The male and female protagonists of the previous novel, Will Sturman and Valerie Martell, come up against *another* oversized, carnivorous cephalopod eating a bunch of people (this time around the Bahamas). I liked this book less than the first one, simply because it felt, to me, like just a retread. Though Val and Will's shaky relationship (and the way their problems get resolved) wasn't poorly done, the structure of the novel as a whole felt too derivative. Many-tentacled monster gobbles up some unfortunate mooks in the beginning, protagonist finds out and prepares to investigate for herself, monster eats more people, then the good guys band together and kill it in its 'lair.'Now, there are a few semi-interesting subplots involving the history of the Bahamian natives and US Navy hydrophones, but nothing particularly relevant to the monster itself or the conclusion of the book (there was also a brief bit with a 'wise old woman' type stock character which I found kind of dumb). Lockwood also gives a plausible scientific explanation for the size and aggressiveness of the beastie in "From Beneath" as well, but I didn't find myself as impressed with that the second time around. I can't give this a negative review since it still had me turning the pages, wanting to see what happened, but it's just not good enough for me to give a glowing review either.

What Lurks Beneath is in the same vein, with reality-based icky bug. With that surprise out of the way, I was able to look at the story with more open eyes and found it much more enjoyable. In this case, I took it more as an adventure-thriller and less as a horror (icky bug) novel. That being said, nature run amok is still a great premise for good icky bug.The story flowed very well, the writing almost top-notch. Solid third-person made everything fast-paced and I didn't have to pause with any annoying head-hopping, though there might have been a bit here and there. As for grammar, the only quirks that caught me were the liberal use of some passive "began to's" and "started to's." Outside of that, the writing gets top marks.I liked all the characters and the plot moved along with only one loose end and unresolved issue that I wish the author had fixed better (there might have been more for other readers). However, because of the high body count, that wasn't possible. In the end, I still closed the book with a smile on my face. I'm looking forward to the next one, though I don't know what kind of monster he can dredge out of reality from sea creatures this time around. We'll see. Highly recommended.

By NewAvidReader After reading "Below", I was excited to read "What Lurks Beneath", and I was not disappointed! The continuation of the original characters (at least the ones that were left) was really good, and Ryan's attention to detail, and the depth of his research into these things is amazing. I find myself wanting to know more about the local legends and characteristics of the things he writes about. I could hardly put this book down - and so many parts, including the ending - INTENSE. My favorite kind of book. Ryan - nicely done - thanks! Can't wait for the next one! I'm a fan!
