Guy was quick to leap up and on top of him, riding astride his adversary’s chest with two blades pressed to his neck. “Do you yield?” Guy roared into his face. “I yield… I yield…” The other was so fearful he almost wept, and to see this sent a thrill through Guy stronger than any other emotion. His heart beat fast. He rose panting, exhilarated and joyful: He had won! No-one was watching. Why would they? Across the vast competition space there were over two dozen blades mats. Almost all played host to a fighting duo. As always, his gaze was drawn to where the gym opened onto the vast panes and verticals of the Dome. The light was bright, yet dark geometric shadows fell across the space. Guy loved this gym. He felt he always fought better here, in the light and shadows of the Dome. In the light and the shadows of the Dome, so help me God. It was a prayer of the Dome Elite. One day I will say those words, thought Guy, and wear that uniform. Now that’s a real prayer. He sighed. Guy Erma Book II, Hunter, Is An Edge-of-the-Chair read By Marc Stern For Prince Teodor and Guy Erma, things keep getting curioser and curioser in “Guy Erma and the Son of Empire, Book II, Hunter.” In normal course of the Planet Freyne's events, Teodore should have succeeded to the throne when he was old enough and Guy should, by all rights, have had easy entry into the Dome Elite Junior Corps. The Dome Elite was the Planet Freyne's premier fighting force.However, in the regicidal politics of Freyne, nothing is as it seems or should be. Instead of ruling, the Freyne, Teo finds himself, now, kidnapped and being held by, it turns out, Chart Segat, mayor of the Dome, Freyne's most important feature. Further, it also turns out that Segat is working with Teo's great-uncle Frederon, emperor of the 13 planets. Each has something to gain from Teo's kidnapping. Segat hopes to retain his power as leader of the Dome; the emperor hopes to force Teo's mother and regent, Sayginn into an arranged marriage. Frederon wants an heir and is determined to have Sayginn produce not one, but four. The four would assure Frederon of a direct heir and cut Teo out of the succession.Into this carefully sculpted plot comes Karl Valvanchi, brother of the Zaracan ambassador to Freyne, Nikki. The Zaracans are interfering with Freyne's politics in a way that will advance their claims to Sas Darona where they have extensive mining operations. Karl meets and falls in love with Sayginn. He also begins the hunt for Sayginn's kidnapped son, Teo. Thus, Karl becomes the hunter.Neither Segat nor the emperor counted on Karl's involvement – and later marriage – with Sayginn. It changes things in many ways they cannot account for. Neither had they accounted for Guy's involvement. Guy, the current champion of all blades fighters, finds himself armored while fighting an unarmored Teo in a rather rigged blades contest. Instead of carrying the fight to its ordered conclusion – Teo's death – Guy falters and then helps Teo escape; to be rescued by Karl.If this seems a bit convoluted, it is. The funny thing is, though, that author Sally Ann Melia, who wrote the three-volume “Guy Erma” series for teens, never lets it become confusing. Her clear writing and excellent plotting skills and her ability to manage the many plots and subplots that she concocts on the way to Book III are first rate. With as many plots and subplots as she has written – Teo, the Dome, the Valvanchis, the emperor and more – “Guy Erma” could easily have become a confusing morass, but it is not. Each plotline works its way cleanly through the carefully written text. Though the plots intertwine, touch and then go off elsewhere only to intertwine again, they never become confusing as Melia is clearly the master of this work.Sally Ann Melia has set off to write an action-packed space yarn that is supposed to and does keep you at the edge of your chair. The characters are fully developed. Each one seems real and is someone with whom you can empathize. Altogether this is an excellent bit of writing that, while advertised as a youth book, should appeal to any reader, no matter how old or young.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. As the story progresses, the plot thickens. By Jane Premise - As I've said before, it was not the most unique plot but this one's pretty different. Plus as the story progresses the plot thickens and the story developed really well.Characters - The characters in this book have developed really well, too. The personalities of our main characters, Guy and Teodor did a one-eighty. None were the conceited Guy and whiny Teodor that I first complain about. In their place was a more mature character.We got to know more about Karl and Teodor's mother. Their relationship seems to be progressing as well. I'm not sure what to think of the other characters because of the conflicting descriptions and most of them were stagnant. It was, however, a crowded set of characters so I hope that in the third part, all characters would've develop then, either good or bad.Writing style/technique - Again, like the first part, this book was written in multiple first point of views. I like every book that gives me room to understand the story of all the characters.I like that this one was more action-packed. The first one gave a tease and now this book gave me what I'm hoping for, a good 'ole "action". Well, not really action "action" but action as in the characters finally did something not just all "political" talk.World building - This is done impeccably. The problem in the first book was I cannot imagine the world being describe. But in this book, as the storyline advances, I could picture the world vividly. I have now get the hang of the Dome.Plus, as I've said before, the illustrations really helped me in envisioning the Dome and the characters and some miscellaneous stuff.I like this book better than the first part. Because 1. as the story progresses, the plot thickens and 2. the characters developed really well.

In this book, the kidnapped prince tries to escape from his captors and his mother resorts to all possible measures to retrieve her son. His mother Regent Sayginn turns to Karl Valvanchi to help find his son. Thus, Karl Valanchi’s story is narrated in depth. The other highlight of this part of the story would be that of Guy Erma’s storyline – the story of the underdog who seems determined in getting into dome elite.This book is a bit racier when compared to the first book due to a lot of action sequences. The first book focused on the politics of the Empire, giving the readers an idea of the key characters and their impact on the story line. This book on the other hand, focusses more on the actual story progression. There is an elaborate chase and escape sequence revolving around prince Theodor. The first book was an absolute cliff hanger. This book on the other hand surpassed the first book when it came to climax. Sally left me high and dry, prompting me to pick up the next book without a delay. Some un-answered questions from the first book are given a much needed explanation but still, the story feels a bit incomplete. Hopefully the next and the final book will answer my questions and give me a sense of closure.The writing in this book is a bit more compelling when compared to the previous book. Some parts of the story, especially the part where Regent Sayginn choose to race herself instead of letting the trainer, were a thoroughly enjoyable read. The final chapter where Guy Erma and Prince Theodor enter is a combat takes the cake! This book also provides a diligent insight into the characters and their though process. Almost all the characters are given equal space and importance so much that the emphasis on the protagonist is reduced.PLOT : 8/10NARRATION: 8/10CHARACTERISATION: 8/10BOREDOM QUOTIENT: 3/10(Lower the better)OVERALL RATING: 8/10
