The ad read: “Need Help? Bills due? Tired of ducking the Landlord? Come One...Come All to The Typing Room! We pay good, honest Money for your Story of Desperation and Despair.” And it led to a room with a coin-operated typewriter where you could pour out your troubles and expect something in return. Corrine had been there before. But when her husband went away she needed to go there again … didn’t she? “I call it ‘A Comedy of Alzheimer’s’’” says Monica De Vargas, “because the situations I create in the novel – some dramatic, some comical, many magical – were inspired by my mother’s own gift for story-telling, sense of humor and dignity as she progressed down this painful path.”

The Typing Room, by Monica De Vargas

About the Author Monica De Vargas, in her debut novel, The Typing Room, explores an entirely different approach to the world of Alzheimer's patients and the nearly 16-million family caregivers in the United States whose lives are profoundly affected by this disease. “I call it ‘A Comedy of Alzheimer’s’ in a completely respectful way, because the situations I create in the novel – some dramatic, some comical, many magical – were inspired by my mother's own gift for story-telling, sense of humor and dignity as she progressed down this painful path.” In this work of literary fiction, Monica writes from the point of view that asks the questions, “What if?” and “Why not?” spurred on by a dream she had six months after her mother's death from a nearly 12 year battle with the illness. “It unveiled itself daily, chapter by chapter, as if I were simply putting down on paper a story already written on my heart.” Monica has worked for some of the largest ad agencies in Los Angeles as a self-described “Office Mom.” After a thirty-year career, she and her husband relocated from Venice Beach to a farm in rural Oklahoma. They now live in Tulsa, with their three canine companions.

Durkee The Typing Room is a well written, sensitive, humorous, and hard to put down story told in an unusual way. It is about a woman with Alzheimer's called the Proprietress who experiences occasional and disconnected periods of memories/lucidity - kind of like an occasional picture frame in a movie, during which we learn about the characters in the book. I read it through and then perused it again because I found it unusually thought provoking and touches, in a soulful way, upon a dreaded illness. It's one story that I will remember.

A refreshing, imaginative and quirky "what if this were really possible" ride By Rahla Kahn Monica De Vargas is the best kind of wordsmith and storyteller - one whose very capable approach is filled with the surprises that only a well written page turner can offer. With a genuine ability to create a potent and descriptive narrative, De Vargas captures vividly in detailed, poetic, profound imagery a quirky and metaphysical ride. The difficult reality that an Alzheimer's diagnosis embodies is seen through her adept and masterful prose that only an authentically endured journey can capture with pen and ink.I love this book and with infinite ease recommend it to all who have, or will ever care deeply for a loved one, where uncertainty is a daily and nightly calling card.

I highly recommend this new author By My Secret Book Spot The Typing Room by Monica De Vargas5 out of 5 starsHaving been personally affected by Alzheimer's in my family, this story is really an interesting, hopeful, new interpretation of what living with the disease is all about. It's also the story of how people's lives weave and intertwine in ways we can't imagine. How one person's actions cause immeasurable consequences and benefits in the lives of people they don't even know.Well written and completely different than anything I've ever read.I highly recommend this new author.PippaMy Secret Book Spot
