Five novellas telling the stories of how average people cope when thrust into extraordinary circumstances. From the young boy trying to understand why all the adults in town are so worried about the rumble that suddenly began one morning, to the retiree trying to relive his glory days while preparing for the possibility of meeting aliens. After waking up in a coffin, an average working man possesses incredible mental powers, while a boy who has always been told he is his planet’s saviour tries to have a normal life while being constantly hunted by the enemy. The chance encounter with a passing alien ship transforms one woman’s life, and one man tries to keep the remains of the world together through the magic of radio. Explore the possibilities of what it is to be human. Chosen When a mysterious ship appears in the skies over Earth, the world holds its breath and waits. Only Greer knows where it eventually landed: her front yard. The least likely candidate for first contact with aliens, she soon learns that it wasn’t pure chance: she was chosen. When mysterious creatures start appearing from nowhere and terrorizing her son, she begins to suspect he may be the key to something more disturbing, for the entire planet. Rumble The world awakes one morning to a massive subterranean rumble: the sound of normally lethargic tectonic plates shifting violently. The resulting havoc and destruction are felt around the globe as mountains grow to staggering heights, entire continents drift across the oceans and violent storms pummel the planet. Six individuals, spread across the globe, try to make sense of the dramatically changing world that suddenly surrounds them, where the only constant is the rumble under their feet. Voltage Electricity has become the differentiator between the elite and the impoverished masses in a future dystopia. After a bewildering accident, a man without a name wakes up to a world he no longer recognizes, with powers he can’t understand. Becoming involved with rebels, he teaches them his secrets and helps them try to overthrow the government… until he is caught, and the entire resistance is threatened. Prime Toch and Luqas live in a world dominated by the Spidon, a cruel race who have enslaved their once-great planet for generations. Hidden deep with Toch’s genes, there lies the key to their salvation. But until he is ready, he needs protection from being hunted and destroyed. When they are captured on the cusp of Toch’s powers maturing, their time unexpectedly runs out. Moon Carter is called out of a peaceful retirement for one final mission: the first manned expedition to the moon in thirty years. Odd structures have appeared on the surface of the moon, and after so many catastrophes, Carter is the last man qualified to investigate. The solitude of space travel provides ample opportunity for him to reflect on what awaits him at his destination. But he couldn’t have imagined what actually waited for him on the far side of the moon, hidden from the telescopes of Earth. ---------------------------- Praise for Prime (Four-star reviewed on Amazon) “…[W]ith a fast-paced and an original storyline, Prime is a solid debut… a writing style that falls on the classic literary side, offering beautifully detailed imagery… without being overly flowery or detracting from the story... an exciting and entrancing read.” - Underground Book Reviews

Strong and engaging stories By ekr Moon and Other Novellas is an engaging collection of science fiction stories that showcase author Windsor Harries ability to captivate the reader in futuristic adventures. Harries' stories take a seemingly ordinary person during the course of their ordinary routine and impose a monumental challenge, whether it be a new introduction to an alien species, or a seismic shifting of the earth.Harries' work demonstrates strong writing skills and dialogue, with some of his stories crafted remarkably well. The story about the shifting tectonic plates, told from the viewpoint of people on different continents and among different cultures could be fleshed out and turned into a novel in its own right, it was particularly strong. The first story in the collection is perhaps his weakest, the character's motivations were not clear, and did make sense. Future versions of this collection would do well to consider significantly revising and/or leaving out the first story, however the ones that followed were well crafted and strong. I look forward to reading more from this author.

A Very Grounded Look at Fantastic Situations By Meanwhile, Melinda Windsor Harries has written a smart, yet diverse collection of novellas that celebrate the strength of the human spirit under mind boggling conditions.Including five science fiction, fantasy and apocalyptic novellas that include:CHOSEN: a space ship hovers over town after town, country after country, until finally it stops and a shuttle lands. First contact?RUMBLE: a huge subsonic rumble starts up inside the Earth. What does it mean? The answer will surprise you.VOLTAGE: in a world where the population is in a stupor, voltage is a brain jolt for hyper-awareness. Drug or opportunity?PRIME: a peaceful civilization oppressed by giantic warrior bug aliens has waited around for eons for their genetic path to freedom to mature. And now he's alive...MOON: Thirty years ago, he was the first man to walk on the moon. Now, they want him to go back because of pictures of Moon Buildings? This was my favorite story. There really is a single character in this story, with three supporting players, but 95% of the story is the astronaut, and Harries nails it.All the novellas suck you right in. Harries ideas are fascinating, his characters entirely human. I couldn't stop reading. Unlike a lot of stories today, there aren't huge twists at the end - Harries, it seems, is grounded in reality while writing about the fantastic. The endings are poignant, gut twisting, conflicted and never easy, but they also contain hope, resolution, new beginnings and joy. Mixed blessings abound in these endings. This is a great collection.Highly Recommended for the discretionary reader!

In Moon and other novellas we are given five great science fiction tales by Windsor Harries that let us explore the world through a very interesting imagination. Needing a break from my general love of horror I wasn't about to pass on some science fiction that looked to be fun. Each of these novellas are a quick read and almost feel like they border on short story length but that is only because the quality of each story will have you flying through them. While Moon is a stand out story that shows us a world changed from our own it was actually the first contact story Chosen that truly stood out as a must read. It was almost disappointing that it was first as it made the other novellas (which were all good reads in their own right) almost feel as if they didn't live up to the quality of the first tale. Still, Prime and Rumble were both great reads with Voltage probably being the weakest of the five stories.A great read for science fiction fans who love their stories told in shorter formats. There were some big ideas here and while most of it has been covered before it was a refreshing writing style that kept these ideas all a fun read.

Marshall's Marauders, by Allan Lobeck

Review Keith Draws, Artist I have read many books but this one, a fast moving, exciting, page turner that I just couldn't put down. The narrative was not only engaging, but it touched me deeply on every level, because I heard ring of truth in the words. It turned out that the Author had actually drawn from his own experiences in Vietnam which allowed him to create a solid reality and strength to the main character and the extraordinary challenges he must overcome.Tristine Brookins, Avid Reader This story was one that kept me captivated from start to finish, and I don't normally read these types of books.  The plot kept you wondering what was going to happen next, while keeping you enthralled by the action.  This is one of the few books that I would recommend to friends and family because it was simply that good. A great story!   This is the story of a young man who chose to accept his responsibility as an American and go to Vietnam.  It's an action packed book, which highlights the dangers that many of our young men face when asked to serve their country in other people's wars.  Regardless of whether it's your war or someone else war, when you're in the middle of the fire fight there is no difference.  Surviving is all that matters.  Mr. Lobeck has a story worth telling, and does an excellent job of it.

From the Author This book is dedicated to all of the soldiers in my infantry platoon that protected me while I lead them in combat during the Vietnam War.  Secondly it is dedicated to the VA doctors that heard my story in counseling and my family that suggested that I document my Vietnam War experiences to help me let go of the pain I continue to suffer. And finally it is dedicated to the two women in my life, my Mother Irene Lobeck and my wife, Danuta Lobeck.

About the Author Allan A. Lobeck spent 12 months in Vietnam as an infantry officer and saw 180 days of combat in his one year tour.  Allan participated in nine different major campaigns including the first night attack against the enemy and won Medals for Valor.

Mr. Lobeck did a great job keeping the story flowing, fast paced, and so exciting that I could not put the book down. I actually sat and read this book in one sitting, that is how captivating this story is. This is a heroic story about a young man full of American Patriotism who decides to join the military services and serve his country in Vietnam. The story follows the main character and his disrupted way of life, full of anxiety, and confusion as he enters battle for the first time in his life in Vietnam. This young man from America is now facing the atrocities of war face to face and he is learning how to survive. Lobeck did such a wonderful job describing the main character that I felt as though I actually knew him personally. The story stays true as he explained the challenges each soldier faces during a time of war in a vividly intense and realistic manner. I was extremely captivated and drawn into Marshall's Marauders as I read his account of serving his country in Vietnam in first person as if I was reading directly from his personal journal or as if he had written me personal letters of his day to day encounters. A fascinating and heroic must read!

By lynne First person accounts of war are generally pretty graphic and vivid but what Allan Lobeck also manages in Marshall’s Marauders is to show a lot of emotion and a lot of heart. The action is great and so detailed that you find yourself right there in the scene which makes for a very encompassing reading experience. There isn’t a lot of unnecessary glorification and the author let’s the events speak for themselves and the reader to make up their own mind about the events. A must read for any fan of military fiction, but also for those who don’t normally go for this type of book too, as I think it has a lot to offer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved it By Mia W. Finding a warzone based thriller that doesn’t glorify the destruction or rest it’s laurels on easy-to-get sympathies is not an easy task. However Allan Lobeck’s Marshall’s Marauders is one of those rare finds that is written with the required knowledge and skill able to pull it off and leave you with the feeling you’ve just read an amazing book. The author’s own experience in the Vietnam war obviously play a vital part in the crafting of the book and I feel he has done an incredible job in bringing the intricacies and horrors of the war home to those of us lucky enough not to have been involved.

The moment Chloe Girard walked into my life, she exposed secrets and emotions I always thought were best kept buried. She wants to move on, to ignore the past. But I can't do that. Not when she still suffers, and not when the man who hurt her remains unscathed. So when I discover the perfect opportunity to make him pay for what he did to Chloe, I can't walk away, no matter the consequences. But there's a fine line between justice and obsession. As I turn up old crimes and new lies, I know that I'm playing with fire-and risking the very foundations of our relationship. My love for Chloe is absolute. I just hope it's enough to save us both.Contains mature themes.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Sometimes evil wins... By Rosa Sharon There's just something special about Tracy Wolff's style of writing that I connect with. Her flow is so smooth and very descriptive. I don't mean visual description, I mean thoughts and emotions. She puts us inside the minds and the hearts of the characters and makes us feel what they are experiencing. So of course EXPOSED put me through a tsunami that went from sexy, to sweet, to funny, to sad, to furious, to fear, to surprise, to anxiety. The suspense is really cranked up in this story. There are so many layers and details and I found myself pulling out my Criminal Minds profiling skills as I predicted the outcome. I knew the turmoil that Ethan was suffering due to his guilt regarding the tragic event that turned Chloe into the broken version of herself that he fell in love with. Of course he wasn't knowingly involved. He was lied to by those he trusted, believing that he was helping. Now that secrets are being uncovered and transgressions are piling up, he just can't let it go. He feels compelled to take action, in spite of Chloe's insistence that he leave it alone. Can he find a way to accomplish his 'plan' without losing the love of his life in the process? Can he let it go if she makes him choose? Did you know that his buddy, sexy Sebastian was gonna be in this book How cool is that? And have you experienced, "The universe according to Tori?" I love Chloe's best friend, Tori. She is also broken, hiding her painful past and drinking away her sorrows. I'm very anxious for the author to let me inside her head. In the meantime I'm enjoying the hell out of her sassy mouth as she doesn't even bother to hide her crush on "Ethan f*@king Frost". She tells Chloe that every other woman feels the same way and that "you'd better get used to wading through the drool." She's gonna get her own book, right? Please?

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Review: Ethan Frost #3: Exposed By Lisa Hines Exposed by Tracy Wolff is the third novel in her Ethan Frost series. This is a wonderful, steamy romance told this time from both Chloe AND Ethan's POV's. As much as I loved the first two books in this series (Ruined and Addicted) the added peek inside Ethan's head was an awesome addition to this book.We pick up right where book 2, Addicted, left off before the epilogue and we tie in to the spin-off series, Play Me 1-5, which focuses on Ethans best friend Sebastian and his love interest Aria.Prepare yourself for some major tension and plot twists. This book gets down to the nitty gritty and deals with Ethan's miserable excuse for a brother Brandon and how Ethan takes him down for the damage he caused in his past. It also showcases a bit more back and forth with Chloe's issues and how she has a tendency to run from Ethan, which is infuriating, but there it is. We also get to see how strong she can be for Ethan when she sticks to it so she redeems herself from me wanting to b*tch-slap her a few times.Tracy Wolff is definitely on my list of favorite authors and she should be on yours too.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Tracy Wolff is an exceptionally gifted writer and I began reading her novels when the first Ethan Frost novel came out in Januar By Samantha Pereira She fleshes out her characters so well and the plot is always well constructed. I am a bit biased on loving this novel since I have loved Ethan Frost since the beginning. It feels so good to see Ethan Frost back in action. I've been waiting for this book for what feels like years! Can I just say that Ethan and Chloe are dynamite together? This book takes you on a wild ride with twists and turns you never see coming. The passion, the love, the torment, all of it rolls together to become the third Ethan Frost novel.Epic page turner is what I dub Exposed. Home run, slam dunk, goal, touch down! First off, they get MARRIED! YES! Ethan and Chloe Frost, quite a nice ring to it in my opinion. If you've read Play Me Wild you'll remember Sebastian. We get quite a bit of Sebastian in this novel and I was so happy. I adore Sebastian. Granted, he doesn't top Ethan Frost, but he's pretty awesome.I am anxiously awaiting the next novel, Flawed.

By Kindle Customer Although Maisey and Dominic grew up best friends, then fell in love in high school and planned to marry and live happily ever after life threw them a curve. Maisey's father dominates her life and her future with Dominic. They were from two different worlds and her leaving tore him apart. Would he ever forgive her? Would he ever see his dream of being in a real band come to fruition? It is through dark days and being broken that we see our need for God. It is so neat to see how the lives of the other band members have grown in this story and how they help Dominic grow to be the man he was meant to be.

Rose Parker never put much thought into the word "necessary". Food, water and oxygen are "necessary". Divorcing her ex-husband was sad, but "necessary". Leaving a great life behind in Atlanta to move back in with her mother wasn't exactly ideal, but it was "necessary". And working at a job that barely pays a single bill is "necessary" because her boss happens to be better than ice cream on a summer’s day. That is how Rose would define "necessary"…at least until she met Nix Taylor. Before Rose realizes what’s happening, Nix becomes more "necessary" than the beating heart in her chest. But when the strength of their love is tested, they quickly find that "necessary" or not, the past can still define your future if you let it. Or maybe this time, Rose and Nix have finally found a love worth fighting for. Note: The Fangirl Series is a stand-alone series. You do not have to read "You Never Know" prior to reading the other books in the series, but there is character crossover. This story contains some adult language and adult situations. I just finished the story of Nix and Rose and I'm in love with Nix. There is something about Nix story that draws you right into what he is going through. Very real and personal. How Rose is there for Nix, when Nix doesn't realize he needs Rose is theme of what I got out of reading this couple's story. There are a few moments where you will get teared up reading it but it is so good. If you want a fun summer read this is a must along with the rest of the Fangirl Series.

Clarissa Dickens faces a fate worse than death if she does not find a way of escape. In the clutches of a ruthless employer who threatens to force her into a life of sin and degradation, she decides to flee West as a Mail Order Bride. But Clarissa's trek to Grant, Nevada not only carries her to an unknown future, it also brings her face-to-face with the deep wounds of her past. Abandoned orphan siblings, a soul destorying 'sanctuary' of sin, a mysterious mining secret and cold blooded murder, paint a dark backdrop for the light of love, faith and forgiveness to shine their healing light, in this story of redemption and romance. "Any book in the Beauty For Ashes collection will both break your heart and melt your heart. Every story follows the tragic pathway traversed by desperate brides, until finally they find true love and healing. Orphan’s Redeemer is no exception. Clarissa Dickens’ dire circumstance leaves little room for hope, but the light of love breaks through the darkness in the person of Maurice Leeks, a clerk for a mining company in Grant, Nevada. The amazing thing about Clarissa’s tale however, is that her journey there, although hounded by setback, brings not only hope for her future, but healing for her past. I promise that there will be moments as you read that will make you gasp, others that will have you putting on the gloves to fight for justice for our heroine, and of course generous helpings of good old fashioned clean romance.” Terri Grace, Author The Beauty For Ashes Inspirational Romance Collection are stirring stories of despairing Mail Order Brides pulled from the ashes by loving Western husbands. Interview With The Author What kind of stories do you enjoy writing? My favorites are Clean Romance short stories, especially Mail Order Bride. I love writing historical Western romance novellas and short stories. I also write a cozy mystery or two. They are such fun! Your books often contain an element of faith as well as clean romance and love. Is that important to you as a writer? Yes, my faith is important to me, and as an author clean Christian western romance is my heart passion. I love being able to tell a story, be it an American mail order brides series, a Mail Order bride and babies tale, or a historical western romance novella, and at the same time bring a positive message of hope, faith and love to uplift readers. Are all of your stories Clean reads? Yes, every story I write is clean and wholesome, and I find that language and sex free Mail Order Bride books are just as good as those that include such things. I don't think that offensive elements are necessary to tell a great story, and I always ensure that I write great Christian Western romance free of anything that might compromise my readers in any way. The main thing for me is always the story, and the characters. A great plot is what makes a story worth reading. Where do your brides and their stories come from? Mail Order Brides of the west, east or sometimes even foreign brides jump into my imagination every day, each telling their own special story! I have mail order brides of Texas, New York, even Liverpool, England. So many places, so many tales to tell. I get an idea for a book or a series and when I begin to write the stories often take on a life all of their own. Just like my readers, I am often on the edge of my seat eagerly waiting to find out what will happen next! I even have a few Mail Order Husbands cooking. :) What would you like to say to your readers? Just two short words. Thank you! I think many authors take their readers for granted, but without you there would be no stories. A story only really comes alive in the hand of a reader. My readers are the reason I write, the reason I can tell my tales. Without them, well, there would be no story to tell. Every email I receive, every review that is left - each one of them means so me

YOUR HEART YEARNS FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM By Redrabbitt This is an extremely emotional story to read, full of heartache and pain, misfortune, bitterness, good versus evil, and an example of people and how they can turn on someone while calling themselves Christians. I felt actual pain reading this story with everything that Clarissa endures. She does keep secrets, but with what all she has endured, it is understandable. Her faith in God is what surrounds her during these trying times. The plot kept me emotionally captivated with a dialog that at times were full of joy and others painful. "No, life is not fair, but you can choose to let go and find peace. Forgiveness is a choice." There are so very valuable lessons in this story and in the end, we do get an HEA ending. Disclosure: I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.

Clarissa was dropped off at a orphanage by her mother and her new husband along with her little brother. Unfortunately her brother dies and she is taken to work for the "Madam" at a Gentlemen's Club. Clarissa works as the laundress, cook, and maid to the fallen doves that work there. She finds out she is going to be "sold" to a man and have to start doing what the other girls do there at the "club" and decides she has to get out of there. She then finds an ad in the paper and submits a response to become a Mail Order Bride. Can being a Mail Order bride be better than a "fallen dove" at the "club"?! Can Clarissa find forgiveness in her heart for wrongs in her past that brought her to so many harsh places? A nice read. I was gifted this book in exchange for my honest review.

In the next to the last chapter I came across these words "Forgiveness is a choice.” ... "You don’t forgive for them, you forgive for yourself." It reminded me of a sermon from my minister sometime in 1991 - 1992, where he said very similar words which enabled me to forgive the wrongs I felt my ex-husband committed against me. This book has awakened my soul again from a great depression from January 2009 to the last couple of years of hiding in my bedroom. I am very grateful to Terri Grace for this story. I always enjoy her books.

It's 1912, and London is in turmoil....

The suffragette movement is reaching fever pitch, but for broke Fleet Street tomboy Frankie George, just getting by in the cutthroat world of newspapers is hard enough. Sent to interview trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, Frankie finds herself fascinated by the tightly laced acrobat and follows her across London to a Mayfair corset shop that hides more than one dark secret.

Then Ebony Diamond mysteriously disappears in the middle of a performance, and Frankie is drawn into a world of tricks, society columnists, corset fetishists, suffragettes, and circus freaks. How did Ebony vanish, who was she afraid of, and what goes on behind the doors of the mysterious Hourglass Factory?

From the newsrooms of Fleet Street to the drawing rooms of high society, the missing Ebony Diamond leads Frankie to the trail of a murderous villain with a plot more deadly than anyone could have imagined....

With a major film, Suffragette, starring Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Carey Mulligan, coming soon, suffragettes will be back in the limelight once again, nearly 100 years after they fought for votes for women.

A fantastic debut By Alba in Bookland Rating: 4,5The Hourglass Factory is a brilliant debut set in 1912, when the suffragette movement is determined to be heard in London and an entire branch of police has been set up to deal with it. Frankie, the main character, finds herself in the middle of all this when she is asked by her newspaper to interview trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, who happens to be a suffragette. Ebony has no time for interviews as she has some other urgent matters to attend, but Frankie who wants to prove she is as good as any other male journalist doesn't let her go so easily. But then, Ebony disappears and Frankie, looking for her, ends up in a crime scene. Something is going on and she is determined to unravel it.From that moment we follow Frankie's investigations and with the help of a snake dancer and some of her contacts, she soon discovers that Ebony's disappearance is surrounded by secrets and something big is about to happen. The plot is full of twists and subplots that keep you gripped to its pages wanting to know more.Plus the setting of this novel is fascinating. I don't know a lot about the suffragette movement but this story has certainly piqued my interest. I will, for sure, look for more information and stories about this. And Lucy's style is so descriptive and detailed, that you could actually picture yourself in the middle of the dark streets of London in 1912. You can tell that there's been a resourceful research behind this novel. I especially loved reading about the fashion of that period, how some girls chose to wear pants and were regarded as too manly or how wearing a hat with a taxidermied seagull glued to it was seen as elegant. And don't forget the corset, key to the story.Even if at the beginning I found the pace of the story a bit slow, with the great number of characters we are introduced, I soon started to enjoy it, a lot. I found it very interesting that some chapters were narrated from the police's point of view, who are also investigating the murders and Ebony's disappearance but seemed to be a bit too obsessed with the suffragette movement. All in all, a fantastic debut by Lucy Ribchester that kept me awake hours, wanting to know more. Lucy is definitely an author to watch in the future.

Review: 'The Hourglass Factory' by Lucy Ribchester By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" Set in London 1912, the story of 'The Hourglass Factory' revolves around tomboy Frankie George who is a reporter who wants to make a name for herself within the male-dominated world of newspapers. However, this is no easy feat as her boss only wants her to write articles for the Ladies section and nothing else. When Frankie gets the assignment to interview trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, she is immediately intrigued. However, when Ebony never shows up for their meeting, Frankie starts to wonder what could have happened and decides to investigate. This unexpectedly leads her to the scene of a murder, which is just the start of a whirlwind mystery including circus artists, suffragettes and the mysterious Hourglass factory...If this novel sets the bar for 2015 book releases, all I can say is we have got an incredible year ahead of us. What an amazing read! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book, from the author's detailed and alluring writing style to the gripping storyline and the wonderful collection of unique and captivating characters. I loved the main character, Frankie, and her drive to uncover the story of what is going on. All of the other characters such as trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, snake dancer Millie, the eccentric Twinkle and shifty Liam managed to add their own touch to the story, just like the chapters told from the point of view of one of the police officers.I also loved the setting of the novel. The suffragette movement is a really fascinating part of history and I loved discovering more about it while reading this novel. Lucy Ribchester managed to describe everything so detailed and vividly, making it really easy to picture it all and really get immersed in the story. I was constantly guessing what was going to happen and what Frankie would stumble upon next; I was quite disappointed when I reached the ending, but at the same time I couldn't wait to get there to finally figure it all out. 'The Hourglass Factory' is an incredibly fascinating and thoroughly entertaining book, set during a time of great change, and I'd like to applaud author Lucy Ribchester for writing such a convincing and intriguing debut novel that will undoubtedly receive many more raving reviews!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. To suffer for suffrage... By Raven The Hourglass Factory by Lucy RibchesterI would like to thank Maia Larson at Pegasus Books for my review copy of this exciting hardback! The year is 1912 and the Ladies Suffragette movement is making waves in London. Fight for the right not only to vote, but to be treated as more than “silly women who don’t know their place;” the women commit various protest crimes that land them in prison. When they go on hunger strikes, they are held down and fed by force.Francesca George, “Frankie,” is a girl reporter for The London Evening Gazette. She prefers trouser suits to skirts or dresses, and shockingly engages in both drinking and smoking cigarettes. Her sympathy is with the suffragettes, but she isn’t an active member. Her latest assignment is to do a picture piece on Miss Ebony Diamond, a trapeze artist and suffragette. She longs for better assignments, and indeed often has better sources, yet her editor Stark gives the stories that should be hers to a man, Teddy Hawkins. He loves to rub this in Frankie’s face.During the course of the book, Ebony is apparently murdered. As it turns out she wasn’t, but someone wearing clothes much like hers was, an Annie Evans. Then Ebony’s friend Oliver Smith, who makes corsets at his shop in Bond Street, is also murdered. By now the official police are investigating the murders, a certain Inspector Fredrick Primrose in charge. The protesting ladies are split into two groups: the suffragettes and the suffragists. The latter group appears to be willing only to do protests that involve no violence. But Mrs. Pankhurst’s group, the suffragettes, is often in prison, facing hard labor, violence from the matrons, and force-feeding.The book is a glimpse into the history of the Suffragette Movement. Many of the events are as written, others based on true events. There is a building of suspense that grows with each line on each page. Some people may not be what they seem to be. As Frankie investigates, she makes new friends that are in the entertainment business just like Ebony Diamond. This is to be expected, but are they really whom they seem to be?The factions making up the Suffragette Movement are faced with more and more serious jail time. The violence begins to escalate out of control. Bombs are being made secretly in the corset shop. But could the suffragettes be being lead like sheep to the slaughter? Primrose finds himself in more danger every day. When the book reaches its startling reveal, the reader will be waiting with bated breath! The book is historical, mysterious, whodunit, and more; but one thing it is never is boring!I give Miss Lucy Ribchester five stars for a work well done!Quoth the Raven…

Ellen Margaret Brunelle thought jokes should be banned - jokes about paedophiles that is.She often thought how terrible it must be to be a kid who was being abused and to hear the whole world laughing at them. It was worse than the very worst virus - child abuse - and the damage spread just as quickly.

Teenage Ellen knew that Myra Hindley had been treated worse than an animal when she was a child. And although she knew that there was no excuse whatsoever for that woman's vile behaviour, she also knew how Myra's childhood and how she eventually turned out as an adult proved just how easily a young mind could be savaged.

She was very much aware of all the websites that existed - websites that were blatantly encouraging lewd and depraved behaviour. Not only were innocent children being abused, but babies were actually being sexualised from birth.

It was horrendous. It was all so terribly and despicably wrong in Ellen's eyes - and not enough was being done to stop it.

But it seemed like people didn't want to know, or want to read, or want to hear about it - sometimes even when it was happening under their own roofs - sometimes even to their own children.

There were those who didn't want to upset the apple cart by facing up to it, those who didn't want their apparently perfect lives ruined by divulging such atrocities going on under their own roofs.

In Miss Brunelle's eyes those types were almost as bad as the abuser - those who covered up, those who refused to listen, those who refused to believe, and those who let it continue...

But then there was the other end of the scale - the liars who blatantly lie and make it all up.

That well known adage often rang true... "Ain't no fury like a woman scorned."

And those who lie and bring a good man down are as bad as any abuser - just like she herself had done?

Perhaps.

PDF Ebook The Telescope (Classic Reprint), by Louis Bell

Excerpt from The TelescopeThis book is written for the many observers, who use telescopes for study or pleasure and desire more information about their construction and properties. Not being a handbook in two or more thick quartos, it attempts neither exhaustive technicalities nor popular descriptions of great observatories and their work. It deals primarily with principles and their application to such instruments as are likely to come into the possession, or within reach, of students and others for whom the Heavens have a compelling call.Much has been written of telescopes, first and last, but it is for the most part scattered through papers in three or four languages, and quite inaccessible to the ordinary reader. For his benefit the references are, so far as is practicable, to English sources, and dimensions are given, regretfully, in English units. Certain branches of the subject are not here discussed for lack of space or because there is recent literature at hand to which reference can be made. Such topics are telescopes notable chiefly for their dimensions, and photographic apparatus on which special treatises are available.Celestial photography is a branch of astronomy which stands on its own feet, and although many telescopes are successfully used for photography through the help of color screens, the photographic telescope proper and its use belongs to a field somewhat apart, requiring a technique quite its own.It is many years, however, since any book has dealt with the telescope itself, apart from the often repeated accounts of the marvels it discloses. The present volume contains neither pictures of nebulae nor speculations as to the habitibility of the planets; it merely attempts to bring the facts regarding the astronomer's chief instrument of research somewhere within grasp and up to the present time.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An historically important book, but maybe not for you, and probably not in this edition By Ursiform Note: I actually posted this for the 2010 Nabu Press reprint, which is the link above following "This review is from:". Amazon has cross-posted the review to the Dover edition, which is the link in the text below. Same original book, different reprints by different publishers, and different ISBNs. Sorry for any confusion. This is a reprint of Louis Bell's classic 1922 treatise on the telescope. It is quite technical. While it does cover some of the history of the telescope, it is primarily about how telescopes and the instruments used with them are designed and built. Page 65, for example, is a table labeled "Characteristics of Optical Glasses". Randomly opening the book to page 175 we find the sentence: "It will be seen that the friction studs are carried by the fly balls themselves, somewhat as in Fraunhofers' construction a century since, and the regulation is very easily and quickly made by adjusting the height of the conical friction surfaces above the balls." If your eyes glaze over at that, this is not a book for you.Simply put, this is neither a popular history of the telescope nor an up-to-date book on designing and building telescopes. Nonetheless, it is an important historical work, and some people will want a copy in their library. (I, obviously, have a copy.) But before buying this edition you should know that there was a 1981 Dover reprint. Although no longer in print, used copies can be found at a reasonable price: The Telescope. The classic history of the telescope is King's book The History of the Telescope, also republished by Dover. While out of print as I write this, Dover is about to release a new printing. Current only through 1955, King provides a detailed and moderately technical history. For a recent, lighter, and easier to read history, I recommend Dunn's The Telescope: A Short History.

It is a constant distraction, which means that reading is slow. Attention to the type detracts from content, some lines completely unreadable (e.g. last line on page 106), and the figures are patchy. It's beyond me why the book was reproduced in an odd size, and even why it was reproduced at all. Amazon should not sell this item.

Best technical book on classic telescopes By RAB I'm delighted to have gotten a hardbound copy of what is perhaps the best English-language book on telescopes, their design and testing, and use, up to around 1910. Fairly technical, but worth the effort to read, and you'll learn things that remain important with today's instruments.

Awaiting a TV talk show appearance, John Townley is quaking with dread. He has published a best-selling memoir about the Iraq War, a page-turner climaxing in atrocity. In a green room beyond the soundstage, he braces himself to confront the charismatic soldier at the violent heart of it. But John has never actually seen the man before—nor served in Iraq, nor the military. Even so, and despite the deception, he knows his fabricated memoir contains stunning truths.

By turns comic, suspenseful, bitingly satirical, and emotionally potent, A Big Enough Lie pits personal mistruths against national ones of life-and-death consequence. Tracking a writer from the wilds of Florida to New York cubicles to Midwestern workshops to the mindscapes of Baghdad—and from love to heartbreak to solitary celebrity—Bennett’s novel probes our endlessly frustrated desire to grab hold of something (or somebody) true.

A Big Enough Lie: A Novel, by Eric Bennett

Review

"... as truthful a book about the Iraq calamity as there is to read. Lacerating and heart-breaking, it’s a tour de force romantic melodrama in the take-no-prisoners style of Pat Conroy’s The Lords of Discipline." —The Rumpus "A blunt, effective debut." —Kirkus Reviews "A strong read" —Publishers Weekly

"The fast moving, madcap plot hides deeper questions about art, verisimilitude, and our contemporary culture. A Big Enough Lie is an unflinching look at memoir and memory, and how we use our experiences, and those of others, to construct our identities." —New Pages“Gives its readers a toxic shot of American violence, materialism, hypocrisy, and every permutation of bigotry in the book. Then it asks whether its dose of poison might cure or induce the very illnesses it portrays. It’s corrosive and passionate, upsetting and confrontational. By never giving an inch, Eric Bennett’s novel compels us, at its best, to consider our own participation not only in the starkest formsof these tragedies but also in the sins of euphemism and right-minded thinking that abet and preserve them.” —Paul Harding, author of Enon “A Big Enough Lie will turn your understanding of truth, war, and storytelling inside out and upside down. Like the best stories within stories, it is a feat of paradox: it manages to create a vividly real world not in spite of its metanarrative, but because of it. This is an immensely clever, original, and absorbing book.” —Eleanor Henderson, author of Ten Thousand Saints “A blistering, brilliant novel, A Big Enough Lie plunges us deep into the heart of atottering empire—which just happens to be our own. Eric Bennett is a ferocious talent: there isn’t a line in this book that doesn’t seethe with intelligent life.” —Robert Cohen, author of Amateur Barbarians

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An ambitious book By J. Woodward This book unapologetically swings for the fences, much the way The Corrections by J. Franzen does. It’s the story of a young writer faking a war memoir, but the book goes well beyond a fictionalization of a James Frey type disgraced writer into something far weirder and more profound. The plot is engaging, equal parts sly comedy and finely drawn drama. It’s the different narrative structures, however, that make this book shine. Who is writing what starts as a pleasant game that escalates in significance and meaning. Eventually, we understand characters are writing about themselves and each other, and it is rewarding to make those connections. The different structures also force the reader to wonder whether it is possible that a lie can be more illuminating, more valuable than the truth.“A Lie Big Enough” is an ambitious book, but one that invites the reader to be equally ambitious. I loved it.

A Book That Keeps Its Promise By Anne M Mulderry The opening pages dared the feminist in me to keep going, yet I was drawn into a story by a sense the writer would deliver what every serious reader of fiction hopes for: deeper understanding of the human condition and self.Palimpsests of plots and characters in layers of shared and stolen identities, that ultimately and powerfully expose us to the the truths of the fictions being told. This isn't a comforting book; the reader suffers wrenching examinations of morally reprehensible behaviors and actions, but not without the promise of hard-won isight being kept.I read it on Kindle and now have ordered the paperback. I want to hold this book in my hands in my second reading.

By Dsojohn Though not my usual read, I saw the glowing review in Entertainment Weekly and decided to give this a shot. Powerful statement on society with characters that stay with you. It was clever, sharp, funny, and completely absorbing. I couldn't put it down!
