This is a work of historical fiction and follows the founding of the Roman Republic and its forcible ejection of the corrupt Monarchy. The time of the story is in the 6th century B.C.E, long before that favorite trio of fiction writers of ancient Rome - Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony and Cleopatra - whose actions caused the fall of the Republic. It is the story of a fictional character but within the framework of the historical record (what little there is) and includes the well known names of that time, including Lucius Junius Brutus and Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus, the first Consuls of the Republic, and Tarquinius Superbus, the overbearing King with the insatiable appetite for conquest. And of course, the person of Lucretia, the wife of Collatinus - that woman of many romantic myths and tragic tales of that time.

A good story with problems By Doug Huestis, author "The Three Talents of Timothy O'Dowd" I would give the author 4 stars for the story, but only 1 for the writing. It's a good story about an interesting period of history, namely the end of the Roman monarchy, about which little is known. But the title is misleading; the story is not about the founder of Rome, which was a couple of centuries earlier. Scene transitions are often bewildering as are the shifts of point of view, leaving the reader wondering exactly who is speaking or thinking at the moment. All the same, the action carries the story forward and the reader wants to continue. The story doesn't really end, leaving the protagonist wandering in the bush, ruminating. I suppose a sequel is expected. And the characters are all too perfect, especially the protagonist, who never makes a mistake, has an ignoble thought, or has anything he tries go wrong. Nobody in the real or historic world is ever that lucky, especially not an ignorant kid from the sticks.That said, the editing is terrible, rife with misspellings, wrong word usage (e.g., "shown" for "shone", "lay" for "lie", the kind of stuff missed by the spell-checker). A lot of the mistakes would have been picked up by the author himself, if he had only shut the door and read the ms aloud to his dog. And the Latin is so full of errors it's impossible to list all of them. AUC stands for "Ab Urbe Condita," not "ab urbe conduit." And the plural of "adiutor" is "adiutores," not "adiutorae." Words like "hastilarius" are spelled differently at different times. The author applies a feminine plural ending "-ae" for almost all plurals, masculine, feminine or neuter.Mr Farmer, before you publish a sequel, if that is your intention, please get a competent editor (after you've read the ms aloud to yourself). And do find a college Latin teacher to go over the Latin words and phrases.

Excellent Novel of the Early Period of Rome By NoseInBook This is the first historical novel of ancient Rome that I have read that was set in the period of the early kings. As the author notes in the introductory material, almost nothing is known that is grounded in fact--most has been handed down through myth and later written accounts of the time. The author has done a wonderful job in making the characters and events feel authentic, while staying in the context of the generally accepted history of the time. The central character is almost too good to be true, and has some amazing good luck along the course of the story, but he also deals with personal tragedies as the course of his life and career unfolds. Something I especially appreciated is that the violence of armed conflicts was kept to a reasonable level, rather than endless gory details being described minutely. The novel is a bargain at 99 cents, being 572 pages long. There are a few errors that could have been caught by an editor, but they are not really distracting. The story kept my interest throughout and I was sorry to see it end. All in all, a tremendous bargain for those of us who love novels of this genre.

Examples include major character names changing throughout the book: Ennis vs. Ennius and Manlius vs. Manius. There is repetitive word usage and frequent mistakes. Muslim is not a fabric, it is a religious identification while the cotton type weaving material is MusliN. The home of Herdonius is first described as a "spacious dwelling" but 2-3 pages later the reader is confused by the line "the villa was small".The author has good stories but it is as if he never gives his work a reread. The mistakes are lazy and are a detriment. I found the same in his first book but hoped this would be better.
