Desperate to get some sleep, a young mother named May takes her son to the doctor. The pediatrician is sympathetic and gives her a prescription for a new drug to help with Martin's colic. From the first dose of the drug Loctonan, life for Martin, May, and her mother Abigail begins a sharp spiral downward. The life of mother, grandmother, and everyone who becomes engaged with this case are changed in far-reaching ways; and at the center of it all is a boy named Martin, unaware of how he affects those around him. The physicians and lawyers become involved, and May and Abigail become adrift in a sea of language new to them as well and dollar figures they never dreamed about. Andrew Kirkpatrick, the attorney on this case, has never handled a case of this type and must learn quickly that he must at least pretend to know what he is doing or the attorneys of a very large corporation will eat him alive, and no justice for Martin will be gained. The medical and legal world is unfamiliar to most of us, and this trip is one we hope never to travel, but along the way, we learn much of people and their motivations.

Author Teri Flicker chose a very apt title in Everybody Loses By Amy E L Weik This book illustrates how many people can contribute to a tragedy, each in their own way. Through acts of laziness, pettiness, prejudice, and self interest large and small, many people contribute to 3 month old Martin overdosing on a prescribed medication resulting in a possibly permanent comatose state. In such cases there is no single smoking gun, no one person to blame, and this book explores that idea. Author Teri Flicker chose a very apt title in Everybody Loses, when tragedy strikes there are no real winners. However at the core of this book is a strong sense of right and wrong, integrity and personal responsibility, and the importance of standing up and advocating for those who are unable to do so.For me the most powerful parts of this book were the personal stories of the people fighting for Martin: his mother May, who was young and duped into falling in love with the wrong man, her mother Abigail, who became homeless rather than abort her baby at 16, and their lawyer and his mentor who had deeply personal reasons for wanting to see justice done for Martin. Teri Flicker shines a light on the relationships that these characters have, I could really feel the truth and purpose that she wrote into the story.
