By Natalie Mootz I'm a beginning banjo player (only been playing about a year) and this is not only the best Dummies banjo book, it's also the best beginner banjo book I own. I started with the original Banjo for Dummies book. It was okay. So I figured this book would just be the bluegrass parts taken out and pasted into another book. Not true. In fact, other than tuning your instrument and some basic rolls, everything about this book is different -- and better. If you want to play old-timey music (it's called clawhammer or frailing and it sounds like the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack), then you'll fare better with the original Banjo for Dummies book or one of Wayne Erbsen's books. But if you like Mumford & Sons, Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, or playing melodic or bluegrass songs, you should get this book instead. It's much more detailed on Scruggs style as well as the modern way banjo is being used in pop songs. After the original Dummies book I eventually read some other books and then started taking online lessons. Although I love my teacher, this book offers far more guidance than even he does, especially on things like how to play backup, how to vamp, how to play with others, where to find people to play with.Someone complained that the book won't lie flat. That's true of any paperback and no reason to knock off a star. The only banjo books I have that lay flat are the spiral bound type and they are MUCH thinner with fewer pages. I just use colored page flags to mark my place since I should be listening to what I'm playing and I shouldn't be dependent on the song notation anyway.

I look for books that will assist in my development. This book will probably take me a year to fully digest. It is packed with useful information and tells you not only what to do but the why behind it. I bought this book two weeks ago and it is in the top three books I have that are "keepers". Not only do you get the book but you get access to videos and audios online that shows everything that is being taught in the book. If you are a junior player, this is a must have learning book. This book also has plenty of material for the intermediate and advanced player. I would highly recommend this book.I see where one person marked down the quality of the book because the book wouldn't stay open. A 300 page paperback won't stay open on it's own. After having this book for two days, I took it to FedEx Kinkos and had them cut the binding off and replace it with a spiral. Problem solved. If you want to learn or improve your banjo playing, I promise you this book will help you on your path.
4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. modern players like Bela Fleck and Noam Pikelny are profiled and modern ... By Walter B. This book is a goldmine! it collects all the important bluegrass banjo topics in one place and will work for players at any level - beginning to advanced. Starts with how to choose and tune a banjo, and proceeds by stages to the most current topics (ex: melodic and single string playing). Has both audio and video online demonstrations, many at a slowed speed for easier following. The book takes an up-to-date viewpoint, not just rehashing ideas from the early days of 40's and 50's bluegrass. For example, modern players like Bela Fleck and Noam Pikelny are profiled and modern progressive styles of playing are covered. Don't be fooled by the "Dummies" label, this is a great resource.
