the global war on terrorism is an end that justifies what amounts to targeted assassinations of those perceived to pose a threat to U.S. interests. As is often the case in these types of novels, however, the characters, plot and setting seem to exist only as a way to help frame the author's arguments and showcase insider knowledge. The choppy chapters, constantly flitting between viewpoints of multiple characters, also prevent the novel from developing an effective flow and make it difficult to form a bond with any of the protagonists. So five stars for the ideas and fascinating insider details, two stars for the storytelling, resulting in a three-star overall rating.

Great premise from a talented author By SarahSmith I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.First off I have to say this story had so much promise and I was very interested to read it. I have heard great things about Richard A. Clarke, even though I have not yet read anything by him, and was very eager to read one of his works. That said I can only give this 3 stars (2.5 if this was allowed). The idea of the story was very interesting and relevant and hooked me from the excerpt, unfortunately the narrative style and the shear number of characters introduced throughout the book had me losing interest. The narrative style did not instill any connection to the characters or events for me. The amount of characters introduced throughout the book was also problematic for me, it was hard to keep them all straight. I was about 1/3 of the way through the book before I really started to feel like the story was grabbing me, but again with the narrative style and the numerous characters it was hard to hold my interest. The last few chapters were amazing though, and that's why I gave this book three stars. The ending was very well done and thought provoking. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up with the possibilities of what could/will/might happen. If you're already a fan of Richard A. Clarke you will most likely love this. Unfortunately for me this was just not my cup of tea.

Decency is a more exhausting state than its opposite By michael a. draper Readers curious about the U.S. Predator program can get an insider's look with this dandy novel. The book explodes with action as Clarke describes the leading pilots of the drones and the intelligence personnel who run the program. There has been such success with drone strikes that one of the Arab leaders calls a meeting. He is the leader of the Qazzani Cartel who deal in heroin, weapons, gold and electronics. They also enjoy killing Americans. They have a two fold plan which is to happen at Christmas time. On one hand bombs will go off in key American cities, in the other, with the help of Ukrainian computer hackers, they will strike against the drone pilots and destroy drones on the ground.Clarke details the successes of the drone program but also conveys the bad publicity that sometimes occurs. He also describes the meetings in Washington where suitable targets are chosen. He demonstrates how friendly countries have benefited from the drones taking out terrorist who had planned to take actions to destabilize the governments. This is so successful that the Cartel devises a way to set up a drone strike that made it look like the US doesn't care about the innocent lives lost. The leaders of the drone program also have to deal with politicians who have forgotten what happened on 9-11 and want to curtail drone activity. Intelligence personnel object to this and feel that it's the best program we have. This action based novel shows good suspense as we follow the activities of the terrorists as they take actions in the days prior to Christmas and we wonder how the terrorists can be identified and stopped.
