Once upon a time, Andrea Morgan was a normal, everyday girl… Let’s start again. Once upon a time, Andrea Morgan was a fairly normal girl with quite remarkable reflexes, who could teleport from shadow to shadow. Then her brother was killed and she became Twilight, the stealthy, black-clad nemesis of organised crime in New Millennium City. Then she met Cygnus, almost her exact opposite, but they worked well together: Cygnus in the light and Twilight in the darkness. But there is something in the darkness which is stalking Andrea Morgan. It has been there, in the shadows, since mankind sat around the fires on the plains of Africa and wondered what was out there beyond the firelight. It wants Andrea dead, but sometimes when you die that’s just the start of your problems… Let’s start again. Maybe there was never a time when Andrea Morgan was a normal girl…

We asked for it, Teasdale delivered By Librovore This is the second book in the Ultrahumans series, which is about an alternate reality where people develop super-human powers. While the first book was in essence an origin story for Cygnus, "Shadows" follows her partner, Twilight, to a greater degree, with Cygnus' story continuing to develop, but more in the background. The sex scenes are with Twilight rather than Cygnus, which highlights the point. This book can be read standalone, but references may not make much sense without that context. The central villain in this story (there are a number) was one of the highlights. Teasdale does a great job of contrasting the characteristics of different villains (powerful but dumb, crazy, extremely intelligent, etc.), which is what we would expect in real life. A very nice touch was having villains manipulating other villains--not something you find in most novels, where one bad guy takes the stage and all others conveniently go on vacation. As someone who is critical of poor proofing/editing in general, I was very pleased with how good this aspect of the book was. I've always liked Teasdale's writing style, and it's properly on display here: interesting scene transitions, foreshadowing (no pun intended), overlapping events, and hints of personality traits that are tantalizing as possibilities in future stories. There's no cliff-hanger ending, but a discovery sets up (I presume) the next novel very nicely.

This is mostly Twilight's book with the story line revolving around her and the growth of her powers. Introduces a female serial killer and a secret society of shadow. The sex is significantly dialed back. Reduced to talk and mostly planning. Overall fast paced and strong plot. Nice cliff hanger at end.

He really pulled back from the sex even though the main character here is always described as almost a walking excuse for men to fantasize. This really helped the story as Niall actually appears to worry about plot much more than normal. The plot picks up about where Ugly (book 1) left off and does a decent job expanding on the characters and their relationships. There are a few too many shortcuts taken in the overall development of supporting characters, but otherwise this is a solid tale. I'd say it falls behind the better superhero series, but its a step up from others. Solid.
