Uju Amanambu is very passionate and outspoken about the domestic and cultural issues plaguing her society. In A Broken Rose she explores the unpopular views and stigma associated with being different in a society rife with superstition, religion and overt ignorance; lending a voice to the 'branded'.
Uju is from Nnewi North, Anambra, Nigeria. By day, she manages projects and when evening calls, she relaxes with writing, Yoga or a book.

Though written for a global audience, the sense of an African-Nigerian-Ibo Identity resonantes throughout the book. While reading, i was able to make reference to the writer's rich nigerian cultural background in the eastern part of Nigeria. For me, that was key as it portrayed her ability to market her culture on the global scale.This is excellent. Interestingly the theme of identity echoes throughout the book. I found myself juggling my mind between the different intersting but yet similar characters, placing each person where he/she belonged, understanding how they co-existed and interacted. More interesting is the presentation of the story. It isn't the conventional A to Z kind of book, rather a z-b-r-a-b-z-r kind of sequence which kept me mentally alert as i was aware that something i had read earlier would be needed to understand a latter part of the book. It was an interesting kind of puzzle. For a writer do that with a piece of literature, it takes a great deal of artistic intelligence. While reading the book i was so engrossed that i began to personify the lead character and was occasionally brought back to reality. Another attention grabbing part of the book is Ijeoma's character, who in her confusion was able to give relevance and clarity to the other confused characters, which in itself is a paradox. It is a must read for everyone.

The writer's skillful attention to detail and art of knitting several stories together is a gift to behold. The book is a definite page-turner and at the end of the book, you like me, would definitely want to re-read the book in case any important details were left out on the first read.I wish the writer explored the love story between Rose and Richard but it is a clear indication that life in itself is not all a bed of roses (pun intended).This book is a must-read and definitely should be in the literature curriculum of most Nigerian schools as the writer's vast and eclectic knowledge of the Nigerian and specifically Igbo culture shone through in this book.A Broken Rose is a poignant reminder of how mental illness in this part of the world (Africa) is often treated as a taboo and serves as a reminder that with research and modern medicine great strides have been achieved.Fantastic job Uju.
