Excerpt from The Bird Study BookThis book has been written for the consideration of thai everincreasing class of Americans who are interesied in acquiring a greater familiarity with the habits and activities of wild birds. There are many valuable publications treating more or less exhaustively of the classification of birds, as well as of form, colour, distribution, migration, songs, and foods. Here an at tempt is made to place before the reader a brief consideration of these and many similar topics, and suggest lines of action and thought that may perhaps stimulate a fuller study of the subject. Attention is also given to the relation of birds to mankind and the effect of ctvili Otion on the bird-Aife of the country. The book is not in tended so much for the advanced student in ornithology, as for the beginner.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At this moment I write this Amazon does not offer this book. The printed version of this book was first published in 1917 and contained pictures, the e-books however do not contain any of the illustrations. This book is about American birds, so if you're interest is in birds in other parts of the world than this book is not the right one for you. There are chapters on:-nesting (materials, locations, etc),-domestic life of the birds (care of the young, the faithful Canadian Geese, polygamy among birds),-migration of birds,-birds in winter,-the economic value of birds,-civilization's effect on the bird supply,-the traffic in feathers,-a chapter on bird protection laws,-bird reservations,-bird sanctuaries,-teaching bird study.A big part of this book consists of desciptions of bird behaviour witnessed by the author. There are some bits in this book that are not nice to read for sensitive people (for example the description of what happens when there is a shortage of food for the birds, or what the cat did to the nest of bluebell birds, and what the owner of the cat -the author of this book- subsequently did to the cat!).I do not recommend this book for tender hearted people, there are too many 'unhappy endings' in this book. For avid bird watchers this book might be interesting, even though bits of it are dated. This volume will also be appealing to persons who are interested in the history of bird-protection and bird-sancturaries in America.

The content lists them and links to the location but there is nothing but the captions. On the brighter side, the text in this book is pretty decent and good reading, although it is way out of date (early 20th century I believe), but many of the author's views on bird conservation, ecology, and such lik, is still valid and worth reading today. His style is enjoyable and thought provoking. Bottom line, for a free-be its worth downloading and reading.3 stars because pictures are lacking.

By Daisy S When I read this book, I found more solid information in it than I expected. Although it was published in 1917, I was still amazed that it has the info on different aspects of birds that I did not know such as Migration, Lighthouses causing deaths to birds (I had no idea of this), Birds in Winter, Birds of the Night and so much more.**For me, my favorite part of this book was about where Chickadees spend the night and I found this to be true as I have Chickadees that come into my backyard and I feed them song bird seed daily. Turns out that the Chickadees in my front yard creep into small holes to spend the night. I have seem them going into my large and thick bamboo area (where there are many small holes by the bamboo). It is so interesting to me that a book that was first published in 1917 is still so impressive today!*This book was written in a very original style, he writes while he is observing the birds, in fact I feel like I was in the woods next to the author! The author is THERE describing his actual experiences with the birds and even writes about the twigs, the nest and so much more.I give this a 4.5 stars because it has good information and it is a helpful addition to my current books on birds. I took off a little of the stars because it did not have any illustrations and was generous with the other stars because I learned new things that I did not know about birds especially one of my favorite birds, the Chickadee.
