The fifth novel in the epic Clifton Chronicles series.

When the bomb goes off, how many passengers on the Buckingham lose their lives? You will only find out if you read the opening chapter of Mightier than the Sword.

When Harry visits his publisher in New York, he's told that he's been elected the new president of English PEN and immediately launches a campaign for the release of a fellow author, Anatoly Babakov, who's imprisoned in a Russian gulag in Siberia. Babakov's crime? Writing a book called Uncle Joe, an insight into what it was like to work as the interpreter for Josef Stalin. So determined is Harry to see Babakov released and the book published, he puts his own life in danger.

Emma Clifton, now the chairwoman of Barrington Shipping, is facing the repercussions of the IRA attack on the Buckingham. Some board members feel she should resign, but Sebastian Clifton, newly elected to the board, is determined that she'll remain chairwoman. Sir Giles Barrington is now a minister of the crown and looks set for even higher office until an official trip to Berlin does not end as a diplomatic success. Once again Giles' political career is thrown off balance by none other than his old adversary, Major Alex Fisher, who, for the second time, is selected to stand against him at the general election. But who wins this time? Sebastian asks his American girlfriend to marry him, and she happily accepts only to break off the engagement when she discovers what Seb has been up to behind her back.

Mightier than the Sword ends with two courtroom trials. One is a libel case held at the High Court in London, a fierce battle between Emma Clifton and Lady Virginia Fenwick, and no one can believe how far Virginia will go to make sure she wins. The second, a show trial, takes place in Russia after Harry is arrested as a spy. Thus continues volume five of the Clifton Chronicles.

This is Jeffrey Archer's most accomplished work to date, with all the trademark twists and turns that have made him one of the most popular authors in the world.

Whilst I love Jeffrey Archer's books and I came away from this happy that I took the time to read it, I honestly thought it was a bit predictable and not the best in the series. This book, in my opinion, was more of a fill in than anything else. We find out some interesting things that were previously unmentioned, but I didn't really feel like this story was anything all that new or impressive. I suppose in the course of the series you have to have a book or two that just explain and tie things together, and I think this was it.The writing was still solid and the characters as realistic and well thought as always, but I just didn't love this one.It wasn't bad and if you have read the rest of the series then you will undoubtedly want to read this one too, but do yourself a favour and don't start with this book. Definitely not a standalone novel. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

By Ray Kelly Mightier Than The Sword by Jeffrey Archer is the fifth book in the interesting Clifton Chronicles Series. Archer is a terrific story teller and master of intrigue, and this book is again an interesting read. As with the other books in the series, the book ends on a cliff hanger, which I found disappointing as this book was originally supposed to be the final book in the series. We’ve since found out that there will be another two books. With that said, it is well written, fast paced with well-developed realistic characters and several twists in the tale. Although not as impressive or as creative as his earlier works, it’s still an engaging tale of good vs evil with constant power struggles, betrayals and political maneuvers. Again the lives of Harry, Emma, Giles and now Sebastian are explored and their relationships with the reader tested. As the story develops, Archer provides a masterful display of shifting sympathies within the Clifton and Barrington families as we start to wonder whether are all still Protagonists. The book begins where the fourth book in the series left off, and the first five chapters resolve the issues surrounding the bombing of the Buckingham. The sixth chapter opens an entirely new area of interest with a fascinating reminder of the Cold War and the developments in the Communist bloc, and the action moves swiftly between continents. Although I found this volume to be a bit more predictable and repetitive than the others, this is a must read for any fan of Jeffrey Archer. If you haven’t read any of the Clifton Chronicles than I suggest you start with A Time To Tell.

And we have to wait another year. Really a bad concept these continuing drawn out sagas are. A year in between each is unacceptable. Suggest no one read until all seven are out.
