NATIONALLY BEST-SELLING AUTHOR. A world where Custer survives Little Bighorn and becomes president goes seriously awry.Following his unlikely but decisive (and immensely popular) 1876 victory over Sitting Bull and the Sioux at the Little Big Horn, George Armstrong Custer is propelled into the White House in 1880.Two years later, he finds himself bored and seeks new worlds to conquer. He and his wife Libbie fixate on Spain’s decaying empire as his source for immortality. What President Custer doesn’t quite comprehend is that the U.S. military isn’t up to such a venture. When a group of Americans on a ship headed for Cuba is massacred, war becomes inevitable—and unless calmer, patriotic citizens and soldiers can find a way to avoid debacle, this war may be America's last stand!

Compared to his best efforts, (1861 for instance) this moves along at a snails pace, an unhealthy snail at that, with that "suspension of disbelief" that alternate history books really demand. Custer is lucky enough to survive the Little Bighorn, through no efforts of his own, becomes famous and wins the presidency..... equally unlikely. Then as president he makes decisions that even a drunken ward heeler would avoid and becomes, well, a man in chains.I like Conroy, a lot, but sometimes he hits the nail rather off the head, and this is perhaps his poorest blow of the hammer.

Hollowell The premise that if Custer lived he would have become president is interesting. The characterization of the historical characters seems to be reasonable based on the actual men and women assuming they had been placed in the situations described in this alternative history. Otherwise the book is essentially a projection of what might have happened if the Spanish-American war had started 10 years early. Where the author really excels is in his fictional characters, He creates well developed people to develop the situations and story in the alternative time-line.

In cement his place in history, Custer and his scheming wife conspired to start a war with Spain over Cuba. Unfortunately, that last time the army had been updated was at the end of the Civil War. And, the Navy,,, what navy??? Great read as always from Mr. Conroy and I look forward to his next one. One of the things about his books I really like is that they END. None of this zillion more books to continue the story. Keep 'em coming, Mr. Conroy. Love your work.
