Genestorm: City in the Sky The apocalypse has come and gone. The aftermath is a whole new world. The world of the hybrids. --- “Spark Town” is home to a community of colourful, hybridised citizens who thrive in the strange new world. But suddenly, a long lost menace from the past arises; swarms of nightmarish carnivorous creatures attack Spark Town, threatening to utterly extinguish every living thing in their path. “Snapper” – shark mutant, prospector and latter-day hussar – leads a team of fellow explorers as they seek out the origins of the terrifying new invasions. The weapons needed for their town’s survival may still exist somewhere in long lost, ancient cities. But the cities are hidden behind barriers of lethal radiation. The next invasion is coming – and time is running out. _ Sabres, sharks and six-guns! A cracking, page-turner of a novel! Wild hussar charges, savage mutants, majestic vistas and colourful characters. “They don’t write them like this anymore!” Look for the GeneStorm RPG by Kitsune Press

But this time there's a better feel of how much trouble the town is in By Zarpaulus My first impression of GeneStorm was that Paul Kidd had recycled his Gamma World novel "Red Sails in the Fallout". You've got the scavenger, the mad scientist, the plant, and the racist human, though admittedly the fifth adventurer is rather different, a cowardly womanizing wannabe aristocrat rather than an empathic swarm of earwigs. And the general plot has its similarities as well, our heroes' village is threatened so they set out to explore the ruins of pre-apocalyptic civilization. But this time there's a better feel of how much trouble the town is in, albeit more a result of the nature of the threat rather than the narrative. But most importantly, the characters really have some depth. It may be an RPG novelization, but Snapper's not simply some wandering loner who comes into town to sell her loot, she has friends, a family, a bedroom filled with Napoleonic cavalry paraphenalia. They're characters, not just character sheets.Overall, while it's not going to pose an intellectual challenge it is entertaining and guides the reader through the world of GeneStorm quite aptly. I plan to read it again soon.

She's a part-shark lady infatuated with pre-collapse cavalry and who rides around Australia on a giant cockatoo? Sure; why not? It's pretty straightforward, but I enjoyed it. The science behind exactly which supplies a post-collapse settlement makes to begin rebuilding civilization is interesting, and better thought out than the "Fallout" games. There's some humor (the bit with the fruit and the massage was memorable) and the fun spectacle of exploring dangerous ruins that have interesting stuff to see.My quibbles: (1) It could use another round of proof-reading. (2) The passive voice is overused. (3) Prologues tend to detract from the story and provide no necessary info, and this one is no exception. Snapper is more fun to read about than nameless soldiers who'll be dead any moment. (4) I had trouble accepting the plausibility of one of the battle scenes, because I kept thinking, "there's no way there could be that many enemies of this type living in an irradiated desert, and somehow cooperating this well". Turns out there's a respectable explanation, but I was hoping Kitt would say during (not just after) the battle, "This horde is ecologically implausible!" (5) How did the Brotherhood get treated the way they were at the end? Seemed like some potentially lethal tension got resolved offstage without a mention. And finally (6) Why is this $8 for an e-book?Again though, I had fun with it, and that's what matters.

Don't expect any deep discoveries here or sudden enlightenment, it isn't that sort of story. What it is, is a fun read, and that is all it has to be, really.
