A description of the instrumentation - primarily, of course, the 40-inch refractor - and the edifice is first undertaken and then a discussion of the work done, with asides as to unfulfilled projects. The style is that of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before Hemingway shortened the narrative and we all became impatient and, as such, a pleasure to read. It is interesting that more than half of the work then done with the Great Refractor was measurement of double stars - I understand that the Lick 36-inch is used, primarily or exclusively, for this use today. An acknowledgement is made that the skies of California would be preferable, for more sustained cloudlessness (today we would say southern Arizona, no doubt). The author points out that the 24-inch reflector (optics by Ritchey, mounting by the Yerkes machine shop), used photographically, was superior to the 40-inch refractor in its light grasp. It is also interesting to see the names on the staff - familiar amateurs-become-professionals are there, professors in "Practical Astronomy." The Triangulum "Nebula," M33, is presented in a photo, the caption stating that its distance would be no doubt greater than the individual stars in the remaining field (M33 is not a cloud of dust and gas in the Milky Way [a nebula], but a galaxy more than 2 million light years away - the field stars are thousands of light years distant from Earth and all in the Milky Way - this would be known within thirty years of the publication of this booklet, after the work of Slipher at Lowell Observatory was done and utilized by Hubble. The Orion Nebula, M42, is described in another photo as containing the mysterious element, "nebulum." One wonders which of our own truths will elicit a smile in a hundred years! So all in all, a glimpse into a not too distant and in some ways, a better age.
