In any good story with a strong hero, the villain has to be good at being bad. What Rain has done is develop characters as the story unfolds (all flawed...you know...human), while at the same time demonstrating the intelligence of men who choose the wrong the path. What makes this book (and many of his other westerns) interesting is the planning and patience of both the hero and the villain. It's character, intelligence, and a bit of luck that ultimately determines how the story ends, not being the fastest gun and having a bunch of others helping you.My only criticism of Raine is that he often spins his yarns around some romantic interest and then leaves the reader hanging at the end. And after reading how a guy busts his ass for several chapters (hunting and being hunted), sometimes I'd like a paragraph or two about how the heroine and/or the other characters got along now that the bad guys are dead. So often Raine's novels end a page or less after the last villain is killed, as if the other characters don't have an end of story to be told. If he's lucky, the hero will get a kiss (often his first) from the heroine and that's it. The story doesn't have to end with a sappy ending, but it should end with a cleaner rap up in some of his novels. You get to know his characters quite well (one of the endearing qualities of his novels), and when the novel ends, you sometimes wanna ask yourself..."WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED...?" I should add in fairness that this criticism DOES NOT apply to Bucky O'Connor.

By Gene Tate This is the best of many wonderful stories written by Mr. Raine, the good guys get the bad guys, it has some wonderful humor in it also, Sheriff Bear Trap Val Collins and Ranger Bucky O'Connor make a durable duo, the old hard covers written in l907 and l910 have 4 illustrations that really add to the book, I recall reading this type of book about 50 years ago as a youngster.
