A bright young man with cerebral palsy has his destiny intertwined with Princess Diana’s.Visiting a school for disabled boys, the future Princess Diana singles out wheelchair-bound Alex to dance with—a five-minute encounter that colors the rest of his life, though quickly forgotten by her. Alex, a survivor of severe school bullying, thinks constantly of the tall girl with blue eyes—until one day he sees her on television, the new fiancée of Prince Charles. Alex’s story interweaves with Diana’s final day before her fatal accident in the late summer of 1997. In the unsatisfying company of her billionaire boyfriend she careens from one luxurious, alien Paris location to another, tormented by paparazzi. All day she tries to reach a friend in London, hoping to hear news that will bring a new direction to her life.“Dancing with Diana is a beautifully wrought story that takes us deep into two hard-to-imagine worlds. Alex, a bright young man with cerebral palsy, has his destiny intertwined, in double-helix fashion, with Princess Diana. The latter we meet in her last few hours, and Alex we accompany from childhood through manhood. His ungainly yet triumphant progress towards self-acceptance and independence has an extraordinary echo in Diana’s own brave, doomed search for an authentic life. This is a very fine book that side-steps clichés about celebrity to create a new awareness of Diana, and also gives us a startling sense of life lived strongly and meaningfully with cerebral palsy.” — Dan Yashinsky, author of Tales for An Unknown City and The Storyteller at Fault

Dancing with Diana is a surprising and satisfying book. At first I wasn’t sure how interested I would be to read about Princess Diana, and I read it based on recommendation - however Salas’ perspective on her is so sensitive, giving voice so beautifully to her emotional life and the conflicts in her inner dialogue, that I became quite engrossed in the small moment of her life that is her part of the story. Meanwhile, the main story for me was Alex’s. His evolution into manhood through the challenges and losses posed by his cerebral palsy is deftly juxtaposed with Diana’s inner dialogue to add tension and depth to both stories.Alex’s experiences reminded me at times of the book Stuck in Neutral, which I loved reading with students when I taught middle school – but this book is not as dark as Stuck in Neutral. Alex’s growing desire and ability to confront challenges head-on really carries the story and leads to a striking culmination. The book offers a deep reflection on the struggle for identity and voice, with each of its two protagonists shedding light on this topic from their own unique experiences. It is a book that is easy to relate to, and which offers an opening for the reader to more deeply understand themself through the characters.

My book club loved it By Sharon Prince The first time I read Dancing with Diana I was so taken with it that I recommended it to my book club. We met last week. The book inspired a lively discussion. All agreed it was well written, with moving characters and two compelling stories beautifully interwoven. Talking about the book led to discussion of bullying and all the forms it can take and the challenges in society for people with special needs and how that has changed and not changed in the last 40 years. We shared the little we knew about Princess Diana and how that compared with Salas’s well-crafted tale. My fellow book club members enjoyed the book as much as I did. This was a successful book club choice.I strongly recommend Dancing with Diana by Jo Salas

By Katherine Fiveash I particularly enjoyed the way this novel interfaced with my own memories and feelings about Diana. For some reason, Diana inspired many people, including me, to feel that they had "danced" with her. Alex's encounter with her, and the influence it had on his life, ring true. And Diana's persecution at the hands of the press after her ascent into the public sphere provides a parallel with the bullying experienced by Alex. The story is well-written and engaging, and I enjoyed it all.
