Set in the sparse frontier settlements of northeastern Brazil, Backlands tells the true story of a group of nomadic outlaws who reigned over the area from about 1922 until 1938. Taking from the rich and feared by the poor, they were led by the famously charismatic bandit Lampiao. A one-eyed goat rancher who first set out to avenge his father's murder in a lawless land, Lampiao proved to be too good a leader, fighter, and strategist to ever return home again. By 1925 he commanded the biggest gang of outlaws in Brazil. Known to this day as a "prince," Lampiao had everything: brains, money, power, charisma, and luck. Everything but love, until he met Maria Bonita. "You teach me to make lace, and I'll teach you to make love"-this was the song the bandits marched to, and it was Maria Bonita who made it come true. She was stuck in a loveless marriage when she met Lampiao, but she rode off with him, becoming "Queen of the Bandits." Together the couple-still celebrated folk heroes-would become the country's most wanted figures, protecting their extraordinary freedom through cunning.

Shorr has brought the peoples' legend of Maria Bonita, Lampiao, and their band of outlaws to vivid life with clarity and depth, giving voice to a time and place that calls to be heard. A wild ride from start to finish, this gripping tale of passion and courage lingers and haunts, long after it's final round of gunfire.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is laconic, poetic. Sentences become kaons, paeans become haikus. By Perkins Frances This book is masterful, full of restraint and written with an elegance and warmth that is characteristic of Ms. Shorr's work. Shorr is a sensitive and intuitive writer who gets to the very crux of the matter and makes us feel why and how this story, these characters, matter. She gives a glimpse into the hearts and lives of the complex protagonists living in a complex place full of stark contrasts, and the decisions they make about how to live their lives are philosophical, even existential. The story unfolds in an extremely courageous way--I was riveted by the story from start to finish, and yet Shorr does not let the plot do the heavy-lifting, even though it would be easy to let the simple facts of the tale carry the narrative along. Instead, Shorr weaves a complex picture of the region, the circumstances of the characters's lives, and the motivations for why they chose a nihilistic path, which ironically was also the path of love, generosity, fun and to feeling truly alive. The language is stark and crisp, perfectly suited to the region Shorr is describing, and her profound connection to this virtually unknown part of the world is mirrored in the way the story is told: there is a circuitry--temporal sequences are manipulated at will, the way Faulkner or Joyce uses time--that conveys the impression of being given a privileged glimpse into a larger continuum. The book is laconic, poetic. Sentences become kaons, paeans become haikus.
