By Raemur2000 I was looking for a book that would hold my interest and was not familiar with Julie Frayn's writings when I clicked on the "look inside" feature for this book. I began reading the first chapter and when the preview was over, I couldn't click fast enough to purchase this book. It has been some time since a book took hold of me and wouldn't let me go until I finished it, but "Mazie Baby" did just that. The characters were easy to visualize in my mind right from the beginning due to the writer's ability to describe them well enough that you "know" them, without boring you with unnecessary details. Sadly, the subject matter was something I knew about from first hand experience, and the story was written in a way that even if you had never been in the same situation as Mazie, you felt you knew what it was like.It is difficult to review this book without giving a spoiler, but I will say that this book should be read by every woman and teen girl. It will give you an insight into a domestic violence victim's life that may help you with the age old question of "Why didn't she just leave him"? When reading this, you will get inside the head of the victim, you will feel emotions you may not want to feel, you will get visual images inside your head you may not want to see, and you will understand that in spite of the smugness of the one perpetrating the violence that it is between him and her and no one will know, there are many victims, and others do know.I can't remember the last time I began to read a book and could not put it down until I finished it, that is how gripping and powerful I found this book.

By Rabid Readers Reviews Sometimes the things from which we'd like not to see are the first things we should notice. The author, Julie Frayn, gave me a copy of this novel as an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for my review. Content may have changed between the copy I received and the version published.“Mazie Baby” was an incredibly hard book to read but upon closing the cover you know you’ve read brilliance on paper. Frayn has a gift of words and the ability to write incredibly vivid prose. While usually able to separate myself in a work from the violence and abuse, I spent most of “Maize Baby” shaking and crying. Frayn’s starts the novel with the smug neighbor speaking with Maize at her mailbox noting that she is covered head to toe. There’s a moment when the police are an option. Mazie knows the anger she’ll face but knows the police can’t protect them so declines charges. The idea that this abused woman is incredibly alone resonates with the reader and when the abuser grabs their daughter and basically declares her old enough to abuse, the sense of urgency is complete. This is a woman who realizes that this is no way to live and knows there’s a better way out than death if only she can find an escape. When they make their escape, the get away feels less like vengeance and more as a new bruise on Maize’s soul. She knows that she has to do what she must to escape and keep her daughter, Ariel, safe. Ariel has a bit of a soliloquy at the end of the novel speaking to the plight of victims of abuse who do what they must and become victims of the system. Mazie and Ariel do try to move on but the message is clear, they never will. The authentic feeling of “Mazie Baby” cannot be faulted. Readers closing the novel will have the sense of having read something truly real and important for those of us lucky enough to have not been in this situation to hear."Maize Baby" is an important and brave story and Julie Frayn is an exceptionally talented writer.

By D and S This is the story of Mazie Reynolds, recipient of her husband's beatings, chokings, and all-around general physical and emotional abuse. This book was hard to read at times. The graphic descriptions of abuse, of the husband Cullen's constant anger and belittling of Mazie, and his blatant disregard and disrespect for his family left me reeling with contempt for him.Fortunately, I've never experienced physical or emotional abuse. But this story gave me a vivid idea of what it would be like. And my heart hurts for the Mazies out there. Her character was so well-developed, I found myself wanting to hug her, have coffee with her, and lend shoulder. But Cullen's character was also well-developed, so if by some way I could have become Mazie's friend, I knew Cullen would have severely punished her for it. And I wouldn't have wanted to be the cause of that. This is a book I will read again. Not just because of its excellent writing and strong plot, but to help remind me that the Mazie's in this world need more attention, greater representation within the judicial system and protection from the Cullens in this world.
