Evangeline Morrissey remembers the last time she saw her husband: it was during their honeymoon, right before he stole her elderly aunt's earrings and abandoned her. Now, five years later, the enigmatic man who’d broken her heart and destroyed her trust is back. But she’s not the same naive young woman who fell for him so easily.

Marrying Evangeline and letting her think he was nothing but a common thief had been James Bishop’s plan all along. As an assassin for the Committee, a covert agency dedicated to stamping out international crime, he had no business even thinking about marriage. But it was the only way to protect Evangeline after she’d unwittingly wandered into his operation against a group of human traffickers, placing herself in grave danger. And now that James’s vigilant watch over Evangeline’s life has revealed to his enemies that she’s his one true weakness, he must set out to have, to hold, and—above all—to protect his bride.

Review

“Devotees of Stuart’s blazing-hot Ice series will rejoice at her return to the dark, deadly intrigue of the Committee in this new series set in the same world, but first-time readers will have no trouble getting swept up in this fast-paced, no-holds-barred tale. The action is gripping and the plot complex and engaging, with two strong, fierce protagonists whose battles of wills are as compelling as their high-stakes adventure. Though not a sweeping romance, Stuart weaves a story of sudden passion and growing desire into this suspenseful and surprisingly humorous plot.” —RT Book Reviews, 4 1/2 Stars

Good Spin Off From Stuart's Ice Series By Sheila M "His mouth was made for sin, his lean body had a whipcord, tensile strength, and Evangeline was in love."THE STORY: Five years ago, Evangeline Morrisey, an American academic, met a man in Italy who seduced her into tossing away her conservative thoughts and fall quickly into a love affair and a quickie marriage. Just as quickly, however, Evangeline awakes to find out that she married a thief who stole from and abandoned her. What Evangeline didn't know was that the man she married, James Bishop, is an operative for the Committee. The Committee is a covert, multinational organization centered in London and dedicated to eliminating terrorism and organized crime. James married Evangeline to protect her when she unknowingly stumbled into an operation. Now, James has to return to Evangeline in order to protect her from those who want to use her against him.OPINION: This is a book filled with pain and grief and betrayal. Evangeline loved James five years ago and his betrayal almost destroyed her. When the two reunite, Evangeline has intense anger against James to work through. I really enjoyed her character. Evangeline makes numerous mistakes from the moment she meets James and this book is filled with her accepting and dealing with those mistakes. It is also about forgiveness because she been severely hurt by James. The transition of Evangeline from a sweet young woman to a guarded, sarcastic, strong woman is sad, but also empowering.James is an enigma. He is not as dark as some of the heroes in the Ice series -- although he is a jerk at times as might be expected of a Stuart hero. His determination to protect Evangeline at all costs is his redeeming quality. His determination not to love her and his inability to stop himself demonstrates that Evangeline is his weakness and also makes him a stronger man.As could be expected, CONSUMED BY FIRE is filled with action, suspense and deception. The story is a tight thriller that keeps twisting and turning until the final page. There is a good balance between the romance and the suspense story. Stuart's books trend toward darker, angst-filled romances where the hero and heroine balance between love and hate. This book is somewhat different in that James from the beginning of their reconnection is already softer toward Evangeline than most of Stuart's hero. He hasn't been able to forget her and thus while the question remains whether the two can have a happy ever after, there is no doubt that he cannot hurt her. In a role reversal, it is Evangeline who has become darker and is the one in control of their relationship.Having the Committee open operations in the United States has many possibilities and this book introduces a possible future hero. I look forward to the next book in the series.WORTH MENTIONING: I absolutely adored the Ice series to which this book is loosely connected. This book is not as good as the best books in that series, but I am happy that Stuart is continuing her stories about the Committee.FINAL DECISION: While not as incredible as the original books in the Ice series, CONSUMED BY FIRE is a good entry in the romantic suspense category. Fans of Stuart's angst filled stories with alpha anti-heroes will be pleased.CONNECTED BOOKS: CONSUMED BY FIRE is the first book in the Fire series. The Fire series is loosely connected to the Ice series. While CONSUMED BY FIRE mentions some of the characters from the Ice series, it is not necessary to have read any of the Ice books.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.NOTE: I received an ARC of the book from Netgalley in order to provide an honest review of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Especially since it sounded like it was going to be a good book. -- Instead it took a lot of pushing on to actually finish reading it.The male lead in Consumed By Fire was not a character I fell in love with. & I never understood why the heroine fell in love with him either. I like a good tough, alpha-like guy in books just like the next person. Only this character was mean & I never once glimpsed qualities in his personality that made me love him too. --- Bishop treated her like crap throughout the entire book, refused to explain why he was doing the things he was doing, and purposely tried to make her afraid of him at every turn. (His justification was that it was the only way to keep her safe.) --- Only it made him a pretty unlikable guy in the process. The other thing that got me about this book was the sex. Not the sex in general, but the circumstances surrounding them when they wanted to have sex. -- In one instance she had just watched him kill a man... (which made her throw up -- it was that difficult to witness.) & then about an hour or so later all she could think about was how turned on she was & how much she wanted him. -- I don't know about anyone else, but if I had just been attacked & then watched someone kill a man right in front of me.... the very last thing on my mind would be sex.Honestly, I think if Bishop had just a little bit of a softer edge to him at times I would have enjoyed this book more. That and maybe if the sex didn't occur during off-putting moments. This is the first book I've read by this author & going by it alone I probably wouldn't read another one of her books. -- However, I won't allow one book to make that decision. I may try her work again in the future. -- If the things I mentioned above aren't a deal breaker for you, then you may very well enjoy this book.

Fantastic Dark Romantic Suspense By Lorna As far as I am concerned, when it comes to dark romantic suspense, the author to read is Anne Stuart, and she has all the awards to prove it after a very long writing career. If this book is any indication, she is nowhere near done writing top notch romantic suspense. This is the first book in this series, but it also is a spin off of her extremely popular and exciting Ice Series. I received a copy of this book from the publisher by way of Net Galley in exchange for a fair and honest review.Evangeline Morrissey is an American academic on sabbatical in Italy. She manages to stumble into a murder scene in a church, but has no idea anyone has died. The murderers are still there, and when she goes to leave, one of them, a very handsome and charming man, offers her a ride back to her hotel. Against her better judgement she accepts, and little does she know the odyssey her life will be from then on. All James Bishop is supposed to do is find out what she saw, and take care of the problem. Somehow he can’t bring himself to kill her.The characters were pretty much the total opposites of each other. While Evangeline’s life has been full of education, and teaching college, his life is full of evil, and death-caused by himself. The reader finds out that he works for The Committee, a group that fights for good, against terrorism in all it’s forms, including human trafficking. Evangeline, of course doesn’t know this, so spends a good bit of the book upset. What follows is a romance, one with some very dark moments, some heartbreak, lots of scorching hot sex scenes, plenty of suspense, and yes, even death. The sexual scenes aren’t made up of gratuitous sex, or filler, each scene definitely just adds more layers to the story. It was refreshing that Evangeline isn’t gorgeous, she’s fairly attractive, but not what most romances feature. And James is the ultimate alpha male, one that has no intentions of involving a woman in his lifestyle. You know what they say about the best laid plans..I found the premise to be fairly plausible, the pace fast-especially in the last part of the book, ended up loving the characters, enjoyed seeing James actually fall in love, and the suspense just elevated the story up another level.I loved this book, and would recommend it to adult romance/suspense readers.(PureTextuality.com)
