About the Author Ossie Hopkins read Literature at Durham, and then taught English and rock climbing in a seventies comprehensive. He progressed to management - apprentice to the chief education officer, proofreading. Just when you thought you were learning to write along came the big blue pencil. A Master's at Manchester helped the career, but not the writing.As deputy director with Birmingham LEA he produced plenty of sound-bites for the dailies, Central TV and Pebble Mill but somehow never got round to 'real' writing.Later he became throttlebottom-in-chief at Ribble Valley Council. My, but it was cold up there. And lonely. Maybe if we turned things upside down... Now we can see how many people we're there to support. So leadership is just like teaching - helping people grow. Must get round to writing some of this down. Whoops! Palace revolution! Ossie leaves the same way he arrived: fired with enthusiasm!Still, one door closes... And here's a brand new international institute for customer service looking for advocacy in the public sector. Further corridors-of-power to tramp, but again, more PowerPoint than authorship!At last... The opportunity! Supporting his son's haulage business with eighteen-hour days on the road, Ossie can no longer avoid the challenge of that first book in the series...

So I was flattered and nervous when he asked that I consider writing a review for Chalk for Cheese. I had read much of the first draft when he decided to do a serious rewrite. I was anxious to see the final book. It was worth the wait.It is a coming of age story in post WWII Britain of two very different children. Jay comes from a supportive upper middle-class family, Jill comes from Geordie working class family struggling to make it. Each separate chapter provides an increasing amount of detail in the life of either Jay or Jill. The accumulation of their experiences and the passage of time forms each child's growth and the reader's interest moves along with them at a quick pace. And along the way one learns about English geography, ornithology, rock climbing, contemporary music and literature and and the reader gets to recall and relive the anxieties of their own coming of age story. But they live very separate lives and the reader must agonize about when, how and if they will meet. Surely, they meet and fall in love? Right? Will they? I know the answer but I am not telling. It is a fun read and I encourage one to take a chance on a new author telling a good story.And yes, Jill's last line in the book is true!
