It’s said that God is infinite, and everywhere. But what if He isn’t? What if it were possible to fly so far out into space that you arrive at a place where God does not exist? How would you know it? What would happen? These questions arise when nearly three dozen astronauts and observers embark on the most daring voyage of exploration in all of human history, a space flight designed to probe the very limits of our universe. Among those on board is a scientist who also wears a priest’s collar—Father Cameron Teal, director of the Vatican Observatory, recruited for the mission by an iconic industrialist who secretly hopes to find God. After the N.A.U.S. Santa Maria crosses an unimaginable distance, bizarre, unexplainable, and profoundly frightening events start to unfold. As the chaos increases and terror grips the crew, Father Teal begins to wonder whether, in the quest to find God, he’s actually lost Him. “This novel delivers. Carr’s writing pulls the reader into the story, willingly or not. The images form as the suspense builds. Be careful of the dark.” —Dr. Steve B. Howell Project Scientist, NASA's Kepler mission and author of A Kepler's Dozen

The Dark, by Forrest Carr

Review Kirkus Reviews:  -- "Carr (a 2015 Kirkus Reviews 'Author to Watch') has a real talent for constructing living, breathing characters.  After a tantalizing, action-filled prologue, Carr takes time to establish these volatile characters... Once the ship leaves the universe for a perfect vacuum... all hell breaks loose. In a quantum nothingness where anything can happen, everything does.  Part sci-fi, part psychological drama, part zombie apocalypse, the thrillfest starts early and continues till the end.  This is a rollicking adventure with religious, philosophical, and technological overtones!"

From the Inside Flap "This novel delivers.  Carr's writing pulls the reader into the story, willingly or not. The images form as the suspense builds. Be careful of the dark." --Dr. Steve B. Howell   Project Scientist, NASA's Kepler mission and author of A Kepler's Dozen Critics praise Forrest Carr's previous science fiction novel, A Journal of the Crazy Year:   "Fresh thinking and feeling... stuffed with untrimmable, character-driven, cogent dialogue.... A fascinating read all the way to its chilly, barely hopeful conclusion." --Publishers Weekly   "Carr employs jet-black humor reminiscent of Vonnegut.... A truly unconventional ending makes for a worthy trip.  A great case made for the idea that the end isn't nigh--it's already here." --Kirkus Reviews "Impressive."  A "thrilling narrative." --Fantascize.com   Readers praise A Journal of the Crazy Year:   "This book caught me right from the beginning and I couldn't put it down.  Highly recommend it and have done so to many of my friends who loved it as well." --Amazon.com 5-star reviewer   "Thanks for no sleep that night when I found myself finishing it up at 4 am on a work night! And the ending was just so unexpectedly PERFECT." --Amazon.com 5-star reviewer   "This was magnificent.  I know this will stay with me for a while.  It was certainly a page turner, so hard to put down." --Amazon.com 5-star reviewer "My family almost didn't have mashed potatoes or cranberries on Thanksgiving, and it's thanks to this book!  Could NOT put it down.  Absolutely loved it." --Amazon.com 5-star reviewer   Critics praise Forrest Carr's first novel, Messages:   "An accomplished debut novel" rendered with "smooth skill." --Kirkus Reviews   "Masterful...."  "Carr's novel is engrossing, fun to read and a joy to see play out to its inevitable, tragic, hilarious and scandalous conclusion." --MocoVox.com

Kampa I wish I were as creative and entertaining in my writing as the author is in his, The Dark is a compelling science fiction thriller.Likes: The exploration of theological questions about God’s existence; humorous dialogues; bringing the effects of 21st century issues of sexual identity into 22nd century settings; tasteful treatment of sexual encounters with no graphic descriptions and minimal profanity; character development; exploration of evil and sin in human character: teleology and a look at what might lie beyond the universe; excitement and can’t-put-it-down plot development.Challenges: a lot of descriptions and references throughout the book to the technology and theoretical physics that enable the star ship to complete its mission. I had difficulty trying to understand it, but hard core sci-fi fans will love this. Nor could I understand the source and cause of weird, poltergeist-like, demonic apparitions who play a major part in the story but they are a useful device for creating terror and suspense in this writing genre. The Dark is worth your time for the look into the future it offers and for the shear fun of trying to figure out how our heroes escape evil forces to return to our galaxy and earth and home.

Many times I found myself pausing and looking up from the book just to catch my breath. Part old-fashioned space exploration sci fi, part haunted spaceship, part zombie nightmare, part gothic romance with lovers, storms and lightning — "The Dark" has it all and it somehow works. Among the highlights — the large cast of interesting characters. Each is unique. Just when you think the author may have fallen into a cliche — he reveals something about each character that makes you think, "Hmm, that's a twist." Your heroes are deeply flawed. Your villains have sympathetic sides. It makes the adventure and horror to come all the more real because you feel something — admiration, sadness, fear, pity — for each character. The science and technology is realistic and deep, but written so even a non-techie can follow along. And did I mention the spiders? I don't think it's a spoiler because they are featured on the cover, but let's just say these creepy crawlies have been in my dreams (nightmares?) several times while reading this book. Now that I think about it, "The Dark" may be a book best read in the bright light of day.

By WriterBryan Forest Carr was able to educate the reader about the technology reliant on understanding the rest of the plot in a way that took you along and indoctrinated you as part of the crew. When reading this novel, you aren't an "outsider looking in" on the story. You're along for the ride, and you might not like where it takes you; into the dark.I cared about these characters and I understood the ship, the space they were in, and even learned a few things about what it might be like to travel space because the characters were able to teach me rather than the usual "info-dump" that most science fiction authors would have to apply in order for me to understand what was going on. Carr was capable of conveying the mechanics of their situation to me through the characters he created, and in doing so, brought these characters to life (even if some only lived for a short while).Be prepared to be taken to a place you were never supposed to go when reading this book. It's a journey that rivals that of "Event Horizon" while carrying some of that same DNA. This is the best Science Fiction Horror novel I have read in over a decade.
