Nanites The Awakenings The legends of vampires are nothing new, but real world vamps? On April 10th, 2010, nearly 150,000 humans discover they have become something akin to those mystical monsters. Yes, the Sun is their bane, but they are also faster and stronger than any person could be. A few are even gifted with paranormal powers. April 2nd, 2010. Strange lights flash high in the sky; four days later a human infection by nanites of an unknown source is discovered by the CDC. Research shows an infection rate of 100%; everyone on the planet has tiny, minute machines running around in their bodies doing something but what is unknown. The nanites are found to have two variants; as they are the first nanites discovered they are labelled Series 1, Category A and Category B. The Category A's are universally spread but the Category B's are only in a very small percentage of the population. Three days after the CDC's discovery, the Secretary of Health and Human Services decides not to inform the President or the public that all are infected/invaded by micro-machine some of which are displaying high activity our top scientists don't understand. Two days later individuals infected with Category B Nanites around the world started spontaneously combusting when exposed to sunlight. Two hours before sunrise on the eastern seaboard, CDC confirmed only the Cat. B's were affected. The head of CDC immediately called the Secretary of Health and Human Services. She did nothing. Instead she demanded stateside confirmation before setting off a panic. She was to give the President a morning briefing, but that was at ten. Over five thousand people in the US burst into flame in the time that took. The hospitals might have known how to treat these people if a warning been sent out. A hundred died because they didn't know what to do. Cali Walker, Animal Care and Control Officer in Los Angeles County is caught up in by this affliction and accompanying hysteria. Like thousands of Americans and over a hundred thousand people worldwide, she struggles to both put her old life together and forge a new destiny for herself and these new people ~ the Awakened. Cali Walker is one such ‘gifted’ person ~ the newly Awakened as they are now known. How will she and thousands of other Americans deal with sudden twisting of their lives and the global reaction to this ‘Awakened Question’?

Glier Hidden gem in the self published e-press!Perhaps taking a cue from John Ringo's science-y take on a manufactured zombie apocalypse, Mr. Dosher has made science give us vampires. Much like Ringo, he gives us just enough science to appease our suspension of disbelief, then quickly shoves the science into the closet and focuses on people. Which is good! I liked these people. This is very much an "Awakening" novel -one week there were no vampires (that's not what they wind up choosing to call themselves), the next week there are. How would real people attempt to cope with the changes in their life? How would real governments attempt to respond? Aaaand, Go!What follows was a fun, fast-paced read. Dialog is spot on, pacing is solid, characters are very believable but most not yet very developed -the author spent much more time writing about action and the fallout from actions, rather than character development. As an awfully refreshing side effect, there is absolutely no whining, angst or navel-gazing from anyone involved in this book. Also very surprisingly for Another-Damn-Vampire-Novel, the romantic content is appropriate to the disruptive circumstances - in other words there *is* no romantic content, which occasionally causes the characters frustration. Finally, when I read it, the book seemed very short. I checked it out, and was stunned to discover that this novel clocks in somewhere around two hundred plus pages. This is not short fiction, it was just a fast read. And a bargain at this price.I already bought the next one and it's looking to be just as good. Pick it up, you'll be glad you did.

For "The Nanites - The Awakening" I could not put it down. From the very beginning to the heart-rendering conclusion, I literally forced myself to read it in one sitting.I have admired James M. Dosher's writings for years and I have to emphasis that with this novel he has achieved stellar level of writing creativity. His characters are believable individuals cast into a potential catastrophe of unbelievable scale. With this publication Dosher puts himself at the forefront of Disaster genre authors. While re-invigorating? Re-inventing the tired, cliche-ridden vampire fiction. As terrifyingly. believable possible current news headlines.
