It’s 2004, the year same-sex marriage becomes legal in Massachusetts, the year the Red Sox break the curse, and the year everything changes for Meg Myers. Meg is an animal control officer who doesn’t much like people and doesn’t believe wishes come true. She grew up in state care, bouncing between foster homes and her alcoholic mother. Left physically and emotionally scarred, she is guarded about her past and pessimistic about her future. So she focuses on her job and her dream of opening an animal shelter. Meg’s world is rocked by three women: Pam and her foster daughter, Violet; Gina, twin to Meg’s best friend Jeff; and Samantha, the vet who shares an uncomfortable past with Meg. Through her relationships with these women, Meg is forced to explore mother-daughter bonds, loss and grief, and what defines friendship and gender in her quest to find security and love for the first time in her life.

Review "[A]s I made my way through chapter after chapter I often found myself weeping not just from sheer emotion of it all, but also because of the supreme prowess displayed by the author in her writing overall. The way Burnes captures the struggle of an abused and neglected child in the midst of a child-protective system so tragically flawed is handled with painstaking care and respect, as is her repeated treatment of queer issues such as homosexuality, bisexuality, and gender identity." --Tabitha Beth, The Rainbow Hub

Wish I Had Known By Logan Field *SPOILER ALERT*I'll probably get called a TERF or transphobic, etc, but as a lesbian I hold to the "old fashion" meaning of the word...a woman romantically, emotionally and physically attracted to another woman. Of course in the age of Bruce Jenner, etc woman has now become any person who thinks they are one.The main character, Megan, a lesbian, who I really enjoyed learning about falls for a "butch" pre op MTT, named Gina. Imagine my surprise when our first detailed sex scene involves Megan giving Gina's penis a hand job in the ocean. The next minute they are slipping a condom on Gina's penis and our "lesbian" has heterosexual sex that triggers an episode of rape PTSD.Nowhere in the book's description does it mention transgender content. To each her own, but I don't want any penises in my lesbian stories. Evidently on Gina, a penis is just a built in dildo. I guess something all lesbians should aspire to.The book is well written and I'll finish it, but I would have appreciated a heads up on the subject matter because I would have passed.

I just finished the book and am trying not to cry, so I'm not going to be very articulate. This is a deeply moving story about a woman who has been through the worst life has to offer, has come out the other side mangled and broken, but finds friends and love. The story is a reminder that in spite of our pasts, we can make a future. If any of the books you've had me read deserve an award, this is the one."LOVED from start to finish. A lot of story packed into this one. Loved all the characters, especially Meg and watching her grow. I really liked her relationship with Gina. Found this to be well written for a debut novel. Looking forward to more from this author!!!!With gorgeous prose and relatable, realistic characters, Elaine Burns has woven an emotional, sexy tale that explores some very relevant social issues. The story grabbed me from the start and didn't let me go until I finished the last page.Oh my gosh this is a so good book! I like when a book can in a single opening take my all attention…and this was that kind of book. I have found the story interesting, heartwarming, engaging and fresh. I like to be surprised and, also if I was quite sure about the ending point of the romance right from the start (and I was right about it), I was surprised about Meg’s journey. An outstanding debut novel!

Now that I've got that out of the way, let me tell you what I really think. All the characters in this story have depth to them...you feel for them and you can't help but be drawn in by the story they each have to tell. I loved reading and learning about them all. You rooted for some and wanted to shake some of the others. I didn't want to stop reading this book....I felt I NEEDED to know what was going to happen. I can't even really tell you the story line of this book, but what I can say is that you should read it because it will stick with you for a long time. There is a message and when you come to the line that delivers it you will be amazed at the feelings it invokes.
