I have previously been to Thailand, the Land of Smiles (LOS) and, in particular, Pattaya, so I readily agreed, wondering how closely the book might match my own experiences. I was not disappointed. The book is a fictionalized account (well….) of one man’s first visit to Pattaya. This man, Lou Pendleton, is a very likable 40 year old bachelor who hasn’t dated since his last girlfriend left him ten years previously. He is down on his luck and primed for a midlife crisis, being stuck in a job he hates, working along with younger kids who consider him a dinosaur. After they gang up on him and file a false sexual harassment complaint in the hope of getting him fired, he gets talked into taking a last minute, 2-week vacation to Pattaya, Thailand while his employment fate is determined. About all he knows about Thailand is that he likes Thai food. A friend sets him up with a hotel near Pattaya Beach, and the very next day he is on his way. Lou is only expecting a calm, boring trip where he will relax on a beautiful beach while his future life is being determined back home.It is not until after he arrives at his hotel and has a chance encounter with Bob, a mysterious man who is wise to the ways of Pattaya, that he learns that Pattaya is basically heaven on earth for single guys. Bob gives him important advice about Pattaya, such as to not fall in love with bar girls, avoid lady boys, trust no one, etc. Very sound and practical advice but, as Lou discovers, not always easy to follow. It is when Lou goes out to explore the city and encounter the people and experiences of Pattaya that the story starts to get interesting. Our calm, quiet and celibate Lou quickly succumbs to the pleasures of Pattaya, and this is when most readers of this book will start to glean helpful advice. As with any newbie visiting Pattaya for the first time, Lou found himself a bit overwhelmed. It is fun to follow him on his first day as he visits several massage parlors and tries to figure the pay-for-play system out, followed by his first trip to Walking Street, arguably the world’s largest Red Light district.I do not want to give much of the story away, but the description of Walking Street is spot on. Lou sees throngs of Chinese visitors clogging up the place, and marvels at the number of couples who brought young children. He, like most others who visit, wonders what the heck they are thinking! Lou also sees a young girl, dressed in tights, doing amazing acrobatics for street tips. He also sees a man watching over her and wonders about the situation that causes an innocent young girl to work amongst lady boys and sex tourists. And speaking of lady boys, Lou is grabbed by one who is quite insistent about being taken to his hotel. All of these are real, and I encountered them all on my own trip. I can attest that those LBs can put on a painful vice-grip clamp that can be a little scary. (Just remain polite and say you prefer actual girls and they will eventually let you go. Never give them an excuse to get angry at you. LBs stick together and being men, they are strong!)Also on Walking Street, Lou walks by the Thai Boxing ring and meets some people while he watches the fighting. It is true there are plenty of people there who you can have a nice conversation with. He then learns a lesson about trusting people when he asks to take a picture of one of the fighters. He clicks away, encourage by the fighter, then when some other boxers come over for some pictures, his waiter offers to take his picture with a fighter. Of course, each person then demands a hefty fee for each picture that was taken! Lou is actually more upset with himself for being duped, than upset at them for taking advantage of him. This stuff happens, and Lou is smart by not arguing and simply knocking himself for being taken.Lou also ventures into the go go bars, but I save that for the reader. I have no reason to believe that what he describes is not true. While the number one advice for the guys who go to Pattaya is to not fall in love with the bar girls, many men do indeed fall for one. Lou witnesses an encounter where a man has nearly bankrupted himself and, with no more money, his Thai lover dumps him. But it is important to realize that only a tiny fraction of Thai girls are involved in the sex business. They may not even regard themselves as sex workers as they only do it for a short period of time in order to fulfil some immediate short-term goal. Thus, Lou meets a beautiful girl named Bow. She is new to the business and her goal is to raise enough money to become a legitimate hair dresser and to eventually own her own hair salon. It is difficult for a lonely man to not immediately fall in love with a young, beautiful girl who shows vulnerability, but Lou meets Bow in a club and immediately feels an attraction. It does not take long for young Bow (not yet jaded by the business of sex) to also develop an attraction for Lou as well, but are her feelings for him real? They start hanging out as their affections seem to deepen. I will say little more about them so as to avoid ruining the story, but this developing romance (real or faked) causes a transformation in Lou’s existence that leads the way for him to snap out of his unhappy life and regain control.I do have a few complaints about the story. I feel the author overstates the beauty of the women who are available. Walk down the real Soi 6 and most of the girls calling “Welcome, welcome” are, well, not very good looking. A very few are gorgeous, but the most are doomed to work in the massage parlors. In the Walking Street clubs things are better, possibly because the girls are dancing all day and thus have the tight and toned spinner bodies we associate with Asian girls. As western style fast food has entered Thai life, waist sizes has been going up. Also, I found that Lou, who started off as this shy, downcast man, seemed to learn the ropes of Pattaya a little too quickly. He remains thoughtful and always is a nice guy, but within hours of arriving in Pattaya and with no preparation, he was out visiting massage parlors and go go clubs. And, too, the subplot was a bit farfetched, but still entertaining. And I really don’t care if there are few weak areas, as the main reason a person would want to read this book is for the information about Pattaya. And I think the book does a good job of doing that. As a former visitor to Pattaya, I found myself laughing at parts of the book and saying to myself, “Yes, this happened to me!”. If you are a newbie who reads this book, I think you will also laugh when you visit Pattaya and see something that will remind you of what you read and you will think, “Yes, I remember Lou had this happen!”So who should be buying this book? I think those single men making a first trip to Pattaya would find the book a fun way to learn about the city and how things work. It gives real-life examples of what can happen simply walking down a side street. Not sure what might happen in a regular 2nd Road massage place? Read the book. If a young-looking girl comes up you begging you to take her back to your hotel and she says she is 18 and upon checking her ID it shows she was born in 2543, is it safe or is she jail bait? You take back a girl and she asks if you will take care of her, is she expecting a good tip or is she expecting a trip to back to your country with you, her new husband? What does it mean when you ask how much and she says “Up to you”? So while you can glean much of the do’s and don’ts from other sources, this book presents these in a generally warm or humorous way to teach you lessons that you will remember. It is one thing to be told lady boy’s may accost you. It is different to read the thoughts and feelings of one who is in the process of being accosted, and to see how they handled it and to how it might have been handled better. To conclude, I think most guys planning a trip to Pattaya will enjoy the book. It won’t win any literary awards, but it is entertaining. Most men are at least a little bit like Lou, in that we do have some measure of care and empathy for the ladies, and can relate to his experiences as he pits morality against primal urges. The book can be read in a couple of settings, and might even be good to read on the interconnecting flight in to BKK.

I thought it was one man's newbie story about his first trip to Thailand. My mistake. Anyway, it was a really fun read for the first two thirds of the book. I thought this guy was making every newbie mistake ever. With each passing newbie mistake, I thought, "oh no, he's really going to do that". It was exciting and fast paced; and very well written. As a frequent traveler to Thailand, I found the characters amusing and interesting. His chance meeting in the beginning with Bob over breakfast was convienient, but I have been seated with others at a table when the cafe was busy; and it was always a good experience. By the time it got to the "abduction", I knew it was fiction. Over all, I'm happy with the book and it was really a fun read. I'd be happy to buy another book by this author, or even meet up with him for lunch sometime. Maybe at 'Kiss Food".

Poor Lou the loser has everything going wrong for him--he's a nice, boring guy and everyone is out to screw him over. An unplanned and unexpected trip to exotic Thailand is really his awakening--as a man, and as a human. A very enjoyable read, poignant, sexy, and both dark and light at the same time. Well written and gripping--I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. It's a page turner. I'd love to meet the Lou that exists at the end of the book. No more Mister Boring.
