First off, Ms. Woolf, a lot of the language was way too modern! Second, we hear too much of what a bad a.. place Deadwood is (the dots is so I don't use offensive language in my review), we got it after the first ten times. Thirdly, one minute you have the h talking big, bad, and tough to the H and the next acting like a wimp to her father, what? I understand the child inside still wanting the love or approval of a parent, but really, taking daily beatings and at the age the h is suppose to be? And where was all the big toughness then? Why would she put up with it? Oh, yes, for the claim, even though we heard how she stashed gold from her father daily. Still, not enough to leave? Are you crazy? I'm sorry but I couldn't swallow this claptrap! Going to try to get my money back!!!!!!

I like depth in the books I read and to feel like I'm there. I want to know what they see, smell, and feel. I never felt that. It had potential, but I was left wishing for more. I agree with the other person that said the ending was disappointing. The book is all about Jakes murder charges and Becky's abusive father, but it ends very quickly. A build up to......nothing. I really wanted to like it. It had good parts and I am interested to see if there will be more stories about the brothers. But like I said its not a favorite and I wouldn't pay more than a dollar or two for it. It does have two bedroom scenes. They are pretty explicit but are only a couple pages long. I had hoped for a little more build up to that as well, but it was pretty rushed into. They were married first but when he found out she didn't want sex, that was a perfect opportunity to seduce her. But she warmed up to it quickly after all. I guess in my opinion the author rushed the story and missed a lot of places that could have been interesting. Don't want give to bad of a review because it could just be my personal preferences that kept me from liking the book more.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Three stars. By Karen Talley This book should have been great. It had all the necessary 'ingredients.' Somehow it just fell flat. The character development was not good. I just never felt any connection with any of them. And, although the plot started out great, it went on a downhill slide. **** Spoiler alert**** It was just difficult for me to believe that a man who held his dying fiance in his arms after she had been brutally raped and shot could instantly be attracted to a dirty young woman dressed as a man. ( Just five months later.) So much so that he worked her claim and gave her the gold he found instead of helping his brothers on their own claim. And the oral sex was a real ick for me. Couldn't they have jumped in the creek first? BTW, back then, cathouse workers who supplied oral sex were actually looked down on by the other ladies of the evening so it is always a little bit of a shock to find characters 'indulging' in this way in a period novel. *****end spoilers**** I did a lot of skimming to finish the book only to find the ending to be a big jump into ....nothing. There was no real resolution to the origin of the story line. Everything was just solved. How? We aren't told. I hate that!Language and sex may be a problem for some readers..
