First off, Ms. Woolf, a lot of the language was way too modern! Second, we hear too much of what a bad a.. place Deadwood is (the dots is so I don't use offensive language in my review), we got it after the first ten times. Thirdly, one minute you have the h talking big, bad, and tough to the H and the next acting like a wimp to her father, what? I understand the child inside still wanting the love or approval of a parent, but really, taking daily beatings and at the age the h is suppose to be? And where was all the big toughness then? Why would she put up with it? Oh, yes, for the claim, even though we heard how she stashed gold from her father daily. Still, not enough to leave? Are you crazy? I'm sorry but I couldn't swallow this claptrap! Going to try to get my money back!!!!!!

I like depth in the books I read and to feel like I'm there. I want to know what they see, smell, and feel. I never felt that. It had potential, but I was left wishing for more. I agree with the other person that said the ending was disappointing. The book is all about Jakes murder charges and Becky's abusive father, but it ends very quickly. A build up to......nothing. I really wanted to like it. It had good parts and I am interested to see if there will be more stories about the brothers. But like I said its not a favorite and I wouldn't pay more than a dollar or two for it. It does have two bedroom scenes. They are pretty explicit but are only a couple pages long. I had hoped for a little more build up to that as well, but it was pretty rushed into. They were married first but when he found out she didn't want sex, that was a perfect opportunity to seduce her. But she warmed up to it quickly after all. I guess in my opinion the author rushed the story and missed a lot of places that could have been interesting. Don't want give to bad of a review because it could just be my personal preferences that kept me from liking the book more.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Three stars. By Karen Talley This book should have been great. It had all the necessary 'ingredients.' Somehow it just fell flat. The character development was not good. I just never felt any connection with any of them. And, although the plot started out great, it went on a downhill slide. **** Spoiler alert**** It was just difficult for me to believe that a man who held his dying fiance in his arms after she had been brutally raped and shot could instantly be attracted to a dirty young woman dressed as a man. ( Just five months later.) So much so that he worked her claim and gave her the gold he found instead of helping his brothers on their own claim. And the oral sex was a real ick for me. Couldn't they have jumped in the creek first? BTW, back then, cathouse workers who supplied oral sex were actually looked down on by the other ladies of the evening so it is always a little bit of a shock to find characters 'indulging' in this way in a period novel. *****end spoilers**** I did a lot of skimming to finish the book only to find the ending to be a big jump into ....nothing. There was no real resolution to the origin of the story line. Everything was just solved. How? We aren't told. I hate that!Language and sex may be a problem for some readers..

The Whale Chaser is the story of Vince Sansone, the eldest child and only son in a large Italian-American family, who comes of age in 1960s Chicago. A constant disappointment to his embittered father—a fishmonger who shows his displeasure with his fists—Vince finds solace by falling in love. Classmate Marie Santangelo, the neighborhood butcher’s winsome daughter, entices him with passionate kisses and the prospect of entering her family’s business. Yet he pursues Lucy Sheehan, an older girl with a “reputation,” who has also been victimized by the adults in her life.   When Vince abruptly flees Chicago he ends up in Tofino, a picturesque fishing town on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. First he works gutting fish, then is hired by Tofino’s most colorful dealer, Mr. Zig-Zag, and joins the thriving marijuana trade. Ultimately, through his friendship with Ignatius George, an Ahousaht native, he finds his calling as a whale guide.   Vince must come to terms with the consequences of his actions as well as his family’s version of la storia segreta, the unspoken story of how his grandfather, like thousands of other Italians and Italian-Americans, was evacuated from prohibited zones on the West Coast and, along with hundreds of others, interned in a prison camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Set in the turbulent decades of the Vietnam War and the drug and hippie counterculture, The Whale Chaser is a powerful story about the possibility of redemption.

The Whale Chaser: A Novel, by Tony Ardizzone

Review “The Whale Chaser is a masterful merger of history, metaphor and metaphysics, explanation and confession. Ardizzone's eye, ear and recollection are incredible. . . . His precise language more than describes; it turns scenes of both violence and love into incredible experiences.”  —David Bradley, author, The Chaneysville Incident and winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction“[Ardizzone] has a knack of saying out loud what you’ve always felt and never put into words. . . . Through sin, redemption, death and resurrection, Ardizzone’s latest goes deep into the 1960s and ’70s to give us a tale worthy of our attention.”  —Fred Gardaphé, author of From Wiseguys to Wise Men“A sumptuous and inspirational read. . . . With The Whale Chaser Ardizzone has achieved his masterpiece, and at the same time—off-handedly, with true sprezzatura—one of the two or three greatest novels ever of the Italian American quandary.”  —John Domini, author of Earthquake I.D.“Ardizzone’s latest novel stretches over decades and miles, from the crowded North Side of Chicago to the haunting waters of British Columbia. The book sends home the complicated, elusive beauty of the struggle toward self-comprehension—with insights as illuminating and breathtaking as a whale’s sudden breach.” —Angela Pneuman, author of Lay It on My Heart and Home Remedies“This lyrical, engaging novel is sensual, suspenseful, and full of crackling life. Tony Ardizzone, above all, is a marvelous chronicler of the joys of being alive. There’s plenty of peril too, and suspense, the human tragicomedy in all its nuanced complexity.” —Christine Sneed, author of Little Known Facts and Paris, He Said"Impressively well written from beginning to end, The Whale Chaser is a complex and deftly crafted novel that will linger in the mind and memory long after the book itself is finished and set back upon the shelf." —Midwest Book Review

From the Back Cover "The Whale Chaser is a masterful merger of story and history, metaphor and metaphysics, explanation and confession. Ardizzone's eye, ear and recollection are incredible; the story is not merely set in Catholic Chicago in the 1960s or in the counter-culture haven of Vancouver Island in the 1970s, it recreates those places and times -- idiom, states of mind, complexities of custom and religion and expectation and desperation. His precise language more than describes; it turns scenes of both violence and love into incredible experiences." -- David Bradley, author of The Chaneysville Incident "Ardizzone has a knack of saying out loud what you've always felt and never put into words.... Through sin, redemption, death and resurrection, Ardizzone's latest goes deep into the 1960s and '70s to give us a tale worthy of our attention." -- Fred Gardaphé, author of From Wiseguys to Wise Men "A sumptuous and inspirational read. . . . With The Whale Chaser Tony Ardizzone has achieved his masterpiece, and at the same time -- off-handedly, with true sprezzatura -- one of the two or three greatest novels ever of the Italian-American quandary." -- John Domini, author of Earthquake I.D.

At home the teenage Vince Sansone struggles for space among three damaged immigrant generations in a single Chicago brownstone, yet out in the streets the `60s have begun to exert their own pressures, even more formidable. The American dream seems a specter. The clueless Marie may cuddle sweetly in the back seats of the cars awaiting repair in her brother's garage, yet she's more of the same "big mousetrap" of a neighborhood, snaring Vince more painfully. Yet once the boy escapes -- how powerful the remorse! So his story cartwheels back and forth between 'Nam-burdened America and flower-power Canada, between monsters from the last World War (the deportations and confiscations that still haunt Italian Americans) and the freaks of the late '60s (the blonde and willowy Harmony may take Vince to bed, but she also, firmly, puts the "greaser" in his place). It's all a big, two-hearted odyssey. Whatever our voyager's port of call, he comes up against a leviathan. Each time our young man achieves some kind of sentimental education, better yet, he renders these discoveries with an avidity that shifts and matures but never loses its receptivity to awe. Whether Vince is taking a punch, tripping on good Pacific NW acid, or simply out hatless in the wet and cold, he can break rousingly into Kerouackian incantation. With THE WHALE CHASER Tony Ardizzone has achieved his masterpiece, and at the same time ---- off-handedly, with true *sprezzatura* -- -- one of the two or three greatest novels ever of the Italian-American quandary.

The non-linear story, rich sense of place (whether it be Chicago or Tofino), and the period details demand the reader enter Vince's world and become completely engrossed. Your attention does not stray from the page; in many ways it's a mystery, or page turner---the reader continues reading the Chicago sections to see exactly what Vince is going to do with the girls in his life, as well as his family, and the Tofino sections are a way to draw out/add to the mystery. Readers will not be disappointed!

In some ways, this is a work about commitments - taken on, broken, revised, forgotten, remembered, cherished. But a writer's commitment stands out amongst them all. This is a novel where the novelist's commitment is palpable in every important character and significant detail. The non-linear narrative is expertly handled and imbues the work with an appealing cinematic quality that never subverts or trivializes the characters, set pieces, and subjects. At the center of it all, however, is Vince Sansone - a superb, layered creation. Far from being Ardizzone's mouthpiece, Sansone is a compelling, three-dimensional force. The character is likewise well equipped as a vehicle for Ardizzone to explore the novel's thematic concerns.Novels like this are increasingly rare. As in life, something is always at stake, even if the characters can't always put their finger quite on what those stakes are. From a craftsmanship standpoint, Ardizzone is working at or near the peak of his powers here and his unerring instinct for what constitutes significant detail is delightful.Highly recommended.

READERS' REVIEWS OF H A CULLEY’S PREVIOUS NOVELS – THE ROBERT THE BRUCE TRILOGY ***** I love historical fiction, and this trilogy is fitting the bill very nicely. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys this genre. ***** Thoroughly enjoyed all three books. From to first page to the last page was exciting and keep me reading. Would recommend them to anyone. ***** Anyone familiar with the history of this time period will know how events will pan out but one still feels a good deal of suspense as one reads some of the precarious situations into which various characters find themselves. This book does indeed become a page turner. I shall now go on to read the final book in the trilogy with eager anticipation. BOOK DESCRIPTION This is the first novel of a trilogy charting Constantine the Great’s rise to power as the first Christian Emperor of Rome. It is seen through the eyes of Titus, an officer in his bodyguard and the military tutor of his young son, Crispus. When Titus meets Flavia, one of Constantine’s female agents, on a secret mission to find an unguarded pass through the Alps, he falls in love. His struggle to win her as his wife is more difficult than any military campaign. When Constantine marries Fausta Titus has to protect the young Crispus from his scheming step-mother and ensure that he retains his position as his father’s heir. Heavily outnumbered, Constantine wins a series of battles against his rival for the throne of the Western Empire and enters Rome in triumph with Crispus by his side. He gives his young son command of the fleet at Ravenna but when he, Titus and Flavia arrive there, they find it has been seized by men supporting Licinius, Emperor of the East. Together they face their greatest challenge - to wrest control of the fleet back from the rebels.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Looks like a great series By Peter Hibbert I enjoyed the Hammurabi series because as well as being an easy read it dealt with a subject that was relatively untouched. And I am happy to report that the author has done it again. It is really surprising that Constantine, one of Rome's greatest emporers, has hardly been dealt with by fiction writers. It is not a long book and covers a period from Constantius Chloras meeting Helena to Milvian Bridge. Accoordingly, there is not a lot of detail, so the novel is basically a historical primer with a fast paced story. Highly recommended and I will certainly purchase the next two books of the trilogy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Informative and Interesting Historical Novel By James Dainis This novel deals with the rise to power of Constantine the Great as seen through the eyes of Artorus Titus who joins the Roman cavalry as a young man. He quickly rises to command after saving Constantine's life and is given more responsibilities as an envoy and secret agent as well as military tutor to Constantine's young son, Crispus. After many battles the novel ends with Constantine's final battle and triumphant entry into Rome to be declared Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. There is a lot of political and military strategy in this novel. There is a good deal of battle tactics but not much of the blood and gore of the battle scenes. Titus is a loyal soldier who does his best for Constantine and takes pride in tutoring Crispus in the military arts and also does his best to protect him from his step mother. She would hope to have her own son by Constantine and eliminate Crispus so her son would be the next heir. There is a bit of romance as Titus falls in love with a female secret agent while they are on a spying mission together. This all makes for a fascinating and informative historical novel and I look forward to reading the next novel in the series.

Long, bloody, graphic, exciting, twisting, scary epic fantasy about a chosen one, saving the world, and first year of college By Barb Taub What if Harry Potter didn’t know about magic until he went to college? And what if (along with almost everything else to do with dorm life as a freshman) Hogwarts turned out to be more horror story than dark fantasy, and Harry’s fellow students had a tendency to end up as ketchup? Why am I going into all of this? Well, I was giving it lots of thought as I read The Felix Chronicles: Freshman. I made it through the (long) preface, helped by a warning that it would all make sense later, and that Felix would (eventually) show up. I went through (and then started skipping over) descriptions of beautiful young girls murdered, Bad Things happening in the woods, and a bunch of other disturbing situations, all mixed with the story of Felix’s first year in college. Going away to school can be hard enough, but Felix is still in emotional meltdown following the tragic death of his parents. But balanced against that is what I think of as the single most useful fantasy trope ever: The Chosen One—in which destiny chooses an ordinary person to be the only one who can save the world as we know it. I’m very sincere here. Without this workhorse trope, we would be missing an unending stream of classics from the bible to the Iliad to Harry Potter, Dune, The Matrix, The Belgariad, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Star Wars, and on and on.So is The Felix Chronicles horror or dark fantasy? Yes. It’s a long, bloody, graphic, exciting, twisting, scary story about The Chosen One. Felix finds truths about himself, his parents’ deaths, and his friends—but mostly he finds out about being the one who has to save the world. Even more interesting is his relationship with his best friend, the seemingly-ordinary (or not?) Allison, plus his new roommate, friends, and one very odd groundskeeper at Portland College. He tangles with serial killers, monsters, his own memories, ancient assassins, their descendants, and the seriously stubborn Allison. And that’s just during freshman year. For me, the book was a bit too long, with too much gruesomely depicted death and carnage. I’m not sure we needed all those bad guys, all that blood, and all those twists. But having said that, I would give The Felix Chronicles four stars out of five. The writing itself is very good, with wonderfully chilling descriptions and settings. And after those five hundred pages, Felix still has questions to be answered, monsters to battle, and three more years of college ahead.*I received this book for free from the publisher or author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.*

The book was received in exchange for an honest and critical review.R.T. Lowe: The Felix Chronicles – Freshmen. Paperback. Review by AR Neal, author of After, and flash fiction novel reviewer (http://www.everydayfiction.com/flashfictionblog/category/staff/andree-robinson-neal/)For urban fantasy fans seeking a change from what has become typical fare, R.T. Lowe presents Freshmen, the first book in The Felix Chronicles series. It is appropriate that a novel, whose prologue begins in the year A.D. 336, would have such heft. At 494 pages, Felix is not for the weak-hearted. The first chapter, The Warning, gives readers a glimpse into the history of a secret battle between … good and evil … perhaps. The search for a particularly valuable young man begins during the reign of Constantine, but Lowe does not stay in the distant past for long; the reader is whisked through a pulse-quickening exchange between factions that includes a supernatural fight worthy of the big screen, to ‘today’ and are introduced to the primary cast of characters: Felix and Allison seem to be two ordinary freshman students and the description of orientation at Portland College will bring back memories for those who have had the pleasure. However, Felix is not the ordinary young adult embarking on his first experience away from home – it is revealed that his parents were killed in a mysterious accident that has left Felix in a perpetual state of despair. Allison, his hometown friend and confidante, comes with her own familial baggage as a foster child. But more on them in a bit.Lowe is an expert at scene-shifting. After an idyllic view of Allison and Felix’s introduction to PC, the first darkness appears. The Faceman, Nick Blair, is more than a mindless serial killer. He leaned forward and his lips crept slowly back over his gums, revealing gold teeth filed to sharp points. He reached out with one hand, and Angela’s eyes bulged as fingers the size of corn cobs stabbed at her face (p. 26).His sense of purpose and dedication to his mission would be admirable in other contexts. Yet the descriptions of the Faceman’s brutality are frighteningly breathtaking, but he is not the worst creature in this epic tale.Felix is infused with humor as well. Lucas Mayer, Felix’s roommate, appeared in a reality television show. His wit and banter lighten the mood at just the right points. By the book’s mid-way point, Lucas has not only endeared himself to Felix, Allison, and their other two friends Harper and Caitlin, but has attracted attention from across campus in ways that are unexpected and believable. The exchange with his stalker is something that anyone who watches entertainment news could imagine but its outcome is a jaw-dropper.There is a visual quality to this story that makes it more than fiction. Descriptions of the ‘dead campus’, Woodrow’s Room, no-man’s land, and Ashfield Forest are vivid and a read of the secret tunnels beneath St. Rose chapel are sure to inspire claustrophobic dreams.Felix gasped and stumbled back. This was no ordinary wall. Below each plaque there was a rectangular impression etched into the concrete like a pencil mark on a piece of paper. He knew what this was. These were storage lockers. Storage lockers for bodies. He was looking at coffins. They were crammed into the wall from top to bottom, and their reach appeared to extend as far as the tunnel itself (p. 146).While most of the text focuses on Felix, Allison, Lucas, Harper, and Caitlin, other players – including playboy actor Dirk Rathman, wealthy entrepreneur Lofton Ashfield, mysterious groundskeeper Bill Stout, birthday girl Mia, and the ‘people’ who stalk Ashfield Forest are present and memorable. “Are you going to hurt me?” she asked timidly.“Yes.” He smiled, his lips curving up into sharp peaks at the corners like a crescent moon tilted on its side. “I’m going to eat you.” … He opened his mouth and cocked his head like he was going to kiss her.Mia knew what was coming next and there was nothing she could do to prevent it. Nana was right, she thought, horrified, staring into the mouth of the shark. Nana was right. Nana was— (p. 294).Felix is built on relationships, which draws readers in. The character Felix’s up-and-down relationships with his friends, fellow football team members, and Bill – as well as his emotional relationships with his parents and his past – make the text come alive. There is just enough historical reference to the Dresdian and the Belus (the two powers at war) and their powers to keep the story in the realm of fantasy while the references to modern revolutionaries (the ERA, whose focus is environmental and ecological justice), college kids and their antics, and social issues offer the urban grounding.By the last quarter of the text, Lowe has readers on a roller coaster of emotions and experiences as Felix learns who he is. Allison gets to see how his powers work, first hand, and Felix gains new respect for his best friend. As the first book in this series comes to a close, there are more questions than answers: how do the ‘people’ in Ashfield Forest figure into the battle between the Dresdian and the Belus? Who is Bill and which side is he on? Is Felix ‘the one’ or not? The self-proclaimed extremely dangerous individual on the last page is certainly not the same young freshman introduced in the beginning and readers will anticipate the next volume to discover more about Felix’s path to success or destruction.

By My So-Called Book Reviews I am a huge fan of YA/Fantasy books that have the ability to actually pull in the YA male audience and keep them wanting to read. There are some great series out there that boys, teens and men can get into like Harry Potter, Maximum Ride, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones but the problem with these series is that the first two is read by most boys before they enter high school and the other two are typically read after. Sure, I know there’s some guys that will read LOTR and GOT during high school but most of the ones I’ve talked to about it say they’re just too long and complicated to keep their attention. So where are the great fantasy series that girls will naturally gobble up and that guys age 15-18 can get equally excited for?? Enter The Felix Chronicles: Freshmen by R.T. Lowe. While reading this I kept thinking “finally, finally!!” this is something I can recommend to ALL our teens that walk in the school library looking for something a little different, a little dark, and a little more. This is the story of Felix, a college freshmen who is having to learn how to manage life after the death of his parents. He’s attending Portland College and is starting to make a few friends as he settles into the college life despite his recent grief. I really enjoyed Felix’s character, he’s such an all-around likeable guy and portrayed very realistically. The supporting cast of characters are equally enjoyable and were wonderfully fleshed out and real. My favorite of course was Allison, Felix’s best friend from home who’s always stood by him. I loved that there was no love triangle in this story although I wouldn’t be upset to see Felix and Allison together by the end of the series ;)Despite the seemingly good times of college life darkness is beginning to spread and strange things are starting to happen, very strange indeed! There’s a sinister serial killer on the loose, one that I have to admit was rather fascinating and I really wanted more of! People are also disappearing into the woods; there are stalkers afoot, secret societies, scary monsters, magic and even assassins! Crazy right? And how does all of this relate together? It’s all tied somehow to Felix, although he really has no idea. I really don’t want to give too much of the storyline and plot away, this is one where it’s best to know just the basics going in. You may be a little confused at first but be patient and have faith in R.T. Lowe, trust him because this author really knows what he’s doing here! Everything he writes has a purpose and a meaning, even if it’s not clear right away.At nearly 500 pages, some would think The Felix Chronicles to be too long of a read but I actually want my fantasies to be big books, I feel you need it in order to get proper world building. Besides, this is an extremely fast-paced story full of tons of suspense and action! Be warned now, there is a ton of dark violence in this book, some of it quiet disturbing in a fantastically creepy sort of way  Yes, I love this type of creepiness! One of the things I loved most though was all the fast-paced fantasy and horror stuff that was then mixed with plenty of humor, so refreshing! So, is The Felix Chronicles the perfect read for teen girls and guys, ones that are looking for something with a little meat that walks along the darker side of fantasy? Absolutely! This is an extremely exciting, terrifically twisted, blood curdling good time! I’m so glad to have been given the chance to read it and I’m looking forward to digging in to book 2 as soon as it comes out! I will absolutely be recommending Felix for fans of dark fantasy ages 14 & up and it’s one that I’d LOVE to see stocked in our school library as soon as possible!Thank you so much to Xpresso Book Tours and to author, R.T. Lowe for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Lunatic asylums were an inescapable hangover of Victorian Britain and they harnessed a certain stigma borne from an environment of fear and shame as well as the great unknown. For many families the asylum system helped create their darkest 'skeletons', and for Thomas (Tommy) Compton, it was unforgiving. In 1929 he was 23 years old when his mother had him sent to the Brookwood Lunatic Asylum in Surrey, his only ailment - a simple speech defect. Based on Tommy's own diary notes, The Asylum Soul is a disturbing account of an innocent young life ripped apart by unthinkable institutional failings, false hope and ultimate family betrayal.

The book brings a patients' diary to life, revealing his unfortunate confinement and with it the reality of the regime, and that of its lost souls. The book, as those who have actually read it can confirm, is set out like a diary, not chapters. The reading experience thus a journey through this man Tommy's time in Brookwood, as well as the world around him, and indeed in this tentative era between the wars. It is also reflective of a time of learning, identity and above all hope.A fantastic read! I hope the author produces more of this quality.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Art of the Intelligent Villain By Patrick Patterson It is said that you are measured by your opposition, and that's exactly right. In any good story with a strong hero, the villain has to be good at being bad. What Rain has done is develop characters as the story unfolds (all flawed...you know...human), while at the same time demonstrating the intelligence of men who choose the wrong the path. What makes this book (and many of his other westerns) interesting is the planning and patience of both the hero and the villain. It's character, intelligence, and a bit of luck that ultimately determines how the story ends, not being the fastest gun and having a bunch of others helping you.My only criticism of Raine is that he often spins his yarns around some romantic interest and then leaves the reader hanging at the end. And after reading how a guy busts his ass for several chapters (hunting and being hunted), sometimes I'd like a paragraph or two about how the heroine and/or the other characters got along now that the bad guys are dead. So often Raine's novels end a page or less after the last villain is killed, as if the other characters don't have an end of story to be told. If he's lucky, the hero will get a kiss (often his first) from the heroine and that's it. The story doesn't have to end with a sappy ending, but it should end with a cleaner rap up in some of his novels. You get to know his characters quite well (one of the endearing qualities of his novels), and when the novel ends, you sometimes wanna ask yourself..."WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED...?" I should add in fairness that this criticism DOES NOT apply to Bucky O'Connor.

By Gene Tate This is the best of many wonderful stories written by Mr. Raine, the good guys get the bad guys, it has some wonderful humor in it also, Sheriff Bear Trap Val Collins and Ranger Bucky O'Connor make a durable duo, the old hard covers written in l907 and l910 have 4 illustrations that really add to the book, I recall reading this type of book about 50 years ago as a youngster.

176 of 190 people found the following review helpful. High Adventure that Delivers! By J. K. Grice The word REVENANT is defined as "a person who returns, especially supposedly from the dead." There could be no better title for Michael Punke's high spirited western novel. In these pages, we discover historical fiction at its best. Though the book was published some years ago, it seems to be garnering more attention with a re-release, as well as anticipation of the movie THE REVENANT starring Leonardo DiCaprio, due out in January 2016. At any rate, the story centers around legendary "mountain man" Hugh Glass. The time period is the early 1820's, when traders and fur companies were searching out domains in the Rocky Mountains, and in the present day states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and the Dakotas. It is also a time only 18 years removed from the return of Lewis and Clark from the Pacific and the triumphs of the Corps of Discovery. Word had spread throughout our young nation of the vast areas of lands where a fortune might be made through the hunting and trapping of animals. The lust for furs, hides, and pelts to propitiate European buyers played a major role in this westward expansion. Thus, endeavors like The Rocky Mountain Fur Company sprang into existence and vied with one another to gain strong footholds in prime furbearer sections of the enormous Missouri Territory. Often, financial backing was based out of St. Louis, where teams of men were organized to venture up the Missouri River, as well as its tributaries. The book centers around one such team led by a Captain Henry and included such members as John Fitzgerald, Jim Bridger, and Hugh Glass. Along with surviving the harsh elements of the Wild, these men also had to defend themselves against hostile Indian tribes like the Arikara and the Blackfeet. In addition, there was great competition from the Spanish and French that added to the urgency of securing tracts of land rich for trapping. Much of what we know of these early "mountain men" is centered around both facts and legends. Hugh Glass, Jedediah Smith, and Jim Bridger were three of the first actual white men who ventured into the Rocky Mountains and beyond. In THE REVENANT, we are given an exciting glimpse into a very early and virgin American West. It is no secret that Hugh Glass was a central figure at the time, and he was indeed attacked by a grizzly bear and left for dead by his party. Punke does such a marvelous job of weaving fact and fiction together, and he elaborates on this merger at the novel's end. What I found most fascinating about this moving saga were the rich backgrounds we are given involving the histories of the major characters. We are treated to accounts not only of Glass, but also of Bridger, Fitzgerald, Henry, and the French voyageurs. The descriptions of the bear ordeal, of Glass's stoic determination, of the Indian attacks, and of survival in the brutal wilderness itself were absolutely compelling. Punke's knowledge and visceral prose make for story telling at its finest. If you enjoy films like JEREMIAH JOHNSON and books like UNDAUNTED COURAGE or CROW KILLER, I believe you will find THE REVENANT to be a splendid read that is well worth your time....

Compelling Summer Adventure Novel By A Customer Not only is The Revanant a compelling story about revenge, but it also is a story about the overwhelming human survival instinct, particularly in early frontier America. The historical story of Hugh Glass is amazing in and of itself, but The Revanant brings it to life. The book graphically describes the seemingly insurmountable obstacles faced by trapper Hugh Glass, first in trying to survive, then in seeking vengeance. You can almost feel Hugh Glass' shattered body.In addition to being a gripping story, The Revanant literally transports you to the wild, unpredictable American West of the 1820's. It is impeccably well researched with extensive and fascinating historical detail. It is a novel of revenge yet includes so much more. The usual predictablity of this genre was lost on Punke as he relives life in the early mountain west. The story is vivid and captivating; written in such a way that you feel personally involoved. Furhtermore, the ending will leave you pondering your own resolve...Truly a great read and a debut that suggests great things for Punke's future as a writer.

I didn't expect it at all. The number of times I had it all figured out, only to find out each time how wrong I was--that made it so much better. Now, of course, I'm already imagining book 3, and expecting something spectacular.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. sequel was worth the wait! By Palapala I am so glad David Frazier has given us a second book in hopefully a long series. The author who first introduced us to the main Arzat characters- Mot and Ara and their human friends - Alex and Tom, has now continued their story. They must survive in a new world while facing many challenges. There were intriguing characters introduced and a plot which made putting this book down impossible until I had read to the end. The last sentence of the book was the tease I was hoping for - get busy David on the 3rd book!

There were unexplained evolutionary behaviors that had they been addressed would have made a better book. It's still a interesting scenario traveling from millions of years back to thousands of years into the future. At least it should make any reader more aware of what could happen if a large asteroid hit Earth.
