I can feel the breeze and the tempo of the day. I can taste the rice cakes and hear the conversation of the afternoon merienda. I can imagine the dreams of a young girl who is surrounded by family and friends who know more about her than she does about herself. And around them are the spirits to contend with, who sometimes get involved in mortals' affairs. There is a window of time for this girl to venture off of this small island of limited possibilities into a bigger world to gain an education or perhaps to travel. To do this she will have to break tradition and when she returns it will never be the same. These stories swept me away to another time and place so authentically and lyrically. It seems as though we are eavesdropping into conversations. Ida Wolff is masterful at creating a complete world in each short story in which we are introduced to characters about whom we care deeply. The title is ironic to me since all these stories feel dreamlike.

By Judy Swann One morning last week I sat down with Ida Wolff's delightful collection The Woman Who Forgot How To Fall Asleep. Although I love my job and am always eager to get to my office, when the time came to head out the door I suffered a sharp twinge of conscience -- could I not just stay home and keep reading? Of course not, I said, and comforted myself with the fact that one of the "nanays" in Wolff's stories would surely have supported me in my good decision to go on to work and finish reading later. Wolff's main characters -- most of them young Filipinas -- and their extended families are so wonderfully and compellingly described that I read more slowly as I approached the end, so as to prolong the book. There's a little of the feel of Clarissa Pinkola Estes's Women Who Run With the Wolves in these stories; except that Wolff is not only showing us how to reclaim a disavowed wildness, she is showing us what it is to be a woman coming of age in post World War II Philippines, complete with all the dilemmas posed by the clash of tradition and modernity, membership in a clan, and the cries of the heart. Plus there are ghosts! Plus there is great dialog! If you're looking to give someone a good read, this book is a great choice.

Memories of home life, both in a national sense as well as community and personal corners are exposed in Ida Wolff’s domestica. Into her potpourri she swirls you in the shawl of Lola’s panuelo, engulfs you with the invisible emanations of the spirit world and stirs the curiosity that makes young love believe in the impossible. She hasn’t forgotten the secrets, the rites, and the passages that allows for deaths, births and flowerings to all join in the celebration of daily lives.Ida has masterfully introduced her children to their heritage through story telling and shared handmade reflections in a personal and inclusive way so that they may know the stuff they are made from and with tenderness lets them know how well she knows her own. When the stories have been relived, she steps from behind the veil of memory into the present. And with wit and charm looks at her living image with grace of age. What a “living will” to give to her children.
